Macca Gets Caffeinated? PLUS: Arctic Monkeys Test Their Mettle and More

3/14/07, 9:33 am EST

paul mccartney

  • You may be able to get the new Paul McCartney album with your triple-shot, low-fat, no-whip, mocha Frappuccino.
  • Will the Arctic Monkeys suffer sophomore slump? Their new video aired this morning. Or you can see them on tour.
  • Christina Aguliera will finally make her acting debut with an appearance on CSI. Err, by debut, we’re not counting those Mickey Mouse Club years.
  • This is the end: Matchbook Romance and The Early November both announce they’re dunzo.
  • Turns out that Snoop Dogg-getting-arrested-in-Sweden news was erroneous (Blame CNN, not us). Now, Snoop and Diddy can tour the European countryside together harmoniously.
  • Does anybody have a Lily Allen rumor they want to test out? Apparently, she’ll respond to all of them. This time: She’s not a lesbian.
  • Radiohead wants you to check out the links on the left side of the page here. We recommend you obey. They’re smarter than you.

Hobie Baker | 3/14/2007, 10:09 am EST

Holy crap! Paul looks just like Angela Lansbury!

Suddenly I feel an overwhelming urge to play a game of solitaire…

Betta Recognize | 3/14/2007, 10:15 am EST

Well somebody has to pay for that freeloading parapalegic ex of his $19,000 dollar stippen a day! If only wacko-jacko wouldn’t of outbid him for the lennon/mccartney catalog in the 80’s…say say say!

Juan | 3/14/2007, 10:16 am EST

Bold move Paul ! The music industry, specially the record companies are doomed. He needs a better way to get his music to the fans.

Andy | 3/14/2007, 10:17 am EST

Sophomore slump? The Arctic Monkeys won’t even survive their FRESHMAN slump.

There has seldom been a more overrated album. The Arctic Monkeys are a 2nd-rate high school garage act. They suck.

But, Rolling Stone loves them. What else do you expect from a magazine that also loves Bright Eyes and Ryan Adams???

Jody Rosen has written an excellent article for Slate.com about Arcade Fire.

This paragraph doesn’t specifically mention Arcade Fire, but is the best thing I have read about rock music lately.

“There is a strategic logic behind the new rock bombast. Rock long ago ceded the zeitgeist to hip-hop and R & B and pop, which command the radio airwaves, the record sales, and, in the case of rap, the outlaw glamour that once belonged to rock. One of the last things a rocker can do that a rapper or pop diva can’t is make an almighty racket. Hip-hop producers have lately fashioned their own kind of symphonic grandeur, but their brittle digital edifices are no match for the walls of sound a rock band can erect. Even a human storm system like BeyoncĂ©, harnessing the power of a sampled drum army, simply can’t roar like a bunch of weedy kids armed with distortion pedals and a Marshall stack. In the hip-hop era, a humongous sound may be the best way left for a rock band to get the world to sit up and take notice.”

Who cares where the music is sold? I’m surprised anyone would want to buy a physical CD anyway. And it’s not Starbucks fault; Paul just needs some money after that divorce payment.

libertine | 3/14/2007, 10:29 am EST

FYI, that 2pm is 9am RS time. The video for “Brianstorm” (Despite what NME wants to call it today) is already up.

Kristian | 3/14/2007, 10:36 am EST

Sorry Paul, it seems you’ve turned into a moneymaking machine.. First it was LOVE, the CD with “remixed” editions of the classic hits (ps. sounded the same as always), and now this! Your streetcred curve is going the wrong way!well, being the oldest man alive , I guess the streetcred could be worse..

pskidmore | 3/14/2007, 11:02 am EST

I just hope Arctic Monkey’s next CD is as good as their first!

abandonedstation | 3/14/2007, 11:48 am EST

‘an almighty racket’:
sounds like someone needs some ‘comets on fire’! (best heavy, zeppelin-influenced band since…zeppelin)

i think paul mccartney desparately wants the world to remember that he’s paul mccartney. it’s certainly not a money thing.

snoop was obviously mistaken for the other only black guy in sweden.

fixtheglitch | 3/14/2007, 11:49 am EST

I don’t see why Paul going on the Starbucks label would be considered selling out. After all, it’s just another record label. The music retailing landscape has changed dramatically since 2000 and now Apple and Starbucks are among the biggest music distributers around.

