UPDATE: Additions to Live Earth Lineup

2/16/07, 11:01 am EST

al gore

As we reported yesterday, Al Gore will be teaming up with Live 8 creator Kevin Wall to produce Live Earth, a musical concert behemoth taking place July 7th and featuring an all-star lineup of grade-A headliners. ROLLING STONE has learned exclusively that we can add two more music heavyweights to the bill: Genesis and Kanye West. The concert, which will touch down in every continent on the planet, will raise funds and awareness for environmental causes, specifically global warming, an issue close to Gore’s heart. While big names like Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and U2 have not yet signed on for the concert, organizers say they’re still in negotiations with a score of musicians and expect the final lineup to include more than 100 top acts.

Well this sounds AWESOME…the tv broadcast of ‘LIVE 8′ was horrible so hopefully this will be an improvement. So many great acts on tour this year….I need to win the LOTTERY!

Stuporfly | 2/16/2007, 11:37 am EST

Add Kanye, the Police and Genesis to this list of already confirmed artists announced yesterday…

Pharrell
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Snoop Dogg
Lenny Kravitz
Bon Jovi
Paolo Nutini
Sheryl Crow
AFI
Melissa Etheridge
John Mayer
Damien Rice
Corinne Bailey Rae
Duran Duran
Snow Patrol
John Legend
Black Eyed Peas
Akon
Enrique Iglesias
Fall Out Boy
Mana
Keane
Kelly Clarkson
Korn
Faith Hill w/ Tim McGraw
Bloc Party

It’s not the hippest lineup around, but you certainly can’t say it doesn’t have broad appeal.

MMW | 2/16/2007, 11:39 am EST

who cares? take out police and RHCP, and it is a ton of musically challenged DB’s. Why cant al gore just go away? something tells me he will lose at this as well.

martino | 2/16/2007, 11:42 am EST

can Motley Crue play in Barrie again?

Stuporfly | 2/16/2007, 11:49 am EST

Yes, if only Al Gore had thought of MMW’s feelings on the matter. I’m sure he’ll check with you next time, tiger.

Dan | 2/16/2007, 11:55 am EST

I hope I can go!

Littlerockmom | 2/16/2007, 12:00 pm EST

Many of the Live Earth artists are the groups Tipper Gore warned us against.

dpr | 2/16/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Dang, this concert sounds cool. If only it was for a good cause, like poverty, hunger, ending genocide, or stopping abortion.

It´s my birthday (07.07.07) | 2/16/2007, 12:05 pm EST

And I wish for Deep Purple one off Concert with all of their great singers (Rod Evans, Gillan, Coverdale and Glenn Hughes) and maybe the one boring singer (Turner) can play Tambourine. Just a Birthday wish and it would be for a good cause. :)

MMW | 2/16/2007, 12:15 pm EST

because stuporfly, that is what i crave- al gore thinking of my feelings. take your face out of his butt.

Nicholas | 2/16/2007, 12:17 pm EST

I wonder if these groups are PMRC approved.

Jacob | 2/16/2007, 12:21 pm EST

WHoa! NME just confirmed that the blue man group will be headlining this show!

No, not really.

Aries73 | 2/16/2007, 12:29 pm EST

Sounds like a nice lineup all around. It might not appeal to the “hip” crowd–Tower of Power never really gave us the answer to “What is Hip”–but it is definitely attractive to those who like a mix of good music overall (i.e. different genres from different eras).

If I don’t get to see it live, it will be on my DVR schedule.

rsfan | 2/16/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Does anyone know what cities are planned in the US?
Great acts so far BTW.

Kevin | 2/16/2007, 1:00 pm EST

…this just in–Britney will be giving up “coochie shots” on stage left…

baba o riley | 2/16/2007, 1:07 pm EST

“I wonder if these groups are PMRC approved”

Lol, I thought that same thing when I first heard about this thing.

Somewhere In the Middle | 2/16/2007, 1:10 pm EST

I wonder what Tipper’s thoughts are about Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing there. I can’t wait to see her on TV trying to look hip swaying back and forth to bands and groups that she previously railed against. It will also be amusing to watch Al Gore try not to look like a douchebag. It might be more entertaining than the show itself.

