We’re worried about YouTube. According to viewers who voted in the Web site’s first annual video awards, OK Go produced the most creative video on the site this year. While we admit their clip for “Here It Goes Again” — with it’s innovative use of home fitness equipment — is super-cool, we find it difficult to believe it is the single most creative piece of user-generated footage put up on YouTube this year. And even if it is, that still doesn’t explain the top picks in these other categories, which include Best Series, Best Comedy, Best Commentary, Best Music Video, Most Inspirational, and Most Adorable.
We are not going to parse out the mammoth levels of disappointment we felt after viewing some of the winners — two memorable duds are “Hotness Prevails,” which won for best commentary (and has absolutely no prevailing hotness and comes across as a garbled, painfully executed attempt at naked humor,) and the hokey Ask a Ninja series, which won best series for what appears to be the overuse of metaphors — but we will say the collective blah left us thinking this internet thing might not exactly be the frontier of cutting edge cultural commentary it’s supposed to be. (Admittedly Kiwi, the winner for Most Adorable, cheered us up, as it’s undeniably warm and fuzzy).
What do you think about the winners? Who should’ve won?
