Snoop Dogg Weighs In on This Whole Don Imus Situation

4/12/07, 2:44 pm EST

Snoop Dogg on the Imus CBS MSNBC radio station situationIn case you haven’t picked up a newspaper, read an elevator news ticker or watched TV in multiple days, know this: Radio DJ Don Imus made a scandalous comment on his morning show about the Rutgers women’s basketball team, in which he referred to the girls as “nappy-headed hos.” This has started a firestorm of national drama. And today, in a statement released to MTV News, Snoop Dogg made his position on this national scandal clear.

“Kick him off the air forever,” he said. Snoop went on to educate us all on the difference between Imus’ blatantly inexcusable racist comments and the vicious, arguably misogynist lyrics that permeate hip-hop. “It’s a completely different scenario,” said Snoop.

[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing sh–, that’s trying to get a n—a for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them mutha—-as say we in the same league as him.

Thoughts? Is there a difference between the self-expressive if offensive lyrics in rap music and Imus’ statements? And even if there is, does that make rap-delivered racism/sexism okay?

Update: CBS has fired Don Imus. The MSNBC simulcast of Imus’ morning show was already killed, and this next step was probably inevitable.

u know what i find funny about this…..imus said this and its the most awful thing he could have said but its ok for every stupid on-line fourm to write it out as long as the ” ” are in place!!! just an observation

Morgan | 4/12/2007, 2:51 pm EST

I ain’t no black man and I’m not tryin to be all hard and shit, but I gotta take Snoops side on this one. Shizzle! If Imus never makes it back on the radio, it’d be just fine. What a f’n dumbass

whites for equality! | 4/12/2007, 2:52 pm EST

If nappiheaded hos is a racist term, it implies that only can meaningfully refer to some race or another. On behalf of all whites, I must say that this is an outrage! When will blacks finally realize that we are all equal! Give us a chance, and we too can be nappiheaded hos. We will overcome! Fight the discrimination against our women! Fight back against the oppression to keep our women from being the best nappiheaded hos they can be!

Rappers can say ho all day because they in control of the their reffered women. And Don Imus is an apparition of a character and can’t celebrate the same ideas as hip-hop delivery men because he simply flows in conversation with no arranged thought or discourse.

Saxon | 4/12/2007, 3:16 pm EST

He has a point about the difference in targeting college students vs. targeting, I guess, “homegirls.”

On the other hand the actual language /slurs used by the rappers are far worse and they often tend to advocate violence as well.

Tough call.

It’s unfair that a white guy can’t say what a black guy says.

My answer is true!

Has anyone seen the Chapelle show? How come he gets away with making fun of whites, but that level of racism is accepted?

J | 4/12/2007, 3:18 pm EST

First off lets make this clear, Don Imus has never been, nor ever will be funny or insightful. What he said exposed him as an idiot and a bigot, and I in no way condone his words, but he should not be fired. We live in a country that extols its right to “freedom of speech,” yet every time some moron says something that infuriates and offends we are so quick to try and take this right away. We can not have it both ways. If we say we want free speech, then we must take the good with the bad. Rappers like Snoop Dogg, who use violent, misogynistic lyrics to make millions of dollars have the right to say what they want even if it offends other people. Why shouldn’t Imus?

These rappers are a joke!

the Phil | 4/12/2007, 3:23 pm EST

This so absurd and demonstrates the double standard and ignorance that exists in this country. From Snoop Dogg a person who has openly admitted to being a pimp in the past; you put these “hoes” on the street for your own monetary benefit! By glorifying these woman as hoes you do absolutely nothing to help, in my opinion you are far worse than Don Imus. This is in your soul? This is in your mind? How about have it in your soul and mind to try and educate young black men who use the words woman and “ho” interchangeably. Imus’ comment was said in jest, given it was a bad joke, there is not a human being alive who could say that there was hate in his delivery. Firing Imus will do nothing to prevent future problems. Imus’ joke was in horrible taste no doubt, but young kids are not goig to start disrespecting woman of color because of it, he does not have that kind of influence. You Snoop do have that sort of influence, you have the position to make a difference for better or worse. Education is the key to social change not firing a radio host. These comments show how ignorant and hypocritical the hip hop community is as a whole and I pray for they youth of America who have people like this to look to as idols and role models. That goes for both white and black kids because they are all listening, so what do you have to say?

Nikki | 4/12/2007, 3:34 pm EST

I agree that the things Don Imus said about the team were uncalled for. The girls did come along way and did not deserve to be called the names. However!!!!!! Enough is Enough.
I do not believe the sponsors should have stopped. I also do not think taht this man should have lost his job.

snoopz | 4/12/2007, 3:35 pm EST

Very articulate Snoop. Well thought out, and presented effectively.

