Good interview. Isaac is funny. I like the book about them though and I think they are a little too pissed for no real reason.

Westerberg for Pres. | 3/8/2007, 8:45 am EST

Johhny Marr in Modest Mouse.. wtf! Big Mouth Strikes Again! Now Brock will know how Joan Of Arc felt…

WTF! | 3/8/2007, 1:41 pm EST

if you dont like the grateful dead…fu*k you!

dreadhead | 3/8/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Isaac Brock is a no talent ass clown.

bob | 3/8/2007, 2:12 pm EST

He didn’t say he dislikes the grateful dead, he just hates their annoying hippie fans. The new album is good, go Isaac.

Jon B. | 3/8/2007, 2:22 pm EST

No talent ass clown, eh? I’m sure thats the exact reason why they aren’t hugely famous and you are. M.M. write awesome songs, and I look forward to hearing any new material. But that doesn’t mean I give a shit about what he has to say. No matter who you are somebody out there could find something about you to ridicule and antagonize. Mind your own business.

The Truth | 3/8/2007, 2:33 pm EST

Your mom’s a no talent ass clown

charlie | 3/8/2007, 2:41 pm EST

The Truth has spoken…Modest Mouse is the most original and poetic band on the scene right now. They continuously evolve and will continue to make stunning music while dreadheads waste their time listening to freaks jam out

ryan | 3/8/2007, 2:47 pm EST

grateful dead own mm

James | 3/8/2007, 3:32 pm EST

What the hell is a Modest Mouse? I love it when nothing bands bash established bands’ fans.

A little jealous?

Cooter | 3/8/2007, 3:56 pm EST

Modest Mouse is for pansies.

Brian | 3/8/2007, 5:09 pm EST

i like modest mouse and i like the dead but i still don’t understand, besides god damn hippies (and i agree with that), why some people hate the dead. i must admit that some of their songs do piss me off especially the poppy ones. but once they get going into a good jam, they are typically a good band..like allman brothers but not as much slide guitar or as good….maybe someone could explain to me why the dead are hated so much by rock stars and elaborate a little more than “because they suck”? i love modest mouse though and brock’s lyrics are really good.

charlie | 3/8/2007, 5:10 pm EST

cooter pooter.

WTF | 3/8/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Isaac Brock is engenius

Tim | 3/8/2007, 10:15 pm EST

“it was like tripping your balls off in squalor”—–that was kind of hilarious

Julio | 3/8/2007, 11:40 pm EST

Don’t hate, appreciate

geekwad | 3/9/2007, 12:23 pm EST

some people have too much mustard gas in their pantaloons. lay off the hate, friends. i may be a pansy, but chick dig me.

no need | 3/9/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Issac Brock is a fucking genius and modest mouse is one of the most original artistic bands out there right now. the book sucked, ill agree, and to all the dead fans crying over what he said…get the fuck over it. Modest Mouse is amazing.

harvey dudeman | 3/9/2007, 2:54 pm EST

i just prefer a tasty 3 minute power pop song than listening to a bunch of assholes drag a song on and on and on and on for fifteen fucking minutes.

Brock Landers | 3/10/2007, 7:03 am EST

I love Modest Mouse and Isaac Brock. And I had no idea that he is funny and we have the same view on things. Oh god, how I hate dirty hippies.

The ReZ | 3/14/2007, 11:50 am EST

Reading comprehension sucks for some of you. These so called deadheads are identified as hippies, hippies are thought of as being tree-huggers and all in tune with the environment, but they left the city a mess after a Grateful Dead show. He’s saying they GD fans are hypocrites…and I know enough of them to agree that most of them are. Brock says the band itself was OK, so ease up and pull the shit out of your eyes dudes.

mrclaw | 3/15/2007, 1:54 am EST

modest mouse is the best in the world. I actually worship them.

