What Was Nirvana’s Greatest Moment Ever?

2/20/07, 1:15 pm EST

Nirvana, Reading, Kurt CobainToday would have been Kurt Cobain’s 40th birthday. In memory of Generation X’s foremost poet, British music weekly the NME conducted a poll asking readers to name Nirvana’s greatest moment. The band’s 1992 performance at the Reading festival was selected as the band’s awesomest experience.

While footage of the concert, like this clip, in which the band tears through “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” remind those of us who weren’t there that we’re jealous of those who were, we’re still not convinced Reading was Nirvana’s greatest moment on earth.

We’d nominate the band’s 1993 performance on MTV Unplugged as an obvious alternative, and we’d consider less obviously significant but character defining moves like making out during the post-show bonding session on SNL in 1992, or Kurt’s half-playing of “Rape Me” at the ‘92 VMAs after agreeing to perform the less provocative “Lithium” instead.

What’s your pick for greatest Nirvana moment of all time?

Does being the most overrated band of the 90s count as great moment?

Den | 2/20/2007, 1:37 pm EST

Every live show they did. The DVD documenting the Nevermind tour is amazing. They’re probably the best rock band I saw live. And they had the best music, the best songs.

Knocking Michael Jackson off of No. 1.

MV | 2/20/2007, 1:47 pm EST

The Foo Fighters. Right.
Grohl needs to get back behind the kit already.

Richard | 2/20/2007, 1:47 pm EST

1. MTV Unplugged (1993) – Showed the songs for what they were. Amazing. Showed the band in its truest sense. Just months later, he would be gone. An amazing performance and probably our most defining memory of him.

2. Reading Festival (1992) – A showcase for the band in all its raw power and ferocity. It was pop, it was punk, it was alternative, it was all of those things and more. Less than a year after the release of ‘Nevermind’, this is a definitive performance.

3. MTV Awards (1992) – A true punk until the end, Cobain teasing “Rape Me” is classic. This came in the middle of the show, instead of the proposed opening slot with “Teen Spirit”. The performance was memorable, but more for what was going on around it, than the performance itself.

Courtney | 2/20/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Kurt Cobain was and still is one of the most talented and influencial artists of all time. Anyone who doesn’t repsect that has no appreciation for music! RIP kurt!!!

Judy | 2/20/2007, 1:53 pm EST

the time BEFORE Nevermind exploded. Things were the way they were meant to be…Kurt without Courtney, the mainstream had their hair bands, and the underground was the underground.
Damn Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, & Poison fans couldn’t leave well enough alone & had to jump someone else’s train. Ass-holes!
Yes, nirvana was the era before Nirvana.

Cory | 2/20/2007, 1:53 pm EST

I still get chills whenever I have the chance to see the Unplugged performance. I remember in college, they replayed the performance on TV, and I called off plans with my then girlfriend so I could sit and watch the performance in peace.

Happy Birthday, Kurt.

Sonic Reducer | 2/20/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Overrated. That’s funny.

abandonedstation | 2/20/2007, 1:57 pm EST

Miming ‘Teen Spirit’ on Top of Pops (where Kurt sings in a false baritone).
Playing ‘Territorial Pissing’ instead of Lithium (which the host introduced) on a British talk show.
The song ‘Dive’.
The SNL kiss.
Krist singing YCMA’s ‘macho man’ on a live bootleg of Love Buzz.
Kurt changing the words in ‘School’ to ‘drinking cow sperm again’ after Dave Grohl told a story about cow sperm medicine during a show in Japan (’Pissing Factory’ bootleg).

Certainly the most subversive popular band of all time.

Wayne | 2/20/2007, 2:07 pm EST

Definitely MTV Unplugged.

jill hives | 2/20/2007, 2:11 pm EST

when the bassist was just about knocked out by his own guitar on live tv.
now that’s classic shit.

N.O.Y.B. | 2/20/2007, 2:15 pm EST

“Playing ‘Territorial Pissing’ instead of Lithium (which the host introduced) on a British talk show.”

The performance of that song sent shivers up my spine. Truly amazing.

Adam | 2/20/2007, 2:18 pm EST

When Krist threw his bass in the air and it fell down on him and gave him a concussion on MTV.