Rangersin07 | 4/12/2007, 3:39 pm EST

By any means im not saying what imus said was right but hes a bad comic, always has been, but come on man, why is it that the wayan brothers can come on free tv back in 2000 i think and immitate the movie the sixth sense and say ” i see white people hiding under covers” and thats alright or steve harvey doing stand up and calling whites ” crackers ” but thats ok right, it was a bad joke and he should be suspended but this has gone too far, the guy said he was sorry and thats that. It just seems like when a white person says something, sharpton is ready to march and everything but whites dont do anything when blacks rip them all over and make fun of them. and IM NOT A RACIST AS I PROBABLY HAVE MORE BLACK FRIENDS THAN WHITE, BUT WHATS RIGHT IS RIGHT.. GROW UP ALREADY.

I thought Imus was an idiot and then I read Snoop Dogg’s comment. Two birds of a feather if you ask me.

Today's Black Woman | 4/12/2007, 3:45 pm EST

Snoop may perceive that there is a difference (as I believe most rappers do) but as a black woman who grew up poor, went to college undergraduate and graduate) and has worked for everything she has I make no differentiation when it comes to remarks made by brothas (so called brothas) or by Don Imus!

When Snoop and other rappers demean us in their songs they are doing to us exactly what had been done to us by others for centuries-degrading and belittling us for the sake of money and entertainment just like Imus!

Rap songs appeal to and are bought predominantly by white suburbanites and I can tell you that many white men and women DO NOT make the distinction between uneducated, poor black people (those from the hood) and smart ones who are their friends, neighbors and colleagues!

What they see is a black face in a song demeaning women, black women and it is hypocritical for us a people to accept behaviour from our own when we can’t accept it from others.

That’s why rappers should stop their disgusting comments and if they do not do as I have done stop listening to rap music, stop watching BET and refuse to accept disrespectful comments from anyone towards me as woman,as black woman or as individual in general and I refuse to listen to or accept comments that degrade anyone because of their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation because any individual who would demean another based on any of those things I listed above in my presence would be just as quick to demean me and that just like the comments rappers make and Imus made are unacceptable!

So it’s ok to call a black woman a hoe if she is classified as a “hood rat” and does nothing with her life? Wow Snoop Dogg and his profound wisdom, he has obviously been smoking to much weed. He is trying to justify his wrong because he should know as a man with a wife (that’s if they are still married) and children that it is NEVER acceptable to disrespect a black woman! Don Imus apologized publicly and too the young ladies involved and I think he is truly sorry for what he said. Should he have said it? HELL NO but he is trying to make up for the mistake he made.

On the other hand how many black rappers, comics or actors have apologized for their totally disrespect for black women in their everyday plight to make a dollar?

Snoop Dogg needs to stick to what he is good at smoking weed and making whack music!

Anonymous | 4/12/2007, 4:16 pm EST

why is it that when a white man makes a racist comment he is stygmatized and threatened with the loss of his job, but, at the same time, a black man can make a career out of doing the same thing?

abandonedstation | 4/12/2007, 4:21 pm EST

don imus made a dumb, offhand comment. he shouldn’t have even had to apologize. It’s beyond stupid, it’s silly. He didn’t even mean in it negative terms. He was watching predominantly black women play basketball on TV and he shot his mouth off. Why is he being attacked when the KKK is an active, legitimate organization in America?
And maybe the REVERENDS Sharpton and Jackson should forgive Imus first, and then worry about getting their interviews on the news networks.
And Snoop. Christ, Snoop, what the hell is wrong with you? The attitude that one can act in a certain way and get away with saying certain things because one is an oppressed minority is part of the reason one remains a oppressed minority. ‘When I say it’s okay to slap to bitch in my songs, it’s coming right from my soul.’ i wonder if he said this while picking up trash on the side of the interstate doing his 800 hours of community service for drugs and weapons charges.

lalarutland | 4/12/2007, 4:22 pm EST

Snoop-dogg should be banned from public speaking! First of all, what the heck are we thinking listening to someone and even considering the opinion of someone who has openly admitted to being a pimp? To hear Snoop and other rappers speaking about issues dealing with name calling and racial slurs is a joke! There is nothing “okay” about saying anything racial nor anything slanderous toward anyone. Don Imus should know at his age and being the “professional” that he is, how to speak on air and how to talk about people. I bet if someone called him a white cracker or a P.of S. honkie he would not think that is “part of a comedy act”! If everyone would keep their negative comments to themselves, and keep their mouths closed unless it was pleasant or something that would benefit the society we live in, there would not be half the junk going on, including the JUNK that IMUS started. I am a young, white, female that is so sick of hearing people speak when they obviously have not one ounce of morale or character. Maybe if people invested time in becoming more educated, the might know what the heck the golden rule is! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Snoop-Dog and Imus, go study that again in kindergarten.

Freedom of Speech is guaranteed by the Constitution. While teh advertisers and MSNBC have the freedom to kick him off the air, what type of precedent is being set?

