Kurt Vonnegut Jr. died today and woe is us! We’re in a lot of trouble. One of the most outspoken, angriest critics of Dupeya & his minions has passed on, dropped the baton & we better pick it up & get after it, before we are fitted for a casket, straight-jacket or a cage in Gitmo.

Blowing in the Wind – Bob Dylan
From A Buick 6 – Bob Dylan
The Other One – Grateful Dead
My Death – David Bowie
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) – Jimi Hendrix
She Said She Said – The Beatles
The Oath – Jerm

i like it in the butt!

e | 4/12/2007, 9:49 am EST

I’m sure Vonnegut would have chuckled at the fact that you’ve suggested he’s “in the sky.”

the great gig in the sky – pink floyd

And so it goes…

Dan | 4/12/2007, 9:58 am EST

This is a sad day…I usually don’t pay attention to celebrity deaths, but this one hit me rather hard. His books changed my life, or so I thought, when I read through them all in college.

“A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” – Dylan

Watchdog | 4/12/2007, 10:12 am EST

Good Man Gone – The Waterboys

Hobie Baker | 4/12/2007, 10:13 am EST

He’s definitely up in space somewhere… Rest well, Mr. Vonnegut. And thanks for all the good words. (And nice one managing to leave us at the same age as Kilgore. The conspiracy-minded among us will never stop thinking you somehow did it on purpose…)

“Slaughterhouse Death Camp” – G.G. Allin
“Sirens of Titan” – Al Stewart
“When You Read This I’ll Be Gone” – Paul K & the Weathermen
“Writing To Reach You” – Travis
“Kilgore Trout” – The Appleseed Cast
“Breakfast of Champions” – Rainer Maria
“Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” – Baz Luhrmann
(Yes, I know that last one doesn’t really feature words by Kurt — but so many people believe it does, so it seems appropriate)

James | 4/12/2007, 11:35 am EST

Truly a sad day in literature. A genius, plain and simple.

Jared | 4/12/2007, 11:36 am EST

Who else exposed the bitter sweet lies of life in such affecting and compasionate ways? Today our karass is less. Goodnight Kurt.

Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd
Entertain- Sleater/Kinney
Hurdy Gurdy Man- Donovan

Geoff | 4/12/2007, 11:44 am EST

The End by The Doors…duh.

Kilgore Trout | 4/12/2007, 11:49 am EST

Couldn’t agree with James more, Vonnegut was a true genius. A hundred years from now, he will be known as the greatest American author ever. Apologies to Twain.

Kurt Vonnegut’s peephole opened 84 years ago, he lived his life, wrote a few books and died a week after falling over in New York…

So it goes……

Goodbye Kurt, thank you for showing this planet does have intelligent human beings after all!!

ME | 4/12/2007, 12:44 pm EST

Where does “Breakfast of Champions” rank? This is the only Vonnegut book I have read and didn’t particularly like it. Is this a good representation of his work, or should I read something else of his?

Me | 4/12/2007, 12:49 pm EST

My favorite Kurt Vonnegut moment:
his appearance in “Back to School” with Rodney Dangerfield

[after Diane gives Thornton an 'F' for his report, which was actually written by Kurt Vonnegut]
Diane: Whoever *did* write this doesn’t know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut!
[cut to Thornton's dorm suite]
Thornton Melon: [on the phone] … and *another* thing, Vonnegut! I’m gonna stop payment on the cheque!
[Kurt tells him off]
Thornton Melon: Fuck me? Hey, Kurt, can you read lips, *fuck you*! Next time I’ll call Robert Ludlum!

The Mound | 4/12/2007, 10:10 pm EST

“I am honorary president of the American Humanist Association, having succeeded the late, great, spectacularly prolific writer and scientist, Dr. Isaac Asimov in that essentially functionless capacity. At an A.H.A. memorial service for my predecessor I said, “Isaac is up in Heaven now.” That was the funniest thing I could have said to an audience of humanists. It rolled them in the aisles. Mirth! Several minutes had to pass before something resemble solemnity could be restored.
So when my own time comes to join the choir invisible or whatever, God forbid, I hope someone will say, “He’s up in Heaven now.” Who really knows? I could have dreamed all this.”
