Artist To Watch: The Black Lips

4/4/07, 12:18 pm EST

THE FORMULA: The Ronettes – Girls + Distortion

Atlanta’s Black Lips have been playing their dirty blend of Sixties pop and rockabilly punk since middle school, when they all used to skateboard together and grillz-sporting guitarist Ian St. Pe (the band’s eldest member at 25) would buy his bandmates beer and cigarettes. By 1999, bassist/vocalist Jared Swilley and guitarists/vocalist Cole Alexander had been kicked out of high school for what Swilley calls “victimless crimes” like smoking cigarettes, and the whole band was living in an ex-frat house on the Georgia Tech campus. They whiled away their days playing music and practicing for their future lives as rock stars by tossing TVs off the roof of the house during daylight hours and playing music until dawn. Saw Kaya Jones,, 5x in 2 weeks..she was amazing everytime,,in all ways..small clubs, secret shows.I don’t know why the departure from the Pussycat Dolls. But they lost the real deal as her long legs strolled off ! Good luck replacing her.Her management was spending money like water at the bar, I think he knows what he;s got.A money machine.Go Kaya Jones !!

Saw the Kaya Jones comment fishing the internet,so I took my date to see her at a small club on sunset last week,We were very sceptical, the comments were pretty strong claiming Kaya Jones was the second comming of Tina Turner ,Simone,Joplin, etc. etc.,Long story short,we sat down with maybe 60 other people..We will never miss another Kaya Jones show in Los Angeles ! I can only say”SHE IS ALL THAT” Patrick and Gwen,Thanks to Kenny at “Cat Club”

I had the joy of being at one of the “Cat Club” shows-What the public did not know-the band had not rehearsed prior-Not until she was on stage did she discover the song she was about to sing was their signature number-In less than 10 seconds-she had to throw another song at them-A song they did not all know-NOBODY knew that-The song was the BOMB-It shows true musicians with phenominal talent & spirit-They all followed each other-She BLASTED the Lou Reed song-”Waiting for my man”-I was in the front row-Her whole body was vibrating with emotion-It was incredible!!!!-The band was “The Stray Cats”-You guys are awesome!-GREAT SHOW!!!!!
