Springsteen Toasts . . . Himself (with Help from Patti Smith, the Hold Steady and more)

4/6/07, 3:40 pm EST

bruce springsteenTowards the end of last night’s Bruce Springsteen tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, seventy-seven-year-old folk legend Odetta was wheeled onstage, only to launch into Bruce Springsteen’s single worst song ever: “57 Channels (And Nothin’ On).” Accompanied only by a piano player she delivered a rendition that was part spoken-word and part Woody Guthrie talking blues. It was hypnotic. Immediately afterwards, Brooklyn indie rockers the Hold Steady took the stage and played the most joyous version of “Atlantic City” I’ve ever seen. Dancing around like Talking Heads-era David Byrne on speed, frontman Craig Finn delivered the sorrowful tale of a desperate man like it was “Joy to the World.” If not for the show’s finale, it would have been the greatest performance of the night.

The show — a benefit concert for the children’s charity Music For Youth — began with Steve Earle’s stark solo acoustic take on the title track from Nebraska. Soon after, last-minute addition Patti Smith (who replaced Jewel on the evening’s all-star bill) sang a stripped-down “Because the Night” accompanied only by a pianist. “This song has followed me through my days,” an emotional Smith said of the tune she co-wrote with Bruce in 1978. “At times it’s even rescued me.” Other highlights included the Elysian Field’s slowed-down, sensual version of “Streets of Fire,” Marah’s amped up take on “The Rising” and Badly Drawn Boy a.k.a. Damon Gough’s ebullient run-through of “Thunder Road.” The Jersey Guys (an elderly vocal group featuring Frankie Valli’s brother Bobby) did a doo-wop “Jersey Girl.” It was unclear whether or not they realized it was actually a Tom Waits song.
After the Hold Steady finished, there was an odd moment of stillness on the stage. And then the evening’s announcer said, “What if I were a genie in the bottle and could grant you one wish?” Everybody the hall jumped to their feet and yelled “BRUUUUUCE,” as the man of the evening (unbilled but widely rumored to appear) ran on stage with an acoustic guitar and harmonica rack. He gave a brief speech about how he felt like a ghost hovering above his own funeral all night before playing a slowed-down version of “The Promised Land,” followed by a rare solo acoustic “Rosalita.” He paused in the middle to give an update on the song’s protagonist — who in later years “broke up the band and wrote happy songs that nobody liked.” He then called all the night’s performers back onstage for a full-band rendition of “Rosalita.” Finn, Gough and Jesse Malin all took verses as Bruce played guitar, sang harmony and grinned from ear to ear.

In Light & Love

It’s not the conflict that matters it’s changing it and making peace with it that matters.

Andy Greene 57 channels came from when I was given a warning for disturbing the peace with Bruce’s music because when there was nothing on TV after the 10:00pm. I was told of this 10:00pm law in Mrstn, NJ in 1990. 57 Channels is a good song to warn people of this sound law not just in Mrstn. NJ. This law should be enforced everywhere including Las Vegas.

I noticed blood brother’s & sister’s why wasn’t I invited since I have been a great love & inspiration since Glory Days was written. Rosie is now one of Bruce’s names for me. I was the one that told him to write Leah for me. I’m Gloria too don’t you remember the triva question at Rollingstone.com Johnny? Tom if Bruce is God than I’m the reincarnated Mary. Who knows maybe God is a she. Ha Ha!

Thunder Road is the greatest song ever written, ever Bruce fan I talk to have different interpretations of the song but all agree on how inspirational it is…

I will in fact……….see Bruce live and in concert at least ONCE in my lifetime.
I have admired this man since Born In The USA……mmm
He is such a magnificant musician who in my opinion is an AMERICAN ICON IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
He should tour the USA just see how much he is REALLY loved here!!
I know for a fact that he could sell out the newly built FORD Center in OKC tenfold……..And I would be right there everynight!

SUCH WONDERFUL MUSIC WITH MEANING AND PURPOSE for everyone to enjoy.

