Us vs. Them: Two “Definitive” Rock Lists Battle It Out

3/6/07, 6:12 pm EST

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came up with their “200 Definitive Albums” list today. Too bad we did our own version of it — at more than double the length– four years ago. But we ain’t mad atcha, HoF! Especially since you confirmed what we already knew: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the number one album of all time.

We compared HoF’s top 25 side by side with ours and found more than a few places our paths diverged. Check out some key differences:

  • The Hall of Fame appreciates a woman’s touch: Where there are two female artists listed in the HoF’s top 25 — Carole King’s Tapestry came in at #7 and Shania Twain’s Come On Over scored #21 — our list is more of a boys’ club. Then again…uh…SHANIA TWAIN. Need we say more? (FYI: our #21 was Chuck Berry’s The Great Twenty-Eight. What was HoF’s criteria here?)
  • The HoF fails to recognize the granddaddies of soul like we do: Neither James Brown nor Marvin Gaye crack their top 25. What?!
  • The Hall of Fame doesn’t seem as stoked on the Sixties as as we are — their list’s top 25 has a decidedly more modern slant: 19 of the albums they call out were released post-1970 (Santana’s 1999 disc Supernatural and Pearl Jam’s 1991 opus Ten among them), while ours bows down to an older generation of geniuses (only ten of our top 25 came out after 1970).
  • The Beatles dominate our top 25, showing up five times: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club came in at # 1, Revolver was #3, Rubber Soul at #5, The White Album at #10 and Abbey Road at #14; The HoF honors them just twice in their top 25. Hmmm.

At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of opinion and taste, and it’s all relevant, right? WRONG. It comes down to the empirical, hard and fast rules of ROCK & ROLL! And who wrote those rules? Why, we did of course!

Kidding (kinda). What list do you think is more “definitive”?

They forgot about doo wop.

Sinful heathens.

S-P | 3/13/2007, 12:38 am EST

Soooo…..HOW did “Big Willy Style” find its way into a list of definitive albums?

1950s | 3/12/2007, 10:52 am EST

Where the heck is Buddy Holly???

Joe | 3/11/2007, 1:42 am EST

To Rob the Beatles are the band who made rock respectable musically, before the Beatles rock was not respected and if you think the Beatles made simple music compared their stuff to Elvis of Chuck Berry and you will found the Beatles were way more complicated musically than the three chord stuff most of their idols were doing. Classical musicians took notice of the Beatles music. Go listen to the Sgt Pepper’s album and tell me what rock group was doing that type of music at that time.

Shania Lover | 3/10/2007, 1:45 pm EST

Shania is #1 in all respects period. Peeps are jealous of her clean non controversial lifestyle and want to bash her cos she and her husband are the perfect team in all respects. She’s not druggie, not flambouyant and NOT bothered about all the crap that peeps say about here cos she knows she produces great stuff for her fans. How do I know? Have I met her? Have I spoken to her? YES to all…..

Peeps who bash her need to ask: Why is she the biggest selling artist of all time . Why do her concerts sell out in no time. Think about it - she has a big following cos she’s talented. Oh, and she just happens to be stunningly beautiful.

Aaron | 3/10/2007, 12:40 am EST

Why are we arguing over the impact Shania Twain’s “Come On Over” had on rock and roll? It didn’t have an impact on rock and roll…but it certainly made a huge impact on the music industry. I am by no means a major Shania Twain fan, but I do own “Come On Over” and, in my opinion, it IS one of the best album’s ever created.

Shania Twain and her husband are geniuses in their ability to blend country and pop music together and create a completely new fresh sound. That album single-handedly created a brand new genre, now called “New Country.” There have been a million albums that were almost exact mimics of “Come On Over” and blended country and pop in almost the same way.

Sure, Shania Twain’s lyrics are not incredibly thought provoking and it’s not rock music that it’s producing, but the album is in fact a great record. If you doubt me, I woudl recommend listening to a copy if you know someone who has one. It’s an amazing album, maybe not deserving of the #21 spot, but it has made a huge impact and completely changed country music.

Paul | 3/9/2007, 3:12 pm EST

Some people seem to be confusing a list of “Definitive” albums with a list of “Good” or “Enjoyable” albums. The RS list is far superior because it WAS NOT picked by RS Editors, but by hundreds of people in the music industry who were influenced by the albums on the list. The HOF list is a joke, because it thinks popularity is the same as “definitive” or “essential,” it IS NOT. First, no album of the last 5-10 years should be included because their INFLUENCE on the Rock n’ Roll canon cannot be reliably estimated. Sorry to you fanboys of Shania Twain out there, she is popular, she has fused POP and COUNTRY well, but her influence on ROCK N’ ROLL is almost non-existent. Pink Floyd’s influence is underrated by most, but I think the reality machine will kick in and the next RS 500 list will have Floyd listed up higher.

yohoo | 3/8/2007, 5:27 pm EST

where’s mozart brahms and beethoven…they included nearly everything else, what a piece of shit list

TimMac | 3/8/2007, 5:11 pm EST

There should no soundtracks on this list. That’s filler crap. Also, no blues? Anyone who listens to Zep or the Stones knows the blues..crap crap crap

