Dixie Chicks Go Up Against Nemesis At CMT’s, Eat At Justin’s House, And More

  • The nominations for this year’s CMT awards are in. The Dixie Chicks – who’ve had a tenuous relationship with the country music industry since they were essentially boycotted for speaking out against the president back in 2003 – were nominated for two fan-selected awards. The band’s defiant video for single “Not Ready To Make Nice” was nominated for video of the year and group video. Meanwhile, Chicks arch nemesis Toby Keith (who wrote a nasty song directed at the Chicks after their comment) is also nominated for video of the year.
  • We’ve seen a lot of Justin Timberlake’s mom since he brings her as his date to … everything. And we think she looks like a good cook. Which is fortunate for anyone planning to check out JT’s new restaurant, Southern Hospitality, which will be dedicated to the southern style cooking his mama raised him on.
  • Warner Brothers refused to sign Meat Loaf back in the 70s because the singer’s in-office performance reportedly grossed out Mo Austin, the label’s president. “He was repulsed by the band’s in-office performance, which included Meat Loaf ostentatiously making out with singer Ellen Foley during the long Paradise number. It was a catastrophic decision,” writes Gary Marmorstein in his new book The Label.
  • Diddy’s in trouble in England. The rapper has long ago been ordered to stop going by the name “Diddy” in the UK, since another dude has dibs on the (not really that desirable) moniker. But according to BBC News, now the issue is going to the high court.
  • Wolfmother is well on their way to putting together album number two. “We just recorded a song in Vancouver, so that’s pretty exciting,” singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale told Billboard. “It’s called ‘Love Attacker.’ It’s the first (new) song in the year-and-a-half since we recorded the album.”
  • Totally psyched about the news that the White Stripes have indeed been hard at work on a new album. Trying to get equally psyched about the title, Icky Thump.

Hi everyone. I live in england and I’ve noticed you americans make a lot of noise about america being the land of freedom. Yet you persecute the dixie chicks for exercising their freedom of speech for speaking out against, lets face it, a terrible president. I was just wondering, is this kind of thing a regular occurance?

Note: I’m not bad mouthing america or its citizens, I’m just curious.

Jake Burns | 3/1/2007, 12:09 pm EST

You can bad mouth us, any country that elects Mr. Bush, etc.. deserves it.

El Mariachi | 3/1/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Freedom of speech is a two-way street. That’s what people like the Dixie Chicks don’t get. They have the freedom to say what they said, everyone else has the freedom to disapprove of what they said and boycott, stop listening, etc. Personally, I’ve always thought they sucked, and as far as “the incident” goes, I think it’s a little annoying that they’re not moving on and keep trying to make themselves into martyrs for “Freedom of Speech”

Poindexter | 3/1/2007, 12:26 pm EST

Toby Keith is a stupid douche.

TomL,

There are two major cultures in America, which are — more or less — divided by the north and the south. To generalize, the south listens to country music and staunchly supports conservative ideology. Both are deeply rooted in the southern culture. The Dixie Chicks — country artists — went against that ideology and got punished for it. The north is NOT like that at all. The north is generally more progressive and willing to listen to people we disagree with. The north places a greater value on the 1st amendment, and the south places a greater value on the 2nd amendment.

People will disagree with a lot of what I have said, but everyone will agree that there are two distinct Americas. The north didn’t punish the Dixie Chicks like the south did. We just didn’t support them because we don’t listen to that much country music.

The thing about the dixie chicks is that they’re ‘country’ singers. Country singers have always been for Bush and The War in Iraq, it doesn’t have to do with the freedom of speech thing. I know tons of people that’ll never forgive them for what they said, i don’t know why the country industry is trying to make nice. i’m glad ‘ol toby did what he did, wasn’t that freedom of speech is?

Canadian Boy | 3/1/2007, 1:15 pm EST

soryy i didn’t relize that matt already told you how it was

Beansox | 3/1/2007, 1:22 pm EST

Toby has never written a song about the chicks. Get real.

Rollingstone publishes lies.

Penguin | 3/1/2007, 2:36 pm EST

What song do you think Toby wrote about the Chicks? check your facts – there isn’t one. Natalie is the one who insulted his song (and all country fans) when she said that Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue was “stupid”, and continued in that vein by implying anyone who liked the song was a simpleton and also stupid.

As a Country music fan, let me make it clear that I dislike the Chicks because they continue to insult fans by noting that “those are not the fans they want”. The Chicks don’t WANT to be part of the country genre – they only want to be part of some elite, sophisticated genre with which country fans couldn’t possibly identify.

Therein lies my problem – why would any country fan or country station support that attitude? They want my money to pay to see them in a show or buy their CDs? Forget it…I’ll save my money for the artists I appreciate.

This isn’t a freedom of speech issue in my eyes – it’s an attitude and insult issue.

RetroPopZero | 3/1/2007, 4:18 pm EST

So does anyone have any idea exactly when the new Stripes album will be out? The NME article says thats its all recorded and mixed i think, so does anyone have any idea it takes to get a record out after all thats done? I really couldn’t know less about the music industry so any help would be great, this news has gotten me pretty excited.

Judith Marcun | 3/1/2007, 10:28 pm EST

Excuse me. Toby has NEVER wrote a song directed at the Dixie Chicks. Get your freakin facts straight. Nat sang about Toby in the new song, “How can he tell me to shut up and sing”, but he’s never ever wrote a derogatory song, or any kind of song about them. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

Gavin | 3/2/2007, 2:04 am EST

Hey “Judith Marcun”…Natalie was NOT referring to Toby Kieth in the Chicks new song – she’s referring to the idiot who sent her the death threat. Toby Keith was the one had a pic of Natalie w/Saddam Hussein. So get your info straight. FUJM

The irony of the whole Dixie Chicks flap is that they were right. They were right, the French were right, the Germans were right; lots of people were right, but not enough spoke out.

If a few more people in this country had, we would not be in our current situation. Their behavior teaches one to question your leaders, educate yourself on the issues of the day and speak up. It is behavior to be held in esteem, not contempt.

The Dixie Chicks never owed anyone an apology. The president still does.
