“Year Zero” Project Update: Reznor Pisses on Scorsese’s Parade

2/26/07, 4:53 pm EST

Trent ReznorFor a few days, things were relatively quiet on the NIN front. It seemed like Trent Reznor was giving us a weekend break from obsessing over his Year Zero abyss of phantom websites, eerie phone messages and leaked album tracks. But as early as 9 a.m. EST Sunday, fans learned the Nine Inch Nails’ Manchester show would provide another leaked track. (If you have no idea what we’re talking about, this primer should get you caught up on the phenomenon.)

The Manchester clue? As we’ve previously documented, when a pixel blob appears next to one of the songs listed here, fans should be on the lookout for USB drives. At 3 p.m. EST, message boarders learned that a USB drive had been discovered. This time, rather than in a restroom, the drive was hidden under a postcard attached to a crowd barrier. The reward was another Year Zero track called “In This Twilight,” and the next clue in the YZ internovella. (Internet-novella? We just made that up.)

The penultimate song on Year Zero, “In This Twilight” is surprisingly melodic, a showcase for Reznor’s much-improved singing chops. The song hints at surviving an act of terror, a perfect segue to the next website unveiled this weekend: Hollywoodinmemoriam.org Trent Reznor himself reportedly hinted at this page’s existence an hour before it appeared. It’s rumored that Reznor showed up in an NIN chat room Sunday night and said “someone should blow up the oscars” before abruptly signing off. An hour later, the page appeared. The site alludes to a dirty bomb detonated at the 81st Annual Academy Awards and features a bulletin board where families have posted news and information about loved ones who suffered in the attack.

In one key post, an Oscar ballot counter writes that, had the 81st Academy Awards not been bombed, the film Silence would have won Best Picture. What is Silence? It’s newly-awarded Oscar winner Martin Scorsese’s next planned film and is due for a 2008, making it an almost guaranteed nominee for the 2009 Oscars (Has a Scorsese film ever gone un-nominated?) We’re glad you won, Marty, but we’d recommend making other plans for Oscars 2009.

Other interesting notes: Previously, passages from The Hobbit and Slaughter-House Five were part of the motif. This time, Walt Whitman’s “Caution” gets a name-check, as does Stephen King’s The Stand. King’s is another post-apocalyptic story about the struggle of good and evil in a society ravished by disease and terror. In that story, a “Hand of God” literally reaches down to earth, something that parallels YZ album cover star “The Presence.” Shit’s coming full circle.

Does anybody know what’s going on? We have our guesses. What’s the next piece in the puzzle? We’ll keep you informed, if you keep us informed.

Im a long time NIN fan, always have been… Ive got the NIN logo tatooed on my wrist, but that doesnt mean I wont call out a bad song… even if its Reznor, but to be honest, Im only missing 2 Halos, and I can put it every one of them, and totally enjoy every track. I have heard the entire Year Zero Album… and it is fantastic. People that only know songs like “Only” “Closer” and “Head Like A Hole” wont be able to get into it, but the fact there is sooo much to it… Its become its own massive media. Which as an Indipendent Filmmaker, I find astonishing. Reznor is God.

NIN unfortunately has Tool fans, the psuedo-intellectuals working for McDonalds, etc. This is what I believe separates professionals like Trent and everyone else. He wants to do something with his life. NIN fans, do something with your life….so I can quit being a closet NIN fan.

NIN is meant to be enjoyed like a good book, but remember it’s just a book. And maybe not every book an author puts out is good.

and 1994 NIN fans, get over it. NIN is kinda progressive rock…. so progress.

Re: “because I said so.”

I am much perturbed my this child-like reaction to the [long-overdue] “Year Zero” concept album.
It appears many people have grown up conditioned to have an adverse reaction to Depth.

In my experience, what makes music and other Art forms truly masterful and survive the passage of time is the message[s] they pertain. From Plato, Da Vinci, and Crowley to Bob Dylan, Dali and Orwell [regardless of personal opinions regarding their talent or lack thereof] the longevity of their legacy has been phenomenal. Many eyes have been opened thanks to such persons.

.*. depth appears essential to much revolutionary art. By revolutionary art, I mean art which attempts to inspire different/new thought processes in the observer/listener.

As a long-time fan of NIN, I like to think of myself as somewhat “loyal”. A substantial proportion of their music has been a friend to me in the darkest times of my life.
However, I also believe my loyalty is augmented by my constant critical analysis of the music they produce. I agree with “nny” at least to some extent, in so far as one does not need to purchase each and every album/EP and mindlessly and dogmatically rave about how “awesome” it ALL is to be a fan.

