First Time Ever: Watch the R&R Hall of Fame Inductions, Live

3/12/07, 11:35 am EST

R.E.M.Tonight marks one of our favorite nights of the year: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in NYC. For the first time in the show’s history, it will be broadcasted LIVE. Witness all the action tonight on VH1 Classic at 8:30pm, because we’re talking a proverbial powder keg of talent here. Jay-Z will be inducting Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. Velvet Revolver will be performing Van Halen classics (and will we get our first taste of a VH reunion?). Yes, Keith Richards will be there. And Eddie Vedder. And honorees R.E.M. We’re so excited, we’d just like to thank the geniuses behind Daylight Savings Time for pushing this massive concert an hour closer to happening.

Speaking of R.E.M.: Our favorite band from Athens, Georgia, will be joining us at our offices today. Don’t worry — we’ll be posting audio highlights from the conversation later today.

REM sucks…… too bad Edward won’t be there…. VH is the only thing worth watching……

Jon B. | 3/12/2007, 12:18 pm EST

Of course it’s your favorite night of the year, you people are so morbidly obsessed with the intangible concept of “Rock ‘n Roll” (which got old a decade ago) that you ignore so much amazing music that is being released. I’m not watching this program.

Classic Rock | 3/12/2007, 12:27 pm EST

Well… I’m pretty sure we won’t get our first taste of a Van Halen reunion (as awesome as that’d be). All the news sources have been saying that the Van Halen brothers won’t be there since Eddie’s in rehab, and Dave won’t be there since he isn’t being allowed to perform.
Although that last no-show is kind of stupid, I think; one of the google news sources said that the RnR Hall of Fame would have let Dave perform with Velvet Revolver. I guess he must’ve insisted on going up there alone. Typical Dave. *rolls eyes*

Brandon Hammill | 3/12/2007, 12:28 pm EST

I’m a big R.E.M. fan, more so with Van Halen. I can’t wait to see all the guys from Van Halen together in one room, that is, if Eddie’s there.
David & Sammy together should be interesting.

Monica C. | 3/12/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Kinda heartbreaking for the not-so-fortunate music lovers not to be able to enjoy this event…

long live youtube then…

pskidmore | 3/12/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Van Halen deserve it… Van Hagar…not so much!

Classic Rock | 3/12/2007, 1:06 pm EST

They “ignore so much amazing music that is being released?”

Where is this “amazing” music are you referring to, Jon B.? Wait, wait… I’m probably reading into your comment too much. “Amazing” can mean so many things. You might’ve meant the amazingly wide hole in the middle of everything James Blunt has ever made, where talent should be. Or perhaps the amazing amount of vomit one can produce when listening to a Fallout Boy song, for instance.

The past 10-15 years have been a virtual music wasteland.

jan(n) | 3/12/2007, 1:07 pm EST

actually there can’t be any badmouthing of it because wenner is one of the greying big cheeses behind the whole operation.

Lacks Access to Vh1 Classic | 3/12/2007, 1:21 pm EST

Will there be a live webcast anywhere?

John Cougar Mellencamp | 3/12/2007, 1:23 pm EST

A little dity about Dave and Sammy…

2 American kids doin’ the best they can…

David wants to be a porno star…

Sammy plays “Cant drive 55″ 78,322 times so far…

So let em’ rock

Let em’ roll

Let Eddie Van Halen eat an egg roll

Holdin’ on to “Christeen Sixteen” as long as KISS can…

St. Robinson | 3/12/2007, 1:28 pm EST

Note: the part in the link is “rockhall”, for some reason the second “l” was taken out when I posted.

Justine Batemen's dentist | 3/12/2007, 1:38 pm EST

Can’t wait to see Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony accept the award for Van Halen. How ironic. 2 guys treated like crap by Eddie. As a dentist, I’m not only apalled by Ed’s attitude, but I’m also apalled by his teeth.

Jackass | 3/12/2007, 1:52 pm EST

“Where is this “amazing” music are you referring to.

“The past 10-15 years have been a virtual music wasteland.”

Sorry, “Classic rock”, what we can’t think modern music is good?

