Did the World Almost Miss Eminem?

3/21/07, 4:40 pm EST

Dre Eminem

According to a new book, Dr. Dre: The Biography by writer Ronin Ro, Eminem’s color almost kept him from getting a record deal. Upon hearing demos from the Detroit-based rapper, Dr. Dre was sure he was black. But when the two met for the first time Em showed up all blonde and sunburnable, wearing a yellow track suit. “I thought he was Tweety Bird,” Dre allegedly cracked. Even after Dre and Eminem began working together, coming up with visionary stuff that would later become part of Em’s first album The Slim Shady EP, Dre apparently took flack from label cohorts for associating with a white rapper. Ro goes on to claim that the label’s general manager tried to talk Dre out of the decision to sign the admittedly not at all black rapper, saying: “Look, this guy is blond with blue eyes. What are you doing?” Needless to say, Dre’s rep reportedly described these claims as “an uninformed, speculative piece of nonsense.”

Whatever comments were or were not made were (obviously) ignored by Dre, but what if they hadn’t been? Do you think that Eminem would have found another road fame, fortune, and insane pop cultural influence?

insane pop culture influence? how?
oh don’t get me wrong, he’s a tremendously talented rapper and the most popular based on record sales, but what has eminem done that is different than any other rapper except be white? and if that is supposed to be enough to break the color barrier and finally unleash a torrent of other successful, talented white rappers, where are they? who can say they’ve been influenced by eminem?
it’s been eight years. eight years after elvis (who eminem is frequently comapred to) became an icon playing ‘black’ music you already had jerry lee lewis, buddy holly, ronnie hawkins, plus almost every british invasion band following the king’s footsteps (and i’m not even a huge elvis fan).
marshall mathers had a couple big hits, but by the time of ‘encore’ his hating on mom and rapping about vicodin got kind of old. here’s hoping he brings something completely new to the table in the upcoming year or two.

Well, at least Dr. Dre isn’t a racist. He stepped up and did the right thing, he has a brain and everybody will hate him for it. Isn’t life wonderful?

Chele Belle | 3/21/2007, 7:44 pm EST

Yeah….he don’t see no color…other than GREEN.
Good for him for having such
vision. WOW.

It seems like in a predominantly black music genre, there is no need to worry about “affirmative action.” Dr. Dre is only one of a few people in rap who are not racist. And guess which racial group is the predominant consumer for the rap industry? If you don’t like this statement, chances are you support affirmative action and or are a racist.

Obviosuly he didnt make a wrong decision. Yes Eminem is multi talented…a lot of people are. The onlt thing is that not too many people either persue or get an opprortunity like he did.

Dang | 3/21/2007, 8:26 pm EST

When I first saw Dre in the Em video My Name Is, I thought he had fallen off. This was before he came back with the Chronic 2001. But obviously I was wrong.

I think Eminem is talented enough that he would have succeeded w/o Dre. I’m sure it would not have been as quick, even if he worked with any of the other super producers at the time. I wonder if he would be as big as he is now. And if he would have taken up producing.

Em does seem to be running out of things to rap about. He’s not beefing with anyone, and a bit tired of rapping about Kim. I loved Encore, but there were too many filler tracks about nothing.

yeaaaaaaaastan | 3/21/2007, 10:35 pm EST

a world without eminem…. oh no. I think it would be worse to have a world without AIDS than a world without eminem.

criminal | 3/21/2007, 10:42 pm EST

em is the greatest rapper of all time white or black two words: lyrical genius

thomas | 3/21/2007, 10:54 pm EST

Liana | 3/21/2007, 11:33 pm EST

thats so racist…and stupid…not like i listen to him anyway… but whats the big deal? i mean is hair is dyed and the sunburn thing is a beach thing, completely awesome… eh but what ever floats their boats….

