According to a new book, Dr. Dre: The Biography by writer Ronin Ro, Eminem’s color almost kept him from getting a record deal. Upon hearing demos from the Detroit-based rapper, Dr. Dre was sure he was black. But when the two met for the first time Em showed up all blonde and sunburnable, wearing a yellow track suit. “I thought he was Tweety Bird,” Dre allegedly cracked. Even after Dre and Eminem began working together, coming up with visionary stuff that would later become part of Em’s first album The Slim Shady EP, Dre apparently took flack from label cohorts for associating with a white rapper. Ro goes on to claim that the label’s general manager tried to talk Dre out of the decision to sign the admittedly not at all black rapper, saying: “Look, this guy is blond with blue eyes. What are you doing?” Needless to say, Dre’s rep reportedly described these claims as “an uninformed, speculative piece of nonsense.”
Whatever comments were or were not made were (obviously) ignored by Dre, but what if they hadn’t been? Do you think that Eminem would have found another road fame, fortune, and insane pop cultural influence?