In fact, perhaps one should not do so. Perhaps it is this thoughtless abundance of deity-like worship of bands and artists which is slowly destroying the music scene of today.
I do not like ALL NIN’s music.

I do not like ALL the songs I have heard from YZ.

Nonetheless, the concept is being brilliantly administered and I respect Trent greatly for addressing very real issues and at least trying to get people to THINK.

Yes, it’s a marketing ploy. Yes it’s going to appear “scary” to some. But “stupid”? It’s anything but, my friend.

Scrib | 3/2/2007, 11:05 am EST

It seems far to easy to terrify some people. When your challenged to think, you either sink or swim.

To those that liked only one or two songs from any of Trent’s albums, enjoy that empty, sinking feeling your going to have when the new album is fully released. You completely missed the point and intense feeling behind most of his songs, congratulations.

If you’re the one who goes home and cracks open an “ice cold” beer to relax the hard day away or sits his/her ass in front of a TV/video game, again, enjoy the ride to the bottom. While you enjoy that drink, or have two tracks on repeat, Trent (not to mention any other self motivated, highly creative individual in this world) will be pushing on and helping those of us that want to swim, get to the next island.

His music isn’t inspirational to those that don’t understand themselves enough to understand him.

Not everyone has the ability, or takes the time to think about what is actually happening in their brains when they monotonously ask how their co-worker is, as they pass one another in the hall. Just being friendly are we? Whatever, makes you feel better.

There is a very distinct reason that people like Trent succeed. Think about it.

deep throat | 3/1/2007, 6:26 am EST

year zero will turn out to become one of the most important albums of this decade and THE nin masterpiece. it will make everything else that’s on the market look aged and silly. mark my words. have faith!

Robby | 3/1/2007, 3:58 am EST

If this album was released without all of the hidden USB drives and websites, I think it would do just fine. All of this build up is what makes it EXTRA special. This is actually really fun. I can understand why he’s doing it too. He hate’s cds and feels there isn’t enough space on the little disc to express the feeling with album art like you could on a record. He hates the industry. This is something that goes much beyond cover art, this is perfect for him to get out what he wants.

I think a lot of people that KNOW of songs like “Closer” and “Head Like A Hole” look at this stuff and say “whatever” to it. But people that listen and understand songs like “The Becoming”, “And All That Could Have Been” and other great songs you don’t just hear on the radio… the real NIN fans… this project is gold to them.

04-17-07… Be ready.

d | 3/1/2007, 3:08 am EST

“Best album since TDS”.

Personally I thought The Fragile was better. I know, Downward Spiral, breakout album, Closer, the cool NIN album to like, whatever, but The Fragile was just an amazing work of art. These new songs make me want to listen to Broken, though. :)

Which was also amazing.

cpep3d | 3/1/2007, 3:03 am EST

I’m an old ass rocker from way way
back and I thing that NIN is just getting better and better, and always remember half the fun is getting there.

greg | 2/28/2007, 11:37 am EST

i like wuts going on. . its very entertaining for me to find all these websites, phone #s and leaked songs. . .

. . .its just a really fun time to be a NIN fan

Brak | 2/28/2007, 9:43 am EST

Its a concept album, folks. Hes setting up the story. Whats wrong with making good music AND putting a good story with it?

lips | 2/27/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Heh. No one Important, huh?! ;)

spyderlover | 2/27/2007, 5:06 pm EST

this album is so utterly apart from anything else out there, i’m almost embarrassed for most other ‘artists’.

People are Stupid | 2/27/2007, 4:21 pm EST

Sounds like some people have to be stupid. You know, those who always mentions cocks and being a crybaby are mainly those who are closet homosexuals and crybabies themselves.

Other people enjoy this “puzzle”, stop being stupid and say stuff without meanings and justifications.

Cooter | 2/27/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Trent is a crybaby bitch who frequently enjoys young black wang.

Mikey T | 2/27/2007, 2:47 pm EST

who doesn’t like young black wang?

NIN fan | 2/27/2007, 2:29 pm EST

looking forward to this ablum

Cooter's gay | 2/27/2007, 2:28 pm EST

I think its you Cooter who enjoys the young black wang….
…queer

Cooter | 2/27/2007, 12:55 pm EST

Trent enjoys young black wang. That’s why he’s always so depressed.

iloveyouall | 2/27/2007, 12:31 pm EST

In all honesty I hope this is a great album. I am long time fan, but I don’t live in the past. It’s just that Trent’s track record lately has been kind of spotty. Who can really say that The Fragile/With Teeth stuff is anywhere near as good as Pretty Hate Machine/Broken/The Downward Spiral? We are taling like 4 and 5 star albums compared to 3 star albums (in my opinion anyway) I am not trying to get down on Trent but I always buy the new albums (and I will buy the new one) and I am always somewhat let down. I lot of times Trent’s singing and lyrics just don’t sound like he means it, which if he doesn’t he should move away from singing about all the self-hate and what not. Hopefully this new one will do that. Anyway, after all that I am going to run off now to best buy and buy the new dvd.

