Low-budget local ads are often weird as hell, but few are as terrifying as this one for Don’s Guns of Indianapolis: “I don’t want to make any money, folks — I just love to rent guns! HA HA HA HA HA!”

Seems honest enough.

I’m from Indianapolis and some of my fondest childhood memories are hearing Big Don’s soothing words and joyous chuckle.

So what is to stop someone from renting the gun, shooting someone with it, and then returning it?

Here’s an idea for Don: Guns by mail! Kinda like Netflix but with guns. That way, I don’t even have to go to the store and if they don’t have a gun I want, it doesn’t matter! I can just have it mailed to me. Woohoo!

one would hope he has lawyers who write releases that cover his *ss on that front.
Bunk and Bo Bice | 3/9/2007, 4:13 pm EST
you dipsticks, he rents them to shoot in his own indoor range. you can’t take them out of the store.

I am from indy, and this guy has a history of being really lazy with background checks and whatnot. lots of guns used in crimes are traced back to his store.
as for renting and returning a gun after using it in a crime, well, that would be about the easiest way to get caught ever. you cleary don’t have a mind for crime pskidmore.
haha | 3/9/2007, 4:46 pm EST
oh, but the rental part is in store only anyway. he just sells guns to criminals, he would never rent them out to criminals.

Somebody check this man’s cellar for missing pets and old people.

HOPLOPHOBIA is a disease of the mind.
Little scared City people.
You idiots | 3/10/2007, 2:59 am EST
You stupid morons! The guns are to rent INSIDE his store. See there are things called a shooting range…wait…ignorance is bliss…
Karl | 3/10/2007, 11:19 am EST
No matter where you can point ‘em and shoot ‘em, that’s still pretty creepy.
Onski | 3/10/2007, 5:36 pm EST
I’m from Indy… this guy is a local legend. He’s been doing these ads for at least two decades, always in the exact same way. About as delightfully cheesy as the other old ad every Indy native remembers: “Why buy a car from Dave Mason Buick? ‘Cause ol’ Dave needs the money.”
jdubz | 3/10/2007, 6:00 pm EST
Awesome! I wish we had a place like that in Cincinnati! That guy is an off the charts whack-job! I love it! This is the best low budget local ad I’ve seen!

I grew up 30 miles from Indy and this guy is a hero! Machine guns are illegal to anyone not possessing a class III firearms license. SERIOUS background check and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (FEDS) can enter and search no warrant needed, ANYTIME! So the only reasonable alternative to those with no propensity to become a criminal and a jones for REAL firepower without becoming a card carrying member of Big Brother Inc. is to go see Don and shoot AT HIS RANGE! No, you can’t walk out with a rent-a-gun…idiots! If you want to kill someone you don’t want a rent-a-gun anyway, you want some one’s grandfathers .38 that was bought before Kennedy got shot and you could mail order any weapon of choice with no records involved… and preferably stolen.

Holy balls, that laugh at the end was wierd…
Canuck Pat | 3/11/2007, 4:55 pm EST
This gun thing you guys have south of the border is mind boggling. I don’t have a gun, a few people I know own rifles and shotguns for hunting. Most people up here don’t have guns, feel no need for them, and feel perfectly safe without them. The gun problem we have up here is with them being smuggled across the border from the US and ending up in the hands of criminals. Do yourselves a favor, Give up the Gun!
jen | 3/11/2007, 5:57 pm EST
when did kenny rogers get a rent-a-gun chain?
Johanna | 3/11/2007, 7:26 pm EST
Oh. My. God. I need that gold gun.

I too am from Naptown and this is a sad commentary on the types of “celebrities” we have here. I’m still waiting for that all star commercial featuring that girl from the Watson’s commercials, Stanly Kahn, Don from ‘Don’s Guns,’ and last but not least: Buddy from ‘Buddy’s Carpet’
Dwhip | 3/12/2007, 10:56 am EST
That is one scary dude.

Until Canada makes a true impact on the world (other than enjoying FREE national security), I don’t want to hear how great people you are.
numbed | 3/12/2007, 11:35 am EST
Wow Truth… it’s amazing, you’ve managed to ignore history, common sense, decency, and intelligence with your post. ha!
