Amy Winehouse Brings Her Loutish, R&B Charm Stateside

With last week’s U.S. release of British soul sensation Amy Winehouse’s second album Back in Black, Winehouse announced her arrival on the American scene. Now that the album has debuted at an extremely impressive Number Seven on the charts (it sold 50,888 copies in its first week) apparently this debauched, brilliant train wreck of a soul diva is here to stay. The singer, who appears in the new issue of Rolling Stone as one of the ten artists to watch, is one of our favorite new faces. Watch her video for ridiculously brash single “Rehab,” then add to (or debate if you dare) our list of three reasons Amy Winehouse is awesome.

  • Won’t be bullied into pretending she doesn’t have an eating disorder. It’s not like we condone her illness, but no good can come from denying it’s existence Lohan/Richie style.
  • Shows up to sing “Beat It” with Charlotte Church (watch it here,) is so wasted she can hardly move her lips, still manages to outperform the child star.
  • Uses her hair as armor, she apparently can’t feel stage-ready unless it’s all piled on top of her head, go-go-goth style.

bhupi: she’s brilliant because can sing like augillera without being a pop-sensation piece of shit, she writes her own music, and the lryics aren’t cliche claptrap about how supposedly “independent” women of the 21st century are frustrated by their innatentive boyfriends and club-creeps who only want to (egregiously?!) fuck their pantyless pussies . And by all accounts most people following music bemoan her train-wreck status; yet they admire the fact that she doesn’t have some PR asshole educated in the north-east (or, I guess in her case, LSE) to have her denying it all while it eats her soul (a la Britney Spears, Hilton, Richie, etc). In one sentence: she’s not a waste of talent pop-star but an ARTIST. I wish I knew you so I could cockslap you on the forehead for comparing her to Anna Nicole “all-I-ever-did-in-my-life-was -fuck-an-old-wrinkled-ball-bil lionaire-asshole-to-get-famous -and-piss-it-away-on-stripper- heels-and-conflicting-prescrip tion-drugs” Smith. As Jim Rome would say - I’m out.

A refreshign true talent. And don’t forget: She’s got jazz chops well before her foray into R&B. And who cares what she looks like — she’s a brilliant voclaist & musician. Hope she paces herself…it’d be a tragedy if she burns out.

She’ll be dead by the age of 30. I don’t see why all the hype. Why is she brilliant? Because she is a train wreck? Is this the new Anna Nicole???

All praise to the great god Motown! With Amy Winehouse, musical, solid-block rock is back.

Nice song, but it’s a shame she’s trying to look like PJ Harvey and not Mariah Carey. I’ve seen pictures of her when she was “bigger” and she wears her weight very well.
