Clip of the Day: Save the Wrist Shot, Save the World

2/21/07, 3:10 pm EST

Remember hockey? You wouldn’t know it from the ratings, but there’s still a professional hockey league out there, and this go-go-Gadget-arms save is the sickest highlight we’ve seen in ages. (For any closet Canucks keeping score at home: That’s Calgary Flames goalie Fred Brathwaite.)

hockey tends to be popular where it is cold alot, like up north in canada – but to most others it is nothing but hokey…

More Hockey!!! | 2/21/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Can’t get enough Hockey at Rolling Stone!!!!!!! You’re the greatest (not Wayne Gretzky). Really. You are.

jeff | 2/21/2007, 5:51 pm EST

I’d like to take a moment and point out one reason why hockey is the best sport in America.

Did you notice hwo much celebrating was done after the save? None. If that was basketball or football, after that type of play was made there would be 15 minutes of showboating and disgusting celebration.

eric | 2/21/2007, 6:19 pm EST

i don’t watch hockey…or much of any televised sports…or much televised anything at all….but that was some sick shit.

From Canada... | 2/21/2007, 6:29 pm EST

that clip is a good 5+ years old….Fred Brathwaite isn’t in the NHL. The flames don’t have those jerseys now for over 4+ years….Well done Rolling Stone WELL DONE!

Mojoryder | 2/21/2007, 6:48 pm EST

Nice highlight … too bad it’s about six years old … Fred Brathwaite plays in Kazakhstan now … something to do with a trade for Borat.

Hockey may not be burning up the ratings like the bling obsessed NBA but it sure as hell ain’t hokey.

Ainge | 2/21/2007, 6:59 pm EST

I’d much rather watch rednecks name Dale turn left for 5 hours, or coked up felones show boat in endzones, or spoiled narcissists bitch slap each other on the courts and the mounds. Actually on second thought maybe I’ll stick to a class sport where players play

exposureofmorons | 2/21/2007, 7:15 pm EST

its amazing how ignorant people can be from not realizing there is a “hockey league” out there to not realizing that this clip happened a very long time ago. (by the way this hockey game took place in Detroit, Michighan.)
just because you do not watch a sport does not mean it is not enjoyed by millions elsewhere.

for any closet yankees out there…you are not the center of the universe….there is more to sport than driving in circles and celebrating in endzones.

Socrates | 2/21/2007, 8:17 pm EST

anyone who can skate on ice and handle a puck while trying not to get decked by others trying to label you is all right with me.

red | 2/21/2007, 8:46 pm EST

keep your stick on the ice.

B-Rett | 2/21/2007, 9:36 pm EST

DAMN!

blackadder | 2/21/2007, 10:07 pm EST

hockey is seriously the funnest sport I can think of to play. Go try it, or at least try the floor version

Mojoryder | 2/21/2007, 10:23 pm EST

With the lowest paid player in the NHL being paid $335K per annum and the highest up around 9 mil .. and 690 total players on the NHL roster … it’s blowing the doors off the music industry in terms of revenue so it can’t be doing that badly.
Somebody’s paying attention out there …
… at least until somebody finds a way to download a really good hip check.

GO SENS GO!

JerzeeGirl | 2/21/2007, 10:37 pm EST

Too bad you guys haven’t caught up to some more recent unbelievable plays than Freddie’s. Nice to give a shout out to one of the most challenging, demanding and interesting sports on the planet tho where the men who play are not only excellent role models but go all out, all the time for the jersey they wear as opposed to all the attention they can get (unlike the NBA or NFL or whatever).
Check it out folks and see why the Cup is the most difficult championship to win and why the atheletes are the nicest and most deserving of all athletes to be followed.

Don Cherry, eh? | 2/21/2007, 10:42 pm EST

I’m not sure what season this is, but Fred Brathwaite last played for Calgary in 2001, so this clip is ancient history what with the new bargaining agreement and rules. I don’t see why anyone should care about hockey: it’s run by a old boys’ club of Canadian old-timers who make sure the blood sport is still in the game.

To play hockey you need expensive equipment for growing children, a frozen ice surface that needs to be maintained constantly, and you need to know how to skate as well as play. To play soccer all you need is a ball and a place to kick it around. Do the math.

Hockey consumes a lot of precious energy. I predict hockey won’t last more than the next thirty years unless some limitless source of renewable energy is found. It costs a lot to build, heat and maintain the ice in hockey rinks. That’s energy that could be used elsewhere, and selfish Canadians (like me) can live without their precious hockey and bloody Neanderthal knuckles.

Hmm | 2/21/2007, 10:57 pm EST

If you’re a sports fan and you haven’t heard of Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin, you will soon. Hockey has speed, skill, exitement, hitting and fighting and is the fastest game in the world. Why most yanks would rather watch cars driving in circles is beyond me.

surley | 2/21/2007, 11:51 pm EST

to: exposureofmorons michigan not michighan which moron are you trying to expose

pete | 2/21/2007, 11:54 pm EST

hockey’s goin through it’s phases just like baseball and football did after their strikes, so obviously it wouldn’t have good ratings right now. give it 5 years and it will be major again…if nothing else, hell of a lot more exciting than basketball to watch/play

me | 2/22/2007, 12:13 am EST

Ignorant americans.

Kash | 2/22/2007, 12:27 am EST

Greatest sport on earth, fellas. By the way: This is an old clip.

bigdave | 2/22/2007, 12:45 am EST

hey pete, hockey ratings were down five years before the strike. Oh wait, it never had ratings. Hockey is only popular in Canada and nothern parts of U.S. It tends to be trendy in a city that contends for a championship, also.

bigdave | 2/22/2007, 12:49 am EST

I would have to say that it is the NHLs marketing that makes us ignorant towards that hockey league.

Lato666 | 2/22/2007, 1:58 am EST

Hockey is the greatest sport on earth. And it’s players are the salt of the earth. You know they’re great human beings when Sports Illustrated writers want to send clips of hockey players conduct to nfl and nba players to show them how RESPECT and HONOUR are displayed. Steve Begin lost 6 teeth when he got his face smashed into the boards and was back on the ice in 10 minutes. Basketball players have a hard time playing their hardest because they’re not the centre of attention. Who has more heart here?

BK | 2/22/2007, 3:40 am EST

As others have said this clip is old. Besides, the sickest highlight in ages was that goal Ovechkin scored from his back after getting tripped up last season. You can see it on any one of the Ovechking highlight reels on youtube along with a million other devastatingly brilliant plays by that kid. I would sell my soul for him to play for my Islanders.

Harry | 2/22/2007, 8:10 am EST

Hockey is an awesome sport. If you’ve never been to a live hockey game you are missing out and don’t know what you are talking about by dissing it. I would take a hockey game over baseball or the NBA anyday. Also, if you want to see a sick goal, check out Ovechkin’s highlight from last season.

lik roper is a perv | 2/22/2007, 8:27 am EST

Atlanta thrashers rule! Hockey lives in the ATL.

J | 2/22/2007, 9:18 am EST

Go Wings!

Refurb Beatle | 2/22/2007, 9:58 am EST

Did rolling stone just discover Hockey? lol…clip of the day??? Clip of some day in 2001 ???

Best sport on earth. It would be the most popular game on earth, only if every country had a typical Canadian winter to support it.

I think the NHL as added too many teams in the south. Phoenix??? Florida ??

The same for the NBA, why did they expand in Canada. Toronto??? freaking Vancouver???

Anyway, couldn’t care less how many people know or like the sport in US or Canada. As long as I can still watch a good game on the tube or play it every week.

Boner | 2/22/2007, 10:12 am EST

NHL>NFL
