Fro Patro Goes Home, Bono Becomes A Knight, Ryan Adams Goes Bananas

3/29/07, 9:15 am EST

american idol (chris sligh being hugged after his ousting)

  • We’re starting to fear that Sanjaya could win. It’s important not to discount the insanity of the voting public as evidenced by last night’s dejection of Chris Sligh. We have to say that we’re thrilled “Fro Patro” is behind us but sad to see Sligh go so soon when people like that inane Haley girl are still around.
  • Bono has been knighted. According to a post on U2’s Web site, the humanitarian/rocker was “presented with an honorary knighthood on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen” by the British Ambassador in Dublin earlier this morning. The honor was bestowed in recognition of Bono’s contribution to music and for his work as an activist. Congrats Bono!
  • The Beastie Boys are finally doing away with those pesky lyrics. The group has announced that they will perform a series of instrumental shows this summer. They promise that this – and everything else they plan to do in the future – will be “sick.”
  • Why have an actual Web site when you can just display falling bananas instead? That seems to be Ryan Adams’ thinking.
  • We are told that an announcement on Panic! At the Disco’s Web site tells us all that the group will play the NCAA kickoff event this Friday in Atlanta. We can’t confirm this because the band’s site – with it’s overwhelming dose of baroque piano audio and complex naked burlesque girl graphics – keeps shutting our computer down.
  • Looks like we’re all being treated to a Foxy Brown trial. The diva pled not guilty to charges resulting from a fight she allegedly got into with the owner of a beauty supply store in Florida.
  • Not another confusing qualifier about a British singer’s chart position. According to BBC News, when Joss Stone’s album Introducing Joss Stone debuted at Number 2 on the charts yesterday, it became “the highest new entry by a British female artist in US chart history.” That sounds like it means something, so congrats Joss!

I can tell you’re purposely being nice now after all the criticism you’ve received…

mmd | 3/29/2007, 9:53 am EST

Liz, you’re still a douch. LONG LIVE THE BLACK CROWES!!!!

BMS | 3/29/2007, 10:01 am EST

Admittedly, I’ve been critical of this and all of RS of late, but today’s post was actually pretty damn sold…credit where credit is due.
BTW mmd, the Crowes haven’t been relavent at ANY point during this decade. Put down your J and join the rest of us in the present.

Jay | 3/29/2007, 10:29 am EST

I noticed that if you click on a falling bananna on Ryan Adams’ website, it brings up a tour date page. The best part is that Ryan is apparently playing a gig at STONEHENGE!! No word if there will be any dancing dwarves.

JBK (Surf City Sounds Plus) | 3/29/2007, 10:42 am EST

Hi: What goes up must come down. For me, I think American Idol is beginning to lose its luster and is starting to fade. It’s too bad they don’t develop the tech to enforce one vote per phone number and/or per email. Or another way to make the voting process as fair as it ought to be…~JBK

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 10:46 am EST

BMS- The Crows haven’t been relevant at ANY point this decade, very true- That being said, the “present” you speak of, doesn’t have a whole lot of greatness going for it, be it musicaly or pop culturaly, so if the Crows got their shit together and did something, it wouln’t be a bad thing- Oh and yeah- Some of us dont smoke weed- sorry. On a side note: I can’t be mad at you anymore Liz…so long as you repent and swear alegence to the Black Crows’ awesomeness…

Tallboy | 3/29/2007, 10:52 am EST

mmd is right, Liz- you are.

The Crowes rule, and I hope Sanjaya wins Idol and the show comes to a screeching halt.

Jeremy | 3/29/2007, 10:53 am EST

BMS we are in the present. The Black Crowes are more relevent that any crap music that is put out today. Why dont you go listen to some more emo!! Dont cut yourself!!

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 10:58 am EST

Jeremy- Get em dude! You said what I wanted to. I shouldn’t be so polite

timmay | 3/29/2007, 11:02 am EST

the black crowes blow, american idol blow, rs kinda blows and Sanjaya is MY role model!!

I hate Mike Anthony | 3/29/2007, 11:08 am EST

Liz, I believe you have dissed the wrong band and unleashed a wave of hippie terror on yourself….but I do admit, the Crowes rule!

Whatever. | 3/29/2007, 11:08 am EST

I’m with BMS (Who is obviously emo, apparently, because he doesn’t like the Black Crowes?).

lik roper | 3/29/2007, 11:19 am EST

relative overpopulation has led to a literal deluge of new artists and music, and it gets increasingly more difficult to find the needle in the haystack, but from what i’ve heard, joss’s new album sounds really good…she sounds pissed off and that can make for great art…

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 11:26 am EST

Not all people who like the Crows are hippies. I’m not a hippie- I’m Republican!

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 11:28 am EST

I’ve also heard some of Joss Stone’s new stuff and it is good. She’s hot to boot. What more could you ask for?

Terry | 3/29/2007, 11:31 am EST

I know this really doesn’t mean much, but the last Panic! site was much worse than it is now. I would have taken no less than one hour to find a link to any sort of information. It looked more like an architect’s paradise.

Jeremy | 3/29/2007, 11:35 am EST

Whatever, you could be a douchbag too. It falls in the same catgory!!

Matt | 3/29/2007, 11:38 am EST

Has Goodman ever considered taking a writing course?