Rob | 3/8/2007, 11:03 am EST

Good list in my opinion.
Wow, a lot of Shania hater out there who are jealous of her. I find it funny that everyone singles out Shania and her album but don’t even bring up the Beatles cheesy commercial albums.
The Beatles made some of the least artistic and simple albums of alltime but yet you never have a problem with that.
I think it is because Shania is a woman who beat all the men and she did it with charisma, talent and using class and living a clean life.
She is never in contraversy and lives a private life with her family in Swizterland.
The facts are that Shania Twain made the greatest cross over album of alltime spawning 9 big hits from that album alone and COO went on the sell 38 million worldwide.
So if you pick on someone why not pick on those albums that had no imact because Shania’s album made a huge impact and everybody knows the songs on that album and Shania delivers it with sassy charisma like no other.
The woman are just jealous of her looks and talent and success and the men are upset she is better than their artists.
Hate to break it to you but it is all a matter of opinion and you all sound like old, miserable snobby music critics who have their head up their butt.

Rich | 3/7/2007, 10:34 pm EST

Any group of people that would put Come on Over before the masterpiece that is Revolver clearly has no authority running the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Sophie | 3/7/2007, 4:25 pm EST

The HoF list is clearly about which album made the most money over the years…not to mantion it completely SUCKS!!!!! I mean, you have Shania Twain before at #21, what the fuck is that! That made me want to puke all over my computer. At least they gave their props to Zeppelin at #4, RS didn’t do that.

I only saw part of the list, but from the looks of it, the HoF list is a complete waste of time and energy, and i am deeply regreting the fact that i even looked at for the time that i did. Shame on you HoF, SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!

Hunter | 3/7/2007, 2:35 pm EST

Practically ANY Pearl Jam album deserves to be in the top 25 best albums ever, they didn’t go with the best one.. But at least they recognized the best band of their time, which is something you haven’t done enough.

Everyone knows Rolling Stone magazine has the worst lists.

o sweet | 3/7/2007, 2:10 pm EST

The “Hall of Fame”’s list has got to be some kind of prank. I mean it is really unbelievable. I mean they’ve done decent with inductions and stuff
but why would they put out such a ridiculous list. I mean come on really. I’m pretty sure that Kenny G and Shania Twain and Will Smith do not even come close to falling in the category of rock and roll much less “definitive” rock and roll. Ridiculous completely ridiculous. Way out of line. Can you believe these characters?

J | 3/7/2007, 1:47 pm EST

OK Computer, the greatest album of all time, is ranked 111. Green Day has 2 albums ahead of it. No Doubt has an album ranked higher. Pathetic.

But RS is no better, they didn’t even put it in the top 100. Shame.

beautifuldispair | 3/7/2007, 1:33 pm EST

I can’t believe Shania’s “The Woman In Me” is not on the list.

benn | 3/7/2007, 1:29 pm EST

that list is almost a joke..

... | 3/7/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Can someone explain to me how Appetite for Destruction is #36, behind NORAH JONES?!? attrocity.

Vitalogst | 3/7/2007, 1:27 pm EST

The list is a joke, case in point, Graceland, winner of many grammys, on numerous best albums list, and commerical success, is listed at 83, while Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory, is number 84, which means, that Graceland, the genre breaking, emotionally resonant album, is only slighty better, than rap rockers. That Paul Simon, one of, if not the best, American lyricists, is just a little bit better than the punk kids singing trite songs about their pain. This list is offensive to music appreciators.

Cowboy | 3/7/2007, 1:23 pm EST

The HoF list is embarssing and only further proves how little the institution knows about the true spirit of Rock n Roll. It saddens me even more to see RS wasting time, money and web space to a list that would have you believe that Creed’s Human Clay (#95) tops the Clash’s London Calling (#96). RS, please get back to the business of writing about music that matters.

Doug | 3/7/2007, 1:23 pm EST

The top 10 is good for the most part but it completely sucks after that.

Coy | 3/7/2007, 1:17 pm EST

Rolling Stone loses all credibility when it puts “Fall Out Boy” on it’s cover. If you “wrote the rules of rock’n'roll”…you wouldn’t have Fall Out Boy on your cover.

favre_sux | 3/7/2007, 1:03 pm EST

This list is disappointing a best! How can you not acknowledge works by people like the Pixies, Jeff Buckley, or Neil Young, and then include the master works of people like Will Smith (the guy who wrote parents just don’t understand!), Kenny G and Shania Twain. Seeing things like this helps to invalidate the importance of the Rock n’ roll HOF and the numerous bands that get screwed over by them each year.

Ira | 3/7/2007, 12:53 pm EST

HOF’s list is OFFENSIVE. They should burn in hell. What criteria did they even use to come up with that piece of shit excuse for a list?

Me | 3/7/2007, 12:40 pm EST

When will people learn that “Revolver” and not “Sgt. Pepper’s” is the best album?

R. O. | 3/7/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Tell the HOF that if Carole King is good enough to be in the top 10 definitive albums, then she should be in the R&R HOF as a performer too-not just as a writer. What is taking them so long?

Mark | 3/7/2007, 12:35 pm EST

I’ll agree with you RS. Eventhough I don’t completely agree with your list. HoF’s list is insulting to good music. There is good music on it but when you add Shania Twain in your top 25 albums of all time, your list gets discredited.

Stu | 3/7/2007, 12:15 pm EST

alanis morrisette?!!? Green Day?!?!?! Shania Twain?!?!?!? Who wrote this fucking list?!

