The twelve guys remaining in the Season Six run of American Idol gave their debut performances last night. It was a parade of mediocrity from first to last, making the difficult business of predicting who’s getting cut this week even more difficult. Usually, a couple people fall flat on their faces; last night, it was all about barely scraping through. That said, our prediction for this week’s ousted dudes is based on whether anybody in the viewing public is gonna dial his or her fingers raw voting for these schlubs. For instance, Sundance Head was awful, but he’s a lovable butterball who you expect to sound like Meat Loaf even when he sounds more like some other kind of loaf. Nick Pedro felt totally out of place and unglamorous amongst the other over-groomed fellas, but he comes off like a down-on-his-luck guy (witness the tears he shed during his pre-performance interview about how life has been kind of rough sometimes) who deserves a second chance. Meanwhile, here are the two we say will inspire the fewest calls:
- Rudy Cardenas, who performed “Free Ride,” mumbled his way through the verses and only seemed to know the song when he got to the chorus. His goofy rump-shaking also left much to be desired. Unsurprisingly, Paula thought he was “fantastic.” Randy, however, delivered the truest words Cardenas would hear: “For me, dawg, it was really corny.” Song was too dated, performance too dorky, singer too forgettable. Later, dude.
- A.J. Tabaldo did a passable version of Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much” that got Paula dancing…but then again, what wouldn’t? I knew we were in trouble as soon as I heard the slap-bass intro. Tabaldo picked a song that will fizzle with the key Idol demographics — little kids and old ladies — and, as Simon wisely noted, “It was kind of a theme park performance.” This kid’s tried out for Idol for the past five seasons and this is the farthest he’s made it so far. See you next year, A.J.