Bob in MISSOULA | 3/16/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Greatful Dead are gone, a HAS BEEN… i repeat: HAS BEEN ….. get with the now…
And as far as comparing MM & GD – anyone who does is just f-ing retarded, slow or stupid.. grow up
MM live in MISSOULA TONIGHT!!! boo ya

Austin is a hack | 3/19/2007, 8:59 am EST

What kind of an interviewer tries to kiss ass by bashing a random band? I also love how you really get a guest to open up, with such intriguing questions as “Do you smoke much?” and “What TV shows do you anticipate?” Brilliant!!

Jack | 3/22/2007, 2:19 pm EST

Modest Mouse is shit compared to the grateful dead

T | 3/25/2007, 12:03 am EST

At least Modest Mouse doesn’t drag their songs on and on with shitty slowass solos that no one wants to listen to. Plus they’re just boring.

Hunter | 3/26/2007, 11:24 pm EST

Modest mouse is the best thing to happen to music since pink Floyd and the Who.

the rat | 4/1/2007, 12:36 pm EST

remember when modest mouse didnt write songs about me

RowJimmy | 4/2/2007, 10:37 am EST

Issac is great. Modest Mouse’s new album is good. It is still good old Modest Mouse, but entirely new and evolved music.

Isaac pissed me off with the Dead comment though. No matter how much I love Modest Mouse, they will never even be in near the same level with the Dead. Jerry was a God, Isaac is just Good. There is a difference.

Dead Hater | 4/5/2007, 12:04 am EST

The Dead are dead Float on

Wake Up! | 4/13/2007, 3:39 pm EST

He’s talkin about the fans. The dead may have been good but don’t come close to touching the original creativity. generally I hate opinons like this but its obvious when comparing the music of there times. Not to mention if the dead had such a life changing message, what the fuck happened to the fans?

E Rock | 4/13/2007, 3:47 pm EST

Reading this reminds how stupid people can be. Isaac clearly states he has no issue with the Dead, he even likes what songs he has heard. Why not listen to new music? Jerry Garcia died over ten years ago. In the same vein as the G. Dead, Modest Mouse are innovative, awesomely unique and creative.

yeon. | 4/29/2007, 9:43 am EST

I say this is a good interview, it actually reflected as a good guy, most interviews repeatedly ask what song mean or his past he clearly has stated he doesn’t want to reveal. Nice honest article. Also, modest mouse most amazing recent band with great meanings to there song and perspective on life

vic | 4/29/2007, 9:54 am EST

haters be gone, Modest mouse arn’t out to offend people and hear a bunch of people are tearing them up saying there talentless….so what if they are and so what if he doesn’t like a certain group $10 you lot crying over his comment on grateful dead hate a group of some sort. ROCK ON MM!

Sam | 5/21/2007, 2:27 pm EST

Usually i dont listen to a lot of MM. I prefer Ugly Casanova. Isaac Brock is a musical genius. Plus GD sound like a Kansas cover band.

dataguy | 5/26/2007, 2:39 pm EST

There is a simple reason why some hate the GD. They sing off key. Their songs are about 1/8 tone flat. I don’t have perfect pitch, but I do have perfect intervals, and I cannot listen to them. Whenever Garcia comes on, I look for the tuning key.

scoyo | 6/19/2007, 3:11 am EST

isaac is the modern day john lennon

Nick | 6/24/2007, 10:00 pm EST

I like MM’s old music way better, the new album WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP SANK kinda turns me off. . .But they are really good. And the Grateful Dead are just as good and influenciual. But I must say they both have extremes. I hate people whho are like MM IS THE SUPER BEST I WOULD LIKE KIDNAP ISAAC AND WORSHIP HIM kinda thing I mean the new album is certainly nothing to worship about. I only give it a MILD applause. AND i hate people who are just supreme dead heads and are like THE GRATEFUL DEAD ARE REALLY REALLY GOOD AND STUFF AND THEY CAN JAM GOOD AND THEY ARE REALLY GOOD AND THEY ARE COOL AND THEY CAN REALLY JAM AND ARE REALLY GOOD AND STUFF AND CAN JAM. GD is good for oh say maybe about 10 minutes. After that I would be like beating on the walls chucking the cd out the window crying. Because its so repetative and gets old fast. But in that ten minutes its really catchy. And why the hell are people bagging on other people’s moms? so yeah. . .