And what the hell are you talking about there has not been good music in 10 to 15 years? Ever heard of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Eliott Smith, The Strokes, White Stripes,Beck,Rage Against the Machine, Cat Power…shall I go on? You need to go back to the old age home and take your meds you senile old bastard, and try to remember the good ol’ days when spandex, big hair, makeup and party anthems ruled the airwaves, who needs content, right?

Oliver Reed | 3/12/2007, 1:57 pm EST

Last I checked…Nirvana dude is dead. Beck rips off other people’s music and repeats “devils haircut” over and over. Never heard of Elliot Smith or The Strokes. Cat Power sounds like a Japanese animated cartoon that I don’t watch.

Karma | 3/12/2007, 2:07 pm EST

I can’t want to see Eddie Vedder induct REM and to see what songs they perform together. That should be sweet.

I’m not sure that it should be Jay-Z inducting Grandmaster Flash. Shouldn’t be Run DMC or someone like Big Daddy Kane? Hell, I think LL Cool Jay would of been a better choice.

In regards to VH. Karma! You kick out Sammy and Michael and now you’re in rehab ain’t that a bitch. VH best years were with Sammy. I believe the reason Sammy was kicked out was because of work ethnic. Let’s see Sammy three albums since being kicked out. VH 1. Hmmm… interesting. Unless VH brings back Michael they should just retire.

RetroPopZero | 3/12/2007, 2:12 pm EST

I won’t watch until ELO gets inducted.

Classic Rock | 3/12/2007, 2:17 pm EST

“Ever heard of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Eliott Smith, The Strokes, White Stripes,Beck,Rage Against the Machine, Cat Power?”

Most of them, yes.
Nirvana: Oh, he killed himself! What a tragic genius! If only he had ANY guitar prowess to go with all that angst!
Pearl Jam: I have 10. One good album. Whoopty doo.
The Strokes: I fell asleep after the 1st minute and a half of the blase and indistinct strumming they were trying to pass off as a riff.
The White Stripes: I almost laughed myself to death after listening to “Fell in Love with a Girl.” Sloppiness is driven to new heights! Oh, and someone teach Jack White how to sing; that turkey gobble impression he does gets old after a while.
Rage against the Machine: Mmm, what goes with metal better than tone deaf rap-shouting? Oh, right. Anything. I’d take the “Ricola” guy over that a-melodic hack.

Senile old bastard, huh? Gosh… I didn’t know that senility generally set in around 25. Way to stereotype music tastes, “whippersnapper.”

Sherry | 3/12/2007, 2:24 pm EST

ELO must be inducted – they rocked my world and I still listen to them. Amazing talent – Amazing songs – Still holds up. What’s up with the Hall?

Madonna | 3/12/2007, 2:39 pm EST

long live REM

REM SUX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 3/12/2007, 2:45 pm EST

GET KISS IN THE HALL NOT CRAP LIKE REM!

jungleland | 3/12/2007, 2:51 pm EST

There is lots of good stuff out there from the last 25 years, but how much deserves to be ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?

DEVO
KISS
Nirvana
REM
U2
Beck (maybe)
Radiohead
Guns N Roses

and finally give it to Alice Cooper.

They should give up yearly inductions after 1985.

Jackass | 3/12/2007, 2:54 pm EST

So what do you this is so great Clasic rock?

Classic Rock | 3/12/2007, 3:03 pm EST

“So what do you this is so great Clasic rock?”

I’m sure there’s a question in there somewhere… ah, you probably meant to write “think” instead of “this.”

I’m actually pretty generous, musically. Though I am partial to the 70’s, and some of the 80’s. Led Zeppelin, for instance. Although you do have a point; some of Zeppelin’s spandex-clad, contentless party anthems were a bit hard to sit through.

And I’m not saying the past 10-15 years has had ABSOLUTELY no good music… just that finding it is like looking for water in the desert.

