Weekend Rock List: Rock’s Undisputed Guilty Pleasures

4/6/07, 5:53 pm EST

Some of us still have a thing for Bush or Paula Abdul or RuPaul. That’s cool. To each his or her own and all that. But there are some artists who unequivocally leave much to be desired in terms of, say, quality or coolness, but still manage to rock, or at least inspire serious if shameful adoration on a mass scale. It’s these artists that we’re interested in. Artists who absolutely belong on a best guilty pleasures ever list, because that’s what we’re creating.

You remember the rules from last week: We post five nominations today. Over the weekend you tell us what you’d add and on Monday we put up the definitive list.

Here are our five. See ya Monday!

  • Kelly Clarkson
  • Neil Diamond
  • En Vogue
  • Hall & Oates
  • Journey

rush is the best band ever period. I will no longer be subscribing to your totally unincitful magazine.

joke's on us | 8/18/2007, 2:58 pm EST

looks like RS disregarded what everyone here posted and decided to put Rush at no. 1 anyway. Why does RS hate Rush so much? Obviously blinded by a false ideology. How facist.

Sorry, you’re going to have to take Rush off of there. One of the few bands that never sold out in a long career, so I listen to them with pride. Besides, alternative time signatures is too cerebral to be a guilty pleasure. Finally, you’re looking at arguably the best drummer ever, and certainly one of the best bassists.

RNRGirl | 4/12/2007, 2:17 pm EST

Are you crazy??? I am proud to say I am a Rush fan and always will be. Amazing musicians and good role models for young people. I am a music teacher and I even encourage my high school students to listen to them! We need more musicians out there like them!

And yes, I already have my tickets for their Snakes and Arrows tour this summer…

Guilty pleasure - Boston.

List Reader | 4/9/2007, 2:35 pm EST

The Monkees still being considered a guilty pleasure 40 years later? I thought all the hipsters finally “got” The Monkees and the wealth of great material they have. Must be something to them…people still listen/care/talk about them enough for them to make these lists.

Same thing goes for Duran Duran…who absolutely kicked in concert when I saw the original lineup 2 years ago.

Mm Hm | 4/9/2007, 2:31 pm EST

Chuck Klosterman setteled it a couple years ago in his column in Esquire: there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure. It’s not important what you like - what is important is WHY you like it. E.L.O. rocks!

If I see Radiohead on this list one more time I’m going to vomit. Are people just using this as a chance to write down their favorite bands without looking at the question? Some guy put Radiohead, Interpol, and Wilco on his short list. Disgusting.

abandonedstation | 4/9/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Mm Hm was right to mention Klosterman’s article saying that there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure when it comes to music. It’s music. You like it or you don’t. How can you possibly be ashamed of sound preference? Just because you like music that critics rag on doesn’t make it a guilty pleasure.

That said: Madonna’s song ‘Hung Up’. And half of Kid Rock’s ‘Devil without a Cause’.

NoShows | 4/9/2007, 12:06 pm EST

a lot of the cheesy pop that came out around 1997-98 - Aqua comes to mind.

ABBA is a guilty pleasure for everyone who is old enough to remember when it was uncool to like them. I’m not :) .

Third Eye Blind for sure, still listen to them though

Vanilla Ice is a guilty pleasure of course! “Ice Ice Baby!” rocks!
QUEEN can never ever be in the guilty pleasure list, unless you screw the guilty.

mandrake | 4/9/2007, 12:06 am EST

Hootie and the Blowfish definately.

Reg | 4/9/2007, 12:03 am EST

How ’bout any Andrew Lloyd Webber music. Or just show tunes in general.

How about most country. Garth Brooks is good, but he ain’t getting remembered quite the way you would think he should.

Someone said, the Chili Peppers. I’m so confused. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are possibly the least guilty pleasure out there.

Jared | 4/9/2007, 12:00 am EST

I’d have to add Third Eye Blind, Styx Shania Twain, and the Titanic Soundtrack

Dave | 4/8/2007, 11:46 pm EST

3. Ace Of Base

Dokken, but at least George Lynch gives the band some credibility.