Should Ann Coulter still be allowed to appear on Fox? Should Rush get kicked off the radio for his inflammatory statements?

What about Snoop Dogg? Was he singing the same tune when C Dolores Tucker and Jesse Jackson went after him? I think not.

The price Imus should pay for his statements shouldn’t revolve around African-American impressions about his statements or whether rappers should be penalized for what they say. Its a matter of how willing Americans are to let others decide what they should/shouldn’t be able to hear/see/enjoy. And nobody should make that decision for me.

Its sad…the whole story’s pathetic and Snoop Dogg oughtta be ashamed…not because he calls girls hos, but because he is a hypocrite.

Steve | 4/12/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Different values, but same sentiment.

You have to look into the phrase ‘nappy head hos’. They’re different for everyone. To some a nappy ho is a prostitute trying to get a ni**ga’s money. For other’s it’s a bad basketball player.

To each his own.

Steve | 4/12/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Imus and Snoop are on the same page, though, in that they don’t like nappy headed hos. They just have different definitions of what qualifies for one. Snoop likes it when you get up and get an education. Imus doesn’t like anyone or anything.

Citizens in this country, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, etc… have a constitutional right to say whatever they want, no matter how off color or irresponsible they may be. Everyone, from Rosie, to Snoop Dogg, etc… has a god given right to be an idiot, and Imus thought this was his time.

P | 4/12/2007, 4:50 pm EST

How interesting that it’s okay for Snoop to be racist towards white people “old ass white men”? Snoop’s a hypocrite and a jerk. If Snoop’s any sort of authority on this situation then that in itself is pathetic!

My Opinion | 4/12/2007, 4:51 pm EST

Snoop Dog, most of the girls on the rutgers basketball ball team and Don Imus ALL have nappy hair. Snoop Dog owns hos, there has to be at least one ho on the Rutgers girls basketball team, and Don Imus definitely pays for hos.

Jim | 4/12/2007, 5:06 pm EST

How did Imus’ statement ever turn into a racist comment? Is “nappy headed hos” simply referring to black women? Or is it because the women he was referring to are black? I’m just not sure this is to be considered racist.

Nevertheless, his comments were not very flattering and were disrespectful to women, in general. Snoop’s comment are equally asinine. ‘Hood or not, these comments are the reason discrimination of all shapes and sizes still exist.

Both men should be ashamed.

james | 4/12/2007, 5:09 pm EST

I would like to know how hypocrisy fits into your everyday beliefs. Does this ring a bell?

In 1984, during the Democratic presidential primaries, the Reverend Jesse Jackson referred to New York as “Hymietown,” with reference to the Jewish population. In case you’re not aware, “hymie” is a derogatory term used to refer to Jews. His apology was feeble at best and all he actually apologized for was getting caught for what he said, not using the insult itself.

Have you apologized to the Jewish people on the air? Have you personally been to New York to apologize to every single Jewish there? I think you were sorry that you were caught, not actually sorry for what you said. The only reason no one came out for you as you have towards Imus is because you’re black and in this society ANYTHING to do with a black person has to be treaded on lightly which is ridiculous.

What happened to you being a man of faith? You are a ‘reverend” aren’t you? What did Jesus preach? You should take out the speck in your eye first before you remark on your brothers’ speck. Forgiveness ever hear of it? You should ask forgiveness to the Jewish community AND to Imus, for not being the forgiving loving person Jesus would have liked.
You are the exact people that are keeping the racial divide strong why because you keep talking about ‘black empowerment’ What about human empowernent period? What about making the human race a strong productive loving people? Not just the blacks, or mexicans, or blacks, etc…
You as a reverend had the responsibility to practice what you preach which is forgiveness.
Matthew 7:5:
5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Mark 11:25
And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
I would like a public apology for offending me as a woman of faith Reverend and i want that apology over the airwaves and on the television.

The bottom line is what he said was racist…if he were a black man no one would have looked twice, but hes not and he should know he cant say things like that on the radio. Snoop dog is black incase you guys missed that and people PAY to listen to what he says. You dont like what he says, dont buy his cd. But what Imus said on the air is wrong…think of the young black girls that aspire to be in the WNBA and what they would think if they heard what he said…its just crazy that in 2007 people are still being racist…you can say whatever you want about this, but if a white guy said something wrong about a white woman, no one would care…if it were a black man saying something wrong about a white women, shed have him in court. Truth be told

there’s a lot of truth to what Snoop is saying. It’s all about context, and Imus was wrong. It sickens me to see the media spinning this story by placing equal blame on rappers.

Snoops observation just shows that there is no good argument for the lyrics in rap music. I didn’t expect a profound observation from Snoop, but I also didn’t expect such an idiotic one! I’m embarassed for him.

