Lunchtime Poll: Save a ’90s Has-Been

2/22/07, 11:17 am EST

Jamiroquai Heather

You’re driving in your car/grocery shopping/waiting in line at the post office when that song comes on the radio. Suddenly you are overwhelmed with nostalgia for a time and place when thrift store flannel and Gap jeans were the height of fashion. You go home, put on the Singles soundtrack and are searching eBay for abandoned cases of Crystal Pepsi when a rock genie descends from the sky and invites you to permanently alter the way a certain now-kitschy-at-best ’90s star/band is perceived. Who do you save from a life defined by I Love The ’90s references?

Not. Fucking, Jamiroquai. You’re lucky in America, he’s gone for good. The bastard keeps releasing identikit albums in the UK!

Gooey | 2/22/2007, 11:41 am EST

FIRST!!!

Glovy | 2/22/2007, 11:45 am EST

Good for you Gooey, now say something important for a treat.

charliemapleton | 2/22/2007, 11:48 am EST

The teenagers/twentysomethings from the Gap commercials. From their rendition of Donovan’s “Mellow Yellow” to the bangin’ dance numbers, they proved that a suddenly, mysteriously disrespected fashion brand has more swagger than ever.Remenmber the one commercial(entitled “Khaki Soul”)when they were groovin’ to “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers?I mean, who wouldn’t want to work out a thick honey in tight khakis(in my case,if she was twentysomething)?

B-Rett | 2/22/2007, 12:18 pm EST

OASIS.
One of my favorite bands of all time, and still immensely popular in the UK, but has tragically declined in the US for some rediculous resons.

Their next album is their comeback, I KNOW IT!

Will | 2/22/2007, 12:19 pm EST

Where do I begin…
-Sister Hazel
-Del Amitri
-Gin Blossoms
-Hootie & The Blowfish (although I’ve since heard they’re going to be touring again)
-Boyz II Men

And now I want to watch Reality Bytes and Batman Forever while eating Dunkaroos (y’know, since they were so new then).

This keeps me awake in class | 2/22/2007, 12:30 pm EST

oh sure, that works.

manda lu | 2/22/2007, 1:17 pm EST

oh god EVERCLEAR is for sure.. also paula abdul no matter how crazy she is now it is all derived from the 90’s coke filled years of pop dance songs. but they were catchy friggin song to say the least, “my foot caught in the slamming door, what about the information please!?!??”

Jim | 2/22/2007, 1:25 pm EST

Terrence Trent D’Arby doesn’t change his name, and make grand pronouncements, and then puts out a CD that’s Otis Redding/Prince/The Beatles rolled into one big psychedelic, soul, funk masterpiece!

Jim | 2/22/2007, 1:28 pm EST

Fine Young Cannibals come back skanking and popping their way back into our hearts and dance floors.

MTV’s Real World, 90’s style. When the cast members provided substance and entertainment. Unlike the parade of slutty drunkin nimrods on the show currently.

J-Hock | 2/22/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Chumbawamba, Eagle Eye Cherry, Blind Melon, Dishwalla, Blues Traveler, Jimmy Ray, and Celine Dion… (that’s a joke btw)

Anonymous | 2/22/2007, 2:09 pm EST

LEM, “Steal My Sunshine” :)

love that song

JM | 2/22/2007, 2:16 pm EST

MTV needs to bring The State back. ASAP.

name here | 2/22/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Although I lived for the 90s revivial of punk via grunge music, I think I’m ready for another go-around at the swing revivial. What’s Brian Setzer been up to?

harry | 2/22/2007, 3:06 pm EST

Dimebag Darrell (I know he is dead, but still…)
and Saved by the Bell (it started in the 80’s, but what the hell)
Gotta agree with confidential on the old style Real World/

Interesting photo choice... | 2/22/2007, 3:17 pm EST

I’m curious.

Why’d you chose Jamiraquai for the photo? Did you know they had one of the best selling albums of the year in the UK in 2006? Sure it was a “Best of” compilation, but still, they’ve got some crazy loyal fanbase out there. I don’t like them myself, and I don’t know why they sold so many records, but they did, and that’s a fact.

Also noteworthy… Timbaland was in discussions to produce their next record! I’m not making this up!