Only if Saint Bono would participate it could be a marathon spectacular. Why don’t you just eat a peach and toss the pit! Enrique is the true pull to this event.

flyboy | 2/16/2007, 1:36 pm EST

everytime i think of al gore, i think of the simpsons bit where somebody pulls the string out of the al gore doll, and you hear the flat droll sound of ” yooou arrre hearring thhe ssounnnd ovvv mmy vvoiicce..”

but that was then. anybody sticking their neck out like this guy is obviously gonna have his critics. but i’m not one of them. hell, it’s gonna be an amazing, if diverse, line-up.

is bono too old to make another leap into a crowd? will anthony kleidis song on key? will kelly clarkson go on without backing tracks? will grohl sing or scream? oh, yeah, the save the earth thing is cool too.

that said, where i come from, if you could warm up my winter a degree or two, i’m ok with that. just move those people on the coast lines up a few hundred feet, it’ll be ok.

those of you without a sense of humour, go back to your solitaire.

cheers.

I hope I can get the day off from the factory where I work. Usually they make me work on Saturdays, but I hate it! You know what the problem is? My boss is a dick. That dude wouldn’t know Van Halen or (like our Russian friend suggests) Deep fucking Purple if they bit him in the balls. I’m gonna rock on 7/7/07! I don’t give a fuch anymore.

Swingline Stapler | 2/16/2007, 2:32 pm EST

This won’t be a complete event until Dee Snyder is up there singing a duet with Tipper.
Since they’re old buddies, maybe they’re saving the Twisted Sister announcement for the very, very last.

Loyalist of the Savage Nation | 2/16/2007, 2:46 pm EST

I find it funny that Al Gore is now using the Hollywood & Music Industries to further his theory of Global Warming when his wife, Tipper Gore, dedicated her adult and professional life to bringing down said name industries, especially controversial acts such as Marilyn Manson, Eminem, 2Live Crew, and others, causing the creation of the now infamous “Parental Advisory” sticker. I am sensing double standards here, and definitely a scam of some sort. How much money will he be profiting from the advertising and sponsoring corporations who help fund this? Will he be taking money only from those who do not help hurt the environment? Since this not about raising money but “awareness,” but there is surely a way to make money out of this. Something is wrong here. Al Gore needs to be medically evaluated for any mental disabilities. He really has lost it.

I’m just wondering whether or not “Genesis” includes Phil Collins. If so, I think that’s the act I’d be looking forward to the most.

RS | 2/16/2007, 4:38 pm EST

Do any of you actually read Rolling Stone and it’s environmental articles? The guy ranting about Al Gore and the “theory” of global warming needs to move out of mom’s basement before commenting on such things. This isn’t political. This is about the changing atmosphere of the world something that isn’t denied by anyone. Whether you believe the billions of tons of Carbon added to the atmosphere each year is part of it or not, the world’s atmosphere is drstically changing right now. This WILL affect you. Now I don’t know where money from this will go, but if it enlightens some of the people making comments on here as to what’s happening in the world around them, that’ll be enough for me.

You're right | 2/16/2007, 4:42 pm EST

RS – I read, your comments are right on, but I’m a fan of music so let’s keep it light and talk about the show. This is a good solid line up. I’m psyched to see this thing happen. Should be cool.

this has gotto be some scam. hes trying to raise awareness yet hes still getting money in his pocket and hes using music to get it. this even more wierd since his bitch of a wife tried to get rid of good music.

cody | 2/17/2007, 12:45 pm EST

I think Al Gore may be the anti-christ & he is using music to rise to power.

ROB R. | 2/17/2007, 1:06 pm EST

Doesn’t anyone in music remember that this “load” and his equally annoying wife wanted to censor music? If I was in a band I would tell that “stiff blowhard” to sing himself if he wanted to have a concert for his political agenda!

Punch114 | 2/17/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Al Gore is the poster child for pushing for initiatives to address climate change. However, he once held the 2nd most powerful position in the country and did little to address this issue.

Detroit Rock City | 2/17/2007, 3:45 pm EST

BLA BLA BLA….
Who Cares. There is no such thing as global warming, its just the apocalypse on its way.HA HA
Benifit concerts are a waste of time.Kanye whatever his name is not gonna convince me that global warming is happening.Al Gore and his dumb wife back in the 80″s wanted to censor music, now he using music to sell his bullshit!

Al Gore=boring | 2/17/2007, 5:38 pm EST

If this is ANYTHING like his awful movie…count me out.

I actually fell asleep to a doomsday scenario, how dull do you have to be to let someone fall asleep during your lecture, I mean movie about the “end of humanity”.

I don´t want this boring blowhard having ANYTHING to do with my music…especially considering his wife´s history.

This dude hit the point perfectly:
Punch114 | 2/17/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Al Gore is the poster child for pushing for initiatives to address climate change. However, he once held the 2nd most powerful position in the country and did little to address this issue.

