If Jennifer Hudson Doesn’t Play Aretha, Who Should?

3/26/07, 1:25 pm EST

Aretha Franklin

The proliferation of rocker biopics in the last two years has been serious. Poor overwhelmed actors are scrambling to capture the lives of everyone from Janis Joplin, to Brian Jones, to Bob Dylan. And while the jury is still out on whether these projects will be successful, none of the actors starring in these films faced the kind of challenge ahead for the actor (or actors) chosen to play Aretha Franklin.

The first lady of…everything related to music is overseeing the adaptation of her biography Aretha: From These Roots to both the stage and big screen. The musical based on Franklin’s life is already underway, with auditions apparently scheduled for May in Detroit. And, according to Access Hollywood, Franklin has already put her sorta stamp of approval on Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson . “Well, I don’t know. I’m not sure,” Franklin reportedly said of the idea. “The producers want to know how I feel about it, about her [Hudson] playing myself. What I’d like to see is three different people playing myself.”

We’re not sure there are enough worthy actors in Hollywood to put together another Todd Haynes-style mindfuck of a biopic in which multiple actors playing one character, but what Aretha wants, Aretha gets. (We’d like to see white, soul singing jew Amy Winehouse considered for the part — if Angelina can play Mariane Pearl, Amy W. can do Aretha.)

Who else should they consider for the Aretha Franklin film?

MrStyle | 3/26/2007, 4:18 pm EST

I thought Jennifer Hudson would be too tall but I was thinking more on the lines of Regina King.

Jug | 3/26/2007, 4:30 pm EST

All racist comments aside, I would like to see Melinda Dolittle play Aretha. Like Aretha she knows how to tell a story through song. Melinda has great things ahead of her, and playing Ms. Franklin should be one of them.

Kash | 3/26/2007, 5:32 pm EST

If Queen Latifah could sing, she would be perfect.

Marky | 3/26/2007, 5:37 pm EST

She’s the best. I like her songs about love & stuff. I’d like to see her play against Dr. Phil. Oh, my small toe fits.

Phantanstico | 3/26/2007, 7:02 pm EST

The woman who played Shirley on ‘What’s Happening’…

Know-It-All | 3/26/2007, 8:01 pm EST

Aretha was very nice looking when she was in her 20s, so they need a goodlooking girl. Some of the ones mentioned above don’t fit that bill.

An unknown actress who can lipsync Aretha’s records is probably the best way to go.

Jennifer Hudson might not be the right one and Fantasia can certainly sing, but her looks aren’t right.

Most of the people mentioned here are too old. Aretha’s greatest success was between 18 and 50.

robert deniro.

Know-It-All | 3/26/2007, 8:07 pm EST

On Amanda Doolittle, she’s too shy and has no neck. She resembles a dwarf. The young Aretha was an astonishing “live” performer her concerts reached delirium proportions and her soulful singing was almost too much bear. They need a REAL actress to recount a singer like The Queen.

nworbj | 3/26/2007, 9:19 pm EST

Aretha has a tendency to “take over” like she did during that famous diva concert. Sure she’s a star, a legend but she needs to come down a bit. I think Hudson would be ideal in playing Ms. Franklin.
We’re talking more Au for Ms. Hudson, something I think AF can’t stand to see.

lakisha jones

STRATCAT | 3/27/2007, 9:21 am EST

KING KONG BUNDY!
He would ROCK the role.
EAT YOUR HEART OUT JENNIFER!!!!!!!

STRATCAT | 3/27/2007, 9:37 am EST

i bet that if someone gave Aretha a lifetime supply buffet at the golden corral they could get the role.
Like Spinal Tap said “Big Bottom Big Bottom talk ablout BUMCAKES my girls got em!”

Tapika | 3/27/2007, 10:13 am EST

Definitely Jennifer Hudson.

I certainly don’t won’t to see Fantasia or Lakisha they’re not very pretty. Aretha looks better than them, even now.

And by the way who ever said “Shirley from What’s Happening”? She’s dead.

mikeky | 3/27/2007, 10:19 am EST

shania twain or aaron tippin. either would be fine as aretha.

Close to the edge | 3/27/2007, 4:37 pm EST

Why do I get the feeling that Tank johnson might be perfect for this role? Or perhaps Nell Carter from “Gimme a break.” She could sing, she’s large and in charge, and she’s surely got nothing to do. Unless, of course, she’s dead. Then she might be too skinny.

steveo | 3/27/2007, 6:01 pm EST

why not ANOTHER reality show to cast the perfect Aretha Franklin? It could be called “Ain’t Nothin’ Like the Real Thing!” :)

c fallin | 3/27/2007, 11:10 pm EST

JENNIFER HUDSON IS BY FAR THE INDISPUTABLE CHARACTOR FOR THIS ROLE. SHE HAS EVERYTHING IT TAKES TO MAKE IT BELIEVABLE AND ENJOYABLE. IT WAS BE A FILM TALKED ABOUT FOR A LONG TIME….