Also, if you’re going to reference Seattle bands from the early 90’s, at least pick one with some real talent — Alice in Chains, or Soundgarden.

abandonedstation | 3/12/2007, 3:11 pm EST

hasn’t the rock and roll hall of fame lost all credibility thanks to their top 200 album list that included shania twain, enya, beyonce, and other dingleberries?

well, keef’s supposed to show up, so it can’t be all bad. must be an open bar.

hey RS, are wenner and stipe making out in the broom closet?
(cheap shot, yeah, but you put Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco on the cover)

hey KARMA! | 3/12/2007, 3:24 pm EST

KARMA does NOT exist!Nor does SANTA CLAUSE or GOD!

- sound bubble bursting -

GET SOME HEAVY METAL ! | 3/12/2007, 3:29 pm EST

YA PANSIES!

Jackass | 3/12/2007, 3:43 pm EST

I’ll give you Alice and chains, but soundgarden? they are ok, but better than Nirvana or Pearl Jam?
Led Zepplin is great, for the record I do love alot of 70’s & 80’s music myself, there is alot of clasic albums in that era. But to flat out say that the last 15 years has been bad for good music is taking it a bit too far.

Venezuelan Born | 3/12/2007, 3:51 pm EST

REM just doesn’t do it for me. I guess they deserve to be in, given the amount of albums sold, fan base, etc. But if we are picking bands that got their start in the 80’s…REM does not measure up to U2 (or Van Halen, Metallica, for that matter).

Robert | 3/12/2007, 4:08 pm EST

Naked Raygun > REM.

Classic Rock | 3/12/2007, 5:21 pm EST

“But to flat out say that the last 15 years has been bad for good music is taking it a bit too far.”

Music taste is, of course, subjective. In my own slanted view, I tend to focus less on the lyrical content of a song than on the music being played. My reason being that if I want to partake of ideas, theories, or philosophy, I’ll go read something. Music (so far as I’m concerned) is for listening to. Whatever the singer has to say should be of less importance than how well he/she sings it.

Take Van Halen, from the article above. During their years with David Lee Roth, they crafted a very distinct sound. Eddie wrote riffs that would have been enjoyable to listen to even without any singing, and his soloing was creative and original. They were also one of the few metal bands to harmonize their vocals. As such, I care less about their absurd and shallow lyrics and more about the fact that the music behind them was excellent.

On the other hand, Nirvana (to me) seemed to focus more on what Kurt Cobain had to say. I’ll admit they had one or two good riffs. However, I never cared for his voice, and his solos were almost always a simple reworking of the song’s main melody.

In terms of distinctiveness, I’ve found the past decade or so of music to be rather forgettable. Popular artists seem worried mainly about producing vocal hooks that are catchy for about two weeks than writing music that sounds like anything more than generic guitar strumming.

But that’s just me.

Bangers-N-Mash | 3/12/2007, 6:21 pm EST

What is it.. 20 or 25 years since your first album that it needs to be to get inducted. So people saying things like Beck or Elliot Smith… keep wishing and wishing and wishing.

Another note.. there’s plenty of older acts that the Rock Hall has looked over again and again… I think Alice Cooper was a good mention by a previous poster.

Lastly, anyone who says REM does not deserve to be in this is moronic. They did more for a boom in the college radio outlet than most any other bands did. Their influence is all over the indie stuff you hear nowadays. And if the Rock Hall is brave enough to induct REM this early… I’m pulling for Thruston Moore & Co. for next year.

Static Boy | 3/12/2007, 6:32 pm EST

Of all initialed bands, ELO belong in the hall before REM.

myspace.com/civilianiscool | 3/12/2007, 7:04 pm EST

wow, Classic Rock, ur an asshole. hahaha

THE Legend from Kokomo | 3/12/2007, 9:53 pm EST

Fuck Velvet Revolver and their rendition of Van Halen. If I was there I’d kick Scott Weiland’s skinny ass!!!

don at rock wi. | 3/12/2007, 10:48 pm EST

eddiie needs to look at who put him on the rock map !!! dave is the one !!! sammy part too !!!! V H ROCK & ROLL!!!!!

Eddie V.H.'s teeth | 3/12/2007, 11:09 pm EST

We are appalled by the comments of “Jason Bateman’s dentist”.

