Weekend Rock List: Best Replacements Song Ever

2/16/07, 6:11 pm EST

replacements

When we proposed the weekend focus on the best Replacements song ever, one of our illustrious editors pointed out that they’re all good, so what’s the point. The point is that these five are the best. Let’s argue.

  • “I.O.U.”
  • “Bastards of Young”
  • “Unsatisfied”
  • “Color Me Impressed”
  • “I’m In Trouble”

PinkPick | 2/16/2007, 7:19 pm EST

You need to add “Can’t Hardly Wait” and kick out both of the bottom two picks. It’s their best pure pop momment. Maybe add “Left of the Dial” too.

DoubleF | 2/16/2007, 7:33 pm EST

“Left of the Dial” is overrated.

“Within Your Reach” is underrated.

Vince | 2/16/2007, 7:54 pm EST

“I’ll Be You” should be in there, as well as “Within Your Reach” and “Here Comes A Regular”.

bhoouse | 2/16/2007, 7:55 pm EST

“I.O.U” – nice.

Other faves include “I Will Dare”, “Alex Chilton: and “The Ledge”, although I’ve always put “Go” at the top of my Mats list.

Rob | 2/16/2007, 8:33 pm EST

“I Will Dare,” “Within Your Reach,” “Here Comes A Regular,” “Bastards of Young,” “Unsatisfied.” “Can’t Hardly Wait” narrowly misses my list because of the production.

jcjohnson63 | 2/16/2007, 8:38 pm EST

androgynous and i’ll be you.

Gaz | 2/16/2007, 8:46 pm EST

Mats Rule | 2/16/2007, 9:18 pm EST

The Ledge,Answering Machine,Skyway,Unsatisfied, Andro and Regular…”turn your back on a pay ya back last call” thats the stuff of genius.

Nate | 2/16/2007, 10:13 pm EST

First of all I want to say that “All Shook Down” WAS a good album. Though it may not be a Mats record in the strictest sense.

1. Skyway
2. Answering Machine
3. I Will Dare
4. Bastards of Young
5. The Last

Happyboy | 2/16/2007, 10:29 pm EST

If Only You Were Lonely…..Bastards of Young….Waitress in the Sky….Swinging Party….Dope Smokin Moron

Beer for Breakfast?

Jeremy | 2/16/2007, 11:43 pm EST

I like Answering Machine.

And Tommy Stinson’s solo album, Village Gorilla Head.

JLI | 2/17/2007, 12:34 am EST

One of those great bands that most people never heard. My favorites are:
1. Here Comes A Regular
2. Skyway
3. I.O.U.
4. Waitress In The Sky
5. Unsatisfied

Janet | 2/17/2007, 1:35 am EST

Little Mascara

Bud Man | 2/17/2007, 1:58 am EST

Did they ever really put out a bad song? Don’t think so….

Dave | 2/17/2007, 8:26 am EST

In no particular order, except for Number 1.

1. Alex Chilton (I’m in love with this song)
2. Here Comes a Regular
3. Gary’s Got A Boner (perhaps their best pure, unaffected rock song)
4. I Don’t Know (this separates itself by their best couplet “One foot in the door, the other foot in the gutter”
5. Bastards of Young

Best Album: Let it Be

Jeremy | 2/17/2007, 8:56 am EST

Can’t believe no one mentioned “Valentine”

Lobsters | 2/17/2007, 9:05 am EST

I don’t kid around about The Replacements – The Best Band Ever. I like your five but I would also suggest “Don’t Ask Why”, “Careless”, “Kids Don’t Follow”, “Within Your Reach”, “If Only You Were Lonely”, “Valentine”, “Can’t Hardly Wait” . . . I could go on all weekend.
Touring with The Replacements was the best thing to ever happen to those R.E.M. dullards.

Jake Burns | 2/17/2007, 9:30 am EST

Lay it down clown and Tommy gets his tonsils out. Best album is Let it Be

amanda. | 2/17/2007, 9:59 am EST

here comes a regular.

Jürgen Kohler | 2/17/2007, 10:30 am EST

Küss mich im Bus

Brent | 2/17/2007, 11:22 am EST

Horrible. What are you on? Nothing from “Let It Be,” their only must-have album? The only one you got right was “Color Me Impressed.” Other four should be:
1. Androgynous
3. I Will Dare
4. Unsatisfied
5. Dope Smokin Moron

Brent | 2/17/2007, 11:22 am EST

Oops you did have Unsatisfied. I havent had my coffee yet.
Change that to “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out.”

Westerberg for Pres. | 2/17/2007, 11:56 am EST

“Nobody” awesome ge-tar solo at the end!

“Someone take the wheel”…cause i dont know where i’m goin’

Jon | 2/17/2007, 12:18 pm EST

My fave is “I’ll Buy”. Who’s with me?

Lobsters | 2/18/2007, 9:06 am EST

I know that the Velvet Underground are The 108th Best Band Ever, but how much of a creep would you have to be to “love” them? Kraftwerk is a basket of kittens compared to The Velvet Underground.

fubuger | 2/18/2007, 11:52 am EST

I got the herps

DaveC | 2/18/2007, 12:29 pm EST

The Velvet Underground absolutely are great and sold nothing. How about John Hiatt? He should be bigger than Norah Jones.

John | 2/19/2007, 4:14 am EST

My Top 5,for now,and in no
particular order-
“Skyway”
“Hold My Life”
“Alex Chilton”
“Unsatisfied”
“Wait ress In The Sky”
“Tim” is my fave Replacements album
and while I’m here,to that turd who
took me to task for doin’ an
acapella,yet slightly inebriated,
version of “Androgynous” at Lambton
Park in June last year,and
disrespected the Replacements as
much as he did me,a line from
“I.O.U.” describes you best-
“You’re all fucked”!

Jeremy | 2/19/2007, 5:01 am EST

I love the Velvets but the ‘Mats are more consistently great when you take a long look at their song catalog. I’ll be crucified for this but you find some filler with the Velvets (”Lonesome Cowboy Bill” anyone?). None at all with the ‘Mats. It’s a crime they are so often overlooked and the solo stuff is virtually ignored. At least WE all love and miss them.