Kash | 3/7/2007, 12:13 pm EST

I think that both lists have their share of flaws. I’ve always hated RS’ 60’s bias, and the fact that the Beatles and Bob Dylan suffocate the top 25 EVERY DAMN TIME. I’m not dissing either one; I’m saying that it seems like RS takes the easy way out. However, when I saw Shania Twain’s “Come on Over”, 50’s “Get Rich…” and Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” in the top 100, I was absolutely disgusted.

I do like how the HoF recognized that the Only album that can come close to Sgt. Pepper is “Dark side of the Moon”. RS always shafts this album, citing “Pet Sounds” or “Highway ‘61 Revisited” as superior….THEY ARE NOT.

Also, the HoF gets nods for having Tool in their top 200, Something RS fails to do.

T | 3/7/2007, 12:12 pm EST

But on the other hand, RS has Pearl Jam’s Ten WAY DOWN at number 207…behind Green Day’s Dookie.

I repeat, Ten is ranked LOWER than Dookie!

At least HoF gave a little credit to best band in the world.

T | 3/7/2007, 12:07 pm EST

Creed is on the HoF list.

Nuff said.

Ryan | 3/7/2007, 12:05 pm EST

Madonna #164 “Like A Virgin”

Are you guys fucking retarded. This album generated a couple of her biggest hits EVER with a few other additional hits.

Darrel | 3/7/2007, 12:01 pm EST

Thanks Jim G. for clearing that up, that makes alot more sense.

perfectomix | 3/7/2007, 12:00 pm EST

I guess we have to decide which is worse:

A list that honestly tries to choose the “best” material, but severely shortchanges the post-boomer period

Or

A list that’s much more balanced, but was created for the sole purpose of convincing consumers to go out and buy more CDs, while being dressed up as a “best of” list of artistic achievement

Dwayne Hoover | 3/7/2007, 11:47 am EST

Man, I never realized how many Twain fans were out there! Don’t take offense when someone is upset with her presence on the list. There is one simple reason she shouldn’t be on the list: Rock N’ Roll HOF put the list together, therefore, artists on the lists should be Rock N’ Roll. Shania Twain is not Rock N’ Roll.

abandonedstation | 3/7/2007, 11:37 am EST

dear beatles?,

here’s what you tell your friend. the beatles were the first ‘group’ were the members were as talented writing music as playing/singing it (arguably, more talented in the former). while the early beatles material is rather straight forward pop, their immense popularity allowed the group to experiment in the recording studio in ways previous unheard of, in a period of time that most groups today wait before releasing their next album (the morphing from ‘I wanna hold your hand’ to ‘Sgt. Pepper’ took three years). while certainly taking advantage of the tumultous sixties (including the drugs), all four of them were intelligent, open minded, and opinionated, which was a rarity for artists at that period (save for bob dylan).
the song structures themselves weren’t earthshaking, but they were of high quality, performed by excellent singers, with a production value that was incredible. so many of these things are taken for granted today, but the beatles were doing this when rock was still considered a ‘fad’.

although record sales are never a good indicator of ‘good’ music, it does indicate how far-reaching the music is. and the fact that the compilation album ‘one’ sold over 20 million units shows that the beatles interest/influence has not disappeared.

that said, some people still don’t like beatles music (too poppy, too soft, etc.), and if that’s the case it’s hard to convince someone that they’re the most important band ever.

cindy | 3/7/2007, 11:37 am EST

I laugh at how you losers are trying to bash Shania because she is talented and one of the most successful artists of alltime.
The facts are that everyone has different tastes and any moron who listens to Shania’s COO album or her TWIM album could see that the music is great and Shania is the total package. It is quite sad that Rolling Stone and its readers here are so blind and jealous that they try and discredit a classy icon like Shania.

saylor828 | 3/7/2007, 11:23 am EST

don’t know if anyone else caught this, but Nevermind was ranked at 10 for the Rock and Roll hall of fame’s list. I think that’s a good choice for them putting it there, but it has it’s release date set at 1996. Last I heard, that album came out in 91 and Kurt was 2 years into his post-death legacy in 96

Dwayne Hoover | 3/7/2007, 11:22 am EST

That is the worst list ever. Usher? Kid Rock? 50 cent? Will Smith? Kenny G? Titanic Sndtrk? Nelly? Creed? I could go on and on. This list has to be a joke right?

Elisa | 3/7/2007, 11:18 am EST

Boomer vs Boomer

They both wind up smelling like skunk, anyway!

twebbs1012 | 3/7/2007, 11:11 am EST

As far as I’m concerned this list can’t be taken seriously. No offense to people that love instrumentals, but a movie score (Titanic) containing one song with vocals is not an album. I would say about 90% of the people that bought that soundtrack did it for “My Heart Will Go On”. I think that’s a conservative estimate. Its presence completely invalidates the list. Like someone else said, it’s obviously about album sales.

Francisco Valdes | 3/7/2007, 11:01 am EST

The HoF list is terrible, pure grammy award nonsense. Avril Lavigne?, Matchbox Twenty?, Live?,. C’Mon. I didnt agree with RS list but at least it was more coherent that most of the crap on the HoF list.

abandonedstation | 3/7/2007, 10:58 am EST

ha!
big willie styles!
the phantom of the opera soundtrack!
enya!
celine dion!
beyone solo album!
kenny g!
dixie chicks (twice)!

long live rock and roll!