DeadHorse | 2/20/2007, 2:26 pm EST

Of side note, is anyone else feeling old at the thought of Kurt Cobain being 40 (presuming he was still alive)?

onechan | 2/20/2007, 2:32 pm EST

Definitely MTV unplugged. I remember them replaying it over and over when he died. I’d watch it and try and look into his face and wonder if we should have seen it coming, or something. I think I was in 8th grade. I’d never been moved by something like that before. I still listen to the unplugged album.

john | 2/20/2007, 2:44 pm EST

Kurts best moment was a tie between the 92 VMA’s and Unplugged…Unplugged showed a whole new dimension to Nirvana…and the VMA incident with Axl Rose was when Nirvana “arrived.” When you are able to get the attention of the biggest rock star in the world at the time and make him want to kick your ass…it means you have made it….plus Axl telling Kurt to shut his bitch up and kurt responding by turning to Courtney and saying “shut up bitch” was classic…..

lik roper | 2/20/2007, 2:59 pm EST

the first time kurt did heroin – after that; it was all downhill…

sg | 2/20/2007, 3:12 pm EST

Dave’s right, way overrated. Not horrible, but way overrated.

EVH is more right, except the Foos are also overrated and Courtney pulled the trigger.

P.COS | 2/20/2007, 3:15 pm EST

I hate to say this, but the Foos really are terrible.

Scenic Anemia | 2/20/2007, 3:16 pm EST

Playing “Territorial Pissings” on the Jonathan Ross Show when he was expecting “Lithium” was great. Apparently they did that solely because Jonathan Ross was a dick backstage. I’m all for that kind of behavior.

MTV Unplugged is an obvious choice.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Kurt and Krist’s appearance on Headbanger’s Ball. Kurt wore a huge yellow prom dress because “it’s a ball” and he wanted to “dress accordingly.” Hilarious. As depressed and mopey as he could seem, Kurt had a killer sense of humor as well. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” didn’t kill hair metal, that dress being worn on Headbanger’s Ball killed hair metal.

Mr Roper | 2/20/2007, 3:16 pm EST

Nirvana was its most exciting and volatile in the period between Bleach and Nevermind. Exciting because it was the fans of the music and not the bandwagon wannabes who eventually killed Cobain. I often imagine Kurt looking out into the audience, watching it transform from “alt-scene” to the Abercrombie/Pearl Jam set. It would make me rethink my creative purpose and legacy, for certain.
Nirvana as well as underground music would have been better off without the “Grunge” fad.

J. | 2/20/2007, 3:19 pm EST

So many great moments but I would go with the VMAs. That version of Lithium is great. The re-release of Live Tonight Sold Out is so rad and is one of the coolest (not necessarily best) rock documentaries.

Worst moment…changing the art work on In Utero for Wal-Mart. Everyone should have known something was VERY wrong with Kurt when he agreed to that.

Gordon | 2/20/2007, 3:19 pm EST

Oasis is far better than Nirvana. Why even fight it?

saylor828 | 2/20/2007, 3:29 pm EST

Most of Nirvana’s finest moments have been mentioned (or bashed by people who for some reason think Nirvana is overrated, and are probably listening to lame Pearl Jam records as they go on their diatribes) but I would say a great moment for Nirvana was the New Year’s 93 MTV concert special (called Live and Loud). Originally Nirvana and Pearl Jam were to both play that show and MTV was going to air songs from both band’s sets. Last minute, Pearl Jam backed out of the bill, and the concert was going to be called off. Instead, Kurt said that they would just play an extended set and do the entire show. Although only 10 tracks were aired, they sounded great, and they took the initiative to keep the concert alive and the attendees satisfied. That was recorded about 4 months before Kurt’s death, when resources say Kurt was abusing heroin at his worst. He still managed to put on a phenomenal show along with Dave and Krist. I don’t know why Pearl Jam cancelled, and am not giving them any grief because who knows what their circumstances were, but Nirvana could have backed out and that show would have never happened.

anonymous | 2/20/2007, 3:30 pm EST

RIP Kurt, we miss you.

jay | 2/20/2007, 3:35 pm EST

I don’t think one moment can truly be called Nirvana’s best performance. Honestly, I don’t think the band would even give a shit. They loved playing. It’s what got them off. A moment of total ecstacy, a moment when Kurt’s stomach pains would go away, and a moment when the audience would be inundated with Nirvana.

Grand | 2/20/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Making all that idiotic hair-metal obsolete is the greatest thing that Kurt ever did.

mtv unplugged was amazing. anything live, nirvana is just plain good

To SAYLOR828 | 2/20/2007, 6:16 pm EST

You don’t look cool insulting Pearl Jam by calling their records “lame”, it doesn’t make you look like a Nirvana fan, it makes you look like you’re trying too hard to be cool & it makes you look hypocritical – which you are. Pearl Jam’s albums aren’t lame by any standards kid. You think you’re looking “indie” by saying so (for some reason?) but even the iconic Sonic Youth who Nirvana idolized were happily opening for Pearl Jam on tour in 2006 in support of their “lame” album.

