The (White) Rapper Show: Only Place You Can See a White Guy Ask Grandmaster Flash, “What’s Pimpulatin’?”

2/26/07, 1:16 pm EST

white rapper showHallelujah, holla back! Even by VH1 reality-show standards, Ego Trip’s The (White) Rapper Show is some seriously skin-crawling shit. It’s the only place on TV you can see a white guy who calls himself “King of the Burbs” step on Grandmaster Flash’s front porch, shake the great man’s hand and say, “What’s pimpulatin’?” It’s the latest master jam from the ever-hilarious Ego Trip dudes, sticking ten white MCs in a South Bronx crib. Everybody’s favorite has to be John Brown, who declares, “I’m not a rapper, I’m an entity.” He walks around saying, “Ghetto Revival!” and “King of the Burbs, baby!” If I were a ghetto, I’d be feeling pretty revived right around now.

The (White) Rapper Show (alternate title: Honky’s Open Doors) is hip-hop if you only knew about it from watching other VH1 reality shows: no music, no clever rhymes, just meathead clowns threatening to pop each other. What a crew: 100 Proof, the Southern biker dude with the mohawk; country girl G-Child; and Sullee, a Boston Irish guy who gets a couple of drinks in him and then starts trying to kill everybody, which may or may not be hip-hop but is definitely awesome. Then there’s Persia, who can’t remember her rhymes but thinks she’s a rap star anyway because she can wave a dildo and call people “niggas.” Shooting whitefish in a barrel? Yeah, but it’s still more fun than listening to the Game album.

In classic Ego Trip style, the show riffs on racial issues with flip gags, like calling the crib “White House” and labeling the wastebasket “white trash.” They humiliate the contestants with hazing challenges that have nothing to do with hip-hop (pushing shopping carts? hitting piñatas?), but, hey, anything to keep them from rapping. MC Serch lectures the kids about hip-hop while they look at him like, “Right, sir. When do the bitchez show up?” Thing is, they’re not allowed to smoke weed or shoot suckers or even play music in the crib, so they just look bored. No cream, no bling — what is this, freakin’ indie rock? Serch is the right host because he takes it all so seriously — he’s stuck in an Eighties time warp, where “step off” is a fresh catchphrase and nothing ever happened outside New York. Poor dude bullies the out-of-town kids like his feelings are hurt about something (possible clue: nobody ever mentions the Beastie Boys). It’s kind of touching when the contestants band together, like when Sullee and Jon Boy walked out on the snitching challenge. But John Brown, you can’t fade him. His MySpace page has history-major info about the 1850s abolitionist John Brown — another Ghetto Revival rapper is named Dred Scott. I love how J.B. keeps his cool when everybody gets in his grille. He never takes the bait; he just shrugs and says, “It ain’t easy being King of the Burbs, baby.” No doubt — America is ready to get Revival Minded. Soon, we will all be pimpulatin’.

This white boy says: It’s a simply wonderful show to watch while eating foire grois together with a dry chardonnay. I could only imagine what the “darker” folks in the Bronx must think. I shan’t travel outside of Manhattan.

Sunny | 2/26/2007, 1:35 pm EST

I’m pretty sure the show has mentioned the Beastie Boys several times….

ishy with it | 2/26/2007, 1:51 pm EST

Man, this show is just stupid. Like we need anymore tension with race in hip hop. These folks getting humiliated on this show are just reinforcing stereotypes. Look at Shefield, now, thinking he’s down cos he saw some guy as goofy as him rapping on tv.

Niko | 2/26/2007, 2:02 pm EST

Rob, why no mention of Shamrock? is he that boring to you?

and Sunny, the beasties never were mentioned on the show. i’ve been waiting.

Joe | 2/26/2007, 4:45 pm EST

MC Serch in the heezy fo sheezy.

charliemapleton | 2/26/2007, 6:20 pm EST

It was one of the most clever, spontaneous shows ever in TV history. My idea of a superstar star in the making was Persia. If you take the confidence and resilence(lyrically and personally) of Queen Latifah and the cunning,i’m-not-playin’ attitude of Tisha Campbell,it would be conjured up to this talented misses.Plus she’s sexy!

charliemapleton | 2/26/2007, 6:25 pm EST

By the way,I hope Shamrock aces it tonight. In the words of his fellow ATLien,Young Jeezy,”Let’s get it!”

cody | 2/27/2007, 11:07 pm EST

john brown should have won,hes the true mc

DEFT | 2/28/2007, 9:33 am EST

JB should have won. His track was way more original and what Hip-Hop really is. Shamrock on the other hand, not to take anything away from him, is more new era where JB is more old school. I mean that last track JB did was creative, deep, and also political. It just wasnt just some BS.

