met with our own Pete Maiden and Jenny Eliscu before his riveting late-night set in Austin this weekend. Well, what you saw was just a taste! Watch now to see the full interview.

You’ll see Iggy wax on about playing with the Stooges again, reveal what it’s like to be mislabeled “classic rock” and get real about how it feels to compete with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Iggy is seriously one of those guys you can’t really say just one thing about, except that he’s always carried undertones that he’s about rock; he doesn’t like “punk” or any other label.

50 years ago the guy was a black-haired kid rebel playing with the first kind of distortion around: an electric shaver on a mic.

He’s had a lot of drug and image problems, and yeah, in 50 years I bet he’s tried using a few riffs and sound from other artists, but in the end, there’s only so many ways you can play an octave.
He’s even needed the pot of gold money from time to time.

50 years, I think any of us would.

But not having it for so long seems to have really given this guy a chance to be sagely.
He’s still here, still the godfather of heavy metal rock, and he’s still preaching the good word that music should always be about music, and…
If you happen to be paid well doing what you love to be real about, that’s good too.

Love ya man, I’d like to think a lot of us will feel the impending loss as much as some did the day Ray Charles left us only a few years ago.

Whatever. “I’m Bored.”

When it comes to Iggy, I’m as devoted as one can get. However, it astounds me that the Iggy who can really turn a phrase such as he wrote in this 1994 letter: “I hope to make a living shining universe of rockingness become manifest, & not some half-hearted schlocko yawn” is the same Iggy who penned lyrics for “The Weirdness”. I get the sense that his latest work with the Stooges was done under the gun; a race against time if you will…
No matter, his live shows will never be called “No Fun”.

I love Iggy even though “The Weirdness” didn’t live up to my expectations. But, as he said, Rock and Roll is young, and Iggy is indestructible.

OMG a side of Iggy I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!!!

Whatever, this interview was nothing special. It’s not like he’s going to be rolling in broken glass on an interview couch. Which would ALSO be a side of Iggy we’ve seen before.

I like Iggy and I liked (the interview (for the most part), however who was he talking about when he mentioned artists pillaging hooks and riffs? Let’s be honest, the new release is mediocre at best. For some reason he’s considered someone who’s totally authentic, never compromised or sold out- which is bullshit. I’m not referring to the songs in commercials. Those songs are good songs. He’s definitely compromised trying to reach a bigger audience with some of his releases (blah blah blah and instinct spring to mind). The thing is, those releases never sold enough for him to get tagged with a sell out. The intention was there for sure. No different than Aerosmith in that sense. For him to be pious about bands stealing and having good legal representation is kinda lame. He’s tried it himself, it just didn’t pay off with a pot of gold.

Iggy’s cool. God bless ‘em.

Helvis | 3/21/2007, 7:40 am EST

theworldsforgottenboy | 3/20/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Paul | 3/20/2007, 4:34 pm EST

Did anyone see the empty bottle of wine? I think Iggy was gettin’ drunk, but everything he said makes sense.

iggy pop is an extremely intelligent guy. just watch that video. and buy ‘the weirdness’. it’s a great record. you won’t be disappointed.

THX-1138 | 3/20/2007, 1:20 pm EST

The thing I love about Iggy Pop is the fact that while he’s on stage in his element, he a fucking demon, but once he’s off stage engaged in conversation he comes off as a very friendly, articulate, intelligent person. The same can be said for Patti Smith.

So….I’ll just come out and say it: Punk Sucks. Sex Pistols? Sucked. And last but not least: Kurt Cobain was horrid on the guitar. Thanks RollingStone!

theworldsforgottenboy | 3/20/2007, 11:37 am EST

Iggy… Iggy…Iggy…

I love you like a long lost insane uncle but The Weirdness is awful…. What happened to you after Zombie Birdhouse?? Did you just run out of good ideas???

I will still be there to see you in Seattle… but really only for the Ashetons and the old stuff.

Please find a better producer for the next cd… maybe Deniz Tek or James Williamson??? More louder guitars and more Ron solos!!!!

Please learn how to retap at least a bit of that vocal energy and have someone veto the crappy lyrics.

I hope the Ashetons each clear a few million on this tour as they are overdue and underappreciated.

You should give them all the money….they at least did some work on the recording.