Spencer V. | 4/12/2007, 5:44 pm EST

Yea, Snoop’s right. I agree with him. I don’t even know why this has become an discussion on the meaning of Hip-Hop. The difference between the Imus situation and rap. Race. Imus is a white shock-jock that insulted a mostly black basketball team in a racist way. That’s the difference. The issue of degrading women is another matter for another day, the Imus controversy is about race, not just degrading women.

rick | 4/12/2007, 5:45 pm EST

Benjamins, plain and simple. The good and holy folks at Disney did nothing when Pat Robertson pulbicly called for the assassination of a democractically elected president of another country. Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage, Beck, the entire online parade of hate mongers at Fox “News”, they all are guilty of this slanderous behaviour. But as long as they bring in the bucks the fat corporate big boys will do nothing, ethics and morality be damned. Imus got fired because sponsors were running away. Had that not happened no amount of outrage by any public figure would have made CBS fire him. He would have served his two week suspension.
And by the way, how old are these people that are using this argument that rappers do it all the time? You can hear it all across Fox news. When I would say “yes, mom, I threw a rock, but Johnny threw one first!” I still got a whoopin and, more importantly, from those whoopins I learned that two wrongs don’t make a right. I think I learned that at about the age of 12 or something.

Sophie | 4/12/2007, 6:09 pm EST

I think Snoop is full of shit. His music, and most rap music for that matter, is demaening to all women, regardless of race. But which race predominantly condones this type of music? African American. So until black people begin to treat their own race with respect, they should not complain about what some white guy has to say about their race.

Ryoushi | 4/12/2007, 6:10 pm EST

Gotta tiptoe around the Negroes. They were oppressed you know and they’re not ready to laugh at themselves yet. At least when a white man is the one cracking the jokes.

flathairedho | 4/12/2007, 6:13 pm EST

the only crime of Don Imus was to try and sound hip in the vernicular of hip hop culture and failing…..

the lesson, if you are old and white don’t try to be hip or be very very careful

if a black celebrity or personality had said anything like this, it would have been a non issue, I can hear it flowing out of Chris Rock’s mouth as I type this……

Steel Dragon | 4/12/2007, 6:14 pm EST

I’m sick of the whole thing. Who cares. Black’s are making too big a deal about it. I think someone should start screaming the reverse when a black person calls a white person a “cracker”, or makes fun of white people. I’m sick of it on both sides. We as a society are saying it is OK for a black person to do it, but if a white person does it all hell breaks loose. Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, or any other black comedian should be held to the same standards as Michael Richards. EVERYONE should be held to the same standards, or no one should be held to those standards. We are becoming too sensitive as a nation to offend anyone of any race or culture. Political correctness sucks!!

Larmonster | 4/12/2007, 6:32 pm EST

To say the term “Nappy headed ho’s” is a racist description of black women, is, in itself degrading to black women. Nappy is an adjective meaning kinky or unkempt. To now say the term “nappy” and “ho” is racist, would mean to say that you agree that it’s an accurate description of black women, and now therefor racist?
Rock on Al Sharpton, you retard. LOL

All I have to say that it is a sad day in history when our entire nation is so focused on a comment that someone made on the air. Is this not the land of the free? What boggles my mind is that this issue is receiving more attention that much more important ones. And call me ignorant but since when is calling someone a “nappy haired ho” rascist? I’m white and have had nappy hair before.

Problem is that the punishment is worst that the crime. And I have to agree with the earlier poster that there is going to be some push back on this. It is the same “Oh my god, don’t side with the white guy” craziness that condemned the Duke players that is hanging Imus. His fans, which are millions and which I am one, are going to be pissed. We know his humor and no one is spared. I believe that he will find another place, satellite maybe, and his fans will go there and its going to be fun to listen . The best thing for the I Man is that he now knows who his friends are.

First of all, I cannot believe with our troops serving their country in the Middle East, the number of homeless people on the rise and our elderly having all that they can do to afford prescription drugs and make ends meet that such attention has been brought to this whole Don Imus situation. I’ve been watching black people on every newscast this evening talking about a “watershed moment.” Let’s be real. Let me first say that I am white, I am not a prejudice person, but all that the CBS reaction showed me was that they were afraid of repercussions from Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Let’s be real, Don Imus made a bad decision to refer to the Rutgers womens basketball team as he did and he has admitted publicly to this. Jackson and Sharpton, 2 men who are far from being role models in our society, seized an opportunity. If Imus had referred to any white person as a “nappy headed ho” it would have been a funny moment and then “next subject.” Watch a black movie or listen to a rap song. What’s the difference? And whatever happened to forgiving your fellow man? I’m sure that Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson feel that today they scored a moral victory. Let’s see how they feel when Imus goes to Sirius. It’s only a matter of time.

emily | 4/12/2007, 7:46 pm EST

personally, i dont have that much of an opinion on racism except that its wrong no matter where you put it but if some idiot thinks its okay to be a sexist just because hes black then there is definetly a problem here

