YouTube’s Video Awards Make Us Fear for the Future

3/26/07, 5:04 pm EST

We’re worried about YouTube. According to viewers who voted in the Web site’s first annual video awards, OK Go produced the most creative video on the site this year. While we admit their clip for “Here It Goes Again” — with it’s innovative use of home fitness equipment — is super-cool, we find it difficult to believe it is the single most creative piece of user-generated footage put up on YouTube this year. And even if it is, that still doesn’t explain the top picks in these other categories, which include Best Series, Best Comedy, Best Commentary, Best Music Video, Most Inspirational, and Most Adorable.

We are not going to parse out the mammoth levels of disappointment we felt after viewing some of the winners — two memorable duds are “Hotness Prevails,” which won for best commentary (and has absolutely no prevailing hotness and comes across as a garbled, painfully executed attempt at naked humor,) and the hokey Ask a Ninja series, which won best series for what appears to be the overuse of metaphors — but we will say the collective blah left us thinking this internet thing might not exactly be the frontier of cutting edge cultural commentary it’s supposed to be. (Admittedly Kiwi, the winner for Most Adorable, cheered us up, as it’s undeniably warm and fuzzy).

What do you think about the winners? Who should’ve won?

I believe that OK GO’ s video sticks out from the rest in a very positive way; The audience is tired of the two most common standard-videos:

1) Rap with tits, ass, Ferraris, Rolex and piles of $

2) Grunge played out in the dessert, in a garage or on the roof of some building.

The choice is simply a reaction on the stereotypes that developed!

While I thought Terra Naomi was awfully good, I find it hard to believe her stuff was picked as best music - but at least she has talent.

The rest of the awards definitely make you go “hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…”

I think I’m beginning to agree with the aphorism “Youth is wasted on the young!”

the picks were utubes featured clips that were featured cause utube picked them and put them on the front page thus generating lots of hits thus picking them for the awards.

It all goes to show that even thought it is called U-TUBE, someone is still controlling what we watch and what is worthy of winning an award..

creative and original, rather see 4 really hot babes doing the treadmill act as a side show, let the musicians remain musicians………

the best youtube video out there is the one where the bride freaks out and cuts off all her hair… funniest thing i’ve ever seen

Dear whoever wrote this,

Did you actually watch “kiwi?” In no way is that story “warm and fuzzy.” It is a quasi-depressing tale of a creature fulfilling its dream through suicide. Good? Yes. “Warm and fuzzy?”…No.

Saw OK Go in concert, I wish they did this when I saw them, but I guess I’ll just have to enjoy it via video! Peace.

The only reason they even had these awards was to take the spotlight off of the fact that they were stealing Viacom’s videos and are being sued for $1 billlion. They didn’t put any effort into it, it’s a joke. I go to Break.com anyway, there are actually funny videos there.

Funkybones | 3/26/2007, 10:55 pm EST

Most creative, or heck, best video EVER! Ms Peachez - Fry that chicken

meglovesrs | 3/26/2007, 8:08 pm EST

the Revolution of Dance, Shoes, Muffins, and Text Message Breakup should’ve won. Those are the FUNNIEST clips i’ve ever seen

Unfortunately it is exactly the cutting edge of cultural commentary, because it shows us how far our culture has sunk!
with only a few redeemable videos, the list was ridiculous. But by what standard are we evaluating the quality of the videos chosen? If we are measuring by the mixed up and incoherent value system that is embarrassingly serving as our anchor for moral integrity today, we get a lot of the cultural problems that produce this kind of bare minimum level entertainment seeking that is predominant in western culture today. The fact that reality shows (which are the in fact dishonest and not real much at all), lame and tasteless horror movies, and a constant unhealthy obsession with Anna Nicole Smith (including mostly her death), is the things that people turn to for entertainment, speak volumes to the fact that our culture is in trouble. It is no surprise that in a world that does not no how to parent, how to be a mother or a father, how to judge or manage their impulses, how to be fulfilled in life, how to not stay living in the parents house at 28 years old, turns to such crap for amusement. What a drag this culture is. Can we please, one day, get rid of all this crap, and turn to things of real substance? Real significance to anything that resembles some idea of what is important in life? We dont even have to totally agree on what that is, but can we at least try? This is an absolute waste of a generations time!!!

Diss a point ment, I just started to watch youtube a very promising entry ti the world of information and entertainment. The vast wealth of old films and videos amazed me. As much as the youtube libuary delighted the efforts and picks of the so called “creative new” disapointed. Not funny, obvious humour abounded, artistic efforts failed misserably with the only bright spot being in the “cute” catorgory. There is always next year I guess !!

redneck lonely girl 15 and the guy who boinked his cousin, hands down.

Brittany | 3/26/2007, 6:28 pm EST

That takes skill. I wonder how many times they fell flat on their face doing that. They deserve to win.

Marky | 3/26/2007, 6:03 pm EST

Hi All, this will be my final post. I was trying to be funny. Didn’t work, I apologize for offending anyone.

ken vail jr | 3/26/2007, 5:55 pm EST

there is a cable channel called THE TUBE….that is killer i don’t see that mentioned here….

Trixie | 3/26/2007, 5:34 pm EST

OK Go did a wonderful job on their video and deserved to win, but music videos aren’t dead just yet. Thank god for the channel Fuse, which mostly airs music videos It puts every music channel to shame.

However, YouTube is very in at the moment and MySpace isn’t as big as it quite used to be. FaceBook is taking over that. Soon, something better will come around and I’m sure YouTube won’t be as popular as it is now.

Adam | 3/26/2007, 5:28 pm EST

The internet is the only place where you can really see music videos now. Kudos to bands like OK Go who figured it out early. Now that MTV has based their programming on shows about pretty white people with problems, and VH1 is right behind them, video sites like You Tube, MySpace, and others are the new channel for artists to get their stuff out there…

Kaitlin | 3/26/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Yeah i would like to say.. its a good idea to do the video thing, they should do that more often with the voting and stuff

Laters

hope to see more