Jerma | 7/10/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Shit, Modest Mouse is my favorite fucking band. The new stuff? Eh, it kinda lacks in comparison, but still great music. Fuck what anyone thinks about you guys, Id love a bottle of whiskey a few cigarettes and just chill out to you guys all damn night.

mich z | 8/31/2007, 1:10 am EST

have to say – tweeter center and aganis arena in 2007 were 2 of the best indie-rock performances i ever seen. greatful dead are ok but they have nothing to do with modest mouse anyway,

PattiCake | 11/27/2007, 12:00 am EST

This interview was good, but Issac Brock is a bit arrogant imo. Well, not arrogant, but snarky.

spreadred87 | 1/5/2008, 10:38 am EST

isaac brown??? walk the streets and see how many people know his name. Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart!! Their names live on beyond the band “The Greatful Dead” I mean come on!!! we are talking about rock & roll icons here! And if you know anything about good music you know who these accomplished people are! Im sorry Isaac but you need to get the stick out of you hating ass!

Joel | 6/22/2008, 2:46 pm EST

Everyone is making a big deal about everything. He thinks GD’s fans are hipocritical, he likes GD just fine. good interview. Modest mouse is one of the best and original bends ive ever heard

alan | 12/21/2008, 4:03 am EST

this is commentary, not an attack on anyone or the dead:

name one band that sounds like modest mouse? you can’t.

name all of the bands who try to be the grateful dead? or think they’re part of a culture that died in the 70s, or all the shitty kids and new age hippies you grew up with who think they’re on some level as the dead or jerry, because they smoke weed and drop acid.

the hippie culture is dead, jerry garcia is dead and was a heroin addict waste at his death, just like so many other musicians. wheres the icon, glamor, or “god” in that?
he was miserable and he made himself like that. so he obviously didn’t care about his music or his fans anymore. jerry garcia was not a god, jerry garcia was a human being just like every other famous artist, who could write a damn good song and loved it at one point, isaac brock is the same he loves making music and can write a damn good song. stop putting people who make a change in music on pedestals. comparing and contrasting isaac brock and modest mouse to the grateful dead and jerry garcia is like comparing and contrasting N.W.A. and Ice Cube to Slayer and Kerry King. two totally different people, with two totally different takes and styles on something we all like: music. check it out, like it or dislike it, don’t bash it because of a personal opinion of a singer. i bet you would be surprised to hear opinions from singers and members of your favorite bands, they’re not you, they’re individuals and people who are entitled to their opinions. grow up.

music is something to relate to and enjoy, not to argue and fight over about who’s better and who’s worse. Garcia was good and Brock is good. that’s it, there is no better or worse.

this goes for anyone who likes to argue about music of any genre. it’s pointless and gets you nowhere people like and dislike what they want, leave it at that. relax.

whatever happened to liking music and having a good time? it was never meant to be a pissing contest. but then again this is my PERSONAL OPINION, key phrase.

and i bet jerry would of loved modest mouse, because jerry was a music fan, and a fan of people who could write original music. American Beauty is as equally good and original as The Lonesome Crowded West or Building Nothing Out Of Something. Just because something is new, does not mean it’s not original and not good. It all means something to someone, and that’s what it’s all about.

by the way, i grew up with the dead, and my father saw the dead multiple times, zeppelin, the stones, pink floyd, the who and every other band in that era you could think of and have an orgasm over. and guess what? he likes modest mouse a lot, and he’s an old dead head.

so there you go, get over yourself.
let people like and say what they want. otherwise, we’re all unoriginal arrogant bastards.

Nikki | 1/17/2009, 10:09 pm EST

I could listen to Isaac talk all day. He has a totally sweet voice.

animal | 2/6/2009, 1:10 am EST