So…

Hunter | 2/22/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Oasis will NEVER make a comeback in the USA…

Oasis fans don’t seem to get it… the USA *HATES* Oasis. The general thought on them ranging from the most indie indieish snobs to the biggest Fall Out Boy fans & everything in between is that Oasis sucks – that won’t change, deal with it Oasis fans.

Joe | 2/22/2007, 3:40 pm EST

Candlebox, Buckcherry, Silverchair, Soundgarden, Garbage

Lobsters | 2/22/2007, 3:58 pm EST

I was thinking about The New Radicals the other day. I liked their Big Cheesy Hit Single. That guy is a Big Shot Producer-Songwriter these days.
Was wondering about Cornershop, too. That was a good record.

r from r | 2/22/2007, 4:21 pm EST

You can flush almost all ’90s music down the toilet, but I’d like to see Winona Ryder get her acting career back…

lik roper | 2/22/2007, 4:41 pm EST

i dream of genie…

Rob C | 2/22/2007, 5:14 pm EST

Scatterbrain. Used to be Ludichrist in the 80’s

Bunny | 2/22/2007, 6:04 pm EST

I think I’d have to save Crash Test Dummies, Blues Traveler, and The Mighty Mighty Bostones.

Chuck | 2/22/2007, 6:56 pm EST

I personally would LOVE to see silverchair get the credit in the U.S. they deserve for their AMAZING recent works because they are far greater than the early grunging they were popular for.

charliemapleton | 2/22/2007, 7:20 pm EST

The State indeed. It would be tight if they combined the cast members of Reno 911! that didn’t appear on The State with the original State alumni that’s on Reno 911!-that would be fire.Barry and Levon was the most notorious out of any character or characters,so give them their shine again.”Aw yeah!”

thewufs | 2/22/2007, 7:20 pm EST

Can we dispense with the godawful one-hit wonders?

Mind you, I don’t mean ALL of them folk that only had one hit during the Clinton administration, just the bad bad bad ones. I mean, Del Amitri? Crash Test Dummies? Dishwalla? Sister Hazel? What are you guys, high?

Don’t know if they’re purely ’90s, but we need the whole Wu-Tang Clan back. Shoot, Digital Underground exist as a footnote to Tupac Shakur’s career and that’s a shame. Courtney Love should get Hole back together. Smashing Pumpkins were great until Billy Corgan decided he was Roger Waters long about 1995 (let’s hope he abdicates his position as the George Lucas of alt-rock before putting out the new record. Somebody call Butch Vig…). And I know I really shouldn’t like them so much, but I’d love to see Stone Temple Pilots make another record. Lord knows it couldn’t be any worse than Velvet Refrigerator or whatever.

Graham | 2/22/2007, 7:22 pm EST

Definitely Hootie and the Blowfish. I know that “Cracked Rear View” got played to death, but it is a solid pop-rock album that really encapsulates the mid-90’s. I hadn’t heard it for years until recently and really dug it.

donhenleysnewleatherhandbag | 2/22/2007, 7:26 pm EST

Smashing Pumpkins, pre-Mellon Colley and the Infinite Sadness ( i always hated that misspelling) and with Billy Corgan taken down a few notches on the crazy meter

charliemapleton | 2/22/2007, 7:30 pm EST

As much as I hate to label these still notorious pop culture figures as hasbeens because really, they particularly, ultimately made an impact, old school Nickelodeon and Club MTV.

steve | 2/22/2007, 7:41 pm EST

Hit the dial to 1991, juice up the flux capacitor, meet Mr. Cornell, tell him that when he meets Mr. Morello, RUN and stick with Thayil & Co.

K | 2/22/2007, 8:54 pm EST

totally down with saving silverchair, bush(x?), old muchmusic (when they played music videos), beavis and butthead, lisa loeb, veruca salt, killjoys… there are too many to list really….

blackbottom | 2/22/2007, 9:47 pm EST

King’s X
Spice Girls
Guns & Roses
Alice In Chains

SM | 2/22/2007, 11:14 pm EST

Sister Hazel, Gin Blossoms, Bush (still amazing, by the way–the band, not the president!), Counting Crows, Hootie and the Blowfish, Collective Soul, Third Eye Blind, Spin Doctors, Blind Melon……and just for fun…..Hanson!! :)
I really do enjoy ’90s music….

hey joe | 2/23/2007, 12:19 am EST

Jane’s Addiction, totally underated.

