A recent piece by NWI.com writer Tom Lounges, investigates the story behind some or rock’s most unusual band names. (Lynyrd Skynyrd is named after band members’ evil high school gym instructor, and so on). We were so fascinating by the stories collected here that we thought we’d (totally commandeer their idea and) do our own research on the origin of some of rock’s more recent band names. Check out our list, then comb the folds of your rock-trivia-filled brain and add your own.
- The Foo Fighters apparently took their name from a term used by U.S. soldiers during WWII for Unidentified Flying Object. A Foo Fighter was believed to be a secret German weapon.
- The Killers named themselves after the fictional band in New Order’s “Crystal” video.
- Nine Inch Nails was named after the stakes used to nail Jesus to the cross, and as an added gothic bonus, nine inches is apparently the length of coffin nails.
- Fall Out Boy reportedly took their name from a series of fan suggestions shouted at an early show, only later realizing that “Fall Out Boy” is the name of Radioactive Man’s sidekick on The Simpsons.
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club did what many bands before them should have done and took their name from Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in The Wild One.
