Black Sabbath Bring the Rock at Radio City

4/2/07, 3:51 pm EST

Minutes before the Ronnie James Dio-fronted iteration of Black Sabbath hit the stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Friday, an announcement came over the PA. “Tickets are on sale now for Dora The Explorer and Thomas The Tank Engine,” the friendly female voice boomed. It went on to say something about Harry Connick, Jr. but the crowd of aging metal-heads wasn’t having it — particularly the guy in front of me wearing the “It Isn’t Going To Suck Itself” t-shirt. “SAAAABAAAAATH!” came the pained yells. One forty-something fan held his cane high in the air, as if asking for Dio to heal him. His other hand was clenched into the Dio-patented devil sign: “DIIIIIOOOOO!” When the band finally burst onto the stage — which was decorated to look like an abandoned grave yard — and burst into the 1992 obscurity “After All (the Dead),” it was as if Ozzy-era Sabbath had never happened.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: Black Sabbath made better albums with Ozzy Osbourne. They’ll never touch Master of Reality or Paranoid. That said, the Dio era is vastly underappreciated. Heaven and Hell was better than anything Sabbath had done since the early 1970s and Dio was an amazing front man who brought a completely different kind of energy to the band. Furthermore, as even Tony Iommi admitted on VH1 the other day, the Ozzy-era songs have been “played to death” since the group reformed ten years ago. How many times can you do the same eleven songs? This was a reunion whose time had come and (dare I say it?) was a better show than the last time I saw Sabbath with Ozzy.

The set list was drawn entirely from the three Dio-helmed albums, plus a couple new songs from the forthcoming Dio Years compilation. The guy behind me was pissed they didn’t play “N.I.B. and shit,” but nobody else seemed to mind. Highlight included a frenzied “Die Young,” a show closing “Neon Knights” and an extra long version of their epic masterpiece “Heaven and Hell” – perhaps the greatest Sabbath song of any era.

At sixty-four, Dio looks something like what I imagine the Crypt Keeper to have looked like shortly before he died, but his voice is still extraordinarily strong. Tony Iommi, on the other hand, is absolutely ageless. The only current bandmember who’s been in every incarnation of Sabbath, Iommi — clad in his standard immaculate black suit with a gigantic cross around his neck — spent the night stalking the right-hand side of the stage, looking and playing like he just stepped out of 1974.

After the final encore, the crowd spilled onto the street, still loudly singing the refrain of “Heaven and Hell” as they walked down 6th Avenue. I’ve never seen anything like it - and neither had the late-night businessmen who looked on in utter disbelief as if we were an invading hoard bent on taking over the city.

To the Mullet Man -Clearwater-Debate.WOW.How do you guys use the KeyPad wearing a STRAIGHTJACKET?

Harv750 | 4/6/2007, 2:10 am EST

The show at Radio city was killer. Between the great accoustics at RC & the high tech equipment the show was the most powerful rock perfromance yet. I was still buzzing Saturday night.

k-bones(a7xrox) | 4/5/2007, 12:59 am EST

sabbath is Wayyy better off with ozzy, after he left dio just piggy backed on sabbaths fame he was milking a dead cow.(epcept tony iommi he still kicks major ass) dio cant even compare with all the hits that sabbath had with ozzy!and never will.

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/4/2007, 11:08 pm EST

forgive me, in my haste to refute the Mullet man’s incomparable portrayal of his ability to debate, I puked out another grammatical mistake. As any good editor would I will acknowledge and correct. It should read, “…one more thing,” and “I’m off to the witch…”. But let’s not part ways on a sour note, one more for the road….”Do you ever think about the way I caught the Rainbow?….I’ll be there where fire makes dance!” Mullet man, urinate and vomit away. By the way, do you work at Wal-Mart or a gas station? Later Dio fans, catch you on another Sab blog one day.