(and to those who say it’s nice to a have a list with more recent releases: there’s a lot better recent stuff than what’s listed . Where’s Pavement? The Smiths? Rage? Kings of Leon? Sonic Youth?)

beatles? | 3/7/2007, 10:54 am EST

i need a little help from my friends here. i was having an intellectual music conversation with my friend who is completely opposed to the beatles and suprisingly enough the beatles came up. he mentioned the suns sessions group as to being the revolutionary group not the beatles. to which i said that they both were revolutionary, sun sessions pretty much popularized music and the beatles completely turned the music sound upsidedown. He wanted to know how and thats where i got stuck. I threw back at him that the beatles had unusual song structures and introduced new ideas in pop music. that didn’t seem to do it for him. i need some help in telling my friend that the beatles are the best band ever and how they revolutionized it. could someone help me out a bit with some information i could throw his way.

The Geschlep | 3/7/2007, 10:52 am EST

well, I haven’t seen the list yet. Don’t know if i want to now. I may cry

THX-1138 | 3/7/2007, 10:34 am EST

Rolling Stone’s 500 list I feel, was pretty legit. Every album I thought should be on there was on there is some place or another. But this list by the rock hall is complete rubbish. Beyonce’s debut makes the list, but Trent Reznor and Lou Reed are nowhere to be found. It finally establishes my theory that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is operated by 13-year-old cockstains who decide it would be super awesome to induct Val Halen before The Stooges. Gee, how ironic. This list is further proof that quality and influence doesn’t matter. Only sales. Creed sold more albums than Radiohead. SON OF A BITCH!!! THEY MUST BE TEN TIMES BETTER THAN THOSE MELONCHOLY FUCKS!!! I just can’t get my head around this reasoning.

Jim G | 3/7/2007, 10:33 am EST

What the RS piece does not mention is that the HOF list was co-sponsored by the “National Association of Recording Merchandisers” and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. According to the Washington Post, the list “was chosen by a committee of music retailers within NARM.” Well this explains an awful lot regarding the HOF list’s credit to sales over quality (Twain, 50 Cent, Kenny G). My only question is where are Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer? Millions sold can’t be wrong.

radiohead | 3/7/2007, 10:25 am EST

i think rolling stone did a better job, but both lists failed to have radiohead crack at least top 100. Radiohead are the band of this generation.

brn2runsupernova | 3/7/2007, 10:13 am EST

I JUST THREW UP IN MY MOUTH, FIRST OFF HIP HOP WHAT?? ROCKN F@#KN ROLL!! NO MORE BRUCE, STOOGES, OASIS, RUSH, KISS, ENOUGH WITH SGT PEPPERS ITS AVERAGE ALOT BETTER BEATLES RECORDS OUT THERE, THESE LISTS SUCK PLEASE SOME ONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT MUSIC NEXT TIME PICK,

Poor Lazarus | 3/7/2007, 10:12 am EST

It appears that HoF list tries to represent every slightly decent modern artist. Since it’s list is 200, as opposed to RS which is 500, the HoF list does not really highlight the truly best albums of all time. This is why the Beatles are more representative in RS top ten, and in the HoF list, “Big Willie Style” by Will Smith ranks above Dylan’s masterpiece, “Blood on the Tracks.” Give me a break; if you’re going to have a true “best” list, you can’t let everyone in the recording industry on it. The great artists are going to have multiple repeats on the top, e.g. the Beatles and Dylan.

Darrel | 3/7/2007, 10:07 am EST

I have to say, I lean toward your list RS more than the HOF, first, any list that has saturday night fever and grease SOUNDTRACKS above are you experienced right off the bat is bogus. Then they have Dixie chicks and Alanis above Miles Davis? WOW. Then they have Avril Lavinge, but no Velvet Ubderground? Then Nelly is above London Calling and MATCHBOX 20 is above Physical Graffiti? C’mon! I maybe mistaken but I dont see Robert Johnson on the HOF’s list at all, maybe they are right, he only influenced some of the greatest artists of all time, and some say the god father of rock’n roll and one the most important blues artists to ever live, but I guess in 60 years we will be talking about how great Avril Lavine was and how many people she influenced.

The only thing DIFINITIVE about HOF’s list is that it is SHIT!

Oddjob | 3/7/2007, 10:04 am EST

“Beatles Shmeatles”… I was listening to Revolver yesterday, and to a bootleg of beatles outtakes in the car on the way to work this morning. You have no idea what you’re talking about. And that line from the Clash song was maybe the least prophetic thing ever uttered in song.

If I wrote that list the Beatles would probably hold the top 5, though Bob Dylan might be able to sneak in as well

Van Halen | 3/7/2007, 9:30 am EST

Van Halen 1 #58 and 1984 #102 is RIDICULOUS , and 5150 where is ?