“DONT PLAY THAT SONG FOR ME,, CAUSE IT BRING BACK MEMORY”

Jentoris | 3/28/2007, 5:03 am EST

I would like to see Alicia Keys Play Aretha but she is too gorgeous i think.so i prefer Jennifer Hudson,Fantasia Barryno or Melinda Dolittle.

John | 3/28/2007, 10:53 am EST

Alicia has sleepy dopey eyes and she’s not “that” pretty, plus she comes off too much like a boy at times with them “canes” and “hats”.

I prefer a classy beautiful actress like Jennifer Hudson. She’s got that glamours diva thing going on just like Aretha.

Fantasia can sing(though a little whiny) but she’s way to ghetto and she Melinda and Alisha don’t look nothing like Aretha.

timbo | 3/28/2007, 8:23 pm EST

I dont know if she can act, but the only person who sounds like Aretha is Denetria Champ. Jennifer Hudson does not have either the grain, flexibility, dynamics or natural amplification to approximate the queen ..her heavy lower register is rather stentorian and the transition from head to chest voice is noticeable. Denetria Champ…..if she can act there is no other choice.

charliemapleton | 3/29/2007, 6:15 pm EST

Toni Braxton-ever since day one she’s been coincidentally and occaisionally compared to Aretha in terms of her bold, defiant vocals and illustrious beauty(who can argue?)She’d be perfect for the role, especially portraying Aretha in her up-and-coming years.

adridri | 3/31/2007, 8:29 am EST

The actress that is going to play Aretha, shouuld be able to have soul!! Jennifer Hudson would be perfect for the role!

Connie | 3/31/2007, 9:11 am EST

Toni Braxton for the young and Queen Latifah for the veteran actress both of these women are beautiful and can sing.

sgeorge | 4/2/2007, 10:45 am EST

Jennifer Hudson for the “young” Aretha…Jennifer Holliday for the more mature days in Arethe’a life.

Joe Mama | 4/2/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Y’all be racist fools !

ChiAtlwoman | 4/25/2007, 11:55 pm EST

Syleena Johnson – don’t sleep on her vocals – seriously…

Music Mogal | 2/5/2008, 1:52 am EST

Not gonna’ happen! Where would the theatre audience come from? Old people don’t go to movies. Best bet is a low budget DVD or play it on LifeTime, TV One, Black Stars or BET. Most of the people who would be really interested are in their 60’s. Queen Latifah is the 2008 Pearl Bailey.

shirley | 2/22/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Fantasia should play Ms. A. Franklin, she can go Aretha song.

Bluiett 2/20/2009 | 2/22/2009, 11:56 pm EST

Give the young ladies the chance I would love to see Fantasia play Ms. Franklin she can go on her song.

Dean | 5/2/2009, 11:25 am EST

The only singer mentioned that can actually sing Aretha’s songs as good as Aretha is Jennifer Hudson. I just watched Jennife at the Arie Crown in Chicago and she is NOT the same singer that was on AI. This is fully mature and in control singer much like Aretha.

soulmusic1 | 7/11/2009, 4:32 am EST

you have only to make as in the film of ray charles: recorded original musics of the queen not singer’s need out of necessity is needed

norma | 7/13/2009, 4:08 am EST

I don’t know but Jennifer Hudson is being hated on by a lot of call old divias. Jennifer is a very humble down to earth person. Jen is being hated on because she can really sing. Hoilday, and Aretha is hating on Jennifer because she is a better singer than them right out the box. I know Jennifer will do a great job if asked. I really don’t want her to try for the part. Jennifer is a very sweet person, and she is really to good for Aretha. I would love to see Jennifer play a Patty are a Gladdes. These two are the most likeable of all time. I know for thses she is sure to get another Oscar win. Jennifer please let this one pass. Aretha does not think you are good enough. There is know one in the business today can out sing a Jennifer Hudson. Fantasia she is also my girl, but can ont out sing Jhud. I also think Jennifer Hudson is way to beautiful and classy to play the role.

glittle | 10/31/2009, 11:03 am EST

Long live the Queen! While Fantasia has the voice, Jennifer Hudson is the best fitted for the part becuase she has both the acting ability, voice and poise to play Aretha. What no one seems to notice is that Aretha had to walk a narrow line between the church and R&B. Aretha has prevailed through abusive relationships, backbittingm, health problems, and grief to stay poised even when mean spirited comments are made about her. If the comment doesn’t uplift or help, maybe it just shouldn’t be said.
