Weekend Rock List: Favorite Songs by Beatles Not as the Beatles

3/16/07, 5:40 pm EST

The BeatlesThis has been an intense week in Beatledom. Between the Starbucks rumors, the ongoing Heather Mills drama, the Lennon sons acting like brothers, and the continued saga of the Beatles mp3s, the Fab Four from Liverpool won’t get out of our brains.

Note: The task is favorite, not “best.”

  • “Jealous Guy” – John Lennon
  • “Too Many People” – Paul McCartney
  • “What Is Life” – George Harrison
  • “Gimme Some Truth” – John Lennon
  • “It Don’t Come Easy” – Ringo Starr

Who doesn’t include Imagine in the long long list of Lennon’s amazing songs. The man never had a bad song, but that was his crowning moment in his inspiring career.

mdmelec | 4/2/2007, 8:36 pm EST

Pual- Hi, Hi, Hi and Give Ireland Back to the Irish. Both were banned as protest and drug influencing songs.

Ally | 4/2/2007, 4:26 pm EST

John - Imagine
John - Instant Karma!
Paul - Maybe I’m Amazed
George My Sweet Lord
Ringo- It don’t come easy

sureenough | 3/31/2007, 8:21 pm EST

John: Instant Karma. I Found Out -though he really hadn’t. Oh My Love.
Paul: Junk. Dress Me Up Like A Robber. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. Tug of War (that would be my pick for most underrated album by a post-Peatles Beatle).
George: Behind That Locked Door. I’d Have You Anytime. Run of the Mill. Art of Dying. Handle Me With Care.
Ringo: Photograph. Back Off Boogaloo - it’s just fun.
Least favorites:
John: Imagine - yea, just try to imagine Yoko with no possessions( I wonder if you can?).
Paul: My Love (”Woe woewoe woe”).

D.J.Brian Flash | 3/19/2007, 10:19 am EST

The best solo Beatle track is “It dont come easy”.George is backing Ringo on it.

Soft Hearted Hannah was a track on “George Harrison”…how does that make it LOST?
as time goes by, all their solo stuff sounds sweeter and sweeter, doncha think?

myspace.com/15keys | 3/19/2007, 8:25 am EST

Ringo- Early 1970 (Moving tribute to the other 3), Photograph (Best Harrison/Starkey Collaboration)

George- Soft Hearted Hannah (Lost track that would’ve remaimed lost if not for Dark Horse Reissues!) When We Was Fab (Great introspective look at his own past)

Paul- My Brave Face (Track only made great cause he finally had a sarcastic foil like John again in the form of Elvis Costello) Spies Like Us (Im kind of joking but it was Paul’s last top 10 US single)

John- How Do You Sleep? (How Pissed was John at Paul right after the Beatles? Listen to the song and you will know) Beautiful Boy (As scathing as John could be in such song as How Do You Sleep he could still be sweet and endearing to his son)

John-

Will | 3/19/2007, 7:36 am EST

John - “Watching The Wheels”, “Jealous Guy”, “Hold On”, “Oh Yoko”

Paul - “Maybe I’m Amazed”, “Friends to Go”, “Jenny Wren”, “Band on the Run”

George - “When We Were Fab”, “My Sweet Lord”, “Got My Mind Set On You”, “All Things Must Pass”

Ringo - “Don’t Come Easy”, “Weight of The World”, “I’m The Greatest”

Basically, buy Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass, and Chaos & Creation in the Backyard - there are probably about 17 great potential cd mixes right there.

Joe Puma | 3/19/2007, 2:39 am EST

Working Class Hero
How Do You Sleep?
I Don’t Want to Be a Soldier

MACCA

Photograph

Krystof | 3/18/2007, 6:50 pm EST

John Lennon- Mother
John Lennon- God
John Lennon- Working Class Hero…you know what, pretty every song on Plastic Ono Band is a classic in my mind

bag,SR.(tot) | 3/18/2007, 6:07 pm EST

it’s too bad this didn’t become more interesting…compared to the ACTUAL BEATLES recordings, hardly anybody bought the solo stuff. Almost all of the choices go in descending order from JOHN (the god of the band)- to PAUL (I’ve got more radio than you)- to GEORGE (my star continues to rise)- to Ringo(he had that one song, right?) …
and then of course you have the incessant music buffs like myself who delve into all the nooks and crannies and just have to say something original or use a crowbar to pry a memory from some long lost episode of BEATLES(the multi-media memory).
My take on the whole thing is it’s all connected, and going to see Sean is like going to a picnic with the kids. I put down my judges robe and gavel and just accept the vibrations…and the music. and the ART.
The BEATLES have inspired countless people to be BETTER people, and I think that goes for something.
This is probably an ego-driven thing, but I would really be pleased if everyone reading this would search out a strange (unkown to them) BEATLES-related CD or book and try to Re-Imagine the gospel according to Liverpool.

alfredo | 3/18/2007, 4:41 pm EST

lennon- imagine, instant karma

mccartney- band on the run, jet

harrison- my sweet lord

NotMozart | 3/18/2007, 11:36 am EST

oh, and that Lennon recording of “I’m Losing You” with Cheap Trick off the box set, damn that version is so much better than the released one…

NotMozart | 3/18/2007, 11:33 am EST

Pretty much all of George’s “All Things Must Pass”, since most of it was written during the Beatles period and passed on by John and Paul (plus Ringo drums quite a bit and Klaus plays a lot of bass–and Badfinger and Clapton are on the “Apple Jam” section).

Ringo’s “Ringo!” is almost a Beatles reunion, with 3/4 playing on a couple songs and all four contributing to the record (John and George still wouldn’t play with Paul at the time).

Also, both are the best records of the respective artist’s solo careers.

nurserock1 | 3/18/2007, 6:34 am EST

For those that don’t know George…go out and buy the All things must pass disc…
Lennon- Watching the wheels, Nobody told me
McCartney-Jet, Band on the run (always loved that acoustic guitar sound)
Harrison-Beware of Darkness, Apple Scruffs, What is life, Isn’t it a pity
Ringo-Weight of the world, Photograph

jiminos | 3/18/2007, 4:32 am EST

Lennon - “Well, baby please don’t go” with the Elephants Memory Band - “beautiful boy” - “yer blues” with the original Plastic Ono Band

Harrison - all of side 3 of ATMP, all of cloud nine and brainwashed

Starr - “it don’t come easy”

McCartney - “jet”

Tytti | 3/18/2007, 4:13 am EST

it’s sort of Stealers Wheel meets Harry Georgeson.

SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE please give a trophy to NEIL INNES for all of those incredible alternate-BEATLES-universe songs presented by the RUTLES.

Paul Should do “DoubleBack Alley”.