DEFT | 2/28/2007, 10:03 am EST

OH YEAH, also wanted to mention that the judge that was in blue and wearin the sunglasses he is a dumass. He says that its not all about lyrics anymore its about making tight beats, well he is a FOOL for saying that. That is why HIP-HOP is watered down like it is today. But there is a few chosen artists that still keep it real and know that the lyrical content holds more water because its the message for the youth! Its about making money to most, but its about THE MOVEMENT to a few. That is what Hip-Hop is all about.

Dirty D | 2/28/2007, 5:13 pm EST

Does anyone think the reason why JB was so quite around his tight shirted “friend” was because his friend my have been his boyfriend? Seriously when that dude came into the picture JB looked surprised and scared like his cover might be blown. Maybe that’s why most folks in the White house felt like he was fake. Maybe he was just in the closet. Not that there’s anything wrong withh that.

The show was good. A great representation and attempt to reinvigorate what makes hip hop such an great culture for future generations to embrace. Unfortunately the corporate culture and greed has twisted it into something that hopefully wont last — this show Brings us back to the essence

Oh hell yeah — It seemed hella obvious.. and suddenly i realized JB used tweezers to sculpt his eyebrows. Then it all made sense. This fool wasnt clueless and stupid he was just Gay and trying is hardest to hide it. C’mon the producers had to know or have a hunch and probably wanted to bring that element into the show to see if JB would be the first out of the closet emcee, but he wasnt trying to sh*t where he was eatin… hey but he did well much respect to JB for makin it that far without anyone known he was Gay… too bad he didnt represent — everything taboo in hiphop… but it was hella funny when that tight shirt guy showed up John was like oh shh like when you wake up next to a female after getting phaded and its your girlfriends bestfriend type of thing… John Busted Brown — King of the (clear throat) …

charliemapleton | 3/1/2007, 12:41 pm EST

There was some sort of speculation that John Brown is gay,or that he ACTUALLY is?Damn mack, what sources do you have?

Wrong Again Rob. | 3/3/2007, 6:12 pm EST

I like disagreeing with Rob Sheffield. I know he’s passionate about pop culture. However, he tends to praise the lame and bash the good. He does it again with “The White Rapper Show”. First of all, I’m not a big fan of reality shows or hip hop. So, it’s a big surprise to me I ended up liking this show.

First of all, you got to appreciate how they show the history of hip hop with respect instead of being self-righteous and boring.

The cast of the show is a cross-section of hip hop. From the P. Diddy wannabe of John Brown to the just plain wannabe of Jus Dat. I’m glad that Shamrock won. He comes across as guy honestly passionate about hip hop. His performance reflected that. I was rooting for Persia. I would buy her albums if she ever get a record deal. I don’t know if I can describe her appeal. She is like Mama Cass of hip hop. Not tradionally beautiful, but she is honest and really talented. Too bad they didn’t let her use her notes during the elimnation round. I think she would have won over the crowd and the judges in the final episode.

this show was bullshit,
I am getting real tired of VH-1 who never showed a black video after 9 am a little less than 10 years ago, and certainly no hip hop, crack jokes about Black stereotypes and then award 100,000 dollars to the person who upheld them best.
Bullshit, Bullshit, Bullshit,
we need to wake up from the media brainwashing

Justin | 3/5/2007, 11:54 pm EST

As a Mc I thought this show was stupid and didn’tunderstand how the guys on it had no Idea they were bein played out for laughs…like they didn’t understand the show was makin fun of white mc’s pretty much…and John Browns song at the end was wack ain’t no body gettin killed for cars in the suburbs cause everyones got a Benz…not to mention the mother fucker just stood there….the only one who was good lyricaly was Persia but she couldn’t remeber her ryhmes half the time the show was retarded and I agree we definetly don’t need any more Race tanison in hip-hop

ms. sweet | 3/7/2007, 1:31 am EST

i think the show was entertaining. there was some talent there. by far the most intriguing would be john brown, he seems creative, talented, intelligent and has political knowlegde. the man isnt rapping about booze, chicks and budz. we need to see/hear more of JB. oh yea, that producer, total idiot, true hip hop’s essence is lyrics as well as melody, what a dumb statement he made about lyrics dont matter. its sad thats the mentality producing and mass marketing music that has no substance and no responsibility. As far as serch goes, he meant well but he sold out. and what the f*** did some of those stupid challenges have to do with finding a talented white rapper??
