English Beat-Like Band Joins INXS-Ish Act, Ozzfest Bands Announced, SXSW Never Stops

3/21/07, 2:56 pm EST

English Beat

  • In what has to be the most fury-inspiring tour ever, the fake INXS and a supposedly reunited version of the English Beat, which is composed of ONE original member, vocalist/guitarist Dave Wakeling, are reportedly touring together for a few British dates. We would like to turn these bands attention to our handy guide, Rolling Stone’s Rules for the Fair Use of Important Band Names, which we feel will best communicate our feelings on this.
  • When the news broke that this year’s Ozzfest would be free, we wondered which bands would be willing to forgo their usual rates and perform at the event. The answer: Lamb of God, Hatebreed, and Lordi, apparently. The bands have all confirmed they will participate in Ozzfest 2007.
  • Book your hotel for SXSW 2008 today! The festival may have just ended, but the dates for next year’s event — March 12 – 16 — have apparently already been announced. Insanity.
  • We can’t decide how we feel about the news that there will be a Jeff Buckley greatest hits compilation. On the one hand it’s like Grace is all you really need. It’s his only real studio album, it’s perfect, untouchable. But there is a handful of other worthy Buckley material culled from live performances and from the unfinished My Sweetheart the Drunk album. So perhaps it would be nice to hear those on one album? Still, someday we’ll have to stop mining this man’s fragile, woefully short life for more pieces of him and just be grateful for what we got.

I’m sure the real INXS would have liked to tour, but the original lead singer (Michael Hutchence) is currently dirt-napping.

If you feel that way about Jeff Buckley, then please tell that to the people that keep making Tupac CDs! That man couldn’t have been that proliferate!

The new compilation, as well as the DVD release of ‘Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley’, the documentary based on the singer – are both being released on May 22 – to coincide with the 10th Anniversary of the death of Jeff Buckley.

INXS doesn’t have Michael Hutchence anymore (obviously), and everybody’s seen how mediocre they are with the new guy. English Beat is just Dave Wakeling and a band of guys he’s been playing with for a few years. I saw them last year on a club tour – they were okay, but hardly great. How is this “fury-inspiring?” Maybe we should be furious that they’re stomping on the legacies of their past bands?

As for Jeff Buckley, I’ve heard of bands coming out with a “best-of” CD with only two studio albums (Fine Young Cannibals, anyone?), but one? I agree, “Grace” was brilliant, but let him rest.

Tired of It | 3/21/2007, 6:57 pm EST

Give it a rest regarding INXS. Tell it to the fans that continue to flock to the shows that INXS is mediocre. Open your freaking mind and you might be pleasantly surprised. They are now my all time favorite live act and that is with the new guy (JD Fortune = new guy)

Five people shouldn’t have to give up their lives and their band to honor a totally selfish act. Fuck that and rock on INXS.

Anxiously awaiting a new album and a return of INXS to North America to tour.

I predict
OzzFest will be a disaster. WHile free looks good for the music fan, it just means ANYONE can go….and you don’t necessarily want just ANYONE with nothing better to do to show up.
Concerts are better when it is attended by vested fans.

Richard | 3/22/2007, 1:01 am EST

From what I understand – it will be a process to get Ozzfest tickets (primarily an internet process) – so I think that narrows it down to the kind of fans who “typically” show up for a free concert.

They won’t be able to literally walk up to the door and walk in, which is a good thing.

That would certainly be a recipe for disaster.

I’m assuming Black Label Society will open the main stage?

Ozzy
Lamb Of God
Lordi
Black Label Society

plus..Alice Cooper, Down, Mastodon.

left out that you can pick up a copy of Marty Casey & Lovehammers CD at various stores and it can be downloaded from itunes along with some of their older stuff in its entirety..No excuses.. It is just too easy to welcome the best rock band out there into your life. http://www.lovehammers.com Thanks again..

Get over yourself RS! INXS is as real as any band out there (and one of the best live-not that RS cares about details and facts) and has every right to continue on with their lives. If you don’t like their music, fine, but don’t be so pompous, ignorant and dismissive toward them simply because they’ve chosen to continue on with their lives (after a more than respectful 9 years without recording), doing what they are passionate about – music. They didn’t kick Hutchence out of the band, he chose to kill himself so why should they have to continue to suffer. There was only one Hutch and he was amazing, but life continues and JD Fortune came into an impossible situation faced with narrow-mindedness like that put forth by RS, and has immediately made his own impressive mark on the band. Hundreds of thousands of fans around the world have deservingly embraced their return and I too can’t wait for the next album.

Michael Hutchence was an amazing frontman/singer/songwriter…t he world is dimmer without him. As much as every INXS fan would want him here, he’s not, he’s gone. He wasn’t the sole creative force in the band, he was one of six…after all they were a band not a solo act. And Andrew Farriss was/is the main creative force behind INXS and always was. I for one was a fan of INXS then and continue to be one today. I am glad that the other 5 men found a way to move on and continue with their lives after the tragic loss of their friend and brother.
I have had it with people putting them down for living their lives and doing what they love…instead of celebrating their courage and tenacity and their music. Forget about what was and go see what is live….I am sure they will not dissappoint!
And if you aren’t a fan and you don’t want to go see them….then stop talking about it!!

only4JD | 3/30/2007, 11:09 pm EST

I loved INXS when I first heard of them in the 1980’s. I went to see them in concert and thought they were the best live band I ever saw. I cried when I heard that Michael was dead. I cried tears of joy when I was able to see the new INXS with JD Fortune as a member in February of 2006. They are not FAKE. They are still the best live band! Before you diss them, you should actually get off your lazy rear end and go to a show. Watch the audience reaction. Listen to the music, and maybe you’ll actually learn what true talent is!

Jacqueline | 3/30/2007, 11:13 pm EST

I saw INXS twice last year, and they were fantastic. Open your mind and enjoy the music. They are a talented bunch of guys that put on a hell of a show.

Go, dance, sing, enjoy yourself.

Zinch | 4/15/2007, 8:33 pm EST

I don’t have as much of a problem with the fact that INXS replaced Hutchence as I do with the pathetic, pandering way they did it. Reality TV auditions? Now there’s some real artistic integrity! “Hey, mates! As long we’re looking for someone to replace Mike, we might as well do it on TV in front of a live audience who thinks all the singers are good, and get some much-needed publicity for our floundering band!”
