J. Lo on “Idol”: Like the Blind Leading the (Tone) Deaf

4/12/07, 12:48 pm EST

This was Jennifer Lopez week on American Idol, and the results speak for themselves. In case you’re too young to remember, Jennifer Lopez was a popular movie/music personality from the early ’00’s, starring in movies like The Cell and Maid in Manhattan. Her hit records included I’m Real and My Love Don’t Cost a Thing. Her singing voice was kind of like Sanjaya’s, but not as pretty, and if you heard “I’m Real” for the first time today, you might find it hard to believe it got played on the radio a heck of a lot, but it did, for reasons later elucidated by the New York attorney general’s office. But suffice it to say that inviting Jennifer Lopez to spend an hour telling other people how to sing better is brilliant — like a Billy Joel driving lesson or a yoga class with Mo Vaughn. Could you hurry it up, Jen? I’m meeting Wesley Snipes later, he’s gonna help me fill out my 1040-EZ form. Don’t worry, Halle Berry’s giving me a ride.

As for the other Haley, Miss Scarnato’s journey ended last night, after one of the many Gloria Estefan tributes on a Latin night when the only Idol with the cojones to sing in Spanish was Sanjaya “Blow Me Mucho” Malakar. No surprise — as our Jenny Eliscu brilliantly put it yesterday, Haley was like “the talent portion of a Miss America competition, minus the talent portion of the talent portion.” But for the rest of her life, Haley can say she learned whiny, nasal, tone-deaf bleating from the best: Jennifer Lopez. Meanwhile, does Jennifer’s appearance mean (1) she wants to start singing for Ja Rule again, (2) she’s out boosting her public profile on behalf of this awesome new secret celebrity religion she joined with that guy who was the Fresh Prince or Urkel or something, or (3) she wants to remind producers her phone hasn’t been shut off? All I know is, “Bailamos” blew. Adios, Haley. Silencio — no hay banda.

J.Lo can’t sing at all. I’ve been saying that since she dropped her first single. Her fan based is pretty significant, so they will buy whatever she puts out, but saying that she can really sing is hilarious. Any young girl from anyone’s church choir can sing better than J.Lo.

So Jennifer’s husband didn’t pay his taxes for five years? No wonder she’s going back to work.

Here, we go again. Rob Sheffield, trying to be and “witty” in all his pathetic glory. Not only are you a painfully obvious, misogynistic racist, as exemplified by your constant personal attacks against Jennifer Lopez, but you just can’t stand the fact that a colored woman, whom you’d rather wish to be cleaning your toilet instead, earns more money in her french manicured pinky finger, than your white ass will ever accumulate in your entire professional life. I’m sure your comforted in the fact that you can hide behind your ridiculous blogging and pages of words, and at the same time still consider yourself a formidable “journalist and critic.” The only person you’re fooling is yourself. Yea Rob, keep sulking in your own frustrated misery because no one takes you seriously. It makes for idiotic amusing write-ups like your “review” above.

Brianna | 4/13/2007, 11:54 am EST

Okay, why on earth was J.Low on AI giving advice to aspiring singers on how to sing? That’s like William Hung giving financial advice to Donald Trump. American Idol just lost alot of credibility right there.

erewane | 4/13/2007, 11:36 am EST

We all know JLO is not a good singer. Unfortunately in today’s society the whole package is what counts and boy is she a looker.

king phillip the horse | 4/13/2007, 10:44 am EST

It will be intersting to see what manufactured pop star AI pulls out next. A bullfrog could do better than J-Lo.

fisnoster | 4/13/2007, 10:31 am EST

Studio magic makes anyone sound decent. I bet with the right tech and producer even Sanjaya would sound ok. Live is a different story.

Why does the real talent always seem to go unrecognized? I lost most of my respect for AI when Fantasia won but the rest was lost when Taylor beat Chris.

steve | 4/13/2007, 5:55 am EST

first of all im not a Jennifer Lopez fan.But I do wanna say this first to bryan-ive watched the grammys too and jennifer’s performance was good.I think your a big racist. As a singer in my church choir I personally think Jlo’s not that bad.Obviously she’s not Celine Dion. You dont have to be so cynical.U think she’s bad because you hate her thats it.Lets be realistic here…what about Elvis and John Lennon..are they better than Mariah carey?Duh!!!!!no.

oh sherrie | 4/13/2007, 12:32 am EST

Ha great review. But what about those militaristic thigh high boots on J Lo and the dancers, huh?