KIW | 4/12/2007, 7:54 pm EST

Way too funny how people can associate hip hop with the actions pervasive throughout popular culture and media. Like all this crap began with rap music. I’m not saying hip hop doesn’t have any responsibility but I will say that he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Many of the posts on this very forum are as bad or worse than any thing Imus said. Sounds like a lot of self righteous crap. Mainstream hip-hop hasn’t been very good to black women. By contrast, though, neither has white mainstream society through depictions in media. Whether it’s your ivy-league kids having “ethnic” parties (you know dressing blackface wearing “urban” clothing), to stereotypes depicting black women as the poster children for welfare (even though the percentages overwhelming show the recipients are white women) and all sorts of negative caricatures over the course of history. Racism, and to a lesser extent, Don Imus is older than hip-hop.

Do I agree with the firing? Not really. There will be another him tomorrow to be sure. All these issues do is remind us of the much larger issues at hand with race relations. White people seem to just wanna forget about slavery. Blacks do too, to be honest. However when you’re conditioned to be something and it’s all you know, hard habit to break. Couple that with the perception of what the assumed black experience is in this country then maybe you’ll get a sense of the gravity of our plight. And if you don’t believe it to be so look at the examples above to begin. Pat yourselves on the back white people, your ancestors taught us well.

Where is Al Sharpton now? | 4/12/2007, 8:11 pm EST

Now that the Duke players had their charges dropped, where is Al and Jessee and their traveling band of racist-witch hunters? Are they gonna apologize for completely neglecting the legal process and attempting to ruin these young men’s lives? Why does anyone give two sh*ts about what Al Sharpton, Jessee Jackson, Don Imus, and SNOOP F’N DOGG have to say in the first place? They are all morons. We are heading down a scary path with this precendt set by CBS….unbelievable the double standards set in this country

Don Imus had the right to say what he did…BUT his employers had just as much of a right to fire him for offending these young women WHO DID NOTHING WRONG and ARE NOT PUBLIC FIGURES as well as their other employees, and those of the show’s contributors.
I don’t know if Don Imus should have been fired, but NONE of this would have happened if he were careful about what he said out of his mouth. He makes a living out of insulting people, and it’s fitting that his career is going down the toilet and he is being humiliated on every news station around the country. You reap what you sow.

Who takes Snoop Dogg seriously? He’s a jackass, and so are other hip-hop “artists” who spew hateful and mysogynistic lyrics. On the other hand, people can’t say that Don Imus said what he said b/c of hip-hop culture b/c the words whore, bitch, nappy-headed, and nigg*r were invented by white people. Frankly, people need to cut the racist and sexist crap in the media PERIOD.

andrew | 4/12/2007, 8:58 pm EST

how can anyone mention the duke lacross players in this situation. they are the worst excuse for human beings and they make the entire sport look terrible. its not even about weather or not they raped the girl. it was made clear that they did in fact say extremely racist things to her, plus one of the players had a prior in which he was arrested for assulting a gay person on the street. so please don’t make it seem like they are little children who need to be protected from the world. and on imus i think it is good he was fired. it sends out the messege that racism will not be tolerated in any form

Anonymous | 4/13/2007, 12:10 am EST

It was okay to use the N-word as long as white people where the ones leading the charge on saying it. Black people have decided to exclusively use the word that white people used to help separate themselves from blacks, and white people are still having an issue with very word that they supplied the English language with. So, I guess what is and isn’t okay to say depends on rather or not its is okay for white people to stay it, because , as it seems, if white people say it, its okay, but if white people can’t say it, then the word just shouldn’t be used.

As Snopp said, rappers are referring to ACTUAL HO’S. There is nothing wrong with CALLING A HO, A HO. If you provide people with sex for a living, that makes you a HO. IMUS called a bunch of college educated women “Nappy Headed Ho’s”. It is not racist or sexist to call some black chic in the hood, who has sex for a living a Black Ho, because she is both black and a Ho. However to call a group of smart, talented, and hardworking young women who are making history a bunch of “Nappy Headed Ho’s is very distasteful and can legitimately be seen as sexist and racist.

I offer no judgement to people who are Ho’s for a living, because there is nothing wrong with taking money for what people do for free on a regular basis. If someone wants to pay you for sex, then so be it if you choose to accept, and they choose to pay.

I guess in the end we have to take in consideration what is meant by things. IMUS is old (depending on ones definition of old), white, and a man. So there is nothing racist about calling him an old white man. These women where not anything that they were called in any way. The word Ho in itself, may have negative undertones, but was not created out of ignorance in order to belittle and express ignorant and racist thoughts and beliefs about a particular group of race or even sex, like the N word. It is short hand way of what, has been still is in many places a legitimate profession. So, say again that it was a combination of things that made it wrong.