All he REALLY cares about is keeping his name in the news since he lost to Bush. We may be in a mess now with Bush as President, but imagine how bad off we´d be if Gore was elected…how would he have handled 9-11?

All this concert is going to turn into (especially since Kayne is involved) is some giant Bush bashing show…blaming him for the whole thing even Gore is just as much to blame.

Mr Grim | 2/17/2007, 8:46 pm EST

Geeze, some of you people are so stupid, I mean al gore throughout his career has been involved in numerous policys, and the environment work goes back to the early 80’s, so it’s not just like he jumped the bandwagon know, and even after all his advancements as vice president in seting up free trade deals, getting rid of Slobodan Milošević, and shutting down iraq with op desert storm, rather than getting into a pointless, prolonged damaging war with them, and yet the majority of morons in here hiding behind Anonymity only car about some music ban he enforced, who the fuck cares, we all use limewire etc why would that matter, I think like the fucking sky ripping apart may just be a little bit more important than what song u put on your myspace???

Nate | 2/17/2007, 11:27 pm EST

A great majority of the comments to this article have left me jaw-dropped in amazement at the utter ignorance being displayed.

Global Warming is a myth? Wow.
Al Gore is doing this to scam people out of money? Wow.
Rolling Stone is bias? (sic) Wow…no shit?

Some people should really think twice before opening their mouths (or using their keyboards as the case is here) so as not to declare (anonymously, of course, with their big balls backing up their big minds) their extreme ignorance of reality to the entire world.

I read RollingStone.com purely for the sociopolitical coverage and they are still doing a great job at it. The readership (online and commenting anyway) nowadays is truly an insult to the theory of evolution. Jesus H. Christ have any of you arguing against AIT and the Live Earth concerts ever opened a textbook, read a peer-reviewed paper on climate change, or even made it past 2nd grade science class? You truly have no idea what fools you’re making of yourselves in the face of science which has been established well beyond theory for nearly a decade now.

It’s time you watch the movie so you can start removing the stupid from your minds and start making yourselves useful in society before it’s too late.

DR. NEV | 2/18/2007, 5:24 am EST

Gee, Where’s Frank Zappa when you need him? Mr’s Gore would be force fed some yellow snow! It would be nice for more ‘real musicians’ to be involved! But I guess The Police and Genesis is a start, wonder if Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Hackett will sit in for a few?

The theme song should be “when the music’s over”What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it… X2
Now, Now?, Now!
That to me would be sweet and have the NEW DOORS play.

IMightBeWrong | 2/19/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Gorearoo? LollALpalooza? I don’t know what’s wrong with this. Evidently doing things like this for the enviroment scores very lowly on many of you guys’ polls. By the way, Gore did do quite a bit for the Earth as VP. Both in the ushering of new Green initiatives and allocating more funds for the Earth itself than basically any other administration. Furthermore – for the guy who fell asleep during An Inconvenient Truth, that’s your loss man. I suppose the whole matter of rather shocking information regarding the Earth, and how we as a people have destroyed it, could be seen as quite a bore. Oh Al, when will you learn that to make a watchable movie you need lots of explosions and shiny things to really tie people in? Next time, maybe.

Roland | 2/19/2007, 7:17 pm EST

I’m trying to figure out how anyone could say Gore is the “anti-christ and using music to rise to power”. What fucking planet did you just beam down from??? Since he’s been a politician, Gore’s done nothing but try to improve the world we (and unfortunately that means you too) live in. Has he tried to get into positions of power where he could make the biggest difference? Yes. For the purpose of gaining power alone?? No. For that you can look at Cheney, Bush, and Rumsfeld et al. Gore fell off the map for about 5-6 years after he lost the election. He sought no public office. He has now found a new sense of purpose in informing the world about global warming…and suffering the slings and arrows of all you blathering sheep that couldn’t find a fact if it was lying in the road at your feet. Please…save the bullshit for some other posting, I’m not buyin’ it.

Anonymous | 2/20/2007, 12:39 am EST

Its a great idea but he shouldn’t be allowed to produce it for what his wife did to music in the eighties… the line up will be amazing but I don’t think people can become more aware of global warming, I mean if you turn on a T.V or browse the internet it’s practically impossible not to stumble upon information concerining the matter. However if they plan to educate the masses that the major contributors of global warming aren’t North American and Europe, but rather Asia, specifically China and India, and if progress is going to be made in combating global warming (or rather delaying the inevitable) more needs to be done there. But if you talk about bands like Pink Floyd reuniting for shows like this you have my attention

Grotelul | 2/20/2007, 1:52 am EST

What a bunch of crap. More political BS that the world could do without. Creating hysteria to gain power. When are people going to wake up to this? Humans the main cause of global warming? Give me a break. How did the ice melt in the early centuries? No factories, no vehicles. Technology has maybe added a slight change to the climate but this is basically all nature’s doing. What do I remember from the ’70’s? The world was going to freeze over. The masses being suckered into more nonsense. Unbelievable.

