“Saturday Night Live” Goes Indie! Maybe…

3/2/07, 1:41 pm EST

Snow Patrol

Playing Saturday Night Live is a big deal. Getting booked on the hallowed late-night comedy show has traditionally served as a sort of “you made it” milestone, certifying that a band has attained a level of success sufficient to appeal to an audience that’s been watching the same program every Saturday since 1975. But in what we see as an unusual departure for the show, a collection of not-so-mainstream artists have been musical guests this year, earning the right to add “played SNL” next to “scored effusive Pitchfork review” on their list of accomplishments.

Let’s examine the evidence: On January 13th the Shins performed with host Jake Gyllenhaal, and in doing so became the first Sub Pop band in the label’s history to play SNL. (Nirvana were on Geffen by the time they performed on the show in 1992). February 3rd featured Lily Allen, the British anti-pop star just beginning to build her fanbase stateside, and she was followed last weekend by the genius pairing of host Rainn Wilson with the Arcade Fire. March 17th Snow Patrol will play the show, with host Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

We spoke with veteran Saturday Night Live producer (and the woman in charge of booking talent) Marci Klein about this phenomenon, and she told us it’s all in our heads.

“No matter how you look at it, it’s random,” Klein said, insisting that the bands she books get the coveted SNL nod of approval because they’ve caught her ear. “I never know what label they’re on. I agree that music is kinda good right now,” Klein offers. But in terms of the booking process, she explains that it is, as it always has been, about the music. “I liked Arcade Fire, I played them for Lorne [Michaels,] he loved them too. It’s a feeling you get about one of that bands that should be one of the chosen bands on our show. But I don’t look at the label, I look at the bands.”

Coincidence or not, we’re psyched about any reasoning that allows Arcade Fire to infiltrate the Saturday night plans of our nation’s baby boomers. We’re thinking the Hold Steady should be next, followed by Interpol and the Long Blondes.

Who would you like to see play Saturday Night Live, and with which host would you pair them?

I’d love to see Xenu preform on SNL or The Dust Buckets, Bucket Head and The “New-New” Guns & Roses! Axl has been given a gift to lighten peoples hearts and makes them dance to peace and love! Once you find the solar-system inside your mind, you can smooth to the groove…. But my favorite has to be The Butthole Suffers! Or The Breaders… cool as KIM DEAL!

Bright Eyes, The Hold Steady, Spoon, Wilco, The Apples In Stereo. The list could go on and on. There are so many amazing live bands out there that America needs to wake up and take notice of. If SNL is that vessel, bands like the one I mentioned should take the oppurtunity if it is given to them. I personally think SNL has gotten pretty lame in the last few years, but at least they are having some great acts play. Unfortunately I missed Arcade Fire last week as I am in Iraq, but I’m looking forward to seeing them in DC this May.

I’d like to see Bill Murray and Wilco.

Jeff and Fred Armisen are good friends. It will totally happen with this next wilco record

Bangers-n-mash | 3/2/2007, 9:20 pm EST

All I can say is… even though they’ve been signed to Warner Bros. for ages now, The Flaming Lips need to be on SNL. Not sure if they have been or not already, maybe after She Don’t Use Jelly came out… but gosh darn it… the show needs a big kick in the ass, and the Lips can certainly do it. Oh, and I think Wilco has a new album coming out in a few months, might as well throw them on to promote it sometime then.

[Alex] | 3/2/2007, 7:37 pm EST

Interpol is one of the best bands i have ever known. I hope their new album will be as good or better than antics and turn off the bright lights. good band live and will be great on SNL (NYC). drew barrymore would be great again.

Phil | 3/2/2007, 7:36 pm EST

Interpol already played when it was hosted by Topher Grace. But the Hold Steady are probably the best live band in America and totally deserve to be on SNL. Jim Gaffigan should host.

They should have Arcade Fire play again, and play “Ocean of Noise” followed by “The Well and the Lighthouse”.

T. Rex | 3/2/2007, 6:36 pm EST

i dont really like any of them, except arcade fire. snow patrol sucks. anyway, i would like to see either Tool, Wolfmother, the Raconteurs, or Angels & Airwaves. But SNL is kinda sucky these days, i’d rather watch Letterman.

jungleland | 3/2/2007, 5:29 pm EST

Cold War Kids
Sean Lennon

I have to say, although I appriciate that there are some new indie acts on SNL, can’t say I have been crazy about Arcade Fire or The Shins..but it sure beats another Ashley Simpson

Glad that Snow Patrol will be on. Maybe they will finally make it big here (and stomp the damn Fray)

The fact of the matter is that indie-label acts like the Shins and the Arcade Fire are commanding far bigger audiences than ever before, and that’s mostly a good thing. Neither is among the biggest bands in the land, but the Shins built up enough of a buzz to debut at #2 on the Billboard chart with their latest album, and the Arcade Fire may follow suit next week. With mainstream rock radio almost unlistenably bland and the Internet offering a host of indie media at the click of a button, music fans are looking for alternatives to the ever-contracting playlists of radio and MTV and finding them with bands like these. Ten years ago, with the exception of Liz Phair and a few bands on Epitaph, an indie band couldn’t hope to rack up the sales bands like Bright Eyes, Interpol, and the aforementioned acts command today. SNL is just adapting to the times by booking these acts - bands that SNL’s demographic is actually passionate about. Personally, I think SNL is pretty lame today, but at least they care enough about their hip cachet to book rock bands that don’t sound anything like Nickelback.

Modest Mouse is going to be huge with this album. The Black Keys should get this kind of attention too. Maybe the Decemberists as well. Those are the kind of groups close to big enough to play on that show as far as I can tell.

Scott P | 3/2/2007, 2:31 pm EST

The Thermals would tear that place a new one. I’d also like to see Brand New on there, since their amazing newest album is getting completely ignored otherwise.

baba o riley | 3/2/2007, 2:27 pm EST

god SNL is so lame. conan and letterman have sweet acts like arcade fire and clap your hands say yeah on a regular basis. now SNL finally “hears” arcade fire and follows suit. god, clean the wax out of your ears Marci Klein.
