Year Zero Project: Fahrenheit NIN

2/28/07, 4:19 pm EST

Trent
Yesterday Nine Inch Nails released a concert DVD entitled Beside You in Time. We thought this meant we were getting a day off from this whole Year Zero Project, but some eagle-eyed NIN message boarder noticed that on the Blu-Ray Edition of the BYIT packaging, in expiration-date lettering, read the words “Secure,” “Broadcast,” “Informatics.” Add a “.com” and voila: www.securebroadcastinformatics.com.

The page resembles a futuristic Yousendit in disrepair. Reconstruct the scrambled puzzle pieces, enter the password “matt26:45-46″ (an appropriate Bible passage) and another site pops up: www.solutionsbackwardsinitiative.com/pilgrims.

With the next site, Trent and the YZ crew have engineered a time capsule from the Year Zero (fifteen years from now). We learn that books are banned, perhaps the reason many of the project’s websites feature hidden text. This time it’s John Milton’s anti-censorship plea Aeropagitica. We also learn that the site operates illegally, as a means for the people of the future to catalog and spread banned art. There’s likewise a bunch of Quantum Physics talk, but that’s out of our ballpark. Maybe one of you is an expert in the space/time continuum? Help us out. What does it all mean?

[Thanks to the NINHotline]

I could say what it all means Many could If we said it together There’d be less holes to the plot
and less chance of being only half-right as we don’t all recieve the same information in life. Trent is Not
a Genius to say so is to belittle everyone that came before him
even almost make their credebility non existant. He has non the less tapped into His third Ear. Which makes it easier to express what can’t just be said. The man is a narcassist and I say not to judge Him. Narcissism is one of greatest curses of Human History and is Probably one of the biggest problems in communication in general. Everybody in Americas Got it. Not by our own fault but by conditioning. They say that those that fall have greater potential to Reach greater Hights. But more struggle in getting past the borderline.
Is he a hero, is he Villain
or is he just a madman with a good hunch. Time will tell.

To that random American guy, Mullet Man:

The record company has nothing to do with it, you fast-food white trash.

Skinny Puppy is a sad little group of ugly people with insignificant ideas that were, then again, stupid enough to molest half of the Sziget festival audience and journalists in 2005.

As for Trent…We have an interview in 13 days, I’ll tell you then…;)

Mullet Man | 3/7/2007, 1:13 pm EST

Thank you record plants for hyping this pop industrial for children and old people too lame to get into Skinny Puppy. Makes for great background music for crappy video games and parents’ S&M workouts. I miss Throbbing Gristle.

um. sorry about the name i chose. im in a random mood. XP well ne ways, I thought those sites were extremely interesting. i agree with the person who’s name is “critical” it sounds like something about sending info back in time mayb to prevent the dictatorship or something. idk. It’s very complex. mayb on the Year Zero record we will learn more about this story from the future. hopefully. Trent Reznor is a GENIUS!

Dilla | 3/1/2007, 1:34 pm EST

I can’t wait for the new music to come out. So far it kicks ass.
Nine Inch Nails always thinking.

charliemapleton | 3/1/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Trent Reznor’s one of the most thorough, influential figures in the rock game and music in general. He’s not afraid to fill you in on what’s going on in his dark, sophisticated world and present it as his beautiful creation.Genius.

Grapes | 3/1/2007, 10:18 am EST

Hopefully all this hype is worth it… I’ve listened to the leaked tracks and they all have really catchy beats but c’mon Trent, get out of this 4/4 spell!

sheep | 3/1/2007, 6:54 am EST

im looking forward to this CD =D.

Critical | 3/1/2007, 2:27 am EST

Sorry Rolling Stone, that was a pretty weak/inaccurate explanation.

Like “mpf” said, it appears they’re researchers and scientists on the cutting edge of physics who decide to put together a clandestine project to contact the past in the hope that they’ll alter the not-so-nice totalitarian and dystopian present they find themselves in. Just take a look at the content of the solutionsbackwardsinitiative.c om/pilgims site. It’s awash in quantum physics talk because they’re physicists! There is discussion and references about the project everywhere. Not to mention the eerie looping live chat session documenting their one successful attempt at sending information back, ending in most or all of them apparently being caught by the authorities.

It’s not just some IRC channel or other “means for the people of the future to catalog and spread banned art.”

Hopefully readers will visit the sites themselves and grok it better than you seem to have.

(Sorry if this is harsh, but the explanation was pretty sad!)

It will be funny if NIN goes to all this trouble and the album sucks.

Adam | 2/28/2007, 9:17 pm EST

Sounds like the idea about sending the music back in time is spot on. This is nuts… Kinda makes you wonder if, with all this effort, the Year Zero Mythos has more in store for us than just a kick ass record.

Jables | 2/28/2007, 8:54 pm EST

Dr. Jackass, Frankenstein was the mad scientist. The monster was the Creature Frankenstein created.

Thanks for the new pics Trent, and for putting the leaked songs on your myspace page.

In physics, spacetime is a mathematical model that combines space and time into a single construct called the space-time continuum. Spacetime is usually interpreted as a four-dimensional object with space being three-dimensional and time playing the role of the fourth dimension. According to Euclidean space perception, our universe has three dimensions of space, and one dimension of time. By combining space and time into a single manifold, physicists have significantly simplified a good deal of physical theory, as well as described in a more uniform way the workings of the universe at both the supergalactic and subatomic levels…

doctor roper | 2/28/2007, 8:04 pm EST

quantum gravity is the field of theoretical physics attempting to unify quantum mechanics, which describes three of the fundamental forces of nature, with general relativity, the theory of the fourth fundamental force: gravity - The ultimate goal of some is a unified framework for all fundamental forces—a “theory of everything”…

quantum mechanics is a fundamental branch of theoretical physics with wide applications in experimental physics that replaces classical mechanics and classical electromagnetism at the atomic and subatomic levels. Quantum mechanics is a more fundamental theory than Newtonian mechanics and classical electromagnetism, in the sense that it provides accurate and precise descriptions for many phenomena that these “classical” theories simply cannot explain on the atomic and subatomic level. Along with general relativity, quantum mechanics is one of the pillars of modern physics…

Probably the most awesome and amazing thing I’ve ever seen.

mpf | 2/28/2007, 6:43 pm EST

a group of programmers at a quantum encryption company (securebroadcastinformatics) have found a way to send information back through time with the hope that we will change their world with the knowledge they send. the year zero songs are banned music from the future.

mpf | 2/28/2007, 6:39 pm EST

actually the hidden text reads “solutions backwards initiative?”, adding a dotcom redirects to the securebroadcastinformatics.com site

I look forward to no album this year as much as this one. Well, this one and the re-release of David Lee Roth’s “Eat ‘em and Smile” sung entirely in Spanish.

Unbelieveable

Colleen | 2/28/2007, 4:33 pm EST

this is way beyond viral marketing now; it’s a campaign to get the nation’s youth back into reading again. Oh, Trent, you noble steed, you!
