Lunchtime Poll: Save “Sgt. Pepper’s” From Razorlight

4/6/07, 11:38 am EST

Sgt Pepper's

The NME is reporting that a collection of worthy (Oasis, the Killers, the Fratellis) and not so worthy (Razorlight, Travis) bands are covering a collection of songs off Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the album’s release (it came out June 1st, 1967). We can already hear the maudlin wail of Travis butchering “Lucy in the Sky” and we feel something must be done. You are in charge of this project. You get to pick any band currently together and actively playing to join your team and take to the task of not fucking up cover versions of these classic tunes. What bands do you select and which songs do they play?

i think travis is pretty fucking awesome

Sean | 4/6/2007, 12:01 pm EST

None. Why the hell would anyone think that this is a good idea? Yeah, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (or whatever), but give me a break. We’re talking about the greatest album ever recorded. Basically, that means that nobody could do it but the Beatles. So maybe nobody should do it… but the Beatles. God this is gonna suck… and then when it comes out, all the tracks will be all over itunes and all the high school girls will be like omggggg I looove Oasis!! Hey Sean, have you heard that song Getting Better by Oasis? It’s my favvvv!!! Makes me sick…

jandek | 4/6/2007, 12:17 pm EST

sick of the cock worshipping of the beatles and classic rock…move on…to new music people

www.myspace.com/waynewhittaker | 4/6/2007, 12:37 pm EST

well…the Beatles are a lot better than any NEW music, but I would say Wilco covering A Day in the Life would be awesome.

John | 4/6/2007, 12:43 pm EST

umphreys mcgee doing a day in the life

new music sucks, beatles were the best pop song writers of all time

Jay | 4/6/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Jandek, get bent. My advice would be to ask all artists to stop participating in these tribute albums. Has anyone ever bought one? Ayway, Radiohead doing Within You Witout you would be nice.

myspace.com/15keys | 4/6/2007, 12:53 pm EST

Hey jandek if it weren’t for the Beatles none of the bands you listen to would even exist. Whether you like it or not the Beatles influenced people in how they dressed, what they listened to, how to look at things in different ways. Do you think yoga or any other influences from the Far East would have taken off if not for The Beatles? What do musicians influence you do to now besides wear black eyeliner or godforbid you like hiphop they show you how to drink Crystale and slap bitches around. Pathetic!

LateNightRadio | 4/6/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Why exactly are The Killers more worthy than Travis?!

None the less, I think there are more than enough Beatles covers in the world already.

Joseph A | 4/6/2007, 12:55 pm EST

Tribute albums are awful. I’ve never liked a single cover song by anyone more than the original, hence I’ve never bought or will by anything so clearly driven by the mighty dollar.

Wanker | 4/6/2007, 1:06 pm EST

Why is Travis not so worthy?

Morgan | 4/6/2007, 1:08 pm EST

I agree- Tribute albums almost always suck. And jandek- you’re a fool. Anybody that really appreciated good music as a whole would NEVER make that statement. Street lights are on-

Copeland-She’s Leaving Home & The Rocket Summer-Getting Better

seaofholes | 4/6/2007, 1:33 pm EST

1) Sgt. Pepper’s – Oasis (Noel singing)
2) With a Little Help From My Friend’s – Oasis (Liam singing)
3) Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – Rufus Wainwright
4) Getting Better – Sloan
5) Fixing a Hole – Blur (w/ Graham back)
6) She’s Leaving Home – Elvis Costello
7) Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! – Joel Streeter
8) Within You Without You – Sufjan Stevens
9) When I’m Sixty-Four – Badly Drawn Boy
10) Lovely Rita – Wilco
11) Good Morning Good Morning – The Strokes
12) Sgt. Pepper (reprise) – Oasis
13) A Day in the Life – Radiohead

Scott P | 4/6/2007, 1:34 pm EST

Well, since this is the most overrated album of all time, I would have no problem with having Sanjaya “singing” the entire thing from beginning to end. No loss there. Now if you were talking about Rubber Soul or Abbey Road, that would be a different story.

Spencer | 4/6/2007, 1:36 pm EST

how the hell are travis not worthy?

Katie | 4/6/2007, 2:08 pm EST

i’d say that the foo fighters and radio head spilting the album would be awesome…im thinking like the foo’s on a day in the life, and with a little help from my friends and radiohead on within you without you

Jay | 4/6/2007, 2:13 pm EST

Nice call Katie. I might buy the album you are putting together!

joel | 4/6/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – The Flaming Lips

barmpp | 4/6/2007, 4:02 pm EST

The Beatles made music what it is. Many bands of today have been influenced by the Beatles in some way or another. No one should ever dis the Beatles. Whoever does needs a kick in the teeth.