Fred Blassie | 3/29/2007, 11:43 am EST

What does “last nights DEJECTION of Chris Sligh” mean, anyway? Do you mean “rejection?” (or “ejection?”) I’m waiting for the new TV show “American Speller.”

timmay | 3/29/2007, 11:50 am EST

I think This will be if not the last, then the second to lasy season of AI. Cuz if this is all America had to offer for 07 then whats left for 08???

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 11:55 am EST

I don’t know, but if the Sanjayas are all we have to look forward to, America needs to find a new guilty pleasure

abandonedstation | 3/29/2007, 12:13 pm EST

rs following american idol now is like as if rs followed the gong show in the seventies.

Sir Bono. Doesn’t matter, Bono can’t get any more noble in his eyes. All those knights who killed dozens of frenchmen six five hundred years ago must be rolling in their grave (and Bono’s Irish! Even worse!). Is this just another attempt to make the monarchy hip and relevant? Yes. Yes it is. In which case, they should have given it to Peter Doherty.

No Beastie lyrics? How will I know what Mike D like on his sandwiches?

mmd | 3/29/2007, 1:37 pm EST

Ah, yes, that question of being relevent in the context of art and more specifically pop music. I judge bands primarily on their ability to right great songs with great melodies that will be heard and sung for a longtime to come along with the artist’s honesty and courage to put themselves out there. Bands are “relevant” to me only when they exhude these qualities and reach me on an emotional level, whether or not they sing about today’s issues or express today’s fashionable poses. Put it this way, Bob Dylan’s words wouldn’t mean half as much or be as relevant today without the melodies he wrote that have made people’s hearts dance for a long time to come. The Black Crowes are an honest band with great songs. Listen to Twice as Hard, Thorn In my Pride, or anything off those first 3 records, especially the 2nd. They aren’t the Stones, U2, or the Clash, but they got the songs and the attitude to back their shit up, and if anyone, especially Liz douchebag Goodman can’t see that, then I feel sorry for them. She and any other Crowes haters have their opinions and tastes and that’s fine. But when push comes to shove, The Crowes can take on any band out there, especially in the last 10 years. Most of these people who hate the Crowes haven’t heard their records and might even like the Stones or the Small Faces, which I think is a laughable. When a band wears its influences well or brings back a vibe in a good way, its damn refreshing. Oasis and the Strokes anybody? And what about Oasis, who I love to death, and who probably gets so much respect from the likes of Liz Goodmen. They haven’t produced anything relevant since Morning Glory. Who cares that the Crowes did not release a record in the last 4 years? Are Echoe and the Bunnymen or the Faces out of fashion because they haven’t released anything recently. The bands out today still revere those guys. Most great music and great bands are those artists who wear there hearts on their sleeves and are deemed uncool or unfashionable mostly by the hipster scum of the world(who seem to have migrated to Brooklyn) who can only listen to music on vinyl, whose knowledge of music only goes back to the last 7 years, and who will eat up anything the NME tells them to. Heart and soul over cool posturing any day of the week. I’m bored of this shit and so are you. I’m out.

MMD’s picks of the Week
Kings of Leon-Mc Fearless
Zerobridge- Great new band from New York
The View
Michael Jackson- Thriller and Off the Wall
Peter Bjorn and John-Writers Block
New Order
U2- Josua Tree and Achtung Baby
Oasis-Morning Glory

Lost Tv Series

Jeff | 3/29/2007, 1:46 pm EST

*yawn* gosh what a boring news day!

Dr. Ralph | 3/29/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Yet another blown opportunity to show us a picture of a half naked Joss Stone!!! American Idol is the new Ed Sullivan. What other entity has half the population watching a new singer? The more things change, the more they stay the same.

piddycent | 3/29/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Bono is a turd sandwich

Christov | 3/29/2007, 2:00 pm EST

American Idol is so bubble gum, and everything that is wrong with the direction music is heading. I say go sanjaya!!! I think its nothing more than a sinfully delightful joke, and sligh tried too hard to be funny and witty. Black Crowes are cool. Bono..good for him. Foxy Brown? Who cares? Beasties need lyrics for me to go to their show. Joss Stone is hot. Christov out.

Sanchez | 3/29/2007, 2:20 pm EST

Joss Stone is fresh gear.

dlt | 3/29/2007, 2:26 pm EST

Poised

w/ Hannity and Colmes,
And Suntasia, Uh, San–

Tim | 3/29/2007, 2:36 pm EST

American Idol should be renamed Teen Idol, because the 13 year old girls who watch this show will always vote for the boy with the best hair,Sanjaya will win, and the 13 year old girls will buy his CD,he will be forgotten within 6 months,by then AI will have another new teen idol cranked out of their endless audition system.

Morgan | 3/29/2007, 2:37 pm EST

It is a boring news day. Wish we had some scantaly clad photos of Joss Stone and my future wife (The Poll girl) to look at. That would rule!

Poll Girl | 3/29/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Hi Morgan, what’s your sign?

PiscesAppleDude | 3/29/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Good morning Liz! I still love you

rg | 4/1/2007, 4:16 am EST

american idol like its poor cousins australian and british idol is everything wrong with the music industry, at this rate we will never see the next aretha franklin, elvis or paul maccartney, just these disfunctional freaks who need to get a life- and realise there are no shortcuts to lasting success in music or anything in life for that matter
