Lunchtime Poll: Greenlight The Rockumentary

4/5/07, 11:44 am EST

Green Day

The late 90s LA punk scene is the latest to earn documentary treatment. Tony Hawk is reportedly going to narrate a forthcoming film that looks at punk in the 90s and features contributions/appearances by Green Day, Bad Religion, and (those stalwarts of classic punk rock ethos) Blink 182. You are in charge of approving any and all rock documentaries made in the future. What scene do you determine has yet to enjoy its moment in the rock documentary sun? Who do you greenlight to make the picture? And what bands do they interview?

well, the obvious one is college rock: rem, the replacements, husker du, 10,000 maniacs, camper van beethoven, and the black crowes.

narrated by uma thurman.

It’s not a documentary, but I like

Minneapolmusic: The Musical

A look at the music scene in MPLS in the 80s, incorporating all the divergent genres in town at that time: Husker Du, Replacements, Trip Shakespeare, Babes in Toyland, and Prince.

It takes place in First Avenue’s old bar area in front of the stage, during a sparcely populated dance night. Westerberg, Prince, and all are sitting at the bar…and Dylan is the bartender. It breaks open like a Richard Linklater film, all real time, filled with conversation and song.

I’ll go with a rockumentary based on the current scene in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. It will show bands like Wolvaire, Sweet Lee Morrow, Jefferson Colby, and Twilight as they starve, wither, and ultimately suffocate from the deluge of nu-metal and jock-rock that owns the scene.

It will be a rip-off of a Christian Children’s Fund commercial, directed by Steven Spielburg.

Narrated by that same accusatory/angry Santa Claus from all the CCF adverts. “Maybe you didn’t save these bands because you were too busy to check them out. You tell yourself, ‘One day, when my iPod runs dry, or when Arcade Fire breaks up, I’ll help the struggling DFW bands.’ Well, tomorrow may be too late.”

Hi Poll Girl! I’ve missed my future wife these past few days. Ok- This premise to this question could go about a million different ways. How about a documentary about lip syncing pop idols; their rise to the highest of highs to the lowest of lows as they ride the public opionion rollercoaster- “when we love you, we REALLY love you, and when we don’t, you SUCK.” This could feature any number of pop singers-dancers-don’t play instruments pop stars from the past ten or plus years and should be dually narrated by the other other living guy from Milli Vanilli (was it Fab or Rob, I can’t remember) and, of course, Ashlee Simpson, who could certainly narrate the segment about her carrer. Sweet

Phil Spector’s wall of sound would be nice

There is a documentary currently in production about the Canadian independent music explosion (Aiming for a late 2007/early 2008 release). Amongst musicians involved: Wolf Parade, Buck 65, Peaches, Malajube, Sloan, the New Pornographers, and more. It’s about the struggle to make music that is more grassroots and non-commercial than most, but gaining loyalty among fans based on the fact that the bands aren’t in it for the money, there’s everything from illegal downloading to Canada’s great funding system. You can see who’s in it at http://www.thejourneystartshere.ca (working title).

The sheogazer movement would befit a rettospective. The doc anonymous mentioned about the Canadian scene looks promising. Maybe a history of SST records would be a winner; their roster was outstanding.

Spaceboy | 4/5/2007, 6:12 pm EST

How about 80’s new wave? interviews of Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talking Heads, and more i cant think of right now

Arthur Corningwaddle | 4/5/2007, 6:13 pm EST

It would be nice to see a southern rock documentary. You know, like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Duane Allman and ZZ Top. That would be pretty sweet. Be nice to see some one honoring them fo the musical geniuses they were.

Helvis | 4/6/2007, 9:36 am EST

Green Day, Blink 182? They are so influenced by the great punk rock trio, Agent Orange, that they should be interviewed by Agent Orange for this movie(narrated by Chuck Bukowski!).

twodopeboys | 4/6/2007, 11:56 am EST

the local de, pa, nj music scene explosion? hmmmmm, sounds interesting. you know what, why not, lets do the damn thing. lets make a doc on that. yeah sure, ill lend u the money for it…but if its not successful and you cant pay me back i take a pound of your flesh, son…and all of your drugs (not including tropical frogs of any sort)

farrah | 4/6/2007, 2:06 pm EST

let’s not.

Katie | 4/6/2007, 2:19 pm EST

first and foremost: green day is not punk in the slightest bit. punk is about rebellion, anarchy and pissing people off. And what does green day do? they write cheesy, overplayed sugary radio friendly tripe that has absolutely no meaning like Wake me Up When Spetember Ends. They tried to add a little social commentary to that song…it is after all about someone going to the iraq war. However, the message is lost in it’s meaningless video in which an unemployed boy traipes around town with his equally unemployed girlfriend. And lest i forget, they play Xbox.

Anf although im sure there is several, i think they should make more documentaries about the psychadellic rock of the 60’s and 70’s. They could interview the remaining doors, led zeppelin members and pink floyd. yeah, i’d watch that. and they could call it something like “through the haze: an in depth lok at psychadellic rock.

cheesecrop | 4/7/2007, 8:10 am EST

No more psychedelic geezer crap! There’s so much out there already it’s impossible to miss. I guess the punk doc is o.k., but why do they have to get Tony Hawk to do this? You couldn’t find anyone else?

It’s not a rock doc in essence, but it’d be nice to see one on country music’s dissapearance from the rock world at the end of the 50’s through the entire 60’s decade.

charliemapleton | 4/9/2007, 1:39 pm EST

Banana, you do not know what you’re missin’.Twodopeboys,I appreciate the cred and supporting the movement, but in exchange for drugs and flesh(puzzled at that)?Iiiii seriously don’t think so.Success, women, and cereal are my antidrugs at that. But I can give you a little sample of what’s going down in counterparts of Willtown,Philtown, and Illtown:

charliemapleton | 4/9/2007, 1:43 pm EST

And with the connections i’ve got-specifically my music mag Triczine and the good folks of Community Corporations Corporation(TV production company)in the DE-i’m sure it would be ultra successful.

Brett | 4/10/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Rockumentary on those lads in Spinal Tap. It would be hilarious.

charliemapleton | 4/12/2007, 4:30 pm EST

You know,I almost forgot:The go-go music scene, notoriously located in the heart of the Nation’s Capital.

For those that don’t know,go-go-not to be confused with the go-go pop-rock movement of the ’60’s-is just powerful, pulsating, party flavored r&b/funk music mostly played on congas, cowbells, and buckets. The songs consist of the bands’ popular songs and often times illustrious renditions of r&b and hip hop artists tracks.Even though it hasn’t been nationally popular(not hardly,in which i’ll get to in a minute),it’s been a sensation by appealing and attracting many listeners around the DC/MD/VA area(me being a former resident of that tri state area,I was fortunate enough to witness it). Some bands responsible for the movement include Northeast Groovers(overall, and especially in my case, the BEST band ever),Backyard Band,Junkyard Band,& last but not least, the “Godfather Of Go-Go”,Mr. Chuck Brown.

For the same people who may not quite be familiar with some songs, here’s a track list, especially from the national level:

Northeast Groovers-”The Water”,”Booty Call”,”20 Minute Workout”

Chuck Brown-”Cat In The Hat”,”Bustin’ Loose Pts. 1&2″(the original popular nationwide hits)”Misty”,”Your Game”

E.U.(also responsible for the movement and giving it brief national success)-”Da Butt”,”Shake Your Thang”(feat. Salt ‘N’ Pepa)

To be continued…
