Clapton Reminisces, Plots Another Crossroads Fest

3/22/07, 4:19 pm EST

He reunited with his Cream compatriots in 2005 and has been mining Derek and the Dominoes catalog on his current tour. Now Eric Clapton is getting ready to reopen yet another chapter of his classic-rock past — Blind Faith. During his second Crossroads Guitar Festival, July 28 at Toyota Park in Chicago, Clapton plans to reconnect with Steve Winwood for a mini-reunion of the famously short-lived band that put out one album and toured in 1969. “We’ve got unfinished business,” Clapton tells ROLLING STONE.

According to Clapton, a string of commercial successes over the past fifteen years has pushed him back to his roots — in Cream, the Dominoes, Blind Faith and the blues in general. “I’ve found that a kind of useful tool — whenever I get overwhelmed by popularity, I just tap myself on the shoulder and go back to where it all began,” he says. “Because otherwise I would get caught up in, you know, what other people think of me. So I do that, every now and then, whenever I feel like I’m getting on thin ice. It’s deliberate.”

With hotshot guitarists Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II anchoring the band on his current tour, Clapton has been revisiting the Dominos’ 1970 masterpiece Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. “Tell the Truth,” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad” plus the band’s rejiggered versions of Jimi Hendrix’ “Little Wing” and the blues standard “Key to the Highway” are staples of the set list. “What Doyle does is much more similar to what I do, but what Derek does is more like what Duane [Allman] did. I can connect with either one of them,” Clapton says of his young tour mates. “I mean, ‘Layla’ sounds just like the record. It’s great.”

The Crossroads Festival, a follow-up to the inaugural event Clapton launched in Dallas three years ago, will feature a who’s who of musical big-shots: Buddy Guy, B.B. King, John Mayer, Alison Krauss, J.J. Cale and a dozen others are on the bill. (Proceeds will go to Clapton’s Crossroads Centre in Antigua.) And since he’ll already be in town, there’s a good chance the legendary guitarist might hit Chicago blues clubs (such as Guy’s Legends downtown) during the week leading up to the fest.”I can’t imagine I’d have an excuse not to go,” he says.

Two restless hearts find tranquility at the crossroad of love.

Al’s comments of 4/27 are way off the mark! The Crossroads Centre is for drug/alcohol treatment of native men from Antigua. My husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on the island (and saved like crazy to get there), but did not see the centre. These men have small chances of work at the few resorts on the island. There is much more work for the women as maids. These people, originally from Africa, brought in by mainly the English, are raised from childhood, sucking on sugar cane stalks as a treat. Sugar eats teeth! Many are completely toothless, or with only molars. What a huge hit for their self esteem! The very lucky ones may have one of two steel teeth sticking strait out from the upper gum area. The men need help, from generation after generation of genetic predisposition to alcoholism/drugs. A product of sugar cane, local rum is cheap, again, this product created on the sugar cane plantations of the colonials. It is completely tragic! Eric Clapton has, as everyone is aware, struggled with dependencies, and sees the vital need to help these underprivileged natives of the island. We are thrilled to be able to go to the Crossroads Guitar Fest in July, and have seen him often. My husband has also struggled with the heritary disease of alcolism; has been through treatment twice. Survivors see the light of this beautiful gift Eric Clapton has created for the men of the island. Thanks, Eric for sharing your awesome gifts with other accomplihed guitarists, and turning it into a much needed fundraiser. Awesome Festival this time around!!!!

As much as I love the music, I refuse to spend my money on a fundraiser that benefits a center that only the rich and famous can afford. Why should I spend my hard eaned bucks for those that already have more than enough money

Saw EC in Connecticut…my 8th or 9th EC concert…hopefully not the last. Mr. Clapton inspired me to play and to listen to the “old masters” of blues and to discover the new ones…thank you Eric for your musicianship and musical ethic…that’s why you’re respected by your peers.

I have been buying EC’s music since 1967, what I’d like to hear is EC playing at Buddy Guy’s Legends Club! Playing with Buddy guy, where can I buy the CD?
A Blind Faith gathering? I’m all for it. Tip of the week: Listen to Ginger Baker play them drums on the Wheels of Fire CD, the song, TOAD.

Aussie John | 3/30/2007, 8:59 pm EST

How about Willie or Nathan sitting in on bass and Ginger on drums? Now that would be a reunion.

And if they’re going to play Presence of the Lord, EC please reprise that lead break from the original. Awesome!

julie | 3/26/2007, 10:49 am EST

no, it’s,”Oh, my….GOD!” playing the blues with Winwood would be awesome to see. Imagine him in some dark Chicago club some weeknight, y’know, 30 people or whatever. Current tour ends next week–plays Moline, just south of Chicago Tues 4/3. It’s an awesome show with those Dominoes tunes!

Marky | 3/23/2007, 9:52 am EST