Mal | 4/8/2007, 10:16 pm EST

What about The Alan Parsons Project? Don’t pretend that you don’t love “Eye In The Sky”! I would also add ELO and Genesis.

the maninabluehouse | 4/8/2007, 10:05 pm EST

i think a couple of abba tunes and i think somebody mention richard marx. i used to used to have the tape to richard marx when i was a kid, i’m glad i lost it.

Chuck T in Minneapolis | 4/8/2007, 9:43 pm EST

The concept of “guilty pleasures” is completely stupid. The music is the music. Your feelings about it are just that. If you like something, listen to it. If you don’t like something, don’t listen to it. If you hear something you like, but feel guilty about it for some reason, take it up with your therapist. Because the music doesn’t change depending on who is listening to it. Everybody needs to get over themselves, and just go with whatever moves you.

nick | 4/8/2007, 9:10 pm EST

Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. I love ELO! I’d also add Panic at the Disco and Scissor Sisters.

JK | 4/8/2007, 8:11 pm EST

Styx
Meatloaf
ELO
and…
G eorge freakin’ Michael

JP | 4/8/2007, 8:09 pm EST

I wouldn’t add En Vogue or Kelly Clarkson (Maybe her first album) to the list. They are actually good. I can begrudgedly add Hall & Oates to the “Not Guilty” list as well.

Guilty pleasure for me is something I know I should hate because it’s unoriginal and banal, but I don’t.

1. Phil Collins
2. George Michaels
3. Billy Joel
4. The Monkees
5. Poison

I think you guys need to do a list of songs that are guilty pleasures. When I was doing this list, I kept thinking about all those one hits wonders that I liked but are guilty pleasures like “Mickey”, “I’m Too Sexy” and “Baby Got Back”.

John | 4/8/2007, 8:05 pm EST

I’m not embarrassed to say I like ELO and I think they deserve more respect, but I’m usually careful to not play all but a few songs in front of others. I know every word to ‘Jungle’ but only when I’m singing alone.

Snook | 4/8/2007, 8:00 pm EST

Third Eye Blind
Foreigner
Shakira

All-American Rejects
Linkin Park
Panic! At the Disco
Phil Collins

How come multiple people have put Radiohead on their lists? Since when do you have to feel guilty about a band like them?

P.S. I refuse to follow the anti-Coldplay trend and put Coldplay on my guilty pleasures list. I don’t think I should feel any shame.

the first two albums really had their moments……..

okay, the top5:
5. Belinda Carlisle
4. Steve Winwood

Why would any one feel guilty about loving ELO?? They’re one of the best bands ever!!! And Hall and Oates are great!!
Guilty pleasures for me would be if I liked someone like Barry Manilow, which I don’t. Anyone I listen to - I don’t feel guilty about. And neither should you.

-The Monkees, mostly because they weren’t a real band.

After reading through these answers, alot of people are confused about the topic - and by alot - i mean 90 percent of the answers. Youre supposed to list guilty pleasures like new kids on the block or backstreet boys. Not old rock bands like Rush or cheap trick.

Oh man, before I even looked around I was ready to list Boston, Tears for Fears, and Bee Gees of course. Not to mention Kelly Clarkson. I do have a hard time feeling “guilty” about stuff I like though.

Michael Jackson has become a high contender for this list I would think, with how un-cool he has become. Still, what great tunes!

my guilty pleasure musicans would have to be Journey (though i do not deny i like them), some Hall&Oates (or hallin’oats) and the incomparable Stevie Wonder.

Joey | 4/7/2007, 8:08 pm EST

REO Speedwagon rules the world!!!

Damn the critics, what do they know?