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/4/2007, 10:48 pm EST

One more correction to my last posting on this issue…”If you could muster any point of contention……..” Sorry Mullet Man, I type freehand w/out spell check & every now and then make the unintentional error. I see you don’t utilize spell check as well and your diction is reflective of such. Hey, one one thing, “I’m off the witch. I may never never never come home.” Dio fans sing it with me! “But the magic that I’ll feel is worth a………….” A “LIFETIME!!!!” Sorry you Oz fans have such sour grapes. I however will continue to enjoy all the Sab singers finest efforts and great music. Until another worthy issue commands my intelligence I will holster my tongue and save it for another day. Bitter and cutting is the truth isn’t it!

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/4/2007, 10:38 pm EST

This is now a dead issue. I’ve made my point beyond contestation. Can I spell that for you Mullet Man, slowly, with me…c.o.n.t.e.s.t.a.t.i.o.n. & unfortunately for you, as evident by my posting in comparison to your juvenile rebuttal, there is a level of intellect beyond your reach. Wasn’t born in the South either, Northeast to be exact, but that doesn’t stop you from putting your cerebralness on display did it? If you could muster a points of contention with substance to contradict my position, then maybe I would be willing to listen, but you’ve already made it poiniently clear you can’t. It was never about which Sab was better, it was about the music of qaulity, period. Don’t feel too inadequate in your absence of I.Q. to make a valid point, no one else did either. You know why? B/c when you base your arguements on valid substance and fact, advisaries and nay sayers have no choice but to admit truth, or resort to ad-hominems or off topic deferring material to distract you from the subject at hand. Oh, sorry, that’s too complex for you. Basically you could resort to nothing else but name calling and distraction from the topic in retaliation to a founded viewpoint. Really nothing else to say that hasn’t already been said, other than, go back to school boy, cause somebody just took you out behind the academic shed and had their way with you!

mullet man | 4/4/2007, 2:03 pm EST

i’m gonna urinate on everyone around me and vomit on everyone i missed when i go to this show! this will almost be as good as the warrant/winger show. this is REAL rock n roll for real guys who have real testicles that love to show them off. gotta make sure my mullet looks extra pretty for the show too! cause only real tought rock fans like this real tough music, and i’m tough! like, the movie 300 tough! like, so tough its almost gay tough! but dont call me gay or i’ll beat you up! rock n roooooll baby! the south shall riiiise again!

Badbill | 4/4/2007, 1:27 pm EST

DIO RULES…i went to the instore signing at best buy yesterday in NYC…the band was so cool they talked to u let u take pics….but Best Buy Sucked….I WOULD NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN GO TO A STORE SIGNING AT BEST BUY….THEY TREATED U LIKE A PRISONER….TRYING TO RUSH U OUT AND THROUGH….I WANTED TO PUNCH SOME OF THOSE EMPLOYEES IN THE FACE THEY SUCK….I WISH THEY HAD IT AT VIRGIN MEGASTORE OR SOMEWHERE ELSE….LIKE I SAID DIO, IOMMI, GEZZER, AND VINNY WERE SO COOL THEY WERE SO DOWN TO EARTH…AWESOME GROUP OF GUYS WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM STAY TOGETHER AND WRITE A NEW ALBUM….HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE??

Badbill | 4/4/2007, 1:24 pm EST

Hey i really like what sabbath in paradise clearwater had to say….he is right ozzy is ozzy but compared to some great singers u can’t even put him there….dio is awesome….he has such a great voice and for his age…wow….another thing i think Dio is very underrated he doesn’t get enough recognition at all he is one hell of a front man and musician….Dio rules thats what they should of called mob rules…dio rules!!!

Anonymous | 4/4/2007, 10:48 am EST

This is “Heaven & Hell” , not Sabbath.

The Seeker | 4/4/2007, 9:56 am EST

Jack Black was wrong; it ISN’T time for Dio to pass the torch. He’s definitely still got it!

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/3/2007, 10:20 pm EST

Correction in my qoute “How many gas station attendants and Wal-Mart employees can there possibly be.” ANYWAY, point is give stuff a chance, go back through that catolog and crank it up, give it a go. It’s good stuff. You didn’t stop liking women after your first love did you(those of you that didn’t marry your first love).