Neil | 4/6/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Why not Oasis? They have always thought they were the Beatles anyway.

jandek | 4/6/2007, 5:01 pm EST

I rather listen to nick drake, sigur ros, godspeed you black emperor, and django reinhardt for the rest of my life than hear another beatles song. and musically they are all better than the beatles

Jim | 4/6/2007, 5:20 pm EST

Seaofholes!!! Nice job!!!
I’ll second your list, except I’ll put Neil Finn on “Mr. Kite”

jandek | 4/6/2007, 5:23 pm EST

I also add glenn branca, my bloody valentine, and new order/joy divison to that list. also stones are more note worthy to listen to than the beatles.

ps early beatles music is pure childish rubbish. wanna hold my hand makes aint no other man by whorealgeria look like a masterpiece

Jim | 4/6/2007, 5:43 pm EST

The one | 4/6/2007, 6:39 pm EST

White stripes !Jack can do any thing … A little wilco ….maybe some beck

Sean | 4/6/2007, 7:49 pm EST

Jandek, I’m sorry, but you’re an idiot. Maybe people still worship the Beatles because nobody has been able to top them. Ask any of the bands you listed, and I would gaurantee that they say the Beatles are an influence not only to them, but to pretty much everything that has happened since the 1960’s. Radiohead happens to by one of my favorite bands, but I don’t think they should put their name on a Beatles cover album, and I don’t think they will. I have a feeling they know when and when not to tamper with good music. It’s one thing to cover a song in a concert or something- that’s fine. But a whole album doesn’t prove anything. Especially when it’s Sgt. Pepper’s.

Emily | 4/6/2007, 11:30 pm EST

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds- Modest Mouse

cheesecrop | 4/7/2007, 8:33 am EST

I’ve always felt the Beatles were slightly overrated. That being said, much of this is due to Pepper, which is vastly overrated. As Scott p said below if it were anything but this one maybe I’d think twice, but not here. The problem is Pepper was supposed to be a concept album but threw the script out immediatly. What really needs to be done, though you’ll never see it, is to let a bunch of modern acts come in and rewrite this mess of an album so that it at least approximates what it was supposed to be in the first place! Somebody drag Billy Shears up off his lame ass and let’s see where this thing can be taken.

jandek | 4/7/2007, 4:41 pm EST

sean you must be a fool cause django reinhardt was definitely before the beatles. I also would add blind willie mctell also before the beatles. ask any of the bands/artist I mentition and the beatles would not come up at all. Hence why I like them. haha. Doesnt mean they never listen to them…..just try to do things differently instead of repeating oneself. Which would make ayn rand proud.

thomas | 4/9/2007, 3:06 am EST

normally remakes shouldn’t be done..but when I hear Sonic Youth’s remake of the Carpenter’s “Superstar” there are the rare times the remake outshines the original.

Mike | 4/9/2007, 10:19 am EST

Dr. Dog should do a song since they sound a lot like them! Maybe Mr. Kite.

Mike | 4/9/2007, 10:22 am EST

Oh yeah, and those of you who think the Beatles are overrated and that we should be talking about ‘real’ music, please shut up asap. Everyone already knows how cool you are, so just don’t bother posting here.

jandek | 4/9/2007, 12:21 pm EST

not trying to be cool…just dont want to hear the same hero worship for the rest of my life. feel its time for people to move on…try something new. listen to something different. I mean seriously there is plenty of OTHER music besides the beatles to listen to and talk about.

Space Pen | 4/9/2007, 4:27 pm EST

ok oasis blow and they shouldnt do it…the killers, u2 and mika should take over…YEAH I SAID MIKA!

Radio | 4/9/2007, 4:36 pm EST

It’s funny people say that remakes are terrible. How about “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix or “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles? I think alot of people don’t even know they are remakes.

J-Rock | 4/10/2007, 9:14 am EST

The Polyphonic Spree would do an outstanding cover of “Getting Better” and I’d love to hear a Decemberists version of “A Day in the Life”. I think the opening “With a Little Help/Sgt. Pepper’s” could be set off by Gomez. Those would be 3 great ones.

J-Rock | 4/10/2007, 9:17 am EST

Oh and the person who called “Lucy” by the Flaming Lips… right on there

And obviously Oasis could pull off msot of those songs… as the Beatles are clearly their biggest influence. Too bad the Stone Roses aren’t together anymore… they’d do a wicked job and any of those.