Things like this have a grey area, as many things in life do. There is no clean cut black and white situation here. We seem to want everything to come in these nice binary systems thats either this or that because it gives us less choices and requires less thought about what we say or do. We are lazy and don’t want to take the time to think about what we say, when we and where we say it, or even how we say it. So we want a binary system that says either its is okay to say it or not to say it because it relieves us of the responsibility of having to think rather or not it is appropriate to say or not. I say that if you don’t want to take the time to think about what you say, then you should just be quiet and not say anything.

So the moral of this story is that it was not what he said, but how he said and who he said it to that made it so distasteful. Nothing he said about them was in any way warranted. He has the right to say , and feel as he does, but freedom of speech doesn’t mean that you wont suffer consequence for what you say. Freedom is responsibility and you are responsible for what you say, because just like your actions, your words do have consequences, even if they are not illegal. If I am a sponsor and you say something that is offensive to so many people, yes I will fire you, because I pay and invest in your show, to get listeners and customers, not lose them. He should have thought about the consequences for what he said before he said. It doesn’t matter if people should or shouldn’t be offended by it, the point is that they are offended by it, and listeners of the show and customers of sponsors are not happy with it. I would have fired him too. He failed to do his job well, the majority seems were offended and not entertained( which was his job) by what he said.

For Sharpton to consider this some kind of victory is disgusting…I’ve never listened to Imus once in my life but I felt almost as though somebody died when I heard he was fired. Al Sharpton is no leader for blacks, he is no Martin Luther King, he is a cancer. King was for peace and bringing people together…Sharpton is an ambulance chaser that has achieved absolutely nothing but opening an even greater social divide between races. This is a terrible victory for a terrible man….sad day…

auramac | 4/13/2007, 12:37 am EST

Snoop is a sleazeball, I have no repect for or interest in him. Imus’s remarks were way over the line, but even more horrifying was the hypocrisy and public lynching that ensued- it was like witnessing a murder. Limbaugh, and yes- Sharpton and Jackson are guilty of the same crimes. But Sharpton “purifying” the airwaves for us? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Wave~ | 4/13/2007, 12:39 am EST

If Don Imus was black they would have given him a standing ovation and he would have been on Jay Leno the very next night with praises on such a witty saying.

Simon | 4/13/2007, 1:03 am EST

i doubt snoop would say such things just after the whole don imus episode. this has got to be fake.

Chris A. | 4/13/2007, 1:18 am EST

Why the fuck is people interviewing somebody like Snoop Dogg for this story. What involvement does he have with the Rutgers b-ball team or Imus? None at all. He’s just a stupid rapper that sings about nothing important and talks about nothing important. America is getting fucking rediculous these days.

Everybody says things at one point or another that arent exactly politically correct, but as the great Bill Cosby once said.

“If your worried about offending somebody, you’ll never be successful”

The quote sums it all up, Thank You.

Reverend… (haha!) Al Sharpton…
Did he have to take time off from his real job to go after Don Imus?
Oh, wait… this is what he does.
Professional Blowhard.
And Jesse…(what daughter?) Jackson.
Can’t we all get back to ‘Hymietown’?
All props to Rutgers Women’s Hoops though. They deserve respect. They earned it.

papabear | 4/13/2007, 6:08 am EST

Jesus, anyone ever listen to Man Coulter? Although Imus was over the line why was anyone surprised/offended? This has been going on for years with the Limbaughs/Likus’ really meaning what they say.

There are no double standards for people. If you are owned by a larger company and your job is to entertain and you fail to do so, then you are not following what your job description entails. However, when you don’t entertain and go so far as to make a racist and sexist comment that was specifically targeted towards a majority black basketball team, then that creates a problem. I would have fired him as well because as a sponsor I’m paying him to do his job, not make me lose money. I don’t agree with what he says, but I will defend his right to say it. He also has to understand that for everything there is a consequence, and hopefully this will make the notion prominent that especially when you are in the public eye you just cannot make statements like this. Imus was a screw-up and unfortunately he lost his jobs, but now I bet he and other radio hosts will be more careful about what they say. Now to deal with rapper. I’m tired of everyone trying to pin the blame or shift the focus on hip-hop and rap because the predominantly white field of rock uses demeaning terms towards women to and idolize sex and drugs. If you don’t believe me check out Panic! At the Disco’s “I write sin not tragedies”, and Guns N Roses “Anything Goes” and you’ll see what I mean. It’s not fair and people need to realize that

Kaliya | 4/13/2007, 7:12 am EST

As a young black female who likes hip-hop, I personally feel that it’s wrong for ANYONE, whether it’s a rapper or an “old-ass white man” to refer to members of my race and gender at large as “nappy-headed hos.” I believe in freedom of speech, so I also think that imposing new censorship laws would be wrong (where would that end?), but rappers need to realize the effect that they, as role models, have on millions of young men in America. While they might be able to differentiate between “hos” and repsectable black women in their own minds, what the majority of their listeners hear is the generalization of females of color as easy, disrepectable golddiggers.