If anyone knows when/how/where I could see him and the E-Steet live…, please announce it!

I dream of the day Bruce and Patti sing together. She is also a grear rocker who always speaks her mind.

Johnny "City" | 4/9/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Yeah, the night was just about perfect.
Thought it was actually quite a stellar line-up,
and it seemed like there was actually some creativity and thought put into it for a change.
How tedious if could have been with a bunch of gold record having, glossy hollywood types, the farthest thing from what Bruce is about, any way. The program said something about these artists that were all original writers in their own rights. Freakin’ Patti Smith was there! And we didn’t have to cringe thru Jewel luckily.
Elysian Fields’ “Streets of Fire” blew my head off, and have since started looking into their work. When Bruce sang “Rosalita” with the whole ensemble, man you wanted to weep for joy, his humour and generosity and history came pouring though. His music has shaped so much of my life.

Bruce DID write Pony Boy—there is another unrelated traditional version.

Jordan | 4/9/2007, 8:53 am EST

RocnRobert | 4/8/2007, 4:15 pm EST

I’ve seen the future of rock and roll…and his name is…
BADLY DRAWN BOY!!

Leah | 4/8/2007, 12:55 pm EST

The song “Born To Run “inspires me I happen to Love all of Mr. Springsteen’s Songs

KCV | 4/8/2007, 12:36 pm EST

sorry i misspelled learned there oops….bruce is one inspiring dude.

KCV | 4/8/2007, 12:36 pm EST

bruce started to inspire me in 1984 when i heard his song ‘NO SURRENDER’-it had a line that summed up everything for me: ‘WE LEARNED MORE FROM A 3-MINUTE RECORD BABY THAN WE EVER LEARENED IN SCHOOL’-that says it all for me. He’s due to make a rock and roll lp wouldn’t you say?

Tom | 4/7/2007, 5:52 pm EST

I think the lineup was great. You are here to honor a man’s body of work, you don’t want a lot of big name artists who will overshadow the event. Sean said the night was perfect, it sounds like it from all accounts I’ve read. Another thought, the reason you take lesser known artists like this, is because these are the people who’s music has been shaped by their years of listening to Bruce. Now to lose any shread of impartiality I may have displayed up to this point, I do have to add that Bruce IS god.

War | 4/7/2007, 2:06 pm EST

Bruce Springsteen is incredible

dear janey | 4/7/2007, 1:33 am EST

why are dumb internet people like yourself so quick to criticize? you know nothing, you are nothing.

janey | 4/6/2007, 10:48 pm EST

i am impressed - you readily came up with some alternatives likely more deserving of the acknowledgement. ; ) guess i lobbed that “those of us who know his work” dig at you a little too readily. : )

lik roper | 4/6/2007, 10:03 pm EST

baby we were born to run…

fitzbath | 4/6/2007, 8:32 pm EST

Pony Boy is Springsteen’s worst song…. that’s good to know… because he didnt write it…. it’s a traditional folk song….duh!!!!

FFDan | 4/6/2007, 6:45 pm EST

His worst wong is Pony Boy, followed by Bobby Jean…

Andy Greene | 4/6/2007, 5:57 pm EST

Thanks for the correction. “Let’s Be Friends” or “The Angel” are right up there too, but “57 Channels” has always been my least favorite.

janey | 4/6/2007, 5:44 pm EST

for the record, mr. greene, the song title is “57 channels (and nothin’ on)”, and it is hardly bruce’s “worst song ever”. while i appreciate your effort to set the stage for lofty appraisal of odetta’s rendition, please refrain from such unilateral and misguided assertions in the future - it undermines your credibility with those of us who know bruce and his work quite extensively.

bared | 4/6/2007, 5:43 pm EST

i agree w/ peepers. not bad artists, but not many big names for an event like this

sean | 4/6/2007, 5:23 pm EST

the night was perfect.

Mr. Peepers | 4/6/2007, 5:15 pm EST

Couldn’t they get a better line-up for something like this?