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/3/2007, 10:10 pm EST

Boner’s comment was funny. Reminds of some of the Ozzfests I’ve been to & I turn to look at my friends & say, “How many gas station attendants & Wal-Mart employees can the possibly be?” No fat girlfriend to feed, but food is cheaper than symbols of wealth & materialism that the snooty arm candy has a penchant for. Score 1 for the fat girls! Back to the subject at hand. Still is amazing the lack of cred Dio gets & how the OzSab fans rail on him. To that I can only say, who is the better singer? Seriously, & bare in mind vocals are an instrument & can be measured. Don’t get scared now, pitch your arguement with substance & not insignificant defammatory slander. Who is the better lyricist? Geezer wrote all the lyrics for Sab until Ronnie came to town. Makes me wonder who wrote or co-wrote Oz’ material after he was canned. Although, great material it was. And the knock on Dio’s age? What Oz is 3-4 years younger, wow! He’s in his early 60’s & can belt it like he was 20. Compare back to Oz? No answer huh? Dio hits notes, pitches, carries an octave range & remembers his lyrics w/out a teleprompter. I seen the decline of Oz over the years & it’s sad. I was at the Maiden/Sab Ozzfest in Holmdel,NJ & Oz promplty forgot 1 of the first lines to the opening song. Then his voice went out 2/3way thru the show. & who has toyed Sab along for the last decade w/out new material? Iommi & Geez are still creating and ready to hit the studio anytime, but Oz & Sharon are predisposed w/Oz career, not Sab. Oz is the reason Sab hasn’t been a creative force in metal for a decade, no one else. Iommi sold out to get Oz back & where has he left them? Dio was selling out shows all up the N-east on the Dehumanizer tour & Iommi bailed for the chance to play big arenas and accolades w/Oz. Dio was willing to stay & build the name & legacy to where it once was. Don’t get me wrong, I love Oz, his Sab days, his voice, his material on his own.. Diary..,Blizzard.., No Rest.., Ultimate Sin, awesome. He is undoubtedly the most recognizable and most successful metal singer of all time. But he’s not the best singer of all time. You better talk Dio, Halford, I.Gillan, Cornell, Dickinson, & people of that sort there. Oz’ best ally & cash cow has been that unforgettable voice. The voice is unmistakable and compelling. His taste for & ability to surround himself w/talent is impeccable. He is great, he’s an icon. That being said, Dio’s 1st 4 releases after Sab were stellar metal classics. Diver & Last In Line are phenominal. His last 2 are very noteworthy. I just don’t see the reason to be so close minded as an OzSab fan. Most DioSab fans embrace the Oz days & Oz material thereafter. I can’t imagine all the good music I would have missed out on being that obstinant. No VH after Diamond Dave, No AC/DC beyond Bon, Jugulator and Demolition by Priest didn’t exist, No Audioslave b/c Cornell left S-garden and Rage left that rapper Zach. Fact is there was a Sab after Oz, & a damn good one. H&H, Mob Rules, Born Again will always be classics & you can’t take that away from them b/c Oz wasn’t there. Check out Tyr-Anno Mundi..stellar, Valhalla..stupendous, Headless Cross..When Death Calls..just crushing. Fact is Sab existed after Oz, good times & bad, but Sab was never commercial anyway. A true fan is a true fan, who can appreciate all quality regardless and judging the music on it’s merit. Yeah there was sub par material too, but what was Tech Ec. & Never Say Die? You can’t always write a Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, a Vol.4, a Sabotage, a Paranoid, a H-Hell, a Mob Rules, a Born Again. Broaden your horizons, don’t live in a box. I should do this professionally. Later people, keep loving music, Sabbath and beyond.

enemyfrank | 4/3/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Aww…My comment was deleted. Truth hurts, huh R.S.?

So much for free speech.

steve | 4/3/2007, 5:20 pm EST

Dio is 64.

Boner | 4/3/2007, 12:58 pm EST

How many of you losers have obese girlfriends? Be honest.

Marty P. | 4/3/2007, 12:41 pm EST

Sabbath with Dio is very much like 80’s no make-up KISS !! (Only KISS were heavier !!)