Secondly, Pearl Jam backed out of the MTV show because Eddie Vedder became so ill he could barely get out of bed. So to make it look like Nirvana “saved the day” is silly, people get sick… It happens, that’s real life – Quit acting as if Nirvana were forced to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders… All they did was play a longer set.

Again, you’re not cool kid, quit trying so pathetically hard.

“I often imagine Kurt looking out into the audience, watching it transform from “alt-scene” to the Abercrombie/Pearl Jam set.”

Denying an obliterated Eddie Van Halen from joining them onstage and ultimately having to have him kicked out of the show due to his drunken persistence. Happy B-day, Kurt.

Anonymous | 2/20/2007, 6:50 pm EST

Leave Bon Jovi alone they respected Kurt and the band. You don’t relize that they included Kurt in one of their songs as well as writing one about how much paine he went through.

Bunny | 2/20/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Wow, I don’t know where to begin!! The MTV awards with the bass & Dave yelling “Hi Axl!” over and over was pretty great….Unplugged is a given. I think some of my favorite moments were their fashion choices, the cardigans Kurt wore, Krist’s pink jeans, Dave with the long johns under his shorts. I really miss Nirvana, happy birthday Kurt!!

charliemapleton | 2/20/2007, 7:31 pm EST

One that sticks out was when Kurt-or I believe Dave-either one of them was giving each other a piggyback when they were on their way to accepting their award at the ‘94 VMAs.It’s funny to see what antics that spontaneous bands like them can pull of at lavish events like at Radio City Music Hall. But what can I say?It was the VMAs,where crass, crudeness, and controversy are more welcomed than anywhere else.Nirvana particularly,NOTORIOUSLY epitomized that on that night.God bless Nirvana, and best wishes to Kurt C.

BonJovi has no place in the same sentence as Nirvana. No offense BonJovi fans, I’m just sayin’…

you do realize kurt was dead when the 94 vma’s took place dont you??

Mike27 | 2/20/2007, 10:57 pm EST

**Making all that idiotic hair-metal obsolete is the greatest thing that Kurt ever did.**

Then how come hair metal was still in strong rotation on MTV in ‘93 – 2 years after smells like teen spirit came out???

lik roper | 2/20/2007, 11:39 pm EST

it’s true; there were too many hair bands and power ballads and rock n roll anthems – it was really all about GNR GNR GNR…

but! when you start having concerts where everone is getting violent and pulling out the seats and throwing them into the air and injuring people and causing what would usually be considered a riot or an emergency situation not even seen in most natural disasters, the government is behind the scenes taking notes and taking action to make sure things change (oh, and the PMRC didn’t help either)…

anyway; a peaceful, non-violent scene was the logical alternative to all that madness…

Rod | 2/20/2007, 11:45 pm EST

“Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

They were a one-hot-wonder band.

Every moment the band ever produced

Joe | 2/21/2007, 12:54 am EST

– The “Headbangers Ball” appearance where they showed up wearing dresses and said something like, “We figured we should get dressed up for the Ball.” Still one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

– The 1992 VMA performance. It began with the band tricking MTV into thinking they were playing “Rape Me” and ended with Krist Novoselic giving himself a concussion.

– The Unplugged performance.

Hard to believe Kurt would have been 40 today. Happy birthday to one of my all-time favorite songwriters.

Trent | 2/21/2007, 1:13 am EST

The “Lithium” performance on MTV Music Awards still sends a chill up my spine everytime.

Bedster | 2/21/2007, 6:41 am EST

For all you Americans who haven’t seen Nirvana’s performance on Top of the pops (The Tame British institution music charts show) chec it out on you tube. Kurt sings smells like teen spirit in the style of a choirboy and Dave has his drumkit so high he can barely reach it- hilarious stuff.

The lithium performance at the MTV awards isn’t in the NME list but is hands down my favourite performance.

Skullfreak | 2/21/2007, 8:37 am EST

The Best Nirvana moment was when Kurt, spineless guppy that he is, proceeded to blow his goddamn head off. Imagine the blood, brains, and skull fragments in that room…

RockGod | 2/21/2007, 10:24 am EST

The greatest moment is when he realized his group BOWS DOWN to Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and most importantly, Guns N Roses, and when he refused to tour with GnR, thats the greatest moment, because people got to see Soundgarden on tour with GnR then a bunch of overated heroin addicts.