Steven | 3/7/2007, 9:26 am EST

I usually don’t post on these things, but I’m convinced that Rolling Stone is just trying to please the roots of rock, forgetting about newer influential releases. However HoF’s list looks to be compiled by a bunch of pretentious 20somethings who can’t see past their own opinions to pay homage to the 50’s and 60’s where most of the artists on their list got their freaking inspiration and practice. Oh and 50 Cent did nothing for music except spawn 100,000,000 songs about his bitch my bitch our cars and some liquor. Get a fucking clue, Nas is right Hip-hop is dead, and so is that Rock Hall list to me!

jacob i | 3/7/2007, 9:19 am EST

I thought RS list was a little too old, thier seems to be a little more updated.

Dork | 3/7/2007, 9:18 am EST

Ours list right and yours is wrong ha ha…

I bet if you re-wrote the list now four years later it would include Fall out boy, Justin Timberlake and Panic at the disco.

Your probobly going to take this off of the comments, arent you?

spyderlover | 3/7/2007, 9:16 am EST

ummmmm WHERE’S ‘DISENTEGRATION’ BY THE CURE? what a joke of a list!

Unlucky Man | 3/7/2007, 9:12 am EST

Where is Urban Hymns? Where is Nick Cave? Tom Waits? Randy Newman? Where the hell is Shane McGowan? Welcome to the Hall of Shame!

Anonymous | 3/7/2007, 9:07 am EST

shania twain and celine dion on the list at all is a disgrace. creed on the list discredits it completely. MY retarted brother and his friends made a list for me yesterday and it was more valid than this pantsload of shit.

Mr. Dart | 3/7/2007, 8:57 am EST

I must be looking at the wrong list, because I could have sworn that I saw Jewel and Avril Lavigne on it.

Are you effing kidding me?

Macfisto | 3/7/2007, 8:53 am EST

My list is my reference. To each his own and “HOF” or “RS” list are worth as much or as less as mine!

Acthung baby, Ok Computer, The Downward Spiral, Elephant, Kid A, Joshua tree, Funeral, The Music are my tops

ME | 3/7/2007, 8:40 am EST

OBVIOUSLY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DISAGREE WITH THIS LIST BUT I JUST THINK ITS CRAP. I HAVE ALL THE RESPECT IN THE WORLD FOR THE DIXIE CHICKS BUT THEY SHOW UP 3 TIMES BEFORE THE CHILI PEPPERS EVEN MAKE THE LIST. THE BEATLES, FLOYD AND ZEP DESERVE MORE LOVE AND WHAT THE HELL IS SHANIA TWAIN AND AVRIL LAVIGNE DOING ON THE LIST. OH AND LINKIN PARK SHOULD NOT BE SO HIGH OR EVEN ON THE LIST THEY SUCK

twodopeboys | 3/7/2007, 8:21 am EST

for the last week and a half ive been listening to beatles for sale and magical mistery tour every night…so i guess what im trying to say is lick my nuts?

Taltos1667 | 3/7/2007, 8:11 am EST

Why not a list of the best Greatest Hits albums of all time? Johnny Mathis, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, James Last. It would make as much sense.

Beatles Shmeatles | 3/7/2007, 8:08 am EST

So many Beatles albums. When was the last time any of these so called fans actually sat down and played a Beatles album in full? Be honest… Phoney Beatle mania has not bitten the dust….yet.

Phydeaux | 3/7/2007, 8:01 am EST

Nobody remembers Frank Zappa?

The Greek | 3/7/2007, 7:45 am EST

Oh! You so goooood! You put numerus old albums in list! Good! Good! I would really love it if someone had the balls to not include half of the Beatles discography in the top 25. I would also love it if in such lists we could see more new music. Kings of leon, Strokes etc. I hope that in your “definitive” list of 2015 there will be not a single pre-70 album. Let’s wish that music will be better and better.

Martin | 3/7/2007, 7:09 am EST

Anybody know what ranking criteria was used for this list (aside from “what albums do HoF members have in their record collections) ?

Some inspired choices, but some truly mind-bogglingly awful ones as well.

Cutting 70 years of international popular music down to a 200 “Best Of” list means discarding a helluva lot of good music. And that’s bound to piss people off.

Tonus | 3/7/2007, 4:48 am EST

The HoF can take a running leap. Big Willie Style ahead of Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks??!! I’m not even gonna bother looking at the rest of it.

Coldplay? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

Awesome, I love math.
Hip+retro-any respect for music=The rock and roll hall of fame greatest album list!

Tonight's The Night | 3/7/2007, 2:36 am EST

I give HoF props for putting Dark Side Of The Moon in the top ten because I think RS really underrated that album on the list. That said I stopped looking after the top 100 because it was rediculous. Nelly comes in before Neil Young? And they put Harvest as his best effort…. at 98?? C’mon, it’s just a rediculous list that means nothing, but I didn’t know they were so out of touch with what is good opposed to what sells.

greg k | 3/7/2007, 2:27 am EST

I’m surprised that the rock and roll hall of fame didn’t put Now 10 or kids bop on their list of 200 definitive albums, or maybe some will smith..but seriously though will smith rules and the rock and roll hall of fame sucks..I’m pissed

greg k | 3/7/2007, 2:26 am EST

oh yeah also..there was no who albums…no tommy…no who’s next…the who where one of the most explosive bands of all time!!!! come on rock and roll hall of fame, you guys totally suck

greg k | 3/7/2007, 2:21 am EST

did i actually just read over the rock and roll hall of fame’s list of the definitive 200 albums and not see any velvet underground albums..while i saw avril lavigne, and christina aguilara…wow thats the worst list i have ever seen..the rolling stone list was wayyyyyyy better..theres no compariosn

Randy | 3/7/2007, 2:16 am EST

It’s nice to see that U2 is getting some more respect and recognition as one of the best, if not the best rock band of all time. No one has sold more albums, one more awards, sold more concert tickets, and meant more outside of their music than this band. They deserve everything they get noticed for and more. Surprised How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb wasn’t on this list, but All That You Can’t Leave Behind is. I guarantee their next album will be their best.