J | 2/20/2007, 12:00 pm EST

How much oil, gas,and other resources will be comsumed just to put on these shows. Will this be a Green Event or will they all be flying in their private jets wasting these precious resources and polluting the environment. How much wastefull uses of limited natural resources and how much pollution created by these shows is justifiable to tell the world we are wasting limited natural resources and polluting the planet.

well I’ll be going if and only if bon jovi plays in the US! I don’t eve care where in the US… I’m going!!! they are totally the best on the line up! as for the gore haters… have you even seen his movie? it was VERY well done, and full of research that he’s been doing for over 20 years! it’s not like he whipped it out for a final politcal move! we’re not lucky enough! if saving the environment and bringing people together for something fun is a politcal conspiracy… sign me up! it’s a helluva a lot better than creating fear to divide a country! at least his politcal moves don’t include dropping bombs on people!

Catherine | 2/27/2007, 7:57 pm EST

Music Fan | 3/13/2007, 3:36 am EST

I’ll go see Bon Jovi but as far as global warming is concerned I think it’s a farce. Al Gore put out an interesting movie but there are so many scientists who disagree I think it’s hard to say what is really true. But hey, he did invent the internet.

Well… that’s just wrong.

Even if they already have a gig scheduled in Manchester that night… so did U2 and Elton John during Live-8.

In fact, Phil Collins played BOTH the Wembley & Philadelphia shows for Live Aid, so he already did this double booking 22 years ago…

Genesis will have no problems playing Wembley in the afternoon, then getting themselves to Manchester for their 8pm show.

I just wish the Rolling Stones were a little more flexible.

George | 4/11/2007, 1:46 pm EST

I really hope that the political aspects of the ‘Climate Change’ are left behind – and that there will be more emphasis upon what may be reasonably accomplished – that would be a good outcome of such an event. The ‘facts’ are so loosly played with – that the Environmental Movement risks being discredited; let us focus upon less ’sky is falling’ and more objective solutions.

Chris | 7/5/2007, 8:50 pm EST

i for one will be boycotting this event. Gore is just as crooked as the rest of them. If you really want to help people then give starving people food.

What a bunch of crap. Al Gore should live what he preaches about his lifestyle.

Rhonea | 7/7/2007, 3:25 pm EST

If Al Gore is such a farce, why are some of you right-wing conservatives even wasting time criticizing him? He must have unnerved many of you. Even scared some of you. Good, be scared — you should be.
When one of you can show me some scientific facts from more than 5% of the science population that global warming is not human caused, then I’ll lend credence to what you say. Even if you think the whole notion of global warming is not human-caused or not happening, what’s wrong with taking shorter showers, insulating your home and driving a fuel effiecient car simply to save money? Those of you who won’t even do those things are bankrupting yourselves while your trying to antagonize Gore (he’s unruffled by you nay-sayers and carbon polluters, by the way). Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.
By the way, Al Gore is not a hypocrite. He’s had solar panels installed in his home, ususally flies commercial airlines and drives a hybrid car. Let me see some of you conservatives’ energy bills, frequent flyers miles numbers and the amount of gas you’re putting in your SUV.

Anonymous | 7/7/2007, 6:02 pm EST

Oh buy the way, Al Whore, I mean Al Gore, will profit about $89,000,000 from this so called call to climate awareness. So now do we still hate the rich. I wish I had that kind of money, so I could fly around the world telling everone what not to do, and then do exactly what I just told those poor misguided souls not to do. All Al is doing with all that flying around is poisioning this world more and more and more!!! He’s rich, Al can offset his carbon use by throwing money into some BS positive energy creator, which we all know Mr. Al owns. I wish I could dump millions into my own company and then claim a tax
right off, which, by the way, the U.S. tax payer then picks up the bill. 100% FACT!!!!!!!!!!

Erik Ljungar | 7/7/2007, 11:05 pm EST

I have many CD-s at home by artists that paricipate in the Live Earth concert with “Parental Advisory”-logos on. This logo was initiated by Al Gores wife Tipper. Isn´t this hypocrisy from Mr. Gores side?

John | 7/8/2007, 1:20 am EST

If the citizens of the planet would exercise population control, we’d see a pretty fast reduction in a lot of environmental problems.

What about that?
