Update: The Edge Talks Rock Auction, New U2 Album

3/29/07, 5:08 pm EST

U2’s one and only guitarist the Edge spoke to our Evan Serpick about the latest fund-raising initiative of his Music Rising organization. On April 21st, top-notch music memorabilia from John Lennon’s glasses to Janis Joplin’s love letters to Elvis Presley’s recording contract will go on the block at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe, with proceeds going to aid musicians affected by the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “I’ve been amazed at how generous people have been,” says the guitarist, who created the fund in 2005 with Bob Ezrin and Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz. He knows whereof he speaks: He’ll be putting own cream 1975 Gibson Les Paul (which he bought during the Joshua Tree sessions in New York and has played on every U2 tour since Achtung Baby) up for sale. “It was one of those guitars that had songs in it. It’s a very well-used, well-loved instrument. I’ll miss it.”

The guitarist also confirms that U2 are in the midst of recording a new album. “We’re working on new songs and getting lost in the music,” he says. “I don’t think we’re going to try and think too much about what we’re going to do with it yet, we’re just going to do a lot of writing and just see what gives. We’re giving ourselves the luxury of just working on the songs. There’s some amazing things coming through.” He calls the material the group’s been working on with producer Rick Rubin “fascinating stuff.” When asked whether the band will team up again with longtime collaborators Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, he merely laughs: “You might be surprised how quickly that happens.”

way to ‘edge’ out from under st. bono’s star. i am happy to see that someone is giving back to their own country.

Skyline | 3/29/2007, 6:14 pm EST

Kinda funny that you put up a picture of the Edge playing a Tele.

Isn’t that the point of the article?

Jackasses.

hope | 3/29/2007, 6:22 pm EST

Right on Edge. What is up with the pic with the telecaster? It’d make a lot more sense to have a photo with the guitar that’s GOING ON SALE!!!

War | 3/29/2007, 7:38 pm EST

The Edge is the only thing I like about U2.

Elliottmarx | 3/29/2007, 8:12 pm EST

To me Rubin and Eno are polar opposites. I think Nigel Goodrich has a sound right in the middle. I think I want Rubin to produce this album. Let’s get a new Passengers album with Eno at the helm.

U2 – A beacon of hope and integrity in a sea of the mediocre and inconsequential.

“You might be surprised how quickly that happens.” – almost suggests U2 are disappointed with the Rubin collaboration…..?

yeah, the breek consulate here has an office sign saying The Edge. Sure U-2 plagiarised a lot of my written materials. Still, I quite enjoyed them. But those Greek guys from EMI had moved to Hewitt Street back in 80s because of the Italian guy? cennin and his wife Denise, TM teachers, home schooling? Saying, we are going to live in USA. Buddists movved in later, with those paper flags.
God I miss Denise. That Blondie song too.
God I miss her!
They had son. See you Reiko Cennin!

Klaatu | 3/30/2007, 5:13 pm EST

Beckett

The children who write for RS these days can identify the last four American Idols, but they can’t tell a tele from a Les Paul.

tiago | 3/30/2007, 7:05 pm EST

U2 Rocks… a melhor banda de sempre!!!

B | 3/31/2007, 4:59 pm EST

Rubin is all about having songs ready to record, while U2 have traditionally ‘made it up as they’ve went along.’ Not a good fit. I knew it from day one, when it was reported. Basically, (and I love U2) U2 isn’t talented enough to just write songs on their own. They need their support cast as a fifth member (see S. Lillywhite and HTDAAB). Plus, Rubin is known for being almost a consultant, rather than a hands-on producer … which U2 needs every time they record.
Again, not a good fit.

What this means is that they’ll figure this out in the summer, switch producers and miss the Christmas release time, thus, we won’t see a new album until late ‘08. (cuz U2 is all about timing their releases around xmas …)

I used to love U2 (and to be honest, I still do), but they will need to step it up for me to maintain interest. The last two albums ranged from average to awful. And the last song they recorded with Rubin was that inferno of crappy music “Window in the Skies”…I am not excited for the new album.

staindpearlygirl | 4/1/2007, 6:24 pm EST

AHHMM feeling the older U2, still lovem but interest level is down quite a bit, much rather hear fresh new rock…..

John | 4/1/2007, 7:39 pm EST

I’d love to have the Achtung Baby sound come back. I agree with anonymous about the last two albums.

Captain Duck | 4/2/2007, 9:24 am EST

no “hope” – the Edge’s own country is England, not Ireland

Beckett | 4/3/2007, 1:29 am EST

Klaatu:

Yeah, you’d think a suposed music magazine would know the difference between the two.

Cendor | 4/4/2007, 11:23 am EST

To the dude who said this: “The children who write for RS these days can identify the last four American Idols, but they can’t tell a tele from a Les Paul.”

I believe the Edge IS giving away a Les Paul, not the guitar (Tele)in the picture.

dylan | 4/4/2007, 6:15 pm EST

heyy to the guy that said that u2 cant write on their own listen to One and Pride in the name of love