. | 2/23/2007, 12:31 am EST

The cardigans

John Heckman Wright | 2/23/2007, 12:59 am EST

POE (definitely Poe)
Hole

cheesecrop | 2/23/2007, 6:17 am EST

Beyond the one shot artists I’m not sure the 90’s are perceived as being kitschy at all. There’s probably a few things I could do w/out. In the Terminator when the computer realizes it’s been beaten it sends a robot back in a last effort to wipe out the kid via mom who would bring it down. I’d have a band waiting circa 92-95 roughly, prepared to leap forward to now and be prepared to have a pile of hits. Maybe somebody like the Screaming Trees or Dinosaur Jr., who should have had more hits then. They’d both have multiple #1 albums for probably a good decade to come if the situation stays like this much longer.

The Greek | 2/23/2007, 7:39 am EST

Duh! Cobain.

Meddle | 2/23/2007, 9:31 am EST

What a question! I’d have to bring back STP, NIRVANA, & Guns & Roses. But as for the One Timers’: Blind Melon, REM, Ugly Kid Joe, PM Dawn, oh, dont forget Four Non-Blondes!!!

peteroneil | 2/23/2007, 10:39 am EST

Blind Melon for sure

Christy | 2/23/2007, 12:14 pm EST

I think the bands that were kitschy in the ’90s were the same as in the ’80s. Blind Melon deserves more recognition than “that Bee Girl video.”

tyrone | 2/23/2007, 12:42 pm EST

how about temple of the dog

Brewhaha | 2/23/2007, 5:25 pm EST

Helmet!

Rod | 2/23/2007, 9:04 pm EST

I would say:

- Soul Coughing
- Public Enemy
- REM (Face it, they’re has-beens)
- Oasis
- Morphine (RIP, Mark Sandman)
- Ween
- Ed’s Redeeming Qualities
- Deb Pasternak
- Vitamin C
- Gin Blossoms

blinmelon | 2/24/2007, 1:28 pm EST

days of the new.

Gabe | 2/24/2007, 7:06 pm EST

Anybody remember Trip Shakespeare (the guys from Semisonic, before Semisonic)? They were incredible, they should come back.

iainttalkinfastujuzlisteninslo | 2/24/2007, 10:45 pm EST

well i dont think nirvana counts cuz noone in their rite mind denies their geniousness(sry if dats not a word but if it is oviously i dont posess it) but i wud just like cobain to be alive again…the world wud definetly be a better place and my generation(im 15) needs someone like him to speak to us. but as for the ones witout da respect ima haf to say..and i kno ill get smacked for it..but britney spears. wether u like her or not, u cant denie that she is the queen of pop and secretly u want her to comeback mariah carey style.or maybe all this pain will lead to some music on a nirvana scale. maybe shes da next cobain…wow im goin to hell for that one lol and while im at it bring back 3lw,spice girls, and MOST FUCKING IMPORTANTLY because it is not impossible..NO DOUBT!!!!!

iainttalkinfastujuzlisteninslo | 2/24/2007, 10:56 pm EST

seriously didnt gwen say this solo thing was just a little one time side project???am i wrong??didnt think so. also i almost forgot EVERCLEAR. also mystical(who eitha jus got out jail or is bout to), nelly, tlc, macy gray, and destinys child…wich is false hope i kno but at least they all been makin sum killer music anyway. and god knows the boys from otown are tryin…

iainttalkinfastujuzlisteninslo | 2/24/2007, 11:05 pm EST

Helvis | 3/1/2007, 8:39 am EST

Clawhammer
Geggy Tah
Chuck Dukowski’s Fishcamp
The Mentors
Primal Scream
Black Grape

Hoyle | 3/2/2007, 8:46 am EST

Hunter,

the US hates oasis because modern American music fans have NO TASTE in music…Fall Out Boy? Green Day? Justin Timberlake? None of these acts does anything original. It’s all power chords and self-loathing lyrics. Oasis was and IS the real deal.

Katie | 3/23/2007, 10:29 pm EST

I’d have to say nirvana…yeah i know they’ll be known as the defining band of the nineties for years to come but i think thwy could have had so many more albums and such if they had more time…and kurt shouldn’t have died…*cough* courtney killed him *cough* he was a good kid he was.