PinballWizard | 4/7/2007, 8:01 pm EST

Paul McCartney- Some of his solo stuff is so dorky and cheesy

Lynryd Skynryd- I feel a little bad whenever I hear Sweet Home Alabama and they bash Neil Young. Plus there’s the guilt about listening to a band with conservative politics

Beach Boys- I love Pet Sounds as much as the next guy, but there’s nothing very cool about them. They always seemed to be presented as good boys. Maybe it’s because they were Ronald Reagan’s favorite band.

Joe | 4/7/2007, 7:30 pm EST

The Bee Gees.
Duran Duran.
Boston.
Tears for Fears.

Honorable mention to the soundtracks for the following movies.

Chuck Klosterman setteled it a couple years ago in his column in Esquire: there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure. It’s not important what you like - what is important is WHY you like it. E.L.O. rocks!

Taylor | 4/7/2007, 1:47 pm EST

C’mon people you’ve got to dig deep to make the list of guilty pleasures…if it stings to admit it, then your headed down the right path

Vanilla Ice (and not rap vanilla, rock circa ‘98 vanilla)
Enigma (what can I say, it puts me in a good mood)
Bush (Got to love some glossed up grunge any day of the week)
3EB (a borderline entry. Hard to admit to in some circles, but Slow Motion w/ lyrics is possibly the greatest song ever…ohya)

Theodor Herzl | 4/7/2007, 1:16 pm EST

Journey
Billy Joel
George Thorogood
Def Leppard
Panic! At the Disco

Mark JF | 4/7/2007, 12:39 pm EST

Dream Theater

Non e of these seriously warrant “cool” status today but - far more importantly - they’ve all got some seriously good music in their catalogue. What did the man say… “Listen Without Prejudice.”

eric | 4/7/2007, 12:35 pm EST

Here are some embarassments that i love:
Nelly
Panic! at the Disco
Marcy Playground
Afroman
Avril Lavigne
Bee Gees
Black Eyed Peas with Fergie
Bow Wow
BRITNEY SPEARS-shoot me in the head immediately
Eamon
ELO
Eddie Money
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Jewel
Kelly Clarkson
Lil’ Jon
NSync
Our Lady Peace
Papa Roach
Quiet Riot
Steppenwolf
Sum 41
Tatu
Tiffany
Tommy Tutone
Whitesnake
William Shatner - he made a CD with Ben Folds

Some peaople are listing that I don’t think deserve to be “guilty pleasures”:
Early Weezer
Early Green Day
whoever listed Bob Dylan is a complete idiot

Megan | 4/7/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Foreigner
Bon Jovi
A-Ha
Billy Idol
Guns N Roses
Blues Traveler
Boston
Dio (seriously though, he’s like the essence of rock)
Kiss
Motley Crue
ZZ Top

Axl Rose | 4/7/2007, 12:12 pm EST

Maritimer, it’s better not to say anything and let people wonder if you’re idiot than to say the Beach Boys are a guilty pleasure and announce your ignorance to the world.

Brian Wilson is one of the most important and influential (the beatles, Floyd, radiohead, U2, etc, etc, etc.) artists of the past fifty years. I very seriously doubt that Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney feel guilty about being inspired to create their finest work after hearing ‘Pet Sounds.’

You all know it has happened. That one song, about the candle, maybe a little wind, you teared up, and no amount of RAWK will save you now. So, Elton, Sir Elton if you know him -I don’t - but Elton should be on here along with cheesemeisters Meat Loaf and Jewel. And yes, I can admit it, one time back in 1987 I recorded over a metallica tape with . . . oh god help me - White Lion. But the most craptastic “white” monikered band, Whitesnake, is not on my list because I need room for REO Speedwagon. Can they even be touched in this category? SuperMullets, ballads, pianos, ubiquitous use of the word “baby” in several songs, more mullets, guilty guilty guilty. I suppose the pleasure part of the equation is discretionary.