Winston | 3/7/2007, 1:51 am EST

Faith Hill over Johnny Cash….hmmm. Wait why is Faith Hill on here at all?

Greg | 3/7/2007, 1:46 am EST

And by the way, “Sgt. Pepper” is not the Beatles best album, “Revolver” is, Both George Harrison & George Martin themselves have stated that.

Johnny | 3/7/2007, 1:44 am EST

…hell, and here i was thinking all along that Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” was a superior contribution to rock history than Shania…guess i was wrong. thanks for setting me straight HOF.

chillidogdupree | 3/7/2007, 1:43 am EST

No Information Society!? What about the Offspring? What about Millie Vanilli? The Beatles are on there? The Beatles are the most over-rated band in history! The Commodores should definitely have taken at least one there positions. I WAS happy to see Shania Twain on there though–she might not be that pretty but she sure is gifted musically.

Spencer | 3/7/2007, 1:42 am EST

shania twain? SANTANA? they must be kidding us.

but they don’t have lou reed or oasis’ definitely maybe on there. what a fuckin joke

craigers | 3/7/2007, 1:41 am EST

beyonce but no stooges? did a 45 year old mother of 2 boys in Oklahoma write this list?

david c | 3/7/2007, 1:26 am EST

I have less than a hundred of those albums whereas I have well over half of the stone’s top 500 so I guess RS wins, but if I had a list it would kick both y’alls ass. Where do I sign up to take over this crap?

Ryan | 3/7/2007, 12:45 am EST

The White Album at 39? Are You Experienced at 41? Revolver at 42? Nelly above London Calling? Ziggy Stardust at 171? 50 Cent/Nelly/Will Smith/Christina Aguilera even MENTIONED? Are they fucking kidding?

Delaybass | 3/7/2007, 12:23 am EST

That list is crap! Nelly and Will Smith alone is just silly

akspencer | 3/7/2007, 12:07 am EST

creed above the sex pistols the clash soundgarden and jeff buckley not to mention 300 other real artists

Caleb | 3/7/2007, 12:03 am EST

both lists are terribly flawed, while the HOF puts more modern bands which is good, they also put on more shit bands. The rolling stone list puts less modern bands on while avoiding bad music also repeats too many classic bands too early.

NiB | 3/7/2007, 12:03 am EST

Radiohead, 1 mention at 111 with OK Computer. This list is a joke

Miguel G | 3/6/2007, 11:57 pm EST

I think the fact that an album is in the list is good. But to say that the order is perfect, I don’t think so. I’m not sure about the criteria to post an album, I supposed the recognition that has gotten from the critics, the longevity and the sales are important.
Shania at 27, wonderful I love her (The biggest selling album by a woman). But Madonna at 164!!!, I think she deserves a little respect. Where is James Brown? Elton John and Billy joel Just once!!!!, Where are Rod Stewart, Blondie, Abba, Tracy Chapman….??. In the list Shakira and Avril Lavigne, no way.

kathy | 3/6/2007, 11:26 pm EST

I can’t figure out what the criteria are for the hof list. The Grease soundtrack is at 37 but London Calling is 96 and there’s no mention of Lou Reed. I don’t expect to agree with everything on these lists, that’s part of the fun, but is this based on artistry, innovation, sales, or something more random?

Boatman | 3/6/2007, 11:08 pm EST

Whoever hacked into the Rock Hall Of Fame computer doesn’t know much about music.

Bryan | 3/6/2007, 11:07 pm EST

This goes out to shelly at the bottom, your reasoning is valid, yes everyone does not have the same opion but i would argue that because of these the genius at the Rock Hall should not call it definitive. Honestly though, the picks they made were horrendous, it seemed as though they picked on how much an album sold and forgot some truly great one’s like of say Blonde on Blonde, or Sandinista, or anything from any bluesman, and under representation of great black artists, all that was their were shit ones from today who just talk about pussy and guns and have no heart to them, but to not get too far off topic does anybody really believe that Avril Lavigne released a better album than Bringing it all back home, for christsake that one help to reshape that sounds that would be forever heard. Ugh i’m disgusted in the selection, the validity of the whole of fame is gone.

John | 3/6/2007, 11:05 pm EST

I am glad Shania got on the list since her albums are the best I have ever heard.
I like the Beatles and U2 albums too.

As I go down to #70’s I see Faith Hill. Who is she? I have never heard of her and why is her album on the list.It says she is a country artist.
The only country artists I know are Shania Twain and Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash.