skinneephat | 2/27/2007, 12:02 pm EST

this is a brilliant campaign, that we all hope to see progress into more than “just an album”. It’s caught everyone’s attention, and though the songs may all get handed to us for free, I believe the fanbase will be eager to pick up the album the day it comes out. There are a lot of tools leaving coments here, that seem caught in the past and want to pigeon-hole the fanbase, but are unable to realize the extent of the NIN audience. Pay attention, this is just the beginning. Actually, this is not just music, it’s an artform in it’s truest means, done in a way we have never witnessed before. So, I suggest you stay tuned and enjoy the ride.

no one important | 2/27/2007, 11:57 am EST

Um, it’s entertainment folks. If it this viral marketing campaign makes you stop and think about the bigger picture, great - it transcends the realm of entertainment and becomes art. Don’t get your panties in a bunch because you don’t “get” how people can become immersed in something like this; it’s called “imagination.” Say it with me now….imagination. Just because you aren’t digging this ride, doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t.

hehehe | 2/27/2007, 11:50 am EST

wow, how can some of you can honestly say this is gonna be his best since TDS when you havn’t even heard the album. I suppose that just goes to show that the marketing stategy is working

ps there is no steam coming out of the record execs ears, they are probably drooling about how many units of crap music this ploy is gonna move…

dcs | 2/27/2007, 11:36 am EST

I don’t understand why some people who clearly are not fans of NIN feel the need to slam the band? Everyone has their own opinions but the difference is nobody cares about yours! - get a life!!

Big Cheese | 2/27/2007, 11:32 am EST

I don’t care how many ticket stubs you have, you’re an idiot. Trent has said it is a new type of artform. Apparently you are too ignorant to understand what’s going on. So sorry for you…

This album will be up there with TDS in my eyes, and the impact of the supporting sites is amazing, it really helps to get the point of the album across. Trent knows what he’s doing.

edsell | 2/27/2007, 11:26 am EST

I’ve been a NIN fan for years. I’m glad that Trent is healthy and creative. I saw them six times last year and can’t wait until the next American Tour. As for the negative comments about the promotion, I guess it is quite predictable that some people would have a problem with it, being that it isn’t Radiohead doing it. Or worse, Fall Out Boy, who are probably going to go down as the greatest band ever. That is, if you read magazine covers and cover your ears during their shows. Blow up everything Trent, it all needs to be rebuilt again.

Charlie Miller | 2/27/2007, 10:58 am EST

I’m really struggling to figure out why three or four (or maybe just one obsessive guy) people take such offense to this idea that, ultimately, does them no harm.

Seriously, a good number of us enjoy this, so what? Is it actually necessary for you guys to post on here with your big headed ideas about what’s good and bad in music?

Seriously, this is childish.

Allison | 2/27/2007, 10:55 am EST

I’m gonna guess that Trent’s been watching a bit too much LOST.

theman | 2/27/2007, 10:22 am EST

try not to take it too seriously its just like a film that hasnt been made yet,no need to get scared its an original way to release an album at least.NIN ROCK!!!

Lobsters | 2/27/2007, 10:21 am EST

He should put all that time and energy into working on music. Yeah, “working on music”. Remember that? They used to do that back in the Sixties and Seventies.

Mickey G | 2/27/2007, 9:51 am EST

seriously though if another band tried to pull off this sort of viral marketing i honestly dont think it would be so fun or interesting, plus the deliberate song leaks are the icing on the cake, i think if all thes pages were cropping up but nothing from the album were there for the sites to be giving context to, well it would just be hollow and dull… anyway rock on nails for being legends, and nice one rolling stone for makin the article

Bradley | 2/27/2007, 8:51 am EST

Nine Inch Nails has always been a creative band that pushed the envelope both musically and artistically. This has to be the most creative form of advertising I’ve ever seen. Very brave. I wonder what the record execs are saying? I can imagine them having red faces with steam spewing from their ears.

MATT4P | 2/27/2007, 8:49 am EST

One of the only artists around these days that pushes music forward.

donnie from rome | 2/27/2007, 6:38 am EST

mmmmm.. cool

nny | 2/27/2007, 5:48 am EST

“nine inch nail fans are not easily pleased. you make us sound like idiotic zombies(conformist).Trent is just talented and beautiful.”