WOW, what a list of posts…i’ve always wondered about the whole “guilty pleasure” syndrome. Was it a concept invented by HIPsters to describe the fact that sometimes music is good but not COOL enough to be actually considered “legit”. Why is America singing about “the Horse with no Name” (about that “kid who thinks he took acid”-RandyNewman) any less valid than Alex Chilton singing about “No Sex”…is the common denominator for G.P.’s the RADIO?
Music is everywhere, and I doubt it would work for most people to walk into Walgreens and hear “I wanna be your Dog” over the “in-store”, or a Slits set in an elevator.
Now, I don’t know for sure who chooses the FOREVER songs, they aren’t really “oldies” because they keep playing them, like “Sailing” and (my FAV) “Will a Little more LOVE Make it Right”:::OLIVIA!!!!!!!, but I think it might have something to do with perceived “normalcy”.
So crank up the Radio and enjoy those dweeby HITS that are NEVER EVER going away, but when you get home into your POD, try a little musical creativity.
Today’s Recommend?

Aha, Roxette, Jackson 5. Dean Martin!

cheesecrop | 4/7/2007, 7:53 am EST

I believe it is Rainbow who does the coolest song in the entire history of rock, that being “Man on the Silver Mountain”. This is the only song ever(and I mean EVER!) that I can actually create an entire mental music video around w/out ever actually seeing anything by them. It automatically marks them as the ultimate rock act in history. The Beatles and Dylan would kill to be able to create such awesome imagery as this song does.

Steel Dragon | 4/7/2007, 7:46 am EST

forgot to add A-ha, Tears for Fears, Bryan Adams, Spice Girls, INXS, Robbie Williams (he’s a terrific singer, with no respect in the US)

And last week on the rumors one,. I forgot to add how Michael Hutchence supposedly died of hanging himself why performing something sexual.

Adam | 4/7/2007, 7:19 am EST

Say what you want about Foreigner, but Lou Gramm is one HELL of a singer. That’s why I love Foreigner. And “Midnight Blue” is a great gem from the 80’s.

Lumpy | 4/7/2007, 6:51 am EST

Oooohhhh my, this brings back memories: I remember when Bush was constantly being attacked, about how they were cheap imitations of Nirvana…. but I have a different take on this…. bare with me:

Well, for one, I don’t think they sounded like Nirvana at all…. Nirvana was one of the greatest, most innovative rock bands of all time, with a disinct musical flavor that no one could copy, no matter how clever they were, while Bush was just a pop band with “grunge-like” decorations, and with little talent and with even less to say, besides, “I’m a machinehead / from green to red.” So much depth, huh? Gavin should have just been a model. I always thought all this was obvious, so I never really understood the whole copy-cat ordeal, apart from the fact that the industry people needed a “grungy” void to fill in the market. That I got.

Yeah, definitely, Bush is the guiltiest of pleasures. But, getting to my point: I was watching the video for “letting the cables sleep” the other day, and I had the strangest feeling that the pre-chorus of the song sounds EXACTLY like something from another song… and then I remembered: it sounded exactly like, get this, the pre-chorus part of George Michael’s “father figure”!!!! Isn’t that hideous?

So, all and all, Bush didn’t copy Nirvana ( it would’ve been too obvious, and they never would’ve gotten away with it legally ) they copied other bands/artists who seemed like unlikely ( and less risky ) targets at the time.

Anyone up for a Bush reunion??? :-)

Unholysmoke | 4/7/2007, 3:21 am EST

The Pet Shop Boys!

Every time I mention them I get funny looks, but great tunes, great attitude. More rock and roll than people like the ‘phonics. Mock me if you will, but I stand firm.

david c | 4/7/2007, 3:20 am EST

I left out Talk Talk. They didn’t receive much negative attention, but then they never got much attention period. Great band, they just got overlooked.

Spaceman | 4/7/2007, 3:17 am EST

Neil Diamond? David Sylvian? Come on they dont belong here at all! Worse than everything else is stuff like
JOURNEY
AMERICA
THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT
BARCLEY JAMES HARVEST
ROD STEWART
ASIA
CHRIS DE BURGH
- bands that were shite in the 70ies and now celebrate themselves as “CLASSIC ROCK” - Fuck that term!