Klaatu | 4/3/2007, 12:22 pm EST

I do my share of complaining about the Americal Idol crap. So kudos to RS for covering worthy material. I like to read about rock.

Bawrence | 4/3/2007, 11:44 am EST

Dio should be spelled ‘D-ough’ CUZ HE’S MONEY IN THE BANK. Sword rock 4-eva.

Ricky's My Ninja | 4/3/2007, 11:24 am EST

I attended the show in NYC and I am a huge Dio fan and like Black Sabbath but hadnit heard much of Dio Sabbath, I was greatly impressed and think that you can not compare OzzSab and DioSab because they are so different. Great show and I am pumped to see them again in May in CT with MegaDeth and Machinehead. It was also great to see all the metal heads swarming on NYC and see all the uptight yuppies walking by with looks of fear in their eyes at all of us waiting outside in black with images of the devil all over our clothes!!! RAISE THE HORNS!! also didnt see any chick almost get raped.

Bob | 4/3/2007, 11:06 am EST

There’s always been something of a mystery about Dio’s real age, but he is definitely older than most people think - which makes his singing all the more impressive. I’ve even seen a publicity still from him as a member of a doo-wop band!

Bob | 4/3/2007, 11:03 am EST

I am so pissed that I’ll be out of town when this show comes to Houston. But I got the new CD today and - I’m happy to say - two of the three new tracks can stand alongside much of their best material. Dio always gets the short shrift compared to his Ozzy, but his is the true classic metal voice.

VladIII | 4/3/2007, 10:52 am EST

I have to agree about the Dio Sabbath not being better than the first six Ozzy Sabbath albums. Having said that, I agree about the Dio stuff not being appreciated. I didn’t until recently. Although I always thought the Dio era was better that the later incarnations. I think Dio is the premier heavy metal vocalist. I liked the H&H grup concept focusing on the Dio era. I couldn’t take it when Dio sang the Ozzy songs back in’81-’82. I was there and the show was Great !

LIMEY GO HOME | 4/3/2007, 9:54 am EST

SABBATH RULES! Check out the Dio era double live lp LIVEVIL….good stuff.

brian d | 4/3/2007, 8:56 am EST

rainbow ,,was awsome too,,so was dios first band elf

Nefilim | 4/3/2007, 3:13 am EST

it`s Neon Knights ….

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/3/2007, 2:02 am EST

What should also be duly noted is that Sab took on a different style when Oz left & Dio came. I jam the ol’ Sab too & love it, but the Dio material was great as well. Mob Rules is throat slasher, Neon Knights is just lyrically nasty, H&H & Children of the Sea are masterpieces. Both Lp’s are chokked to the gills w/classics, just as the 1st 6 Lp’s w/Oz. Certainly Dehumanizer was no less than Tech Ec. & Never Say Die. Those weren’t stellar. Oz Sab fans are often close minded. Open up! I’ll tell you another classic well ahead of it’s time that got no cred. at release but critics revel it now, Born Again. Iommi shreds & I.Gillan is sick, just sick on the vocals and lyrics. The heaviest Sab album of all, it’ll tear your ear canal out. Ward was reigning cymbols all in your head, even if he was serious addict & head case at the time. Come to think of it, the RnR media shun non-Oz Sab too, it’s a shame. There was decent material w/Martin as well on H-less Cross, Tyr & Cross Purposes, albeit these were B rated Lp’s compared to Oz, Dio, & I.Gillan. Shutting out non-Oz Sab is liking saying non DLR Van Halen was insignificant. I love DLR VH, but Sam laid some great tracks too. It’s you who shut down Sab after Oz. Sab kept rockin & had 3 more classics & a multitude of great songs after that. Did you shut out Priest after Halford left too? Pity, good stuff there too that you shut out through near sightedness. Get w/change, grab some Chevelle, Clutch, Audio, Alabama T-Pussy, G-vnmt Mule, etc. People didn’t stop making good music just cause Ozzy left. Later!