*wink*

w/e | 4/12/2007, 11:41 pm EST

J Lo wasn’t bad at all. you guys have no idea what you are talking about. that article was so stupid i m posting a comment about it.

SB | 4/12/2007, 10:50 pm EST

J-Lo can’t sing. Neither can Madonna, Britney Spears, Brian Adams(at least he can write), Ricky Martin, etc. They still end up on the RS cover anyway. So will Sanjaya one day promoting a tour/CD with Red Hot Chilly Peppers(they should be on AI). Never say never. A show or magazine that promotes celebrities without talent is what music entertainment media is all about. Howard Stern is pissed because he didn’t think of it first. Just turn off the sound. J-Lo can’t sing. So what. Baby got back.

Rob Sheffield | 4/12/2007, 10:43 pm EST

Sanjaya isn’t the best singer, but as a writer for rollingstone I must admit that young, lean body of his excites me to no end. I drool at the … never mind.

AT any rate, to the peons in this group. I command you to bow before my superior knowledge!

Sue | 4/12/2007, 10:29 pm EST

LOL. Wow, I’ve gone to so many news groups were trolls talk nonsense. It always amuses me when they let trolls like Rob Sheffield write columns.

Blues Fan | 4/12/2007, 9:44 pm EST

Phil, just because you don’t care for Taylor Hicks doesn’t mean that others didn’t like him. In the South, we think he rocks! His performance in Birmingham was sold out immediately! To each his own.

Krzysztof Kieslowski | 4/12/2007, 9:32 pm EST

This website sux! Can’t read it cuz of this SSHUGE black column on the left page! NOT IMPRESSED~!

willy the worm | 4/12/2007, 8:51 pm EST

sanjaya is a joke. AI is a joke. i stopped watching when that little girl cried all over herself and they just couldnt stop showing her on the screen. i would not even let sanjaya blow me.

Nahua444 | 4/12/2007, 8:46 pm EST

Rob Sheffield, You BLOW. Sanjaya did great on Tuesday and JLo gave a great performance as well. She was great in mentoring the group. She gave positive suggestions and was very supportive of all of them. Not like Gwen telling everyone to “just sing the song like it is.” You may think JLo has no talent, but who is the one with the big bucks in the bank? Not YOU.

Marina | 4/12/2007, 8:39 pm EST

Rolling on the floor… laughing my ass off.

you guys are the bomb. Very Funny.

She’s a great dancer, beautiful … you know the deal.

… much love … Never Stop Moving

Phil | 4/12/2007, 8:20 pm EST

But J-Lo does have a smokin’ ass!

Phil | 4/12/2007, 8:17 pm EST

You know the producers at AI are idiots because they keep bringing Paula back. I think in her case AI stands for artificial intelligence!I hope Sanjaya wins and it will make them think next time they “fix” the contest like they did with that Taylor Hicks joke of a performer. Let the He-She from India prevail!

emily | 4/12/2007, 7:52 pm EST

who cares? its the little ten year old girls who are voting for the pretty girls and the cute guys. and they should be, considering that teenyboppers are the only ones stupid enough to buy the records

Your all stupid | 4/12/2007, 7:27 pm EST

First off I highly dout ANY of you are singing coach’s and/or pitch experts so why do you even think you can make comments on ANYONES singing? On the off chance you are a singer/vocal coach then yes a few of J-lo’s note were A TINY BIT off but thats the reality of a live perfomance and NO singer is always absolutley perfect every show, it just doesnt happen. All in all if you just see the show on a regular basis and think that makes you an expert on the subject your dead wrong and its people like you who make singers like me very angry when you try to judge our voices.

Pockets | 4/12/2007, 6:16 pm EST

If Elvis were alive and in the group, his ass would be voted off and Sanjaya would stay…the fix is in, signed sealed and delivered. One day this kid is going to wake up and say….”I was embarrassed in front of millions of people”, whose ass do I sue, for letting this fraud continue. What kid out there that considers him / her self to have talent would subject themselves to this ridicule, only a no-mind…you got to believe that this show has lost a ton of credibility with anyone who has any brains at all. And J-Lo giving advice, that is like Shrub Bush leading a Peace March, honey it just doesn’t compute….