Hunter | 4/10/2007, 3:00 pm EST

Pearl Jam – Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band; Within you without you

Radiohead – LSD; A Day in the Life

Martin | 4/10/2007, 3:50 pm EST

“sick of the cock worshipping of the beatles and classic rock…move on…to new music people”.

1) All new music (regardless of genre) is re-tooled old stuff.
2) All musicians/artists have been influenced by predecessors at some stage – musicians do not live or create in a vacuum.
3)All musicians emulate/copy/ripoff/pay homage to others.

Derek | 4/10/2007, 6:49 pm EST

Cat Power- A Day in the Life
The White Stripes- Sgt. Pepper’s
Thom Yorke- Within you and Without you
Will Oldham-A little help from my friends
Danger Mouse- Mr. Kite
Nas- Lovely Rita

Derek | 4/10/2007, 6:50 pm EST

The Fall- When I’m 64

aha | 4/10/2007, 7:32 pm EST

Leave this alone why mess with what was done right to start with. Jandek does not deserve a response, so I won’t. For Joesph A, I think even Dylan considers Jimi Hendrix’s version of All along the watchtower to be the best version done. Blinded by the light by Manfred Mann over Springsteen. Just a couple come to mind.

the maninabluehouse | 4/10/2007, 8:03 pm EST

let them butcher the album, know wonder frank zappa made fun of sgt pepper.stupid hippie album

the maninabluehouse | 4/10/2007, 8:04 pm EST

i wouldn’t put sgt pepper on a pedestal or anything, it’s not that great

sgtpepper | 4/10/2007, 11:23 pm EST

I listen to a variety of music, both new and old but the beatles were amazing and sgt. pepper’s is a classic. I like the suggestions of having the flaming lips cover lucy and the white stripes doing sgt. pepper’s that would be great.

jacket | 4/10/2007, 11:55 pm EST

you may not like the beatles, nothing wrong with that, but overrated common’. i’m not a huge beatles fan myself but there is denying the fact that The beatles influenced an entire generation, not just musically but culturally. Three hundred years from now john lennon will be class in the same class as william shakespeare and mozart.

emo kid | 4/11/2007, 12:01 am EST

fall out boy and panic!at the disco are the only band that comes close to the greatness of the beatles.
Im gonna go cut myself with my comforting blade.

sgtpepper | 4/11/2007, 3:01 am EST

fallout boy and panic are horrible

jandek | 4/11/2007, 12:28 pm EST

in ways martin yes I do agree…but what Im saying and been getting misquote on is that Im sick of people just solely talking about classic rock bands and the beatles. I never once said I never listen to them. I have. I just rather listen and talk about something else. I mean its been 40 years since that album has been released. There has been plenty of great music people havent heard cause they are tied up on this. and of course Ill hear the blacklash well blah blah it must be that good if people are talking about it 40 years later. Not the point Im arguing. Im saying open your ears and explore different music.

cheesecrop | 4/11/2007, 8:12 pm EST

Jandek is right when he says that people should open up their minds to new stuff. Time has moved on. The post suggests that certain acts aren’t worthy of being on a cover album for Pepper. If these songs are so timeless then they should be able to withstand a thrashing over by just about anyone and still come out o.k. It’s sad how rock fans have become so frightened about anybody differing from a common point of view. It’s no longer classic rock but sheep rock which we all flock to. As for the people who suggest that musicians are influenced by the past, I do agree. I hear all sorts of classical influence on Pepper. Does that mean I’m actually listening to a great classical tribute album by a bunch of above average Brits? “Sgt. Mozarts Royal Court Composition Band”, anyone? If so, then rock me Amadeus, indeed.

Ryan | 4/12/2007, 3:03 am EST

im lovin’ the idea of Radiohead doing a Day in the Life. That would be insane.

Jame | 4/12/2007, 9:04 am EST

It’s hard to picture anyone covering the Beatles. No band today really comes in mind that would really do a great job. It would be an interesting album to hear though, no matter who contributed.

Jame | 4/12/2007, 9:09 am EST

A blues type album with guys like Buddy Guy and some Clapton wouldn’t be bad. It would sound a lot different but it would be interesting to see their spin on the album.

Larry | 4/12/2007, 3:17 pm EST

I’ll just stick with the only cover album needed – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band soundtrack. Rent the DVD! It’s a horrible guilty pleasure. But it’s still pleasures me. I saw the movie when I was a kid. I still watch my DVD of it. Steve Martin as Maxwell Hammer is the best cover of that song you will ever hear!

Leviticus | 4/16/2007, 12:33 pm EST

When I’m Sixty-Four – Franz Ferdinand

“Fade Together” could practically be a Beatle’s song.