Spencer | 3/14/2007, 12:11 pm EST

It’s not selling out… it is just going to another record label. Capitol were treating this guy with disrespect so he parted ways. Nothing more to it. It’s all Capitol

vic dakota | 3/14/2007, 12:19 pm EST

I see no problem with it. 3 cheers for Sir Paul. The major labels, think who the heck thay are anyway. Paul should start up his own label again(once the dust settles from the big D.)& invest in the new unknow talent trying to break into the music business.

Adam | 3/14/2007, 12:37 pm EST

Exactly, vic dakota. McCartney & Co. (those other Beatles) found James Taylor and Badfinger, so let’s put a little faith in his abilties to sign good artists!

Buster C | 3/14/2007, 12:59 pm EST

I think Paul should have consulted Thom Yorke before he mad any musical moves.

me | 3/14/2007, 1:22 pm EST

I would hardly call switching record labels selling out. Maybe now there will be some good music on sale at Starbucks instead of random junk.

Paul rules.

The Stranger | 3/14/2007, 1:44 pm EST

The Artic Monkees….

the new single isn’t that bad. It doesn’t really have a chorus, but it gets by on surf rock guitars and attitude.

Really, the artic monkees were never that good at “rocking’.
they were much better when they sounded like a pop group.

I’m sure they’ll have a few songs as good as “Mardy Bum”, “Riot Van” and “A Certain Romance” were on the debut.

Timroc | 3/14/2007, 1:55 pm EST

And in the end, the luv you take, is equal to the luv….you make.

Good for SIR PAUL! | 3/14/2007, 2:04 pm EST

SCREW RS!
SCREW CAPITAL!

WHO IS RS TO CALL ANYONE A SELL OUT BTW?

DrJ | 3/14/2007, 2:21 pm EST

ummm…when exactly was Paul NOT a sellout?

Boner | 3/14/2007, 2:58 pm EST

Since when did Thom York, Al Gore, or any other of these bitches become experts in global warming? I would love to see them in a debate with a scientist who did the necessary years of research and actually knows what he’s talking about. Just because you have the right to cry about bullshit doesn’t mean that people will take you seriously. Even notoriously liberal news agencies are now reporting the fact that most legit scientists are laughing at Gore’s insane claims.

Justin | 3/14/2007, 3:28 pm EST

It is “Arctic Monkeys” not “Artic Monkeys”

Boner | 3/14/2007, 3:43 pm EST

What do RS and Fox News have in common?
They are both fair and balanced.

Boner | 3/14/2007, 3:58 pm EST

I told you censors I would make you work for your money.

Dr. Ralph | 3/14/2007, 4:00 pm EST

This is all that back-stabbing child molesting black turned white boy Michael Jackson’s fault. Sir Paul made the mistake of telling MJ how much he was going to bid on the Beatles catalog. Obviously the color change threw him off, but still this is not selling out! Hell he switched record labels! The Beatles never let any of their songs be used to sell toothpaste when they actually had control. Sell out indeed… wasn’t Panic! at the Disco on your February cover? It was on the one you delivered to my house… now THAT’S selling out!

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:33 pm EST

Watch my balls!

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:35 pm EST

Please!

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:41 pm EST

Hone da Bone

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Only 15 minutes left!

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:49 pm EST

10 minutes!

Boner | 3/14/2007, 4:53 pm EST

5 and counting!

Bob | 3/14/2007, 6:44 pm EST

It’s Paul McCartney, he can do what ever he wants

Bobo | 3/19/2007, 1:13 am EST

How tacky. Are the Beatles going to be re-issued by Pizza Hut next?