DanInToledo | 3/21/2007, 11:36 pm EST

firt of all ytou complete idiots, the most talented … best of all time….etc etc is and always will be Tupac. most of eminems music sounds the same. some of it gets deep, he is very good at spittin a ryhme, but as talented as Tupac as a lyracist….shut up.

cmon! | 3/22/2007, 7:13 am EST

Em would’ve been out there whether with or without Dre’s help..
maybe not as successful as he is now, not sucha star, sellin millions (coz u also got the prodction to his records) but he would’ve been up there in the underground world, much respected.. i think he would’ve had a career like ppl such as Black Moon (or any other of the boot camp click for that matter), Talib…
without him, we would’ve lost a genious! n i stand by this statement! when i 1st listened to his stuff, i was a rock fan.. he made me listen to rap!! he did! he made me look at dre/tupac/busta/kanye/redman/m eth/missy/boot camp/jay/ or whatever else..
i’ll never forget 1st impression when i hear the Slim Shady lp.. i went CRAZY!!! and my thought swere like: what/who the hell is this, that’s plain insane stuff, he’s as big as Jim Morrison, Freddy Mercury or Axl Rose.. he’s a guy that just hits u in the guts n leaves u breathless..
that’s what i think..

Steve | 3/22/2007, 8:53 am EST

Nothing against em, but I don’t think he would have made it, no.

Zakk | 3/22/2007, 9:36 am EST

Who’s Eminem?

Chuck | 3/22/2007, 9:50 am EST

I could not agree more with the previous poster who stated that Eminem is as big as Axl Rose.

As far as the question of whether or not Eminem would have succeeded without Dre’s help…..who the hell knows? Maybe, maybe not.

DeQuan | 3/22/2007, 10:01 am EST

Without Dre, he would have been underground. White rappers still had the stain of Vanilla Ice on them. Em, with Dre’s help, cleaned that crap up.

some earthling | 3/22/2007, 11:02 am EST

Eminem is the Jackie Robinson of Rap music. NOT!!! Eminem sucks. Graphic songs about murdering the mother of his child. Yeah, that’s genius. If he were black he’d be just another rapper. The only thing he did was be white. Eminem sucks! Losers.

Ne-Gro | 3/22/2007, 11:09 am EST

Crackers can’t rap.

NYC Nate | 3/22/2007, 11:41 am EST

YES!!! It’s SO GOOD to see that reverse racism is alive and well and, apparently, socially acceptable!!

Loyalist of the Savage Nation | 3/22/2007, 11:43 am EST

African-Americans are capable of racism as well.

Mike D to My Dismay | 3/22/2007, 12:04 pm EST

Hi all you guys! I’m thinking of having a party at my house. Would you like to come? I will play music, but nothing that will offend you. I have lots of hungry man dinners (hope you’ll like these). We can also watch a movie, like Forest Gump. I really like this movie, it’s good. Oh, I Love You

Spaceboy | 3/22/2007, 12:59 pm EST

i dont think he would have been discovered if not for Dre…not that many producers have skins on the wall and has an eye for talent like Dre.

NYC Nate | 3/22/2007, 3:08 pm EST

That’s what I was saying when I mentioned ‘reverse racism’ – racism moving from black to white…I see it everyday on every block I walk down. Sweet shit, right?

Mike L | 3/22/2007, 4:54 pm EST

It’s weird that “Dre’s rep” would insult the book–which I’ve read– when Dre himself told this story in an interview. The story and book for that matter is showing some of the positive things about Dre for a change, instead of all the drama on message boards all over the web. I wonder if this is really Dre speaking through someone else, or whether its a well intention yes man trying to speak for him, as a few supposedly did when rejecting all of DJ Premiers beats for Rakims album.

jemz kennedy | 3/24/2007, 2:13 am EST

most people fink dat eminem wouldnt of made it as a rapper but there wroung if u accually sat down and listened 2 him hes a lyrical genius hes one of da only rappers dat can make u laugh and at da same tine make u cry and he dont care wot people fink of him yeh hes had problems but so does everyone if people just let him chill maybe it wouldnt of been so bad ive just got full respect for him and its a shame hes not rappin no more but a person like em cant stay quiet for long he will be back !
