It may start as a fashion statement, but those long bangs and dark clothes can quickly mean danger.

Are the police and journalists too stupid to realize those websites are a joke mocking emo?
Turd | 2/27/2007, 4:06 pm EST
Of course the police and journalists are stupid, that’s why they are police and journalists.
emo | 2/27/2007, 4:08 pm EST

It seems like parents and adults are becoming more and more distant from todays youth. Being 15, and around a so called “scene”, this makes me laugh. I am in no way a “scene kid” or “emo” but come on. Of course the whole thing is a tired trend, but cant local media understand certain things? Most of the “emo” kids that i know really feel as if they have life issues which can only be resolved by cutting themselves, which in itself is ridiculous, but to say cutting is a fad is flat out sad.
I guess this disconect is a normal bridge for youth and the middle aged.
I must add that “Emo” is the most farcical label for anything. I know the roots of the term, all the way back to Washington a bit before the grunge movement, but to call anyone with a slight oddity or poetic bug “emo” sickens me.

Emo is the new goth. What will become the new emo?
Theodor Herzl | 2/27/2007, 7:49 pm EST
Are_we_not_men and turd are right, the cops and journalists are absolute morons. The songs and quizzes are just there to humiliate the emos of this world, not create new ones.
TH | 2/27/2007, 7:54 pm EST
possible explanation: emo is new to north dakota, therefore newsworthy?
Anon | 2/27/2007, 7:58 pm EST
Dumbest. Clip. Ever.
burntorange493 | 2/27/2007, 8:29 pm EST
how pathetic is it that a news station would actually take time out of their news cast to talk about ‘emo’? was there NOTHING else going on that day?

Oh My God, I just want to drown in my tears until my soul dries, then I’ll cry my blood, and when that happens, I’ll say that I don’t love you anymore, for I gave you all my love, all the love that I never gave to myself … :’(

I can’t believe I used to be an emo kid. Thank god I came to my senses.
Brett | 2/28/2007, 10:03 am EST
I hate emo’s, but this report is absolutely retarded. Those things thaey found online are jokes making fun of emos. no one brags about cutting themselves. They did n’te even ahve any example of emos killing themselves. Emos are weak cuz they comform to fashion trends and aren’t even depressed like they should be.
Dare To Hear A Fool | 2/28/2007, 10:49 am EST
i think it’s lame that because of stupid high school kids emo has become this. this is NOT emo! emo started as a style of music not an effing culture…

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Wow, Americans really know how to make themselves ook completely stupid.
Seriously, if I was American I’d be totally embaressed.
‘Emo’ kids and ’scene’ kids DONT REALLY CUT
and if they do then they’re the DUMB POSERS
And its stupid that if you cry in public, write a poem (or any type of litrature), express any emotion openly and happen to like certain bands you are emo.
Bollocks!
This was so dumb. Every example used was total bollocks are a joke.
The emo song? seriously…
The ones that cut or commit suicide have real problems.
You might discover that kids not labeled emo cut and commit suicide too.
Anonymous | 2/28/2007, 2:42 pm EST
hahahahahahhahahahahha. the kids dont have a psychological problem.. they only cut for the fashion. …. maybe you should look again. hahahahahahhahahahahhahaa

JUST CUZ SUM1 CUTTS THEMSELF DOESNT MEAN THEY COMMIT SUICIDE IT CAN ACTUALLY SAVE U OR PREVENT YOU FROM KILLING YURSELF!! What? | 2/28/2007, 7:38 pm EST
Adults are taking this whole “emo” thing and blowing it out of proportion. Not every emo kid is cut themselves or commit suicide for “points”. Some of us just like the music and/or being around other kids with the same outlook on the world as you do. It sickens me that of all the world’s problems, emo could be such a priority for this South Dakota news. Journalists today are always taking the latest trends and making it negative. They just trying to scare parents. Adults are SO out of touch!

Well, I’ma miss the brain cells that died watching that.
That isn’t worthy of the regional news.
That isn’t even worthy of being in the town newspaper.
Matt | 3/2/2007, 5:05 pm EST
Emo is a a more modern version of goth…
Emo is for those too whiney to be goth… and appears to be a fasion that stemmed from kids wanting to look punk/goth, but did not want to buy new clothes… instead they just wear what they hadd in 3rd grade after dying it black. Buying clothes that fit right is too much work and it gives them one more thing to whine about.
I don’t care that they cut themselves… that’s fine. Making it a trend, or a fasion idea takes the meaning out of it. I used to cut, and it helped me deal with stuff, but never was it on display, nor mentioned because it was my own personal issues that one needs not bother others with.
Do not blame the journalists… I guarantee they have NO control over what they do stories on… they are puppets that are mere visual representations of the station’s parent company. Corporate crap. Even I knew that half of what they talked about was not true for every Emo, however…
If you get into a fasion trend, you are a slave to it… and you are no longer an individule, so you lose your right to complain when someone can’t tell what “kind” of Emo you are.
My advise to Emos…
Worry not about what you wear… worry about how the hell you are going to survive in the workforce, and hopefully retire in good health. Quit whining, and straighten your stuff out before you’ve spent your whole life complaining about all of the opportunities that you let yourself miss.

If you lived in the middle of nowhere North Dakota, you’d be SAD too. When I was in junior high, thet were called Cure fans.
Anonymous | 3/3/2007, 11:14 am EST
Hmm. Wouldn’t “cutting for the fashion” indicate MORE psychological problems than someone who just cuts?
f***ing lol | 3/2/2008, 11:29 am EST
you do realize that all the sites featured were parody sites, right? there’s no such thing as an “emo scale”. this is one of the most retarded and factually inaccurate news articles i’ve ever had the displeasure of viewing. not that i’m surprised to see it on the Rolling Stone site.
that said, lol @ emo
dsaf | 10/3/2008, 8:13 pm EST
This is so wrong
ShadowFreak | 10/13/2009, 3:12 pm EST
This whole topic is getting blown out of porportion. Instead of blaming the “Emo” kids, why not ask them yourselves what is the big deal. I think the reason people use “Emo” as an excuse for self-multilation is so that the parents of these kids who neglect of abuse their kids can feel better and not blame themselves for their kids dressing in black, cutting themselves, and even commiting suicide. It’s wrong. But only being 16 nobody will listen to me. I am trying my hardest to go public on this.
Jeff | 10/18/2009, 2:13 pm EST
Emo is a manifestation of a mechanistic society raising kids in an environment where they do not feel they have a meaningful relationship with the world around them. Good journalism would have caught that. As indicated by references to the former goth scene, this has been going on in various forms for a long time, but this society seems to be about the best we got as a species so what you gonna do? Beats the hell out fighting to survive in Africa or living under government oppression in China. One day maybe the lame people will all walk into the ocean or the cool people will move to the moon or something and then we’ll have a better life, but in the meantime we can scare the parents with news segments about cutting and suicide.