Billy | 4/13/2007, 7:28 am EST

White people are so scared of black people

Kaliya | 4/13/2007, 7:32 am EST

correction to my other comment – I was talking about rappers like Snoop who regurlarly refer to women as “hos” and “bitches,” not about all rappers in general

Will | 4/13/2007, 8:06 am EST

Let’s try to get real here, if only for a minute.

I think this is the first (and probably only) time I’ve seen Don Imus’ name even mentioned on the rollingstone.com front page. It’s true that he’s been a shock-jock for more than 20 (hell probably 30) years, but to claim that he’s still relevant to the 18-34 demographic is insane. I’m 22 and I can truthfully say that most of my friends either have never heard of Imus, or they simply don’t care about him that much. That said, firing him will not have the changing effect that people like Sharpton and Jackson want for society… the man just is not that important/popular. Besides which, and someone already rightly posted this, Imus will find work elsewhere, be it at one of the big two satellite companies (XM or Sirius) or at another television station. And even if that doesn’t happen, he’s bound to have some money saved up after being on the air for so long. Point: people have used this kind of derogatory language before the Imus incident, and they’ll continue to do so long after it’s faded from the headlines.

Don’t take this to mean that I condone Imus’ actions – I don’t, and still feel that his initial suspension, public apologies, and want of apologizing to the Rutgers’ womens’ basketball team face to face are not only right calls on his part, but expected. And yet, what more can the man do, or is there anything else he can do? I don’t have an answer for that, but I do believe that this issue should be addressed publicly beyond Don Imus. As has been mentioned many times on this forum, why should rappers who claim to represent “da hood” have a pass to say these things when others are attacked so viciously for the same action? And to all the naysayers who agree with Snoop’s above comment, go listen to D12’s “Pimp Like Me” and then honestly tell me it’s not offensive in any way, regardless of what the song is claiming to represent.

One more thing: Imus was fired because the sponsors pulled out. If they hadn’t, I guarantee all of you that while he wouldn’t be on television, he would still have his radio show.

Mike D | 4/13/2007, 8:16 am EST

Did Imus get the cover of TIME before this even *blew-up*?
It’s all a premeditated mess aimed at putting money in sponsors pockets…

Mrs. Broadus | 4/13/2007, 8:23 am EST

Snoop Dogg generating any kind of statement has got to be one of the most ridiculous acts this Pocahontas Look-A-Like Moron ever did. This is the very same Black Lady that perpetuates violence and female degradation on a daily basis in the trash recordings he peddles to the weak and feeble minded following of his.

Listen up Sweets, Braids went out with yesterdays news. They don’t even put them on kid’s dolls anymore. Oh that’s right, they remind you of when you were incarcerated and the rest of the thugs used them as reins. I’d bet the ranch on that. Go back in your weed induced comma!

White Foolio | 4/13/2007, 8:25 am EST

I am just glad Imus did not open his radio segment with “fo’ sheezy mah neezy.” I do not like seeing buildings set-on-fire. White people, please leave the ghetto slang at the door…you ain’t no good, cause you ain’t from the hood. Fo’ shizzle.

white guys opinion | 4/13/2007, 8:47 am EST

Snoop makes a valid point which would come off in a more respectable manner if he used better grammer.

John | 4/13/2007, 8:50 am EST

Since when is it wrong to offend someone? Freedom of speech is very simple

cbass | 4/13/2007, 9:03 am EST

I dont no if anyone knows this but the Imus show is supposed to be funny. He said this as a joke i dont think anyone actualy thought that he was indcating these girls were having sex for money.Imus or anyone else has the right to say anything he wants If you dont like what he says then dont listen to his show.Having the media and hypocrites like al sharpton be our censors is avery scary thing for me. One last thing why is it ok for people like Jesse Jackson and Al sharpton to Call white people and jews inflamotory names (not as a joke either). But some old white shock jock says something distastful trying to get a laugh the media wants to lynch him. If the black comunity really looks at these two so called revernds as there leaders then god help us all.

Sanchez | 4/13/2007, 9:15 am EST

Time to turn off TV, if my coffee time has to be with fluffed up joy-filled poorly delivered drugged up smiling phony idiot hosts on some ‘Goodmorning show’…Where’s the alternative now?
The :o ff: button.

What’s the matter Little Snoop?
Not a “Nappy Camper”?

frost | 4/13/2007, 10:41 am EST

So there are different rules for blacks and whites now? For shame, equality. Maybe we should have “old white dudes” sit in a different part of the bus as “nig–s from da hood”, huh snoop? Equality is such bullsnot in this country. If it’s a ‘crime’ for one person, then it’s a ‘crime’ for everyone. Double standard idiots.

