- Shocking: According to Blabbermouth, Chinese Democracy’s previously half-confirmed release date, March 6th, has been retracted. Guns “associate” Del James has reportedly commented on the album’s status, saying: “The good news is that all of the recording for the album has been completed…There is no official release date, as the band is currently mixing, but after some delays and scheduling difficulties, things appear to be moving along.” Mmm k.
- Fallout from Van Halen’s cancelled tour continues: Rhino has apparently put the (hopefully temporary) kibosh on releasing Van Halen’s Best Of (1978-1984). The disc was set to be the first VH compilation to focus exclusively on the band’s years with David Lee Roth. Sniff.
- Shins frontman James Mercer has reportedly said that much of Wincing the Night Away was inspired by his experience living in a crack-riddled neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. “I did finally move when the police started raiding their house and the neighbors blamed it on me.” Good call.
- Deerhoof = the coolest band ever, and you can tell because they inspire their fans to do the weirdest, most creative shit. The NME reports that the PE and music/drama teachers at North Haven Community School in Maine have arranged a ballet interpretation of the band’s Milk Man album, which is now being released on DVD.
- Nevermind, maybe My Morning Jacket can rival Deerhoof for most inventive rockers of the…something. The band has announced they are hosting a two-night prom in Athens, Georgia, and the 40 Watt Club on March 6th and 7th. Will the theme be “Under the Sea”? Yes, yes it will. The full details are on the band’s site, but apparently “There will be cake, balloons, fishnets, classic cars, chaperones, spankings, and a whole lotta shakin goin on.” Nice. [via Pitchfork]