HAHAHAHAHAHA! NIN and Tools fans are KNOWN for their idiotic, zombie-like, traits. The question is, could they be any EASIER to please? I love NIN and Tool too, but not every song. I don’t own every Halo, because most of them are filler, and they suck (see: every EP/single release). Here’s a typical example of a NIN fanboy/girl.

“Trent is a master of music;as always…but,I didn’t hear too much difference this time in the re-mix’s.
But-I still feel it was worth my cash!!!!
Bramwell.” - from amazon.com reviews for the head like a hole single

What?!?!?! 11 nearly identical tracks and they’re all AWESOME!!! I hate fanboys. They’re just as artisitally demorallizing as Bittney, boy bands, or any of the other countless scapegoats these Hot Topic rats so frequently piss and whine about.

jollydwarf | 2/27/2007, 1:21 am EST

“The Stand” is EXACTLY what I thought of when I saw the cover art for “Year Zero”. “Look, Stu, it’s the Hand of God.” Or something like that. I wonder if there’s a coy “Flagg” reference imminent. I’m sorry I’m missing out on the fun.

WarHand | 2/27/2007, 12:49 am EST

Hey BECAUSE I SAID SO……….

Great post man, I’m a long time NIN fan and I also think this is a little much. Again GREAT POST.

Hey Trent, We don’t want these gimmicks, just give me something Near as good as The Downward Spiral and I will keep listening. I just wish it was the summer of 94′ again I guess.

jackybruce | 2/27/2007, 12:42 am EST

hehe i mean fans, i must be like 14 or something judging from ma spellin’

jackybruce | 2/27/2007, 12:40 am EST

christ are all the nine inch nails fan these days like 14 or something, how lame, trent should of hung it up like 10 years ago…

James | 2/27/2007, 12:07 am EST

I take offense to the NIN fans are easy to please comment, I am a huge fan, but I found just one good track on the With Teeth album (The Hand That Feeds), if NIN fans are “easy” to please, I should have enjoyed the whole album, right ?

autum aurora | 2/27/2007, 12:00 am EST

nine inch nail fans are not easily pleased. you make us sound like idiotic zombies(conformist).Trent is just talented and beautiful.

Bonogamy | 2/26/2007, 11:40 pm EST

Trent just seems to be using unorthodox ways to promote an album. They’re creative and different, and give the fans something to do with their free time, but in the long run it’s just marketing. What will matter is how the album sounds in it’s entirety, when it’s just a CD in your player or a bunch of files on your hard drive.

“Officially” leaking tracks like Trent’s doing is just another way of pre-releasing singles. The beauty of a leaked track is that it happens against the artist’s will. That isn’t the case here.

Almost no promotion scheme this awesome ever live up to expectations. If Trent were anyone else the album would be a monumental let down guaranteed. But NIN fans are easy to please.

John | 2/26/2007, 10:29 pm EST

Has Scorsese film ever gone
unnominated,I hear you ask?Correct
me if I’m wrong,but I’m sure all
his pre-”Alice Doesn’t Live Here
Anymore” weren’t Oscar nominated,
and I think “The Last Waltz”,”The
King Of Comedy” and “After Hours”
might’ve missed out too.

yo | 2/26/2007, 9:29 pm EST

thats the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard. who the hell does he think he is?

eric | 2/26/2007, 8:12 pm EST

haha ravished by disease. i like that.

trent reznor is sweet and i’m glad RS is covering this awesomeness.

what a great way to end the monotony of a band promoting an album in the same old way. this is new and exciting and a welcome treat for hardcore fans.

Because I said so.... | 2/26/2007, 8:08 pm EST

This little marketing ploy is kinda getting fuckin scary. And I’m a HUGE, HUGE 15 yr fan of NIN. BUT, maybe I’m old, maybe I don’t get it, but to me it seems to be gettin just a little fuckin too hardcore. Dirty Bomb, Oscars, gimme a break, this just music, FUCKIN GREAT MUSIC, but it is just music. Relating terror and an album release is fuckin lame. The marketing department at NIN INC. (Or whomever the fuck is in charge)had been doing a fuckin brilliant job with this genius idea for pushing this new album UNTIL, this new chapter in Year Zero’s album campaign. Now it’s stupid. And to all you bent little wanna be goth geeks sitting in your parents basement who think the end of the world is coming and that think this is cool…..it’s not. And if you don’t think I’m a fan for that, FUCK OFF, I’ve got 13 ticket stubs from 13 differen’t NIN shows. So Flame away, but all I say is END OF THREAD.

drogo | 2/26/2007, 7:53 pm EST

The term is “ravaged” not “ravished”. You’re talking about damage to society, not the kissing and fondling of a woman’s neck. Sorry to nitpick, but you’re supposed to be the pro here.