EVH | 3/12/2007, 11:29 pm EST

Eddie’s teeth? Give the guy a break. He had surgery 19 times or something in his mouth for cancer that he was dealing with over the last 5 years.

ken vail jr | 3/12/2007, 11:33 pm EST

i was 13 when i heard r.e.m.’s MURMUR Lp…and i love van halen and kiss equally…it’s one of the most brilliant pieces of music ever recorded…it opened my mind to different kinds of music. i was a bit cynical about grandmaster flash being inducted, but i have to say i enjoyed their performance…and the ronettes were great-a nice reproduction of the ‘wall of sound’….the van halen induction was obviously the biggest letdown…at least michael anthony and sammy hagar showed up.

Fyodor Dostoevsky | 3/12/2007, 11:43 pm EST

That was FUCKING AWESOME!!!!! To see my two rock icons Stipe and Vedder exchanging lines of Man on the Moon was INCREDIBLE!!!!! And how many times has Ed listened to Murmur, 1240? Ha! This was certainly worth watching for four hours. And then at the end with Michael and Patti sharing a mic! It was simply awesome. I’m so biased but I don’t care, that was fucking cool. I will never forget this one.

Justine Bateman's Dentist | 3/12/2007, 11:49 pm EST

Im Justine’s dentist, not her hack brother. Besides, if you can’t take a joke…why did you listen to Patty Smith sing? Power to the people mother f$#@%*!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Stipe | 3/12/2007, 11:51 pm EST

Everybody hurts…from hearing Patty Smith sing.

We Love the Legend of Kokomo | 3/12/2007, 11:53 pm EST

HE’s got balls and talent to match. Long live the King of Comedy!!!

ken vail jr | 3/13/2007, 12:16 am EST

funny how the first comment said REM is the only thing worth watching on the ceremony…that was by far the worst…i thought the ronettes were great-the band recreated the phil spector ‘WALL OF SOUND’ brilliantly…and patti smith was great-still full of fire and passion at the age of 60!

ken vail jr | 3/13/2007, 12:17 am EST

i meant van halen not r.e.m…it’s getting late this way my bad! I WAS really looking forward to van halen…velvet revolver seemed a bit ‘uninspired’ to me.

ken vail jr | 3/13/2007, 12:18 am EST

actually, REM’S set reminded me why they were such a great band back in their college-radio heyday….i have my words all crossed up tonite. it was a fun evening…nice to see it LIVE and UNEDITED. ok that’s all for now! lol

nurserock1 | 3/13/2007, 2:42 am EST

Good god…
Velvet Revolver was horrible!
That had to be the worst induction speech/performance in the history of the RRHOF

Atlanfan | 3/13/2007, 3:12 am EST

R.E.M. was amazing tonight! They and I both came of age in Athens. I was backpacking in Asia when “The One I Love” hit the world airwaves and in Berlin, front of the general admission crowd at a club, for the “Green” tour. I’ve seen ‘em at their best. Tonight was one of those times that makes me love music. Unlike poor Van Halen, which seems to be mired in its own hype, the guys in R.E.M. are real people … like the rest of us … nice guys … like most of us.

Jimmy Mountjoy | 3/13/2007, 6:36 am EST

As a devout follower of the gospel of guitar, according to Eddie Van Halen – I’ve never been so dissapointed in my entire life.

Mullet Man | 3/13/2007, 7:17 am EST

I am an authority on the way rednecks think, and “classic rock” is a close minded redneck idiot. Take that corporate rock attitude to billboard. REM and Nirvana are great, and Led Zep never had spandex. Metal does not equal “rock and roll hall of Fame”. You and “word up” are the reasons why the internet sucks for opinions. If it were up to you only white people would be glorified for anything. Here’s to Sonic Youth, Bad Brains, Television, Jane’s Addiction, and Nirvana for future inductions. And yes, Velvet Revolver performance and the rebroadcast of the Led Zep performance were painful to watch.

jungleland | 3/13/2007, 8:19 am EST

We waited 10 years for Van Halen to get it right (make up for the 1996 VMA’s disaster) and instead we got…..nothing.

