Weekend Rock List: Best Songs That Feature Whistling

3/2/07, 3:49 pm EST

Peter Bjorn and John’s quirky piece of ear candy “Young Folks” is up there on the list, but recent ubiquity doesn’t earn a spot on the top five. Here are our picks. What would you add?

  • “Patience,” Guns N’ Roses
  • “Dock of the Bay,” Otis Redding
  • “Centerfold,” J. Geils Band
  • “The Stranger,” Billy Joel
  • “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” Bobby McFerrin
  • “After It All,” Cat Power

I forgot this one:

The theme tune to the mid-90s BBC TV comedy series starring Rowan Atkinson, The Thin Blue Line, was also a daft whistled tune!

sureenough | 3/31/2007, 7:42 pm EST

Dock of the Bay is easily the best song -though ruined by overplay on classic rock/oldie radio. I’d have to go with Two of Us, The Beatles, as #2 - I like Jealous Guy, but not nearly as much.

Wow, One in a million is really a crappy song. Please guys stop acting like G & R is still a cool band.

DevilDoc | 3/5/2007, 12:07 pm EST

“The Fishing Hole” the theme song for the Andy Griffith Show. It’s not a rock song but it’s all whistling, no singing, it’s catchy, and I think almost everybody can whistle that song. The whistling carries the whole song. How many songs can boast that.

wrecksracer | 3/5/2007, 11:02 am EST

Glad to see Harry Irene by Captain Beefheart make it……How about Big Chief by Professor Longhair….me got fire me can’t put out…….

realblacksheep | 3/5/2007, 11:00 am EST

“The Ruling Class” by Loose Fur.

Older than dirt | 3/5/2007, 10:19 am EST

“I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman” by “Whistling” Jack Smith - a minor hit for about fifteen minutes back in 1967.

Annie | 3/5/2007, 9:51 am EST

Any song of Guns n Roses

jon | 3/5/2007, 9:03 am EST

not even that into Phish, but “Reba” has some sensational whistle-action.

“It Beats 4 U” - MMJ

“Let You Down” - DMB

Matthew S | 3/5/2007, 8:54 am EST

It has to be Whislte for the Choir by Scottish band The Fratellis.

Jack | 3/5/2007, 8:04 am EST

Dogs - Pink Floyd

L.M | 3/5/2007, 7:50 am EST

Guns N’ Roses has always been my favorite band. I was disappointed when this song came out because it does not have the sound of Guns N’ Roses. It is terrible that Axl Rose makes a new band but keeps the same name. Thats fine Axl can keep his name but the band is terrible now. Velvet Revolver is the band that took the other members of Guns N’ Roses always had Duff McKagan, Slash, Axl Rose, Steven Adler, Izzy Stradlin but now they are terrible since they are missing most of that.

Maggie | 3/5/2007, 5:40 am EST

I think Breakdown is the best of them all, but I wouldn’t mind any other GN’R song to win…

han solo | 3/5/2007, 4:24 am EST

I prefer the Jealous Guy version by Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music. Much better whistling solo.

david huret | 3/5/2007, 4:18 am EST

jealous guy-john lennon
you’ve made a collective fool of yourselves here

Brendan G | 3/5/2007, 3:59 am EST

matt | 3/5/2007, 1:58 am EST

Good call on “Dock of the Bay,” pretty much my favorite song ever.

“Nervous Tic Motion Of The Head To The Left” - Andrew Bird

Frazzell | 3/4/2007, 9:13 pm EST

Like several other readers, I think that Jealous Guy by John Lennon should be top o’ the list. Surprised Rolling Stone didn’t think of it first. Seemed obvious to me.

Lance Swanson | 3/4/2007, 9:05 pm EST

You geniuses have all forgotten about Peter Gabriel’s greatest song, GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS!

Dude | 3/4/2007, 8:54 pm EST

You picked the wrong GNR song: Civil War is much better than Patience.

JD | 3/4/2007, 8:26 pm EST

i don’t really care for the song but what about Winds of Change by the Scorpions. Another whistle song is Bony Maroni by Larry Williams. Also Only Love Can Break a Heart by Gene Pitney.

Moogie Googs | 3/4/2007, 8:03 pm EST

I agree…”Jealous Guy” is the greatest of all time. Your editing staff should take a good look in the mirror and think about what kind of publication you’re TRYING to run there. Also, stop putting horrible, unproven rappers on the front cover of your once great magazine.

Russ | 3/4/2007, 7:40 pm EST

“Reba” - Phish

clemmie | 3/4/2007, 6:40 pm EST

yes, AJ… i can’t BELIEVE “jealous guy” is not on this list!!!! Greatest whistling in a song… ever…

Jonathan | 3/4/2007, 6:11 pm EST

“Masterfade” or almost any song off of Andrew Bird’s The Mysterious Production of Eggs. He’s the best whistler ever. A more recent entry would be “Whistle for the Choir” by the Fratellis.

“Atlanta” - Stone Temple Pilots

Valy | 3/4/2007, 2:08 pm EST

Patience

JFK | 3/4/2007, 2:00 pm EST

Of course, Rolling Stone would ignore anything slightly outre: what about Captain Beefheart in “Harry Irene” - one of the best whistling solos I’ve ever heard, and a great song in its own right. The only good song they picked was Otis Redding.

Jealous Guy- John Lennon

Bangers-n-mash | 3/2/2007, 9:15 pm EST

goodness… Guns-N-Roses… the only reason that Axl was able to whistle so cleanly was because his mouth is permanantly moistened by alcohol. I have no idea how Jealous Guy is not on this list. Oh and if you want world class whistling, go listen to an Andrew Bird album, he practicly uses it as his second voice.