Anonymous | 4/13/2007, 10:54 am EST

Snoop Dogg is at least as big a racist as Don Imus; But Imus was fired, and deservedly so, because he was bad for business. The first amendment doesn’t protect your job; if you call a client a “nappy headed ho” I’m pretty certain your boss is going to fire you. Unless, (and lucky for Snoop), your client doesn’t mind so much. When people stop buying Snoop Dogg albums (and please lets stop buying those albums, there’s much better rap music out there), he’ll disappear into a cloud of marijuana smoke. (And that goes for every other derivative rap act that sells a fantasy world where everyone is a hustler and pimp.)

This statement is something that a small minded individual would make. The sad part of it all is is someone referred to his mother as b—- or h- he would be ready to fight or kill the person, espcially if he were a whtite man. I am so tired of people feeling that Imus was justified and no one should be offended. Be mindfull becuase it can happen to you and be prepared not to react or seek in type of resititue. Lastly is is a shame that African-American males degridate their females to the extent that they do in Hip-Hop and Rapp Music. How can you demand respect from others if you are not willing to give it to self first and to project that iamge to others. I am a female and am highly offended by what Snoop and Imus both are saying there is not explanation, rhym or reason to the sick perceptions. Oh yes Snoop think back, some people were referring to your wife as a H- and a B—- for being with you for your money becasue she aurely at this current time does not make the funds to support the life style you have afforded her.

didi | 5/1/2007, 2:15 pm EST

i for one feel very stromg on this subject being a girl i think that rap is very offensive i think that imus should stay off the air and that rappers should try and here girls side on this subject

Rarely have I posted anything on the Web. While ’surfing’ this day, I happened onto Mr. Dogg’s commentary. Now, I am compelled to post.

I was born in Long Beach too, and have seen it change over time. It has not changed for the better. And in his way, Mr. Dogg has not helped.

Mr. Dogg HAS helped re-define a very important word, as well as concept. Now, ‘respect’ means FEAR. SO RESPEK ME, or I BE PUT A CAP IN YO’ ASS.

As an example of how Long Beach has changed, the ‘Whistler’ record store on Anaheim Street, a place that helped launch Mr. Dogg’s career, is a scary place even for persons of color to be anywhere near, for fear of ‘homies’ expressing themselves with Tech-9’s, etc.

Mr. Dogg seems PROUD to have been- and MAYBE in his heart STILL IS, a member of the ‘Crips’ street gang, which started here in LA county.

Because of the hateful/wrongheaded gangsta/thugg/banger/sexist
l ifestyle Mr. Dogg promotes, and because those sort of persons seem to be ubiquitous in Long Beach any-
more, I have sadly chosen to retire in a place far away from all these loser/spiteful/anti-Christian/ ner-do-wells, because life in Long Beach is no longer tolerable for kind, gentle, caring
and peaceful people. The Bible tells me about the ‘Latter Days’ and the kind of depraved creatures that appear as human beings, BUT ARE THAT ONLY in appearance.

MTV has Mr. Dogg and every other filthy-mouthed ‘rap-artist’ on 24/7, and I truly feel they are helping to lead the young and vulnerable down a path leading to
hate, jealousy, envy, false pride,
resentment, self-centerdness and
unabashed arrogance.

Please join me in prayer for Mr. Dogg and his ilk, that they may come to the realisation that love,
kindness, and all that REALLY MATTERS will come to their hearts; that their talents and positions may cease to be used for the negative, and that in the end,
they may find the TRUTH which is GOD’S LOVE.

I forgive you, Mr. Dogg. Jesus taught that lesson 2000 years ago,
and since I’m a Christian, I forgive you; and THAT, for me, really IS hard to do.

Please join me in prayer. End the hate. Start the love.

Jambeer | 9/15/2007, 6:05 pm EST

Looking through these comments makes me pretty sure that most white people are BASICALLY racist and what more…they don’t know shit about hip-hop…but still wanna crack some dumb joke to look ‘intelligent’

Cucumberupyourass | 2/14/2008, 6:35 pm EST

If you pasties are going to call black people a slur, then just type the whole damn thing you cowards. If you want to type nigger then do so. If you want to type coon then do so. I don’t give a damn what snoop thinks, or that Don Beast Imus says ignorant shit to get ratings. Don doesn’t bother me at all, because at least I know this man is a bigot and proud of it. A lot of white people these days hide their racism under “well I have a lot of black friends, so I am not racist”, but when you get around your white buddies you just can’t seem to stop saying nigger. I am not a politically correct person, and I don’t believe blacks or whites will ever get along. Not when you have one group who is condescending as hell, racist, feels they are superior to others, and tries very hard to hide anything dealing with blacks and their history. Don Imus can say whatever the hell he wants. I would rather have white people like him on television then a lot of you pussy as white folks here. At least I know what this man truly thinks of me. I don’t have to deal with an undercover racist who purposefully has minorities as friends, because they fear being called racist when they really are.