Michael | 4/12/2007, 6:10 pm EST

Sanjaya Malakar…excuse me…he is still there? I stopped watching some time ago, because of that no talent. Now J Lo is giving the kid ‘advice’ on how to sing..hellllllooooooooooooo… is everyone brain dead.

Latin Lover | 4/12/2007, 5:47 pm EST

With an ass like that I don’t care if she can sing at all !

J-lo blows | 4/12/2007, 5:40 pm EST

when was she ever a good singer? a bunch of idiots bought into her hype and the whole latino music thing for 5 minutes. if you bought a j-lo or ricky martin album, please stop buying music.

sjerseycraig | 4/12/2007, 5:03 pm EST

So I’m not the only one who found J.Lo’s performance last night unendurable. What do people see in her?

Ramiro | 4/12/2007, 5:00 pm EST

Sanjaya Malakar is very BEST boy. I like Sanjaya. Fantastic boy.

the boss | 4/12/2007, 4:30 pm EST

You guys got it wrong, but keep voting for Sanjaya, because it will inject a shot of engery into American Idol that will make it bigger than ever. Power to the little people, lies from the establishment and envey to the wantabes, kiss off.

aron | 4/12/2007, 3:39 pm EST

So much ignorance. Jenifer Lopez was great last night. I don’t understand the bitterness of the drug culture.

1960 fan | 4/12/2007, 2:48 pm EST

what?

pop_culture++; | 4/12/2007, 2:47 pm EST

jeeze! go easy on the celeb references. I got the one about halle driving but thats only by watching family guy.

1960 fan | 4/12/2007, 2:45 pm EST

J lo Now why did she sing spanish? it sounded pretty but couldn’t understand a thing.

Morgan | 4/12/2007, 2:35 pm EST

Taco flavored kisses…funny. That was a good Southpark

Rasputin | 4/12/2007, 2:33 pm EST

I’m with nathan. I’m pushing for that Sanjaya thing to win. When he/she/it wins, it will completely destroy the integrity of the show. And as much as I love one hit wonders who won a glorified talent competition on TV, I could do without them.

nathan | 4/12/2007, 2:17 pm EST

How funny will it be when Sanjaya wins and destroys American Idol. He’s like the Trojan horse that fudged over Troy.

Image of a Glassman | 4/12/2007, 1:58 pm EST

J-Lo coaching on American Idol is like calling out a retarded kid for double dribble while playing basketball.

J Lo | 4/12/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Just because you aint got no money doesn’t mean I won’t give you taco flavored kisses honey. 3 tacos 2 tostadas and a soda pop.

G.R.I.T.S. | 4/12/2007, 1:51 pm EST

i can’t beleive that the retards on AI would actually bring her on the show, no wonder people arent taking the show seriously anymore!!!

Aaron | 4/12/2007, 1:47 pm EST

Not only did they filter her voice, they also hid her giant buttocks in all her videos. J-Lo is one of the biggest musical swindles I’ve ever seen.

Morgan | 4/12/2007, 1:39 pm EST

As Johnny Cockran would say “This is an outrage!”- AI of course. This show has reached new jaw droping heights of suckdom, every week. It just gets worse and worse. The only possible good thing that I can say for AI is that it’s inspiring some pretty fuckin funny commentary out of RS. And J-lo? (yeah, it wasn’t too long ago she was like, ultra popular and very mainstream….apparently we are that dumb and have no taste)
side note on this sad day: What would have Kurt Vonnnegut wanted? Surely not Idol. There’s just a whole lot of stuff thats not very good about pop culture right now. Very very bad. I’m depressed

pskidmore | 4/12/2007, 1:37 pm EST

Does anyone know why J-lo is married to Marc Anthony? I bet it isn’t because he owes $2.5 million in back taxes…

Jim | 4/12/2007, 1:34 pm EST

Rob Sheffield writing about singing is like Imus covering the Vibe awards…

Bryan | 4/12/2007, 1:12 pm EST

Yeah, J-Lo is a horrible singer. If you saw her performance with Marc Anthony at the 2005 Grammy Awards, you will notice her voice being out of key and just awful.
