QOTSA Enlist Everyone, Everyone’s Mom for New Disc

2/27/07, 10:31 am EST

Now that Audioslave is Cornell-less and Velvet Revolver got snubbed by Rick Rubin, Josh Homme is emerging as the man behind rock’s next great supergroup. The burly-yet-quirky rocker and Craig Kilborn doppelganger has recruited an enticing collection of musicians to work on Era Vulgaris, the new Queens of the Stone Age album out in June. Guest performers are said to include Julian Casablancas, Trent Reznor, Mark Lanegan and Billy Gibbons (!). Check out this appropriately grainy video montage, which shows snippets of in-the-studio action. Something to ponder: Do they all go over to each other’s houses for post-recording mugs of tea? Weirdly, we can kind of picture that.

On the continuum of rock collaborations, where do you think this puppy will fall?

I love Queens, they’re one of my favorite bands…but what exactly is different here?

Last album had Billy Gibbons and Mark Lanegan as well.

This time we get Trent Reznor and Julian Casablancas instead of Shirley Manson and Jesse “I Make A Career out of Ripping on Axl In The Press Every Chance I Get” Hughes.

The album’s still gonna rock, I’m just sayin guests on Queens albums are nothing new.

I dont think its the fact that QOTSA have guests anymore, it just seems that everyone they get to guest kick major ass(Dave Grohl, Dean Ween, Trent Reznor, Billy Gibbons, etc..)

Possibly one of the most under-rated bands of our time.

J-Ho knows how to write a killer rock song. This album will probably one of the best of the year, but Rob Sheffield will give it 3 stars.

Jeff you are quite right….
every queens cd is something new no two are similar man.
thats why the get all the influences from other muso’s and then these guys show them how to play even there old stuff different at gigs and so fourth, newer even. And get new perspectives on the meterial there writing.
They are the best band in the world at the moment hands down!!

In the age of whiny punk/pop rock bands made up of 18-24 year old boys who try to look like they played with Black Flag and The Ramones when they grew up, QOTSA still continues to do what they know best…play actual Rock. They shockingly grow, evolve, experiment and show new and different sounds from album to album; but when it boils down they are just playing Rock. This is why, I feel, that they are owed some honors. They continue to keep us grounded to the music we love and don’t morph their sound into what’s platinum selling on both Top 40 and Alternative stations.

To truly appreciate the genius of Homme and his colloborative check out all volumes of the Desert Sessions (1-10). After listening to them realize that they all volumes are recorded in a weeks’ time with no forethought, only experimentation by the artists involved while they are in the Palm Desert studio.

Album sounds to be excellent. It would be stellar to get Nick back. Oh, and Diamond Dave Catching. With Josh, Nick, Joey, Troy, Dave, and Lanegan, the band would have the strongest lineup by far. I know I left out Dave Grohl, no disrespect. But when it comes to Queens, Joey is as good as Dave (just watch the DVD Over the Hills… live in london). Anyway, let the bashing begin. Oh, and whoever said that about Jesse Hughes needs to F.O. and buy an Eagles of Death Metal album (Death By Sexy, preferably). Can you blame him after that sh#t axl pulled?!? That’s all I got. Peace out, and don’t forget the lost art of keeping a secret.