Sabbath in Paradise/Clearwater | 4/3/2007, 1:37 am EST

I’ve been a Sab fan since I was a kid & I’ve seen many live versions:Oz, Martin, R.Gillan & Dio. I love old Sab & the first 6 releases are the bible of metal, but Dio gets no cred. H&H and Mob Rules stack up to the Oz albums any day. Dio’s pipes are gold. He’s not the functioning idiot Oz is now a days is he?

matt | 4/3/2007, 1:19 am EST

heaven and hell isnt a bad song but its defintely not the top of sabbaths catalog common

lik roper | 4/3/2007, 12:51 am EST

i love old sabbath but i especially like the first four songs on the album heaven and hell - that’s ulimate metal…

Sabhead | 4/2/2007, 10:28 pm EST

Heaven and Hell? Best Sabbath song? No way! I agree that the H&H album pulled Sabbath out of the late 70’s drugged-out muck, but come on….. The first 6 Sab albums are chocked full of stuff that blows away that song. Let see… Symptom, Into the Void, Electric funeral, Sabbra Cadabra…and on and on it goes….

MJM | 4/2/2007, 9:42 pm EST

Rolling Stone talking about a great rock n’ roll band? Very cool to see this great tour getting a little attention. The Dio era is my favorite and Dehumanizer is the best secret weapon in the Sabbath catalogue.

zentropa | 4/2/2007, 9:25 pm EST

Saw these guys at the old Rhode Island Aud. in 1969 on some very potent acid. Very strange night.Thought I was having a flashback.I thought the photo of Ronnie James Dio was a hair-dyed Michael Bolton. These guys must be a 100 Fuckin Years Old.

THIS is REAL ROCK N ROLL | 4/2/2007, 9:22 pm EST

FVCK ALL INDIE WIMPS!

lansdale | 4/2/2007, 8:27 pm EST

64? Rolling Stone used to pedal journalism, and any moron can go check their facts. Dio was born in ‘49…

This might sound like a minor bitching point, but if they screw up this simple, basic fact of how old the dude, how much else are they not checking?

massMurderJunkie666 | 4/2/2007, 8:10 pm EST

I was there almost saw a chick get raped.

Ken | 4/2/2007, 5:59 pm EST

I was there last Friday and it was by far the best Black Sabbath has sounded in the 8 times I’ve seen them. I’ve caught every Sabbath tour since Forbidden and this was the most satisfied I’ve been after a show. The crowd was so into the song Heaven and Hell. It was one of those “had to be there moments”. I’ll be seeing this tour again, when they hit Philadelphia in the middle of May. I can’t wait.

ken vail jr | 4/2/2007, 5:58 pm EST

yeah dio is a great singer no doubt about it…but no one knows for sure how old he is…i have read he was born in 1948.

Richard | 4/2/2007, 5:18 pm EST

I’ll be seeing them in a few weeks and can hardly wait.

In fact, I’ll be buying the new compilation at midnight tonight.

Thank you to RollingStone for this review and remembering there is STILL an audience (among your readers) for this kind of music.

Kevin Galligan | 4/2/2007, 5:14 pm EST

I was there. It was awesome. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I agree 100% with the cryptkeeper line.

They fumbled the merchandise. I wanted a shirt, but they only had one booth at the end of the show, and there was a mob around it. Ah, well, I was there…

Sam | 4/2/2007, 4:50 pm EST

AWESOME! Can’t wait to see them in Albany!

Steve | 4/2/2007, 4:49 pm EST

The Ozzy era was unique and immeasurably influential, but musically Sabbath never made an album more satisfying than “Heaven And Hell.”

dear sir | 4/2/2007, 4:37 pm EST

“Heaven and Hell” the greatest Sabbath song ever? Surely you jest…

pkrocket22 | 4/2/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Couldn’t agree more with your statement comparing H&H to the previous OZZFest shows. I love Ozzy, but I love him even more when he’s in the right key. Dio got it done. Hasn’t lost a step since I saw him in ‘84. More than I can say for myself.

lik roper | 4/2/2007, 4:19 pm EST

DIO means GOD…