Pope Judas I | 3/6/2007, 11:03 pm EST

i retrat my previous statement…i guess people today truly don’t know what a “definitive” list is

Jared | 3/6/2007, 11:02 pm EST

It’s almost as if they walked into Best Buy and picked up 200 albums at random…

barf | 3/6/2007, 10:59 pm EST

ehhhh…..will smith’s big willy style is in front of ziggy stardust, blood on the tracks, zep I, texas flood, public enemy, etc….come on guys…u gotta be kidding me

Greg | 3/6/2007, 10:56 pm EST

What about the Ramones…THE RAMONES!!!!! not to mention no Pixies, no Talking Heads, no Elvis Costello… did I mention no Ramones. This list needs to be withdrawn and re-done.

tim | 3/6/2007, 10:53 pm EST

its cool to see dark side of the moon and appatite for destruction both in which are my favorite albums.

however much of the list is a joke

Boatman | 3/6/2007, 10:49 pm EST

Faith Hill over Wish You Were Here?
Mariah Carey?
Creed?
Will Smith?
Linkin Park?
Beyonce’?
Enya?
Bocel li?
The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has finally revealed itself!

Bob Sagballs | 3/6/2007, 10:45 pm EST

I’m pretty sure that if you looked up rock and roll in a thesaurus some antonyms listed would include Kenny G, the Titanic soundtrack, Shania Twain, and Faith Hill. Whoever made up this ridiculous piece of shit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame should get the living shit slapped out of them.

SATAN | 3/6/2007, 10:38 pm EST

can you believe that they actually had the audacity to put willenium by will smith on the list, damn that’s low. In Utero should definatly have been on there, nirvana got snubbed on that one.

Marry | 3/6/2007, 10:29 pm EST

Much better list than Rolling Stone.
Shania Twain has created some of the greatest music ever and deserves the top 25.
I think people need to get over it and realize nobody is better than anyone else.It is a matter of opinion. And Shania and Mutt Lange create majic together.

metalkills | 3/6/2007, 10:21 pm EST

avril lavigne over zeppelin? a crime

cheesecrop | 3/6/2007, 10:04 pm EST

Both lists have flaws… the RS list completely buries the 80’s and 90’s in favor of a total boomer blowout, and some of these works are coasting on over inflated reputations that younger folks simply haven’t bothered to question. The Hall list is a little better, but the AC crap sucks, and I don’t care what anyone says, no way is Eminem or Dre better than Def Lep or GNR. PERIOD!!!

This is the Worst List Ever | 3/6/2007, 10:00 pm EST

I just puked all over my computer.

craig | 3/6/2007, 9:57 pm EST

and by the way, no one has mentioned the real head scratcher here yet.
the titanic soundtrack?
wtf?

This is the Worst List Ever | 3/6/2007, 9:51 pm EST

No Velvet Underground!!!! Creed???
This has to be a joke….I can’t believe how bad this list is. I really can’t.

craig | 3/6/2007, 9:48 pm EST

i actually kind of appreciate the hof list because they recognize that the past 20 years actually happened. sure, creed sucks ass, but there is just as much good music now as there was then, you just have to know where to find it (hint-its not on the radio)
and while such music is not on either list, i kind of like that they dont give a fifth of the list to the beatles and bob dylan.

dunke tien | 3/6/2007, 9:43 pm EST

Good to see Pink Floyd finally getting some respect. One of the most critically acclaimed, original, and commercially successful bands of all time didn’t even get a spot in RS’s 100 most important figures in rock. Wtf? BUT a greatest hits album, no Is This It from The Strokes, and not sure on this but was there no Velvet Underground? Maybe I missed it, but if not, c’mon HOF guys.

NTA | 3/6/2007, 9:39 pm EST

I certainly believe art and music are personal choices … but that said, in what madcap alternative universe can one honestly state with a straight face that Metallica (14), Shania (21), & Dr. Dre (30) will have a greater historical impact than Hendrix, Revolver and the White Album? … or is it just me?

JH | 3/6/2007, 9:37 pm EST

Human Clay? Ahead of OK Computer? This is a joke, right?

Anonymous | 3/6/2007, 9:36 pm EST

#94 Creed - Human Clay
#95 The Clash - London Calling
#96 Celine Dion.

I think that’s all that needs to be said.

Stev | 3/6/2007, 9:33 pm EST

Hall of fame’s list:

Dixie chicks, creed(!), linkin park, green day, MATCHBOX 20(!), Jewel, Dave Matthews Band (!) in top 100. Speakerboxx/the love below at 30? Surprised they missed Panic at the Disco, Good Charlotte, and Avril Lavigne…

London calling at high 90s, no Radiohead, Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols… do these people even listen to music?

mannishboy | 3/6/2007, 9:25 pm EST

London Calling at 95 wtf

Brian | 3/6/2007, 9:24 pm EST

the list is…okay..but not too good

John | 3/6/2007, 9:20 pm EST

The Hall’s list is..pretty terrible, but who could expect anything else from a rock institution that refuses to acknowledge ELO or Chicago. The Rolling Stone list is pretty great I think, my only complaint being that they allowed Greatest Hits and other compilations, as well as snubbing George Harrison’s Living In The Material World, the very underrated successor to All Things Must Pass.

Austimus | 3/6/2007, 9:17 pm EST

Ummm….Rolling Stone…
The Beatles had some great stuff, no lie there, but 5 albums in the top 25? That’s bull crap.