Velvet Revolver had NO passion for VH, and their performance was horrible.

Sammy and Mike were humble and thanked the right people, but there was no STAR POWER. It was sad, like the rest of the guys had died or something….

The Worlds Most Dangerous Band is no VAN HALEN. They sounded like Musak.

How essential is ALEX VAN HALEN? The two (cover)bands performing had world class drummers who failed to lay down the VH drumbeat, nobody can do Alex like Alex (and I used to think he was just Ok)

Without DAVID LEE ROTH there was no swagger, no sex, nothing dark, scary, edgy or interesting.

Nobody expressed what the FANS think about this band.

I think I will write thier NEW induction speech later today, the one that DAVE should have followed.

This was their chance to get it right, what a shame…..

Karl | 3/14/2007, 10:46 am EST

The person I feel kinda bad for is Alex Van Halen. He’s a talented drummer, and I get the feeling that he won’t (or can’t) get out and play with anyone else until his brother gets his sh*t together. What a waste.

SCHLOCK AND POLE | 3/14/2007, 11:02 am EST

It’s a shame that the only tallent that was there was not being inducted (Vedder). Stipe was not singing well. Peter Buck was HAMMERED and should have not been playing, and he was out of tune for the first 2 songs. Where is the roadie? Then Buck threw his amp into the audience and hit someone. Shameful. Awful. This is the crap that rock and roll royalty is made of?

Patti Smyth: Could she ever sing? Put down the needle and pay attention. The definition of rode hard and put away wet. Awful.

The Ronettes? Can’t hit the notes anymore. All out of tune. Bad.

Mike and Sammy, Sammy just looked tired and needs a diet without tequilla, needs to loose about thirty pounds. Harmonies were not tight with Mike, who actually looked like he wanted to be there. Waste of time without any Van Halens on the stage. Sad.

Velvet Revolver had the impossible challenge of making Van Halen spirit appear form their performance. I love Slash, The performance was not bad, but who would pose just like Mick Jagger at the Rock and Roll Hal of fame, with Keith Richards in the house? What happened to Weiland? He used to be good when he was on drugs. Clean and a total poser. Too much L.A., not enough V.H.

The future of Rock and Roll is doomed if these are what we have to accomplish to get into the Hall. With this much suck to go around the room, Brittney will be in the Hall in no time at all. CORPORATE ROCK SUCKS!

Dr. Ralph | 3/14/2007, 1:32 pm EST

Classic Rock, I bow down to the genius that is yours. “Amazing amount of vomit one can produce while listening to a Fallout Boy song” says it all! Whatever happened to R&R?

Table 36 | 3/14/2007, 3:38 pm EST

Mr Schlock: Peter Buck was not “hammered.” I was there, and believe me, he was sober.

VH ONE | 3/14/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Velvet Revolver is pathetic, they looked and acted as if they didnt care give a damn (or maybe the music is beyond their rehealm). Scott Weiland is a “never hasbeen” and will never be a hasbeen. Its a shame, instead of completely screwing up a tribute to a band that is far superior to him and his talents, he and his band could have just turned down their only opportunity to be on worldwide TV and just stayed home. DLR should be ashamed of himself for not showing up, its too bad the Van Halen who brags about being for the fans will NEVER give them what they want.

Zorro | 3/14/2007, 8:58 pm EST

Sammy Hagar’s presence at the R&R hall of fame and getting rewarded for fucking up a real great band like VH is Crazy. the guy has no talent. here is an sample of the one and only hit he ever had, before Eddie VH’s great guitar playing was able to distract us from his so called singing… the song is called “55″, and I quote:
“Go on and write me up for 125
Post my face Wanted dead or alive
Take my license and all that jive I can’t drive 55
Oh yeah I CAN’T DRIVE 55 I CAN’T DRIVE 55 I CAN’T DRIVE 55 I CAN’T DRIVE 55″……..I rest my case…

Justin Bateman | 3/16/2007, 12:35 am EST

I am appalled by the comments of my sister’s dentist *hack*