At least theres one GOOD THING about them - you can get vintage vinyl-pressings of their albums at low prices. If you’d like to turn your record collection into a CHAMBER OF HORRORS!

Elton John , Madonna , Bread , Maroon 5 , George Michael

matt | 4/7/2007, 2:35 am EST

Journey is a good pick, although “Lights” and the “Na Na Na Na Na” song are the only 2 good songs–everything else by them is awful.

Boston is another 70’s corporate rock band that I feel a little guilty for liking, although they’re much, much better than Kansas/Styx/Journey so I don’t feel too guilty. But when I was reading a bio. of Joe Strummer and he kept bashing on Boston in every single interview, it did make me feel guilty for liking them. ;-)

Will | 4/7/2007, 2:32 am EST

311 is the correct answer to the question.

Kevin Dubrow | 4/7/2007, 2:28 am EST

People relax, I have the list right here.
1) Billy Joel when he had hair
2) Reo Speedwagon’s first 3 albums, can’t justify the hi-fidelity era
3) Billy Squier - he has more than 5 hits - it’s true, I won a bar bet - it’s around 6.5.
4) Young M.C.’s “bust a move” ok, 1 hit wonders are not the topic but damn smarty go to a party
5) bon jovi

david c | 4/7/2007, 2:00 am EST

I like some of the “Art Rock” bands that never seem to get much credit or respect from the critics, and some of my friends for that matter.

Moody Blues (early years)
Yes
Genesis (Gabriel years)
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
David Sylvian
Kate Bush

Too artsy fartsy for some I suppose, but I rather like them.

rolling joint | 4/7/2007, 1:55 am EST

rolling stone use to be a great pleasure now its a left wing political whos who of bush bashing and anti american trickery. Only the young and unwise would actually pick up a copy and pay for it . shit they even hired huey lewis’s son to work for the establishment now that takes some balls. lol

KURGAN | 4/7/2007, 1:08 am EST

I agree with Steel Dragon. Who doesn’t feel a little ashamed to rock out to Poison, Twisted Sister, Ratt, Cinderella, Journey, Warrant, and Dokken? But I’ve seen all but TS live, and they still kick it onstage!!!!!

marnr67 | 4/7/2007, 1:03 am EST

Kelly Clarkson, Yes, Boston, Gretchen Wilson, Iced Earth, Dave Matthews Band, Iron Maiden, Blind Faith… cuz admit it Blind Faith does suck… but they suck awesomely. Kiss is pretty cool i dig them. I like two songs by Limp Bizkit their cover of george michael’s “faith” and “breaking stuff”.

But i fuckin hate journey
theres nothing that will ever make me enjoy journey
to hell with that crap

again with Bush..fuckin hate them too.

Monsieur | 4/7/2007, 12:52 am EST

Hole, the Vines, KISS

scott | 4/7/2007, 12:33 am EST

Rush, hands down. Non-fans associate Rush with “Tom Sawyer” and, without knowing what the song actually means, pass them off as a novelty band. Kimonos and leotards and songs called “By-Tor and the Snow Dog” are definitely “uncool” but they are three of the greatest musicians of all time, and Peart is a highly underrated lyricist. They’re probably a guilty pleasure to people who will randomly break into the drum fills at the end of “Tom Sawyer” but they have one hell of a lot of passionate fans (see the Rush In Rio DVD, where 100,000 Brazillians SING along to “YYZ,” an instrumental).

I hate to admit, but Loverboy can kick some ass!

Why is there a big bold picture of Journey’s Trademark emblem in this weeks pole? Lack of quality or coolness, but still manage to rock, or at least inspire serious if shameful adoration on a mass scale? What the f*#k? Journey is more of a band then the 15 minutes of fame bands Rollingstone continuously puts on the front of their recent magazines. RollingStone magaizine is the biggest thing to “sellout” since The Black Album, and I don’t mean Jay-Z, even though he is a sellout.