Rob | 3/6/2007, 9:00 pm EST

Great list by the HOF.
Shania deserves to have 2 of her albums in the top 25. She broke records worldwide and introduced her sassy attitude and unique sound that the whole world loved except Rolling Stone.
I just don’t get why people are so jealous of Shania and hate her so much. she lives a private classy life in Switzerland and makes music for her fans not critics or the industry.
I think Shania deserves more credit and am really upset Rolling Stone is bashing her despite her being on several of Rolling Stones covers.

justin | 3/6/2007, 8:59 pm EST

the hall of fame made quite possibly one of the worst lists ever made in any genre. it made me physically sick to read. so many reasons why i wont bother to list them. (creed)

That was a foul! | 3/6/2007, 8:36 pm EST

The Definitive List is absolulely horrible. RS’is far superior.

Mike | 3/6/2007, 8:26 pm EST

nevermind, that list loses all credibility for having human clay on the list

Roger | 3/6/2007, 8:21 pm EST

the HOF’s list is the biggest joke ive ever seen in my life. i mean rolling stones list was awful too, but HOF’s is the dumbest most retarded shit ive ever seen. AVRIL LAVIGNE IS ON IT, GIMME A FUCKING BREAK GUYS, U DESERVE TO BE BANNED FROM THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, ALL OF U

Joe R | 3/6/2007, 8:00 pm EST

so glad to see Pearl Jam so high, but Destiny’s Child on the this list and no Is This It by The Strokes, or Funeral by The Arcade Fire?

jesus, do they have shit for brains?!

lik roper | 3/6/2007, 7:56 pm EST

long live AOR!

nick | 3/6/2007, 7:55 pm EST

Kenny g on a list of the greatest albums ever. I’ve already tied my noose.

Mike | 3/6/2007, 7:55 pm EST

way to recognize pearl jam, hof

009 | 3/6/2007, 7:53 pm EST

Upon perusing the top 25 of the r&r hall of fame list, i generally was pleased. it was nice to see dark side of the moon at #2 (the floyd and all progressive rock in general have been getting shafted by this magazine for years), but then things started getting f*cked up. eminem and 50 cent? sry but those two blow dogs for crack, i don’t care who says otherwise. i got to kenny g at number 107 and then stopped reading, so i guess that makes rs the winner.

blackcrowe1027 | 3/6/2007, 7:31 pm EST

How can someone respect a list that puts not only Boston’s debut album but Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet above Actung Baby? C’mon. That’s ridiculous. While I applaud diversity, that’s a but much…

SATAN | 3/6/2007, 7:25 pm EST

Please tell me that Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” isn’t number 43. That is a big mistake. That is one of the most inflential albums of the past 30 years. Both lists are flawed, majorly.

Pope Judas I | 3/6/2007, 7:17 pm EST

this list is so much better than the RS 500…mainly because artists like rush didnt get snubbed this time…also they had good albums on there which RS poorly snubbed such as Full Moon Fever….plus they rightly placed who’s next, dark side of the moon, led zeppelin 4 and the wall in the top 25…sure there is less of some essential artists (i.e. Bob Dylan) but overall i think its better

craig | 3/6/2007, 7:16 pm EST

to be fair, rolling stones list sucks equally

i like how neither of these lists bothers to venture at all away from the mainstream.

nick | 3/6/2007, 7:12 pm EST

What a fucking awful list! Avril Lavgine?! Big WILLIE STYLE??! WHAAATTTTT? This is the hall of fame?

jon | 3/6/2007, 7:06 pm EST

please tell me i didnt just see 2 green day albums and a linkin park album and 50 cent come before the clash’s london calling.

Jack | 3/6/2007, 7:06 pm EST

The HoF list is the WORST list ever (said in comic book guy voice). Shania Twain and Dixie chicks in the top 200, let alone in the top 40. This list is a joke. Sure they chucked in the usual suspects up near the top. but cheapened the experience by having shania twain anywhere in the list. This list officially sucks, and Ive gotta say I have yet to come across a list that surpasses rolling stone’s 500 greatest albums list.

jill hives | 3/6/2007, 6:58 pm EST

silly rabbit, lists are for kids!

sweetnessfollows | 3/6/2007, 6:48 pm EST

did anyone else notice the linkin park and creed in the top 100?

Kevin | 3/6/2007, 6:39 pm EST

First of all Shania Twain is not only a great worldwide icon but she has made the best cross over albums of alltime. It is all a matter of what you like but this constant jealous and bashing of Shania Twain by Rolling Stone and other clueless people is laughable.
We all have our tastes and likes and nobody is 100% right so stop with all this b.s. and trashing artists who have talent and success despite of what you think.
Whats even more laughable is that Rolling Stone included cheesy Maddona albums and Britney Spears albums and never ever included some of Shania great sounding and popular albums.
I will take Shania over 90% of the people on Rolling Stones list because Shania at least has talent, charisma and class, something I can’t say for Rolling Stone or its readers.

A.J. | 3/6/2007, 6:35 pm EST

the rock and roll hall of fame should really stop letting their 11 year old sister choose albums to be on their list

shania twain… for serial?

shelley | 3/6/2007, 6:28 pm EST

honestly neither
each person is going to have their own tastes and hopefully will have a well reason arguement to defend their reasoning n that is why there are so many similarities, because some cds are just good no matter what you personal opinions may be.
but both lists are good references and good ideas to reference your opinions off of.
for example i agree with both alot but also disagree alot too
so..niether are definitive and neither can be
