In an Idol World, Defeated Grammys Settle for Reality TV’s Sloppy Seconds

2/16/07, 1:26 pm EST

Justin Timberlake

Last year, the Grammy Awards took on American Idol in a ratings battle and got humiliated, posting just 15.1 million to Idol’s 28.3. This year, the Grammy folks adopted a new approach: They conceded the ratings war by moving to Sunday night, then attempted to ape the Idol format with the aimless and mostly dull “My Grammy Moment” contest. A bunch of aspiring pop stars filming gushy home videos to prove that they’re worthy of a spot onstage with Justin Timberlake? We get it…It’s American Idol, without the fun evisceration sessions, head case contestants and possibly blotto C-list celebrity judges. Sad.

Then news broke that Robyn Troup, the My Grammy Moment contest winner, is actually an AI reject (she made it to Hollywood but was sent home during the rigorous Hollywood week axings). Really sad. It’s one thing for the Grammys to honor former American Idols like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood with actual awards, but to host an AI rip-off contest that heralds the show’s sloppy seconds should be beneath music’s Oscars…but clearly isn’t.

Is American Idol a more significant music industry presence — with higher standards and more proverbial fingers on the pulse — than the Grammy Awards? Would a Grammy darling like John Mayer even make it past Cowell?

John Mayer might not make it on American Idol…but Simon Cowell isn’t looking for talent, so much as someone he can mold into a drone.

Note that Jennifer Hudson lost American Idol–and is soon to win a couple of Oscars. Also note that the runners-up on AI do better in the industry than those who win.

talking ish | 2/16/2007, 1:54 pm EST

Also–Starsearch era Ed McMahon could totally kick Simon Cowell’s a$$.

rockstarsbaby678 | 2/16/2007, 2:06 pm EST

American Idol is a TV reality show. It’s a contest. The Grammy’s are the real deal. Not anyone can just be nominated for a grammy. Plus Grammy winners deserve it more.

mochacha | 2/16/2007, 2:15 pm EST

this is such a dumb comment… this year the grammys had one of the highest ratings ever. the fact that that singer was rejected from american idol shows how wrong the judges usually are. and i’m sure that most artists would rather win a grammy than be on the top 10 of american idol!

nick | 2/16/2007, 2:22 pm EST

Pop starz are a dime a dozen

Deliver me | 2/16/2007, 2:26 pm EST

The Grammys are a joke. I’m surprised Dixie Chix didn’t win Best Rap Album…….

defender of enron | 2/16/2007, 2:49 pm EST

i really hold more stock with idol.
i mean at least idol is truthful and
let’s face it humourous about it’s search for the perfect clone.
cowell is a hoot abdul is cuter than tina weymouth and randy is all about
the truth…dawg.
now show of hands does anyone remember what happened at the grammies…3 years ago?
we still remember kelly clarkson
no matter how mediocre she really
is.
who won best album in 2004?
who gives a shit is really the
question we should be asking.

Norm | 2/16/2007, 3:11 pm EST

American Idol has been running for what, six years now? And the show has only produced two credible talents (Clarkson and Underwood).

That’s quite a success rate.

Unfortunately, the Grammys are still more out-of-touch. At least Idol ATTEMPTS to reward talent.

Chuck | 2/16/2007, 3:14 pm EST

In my humble opinion, The Grammy’s and American Idol are both equally worthless. The only real difference is that The Grammy’s reward commercial achievment while American Idol rewards potential commercial achievment.

huh | 2/16/2007, 3:50 pm EST

why is everyone so for the grammys? the grammy are still a joke. they are even bellow the golden globes because their standards are so out of touch. how many have the beatles won? or the rolling stone? or bob dylan? i mean just the fact that jethro tul won best heavy metal grammy over metallica is reason enough to see the grammys are a joke. i say let the critics and only the critics vote for the winners.

Nicholas | 2/16/2007, 4:26 pm EST

Simon said it best on an idol episode “You are commerical with a capital C.” AI is all about marketing and packaging and not cultivating new and orignal talent.

The Grammys aren’t any better. Its pretty clear that certain artists will almost always get a grammy or at least be nominated whenever they relase a song or album (i.e. U2, Springsteen). So they are both essintially one in the same.

shir | 2/16/2007, 5:30 pm EST

Just because a talented person is cast off of Am Idol does not mean that they can’t have a career at what they love to do…namely music…
I know numerous singers/recording artist/ songwriters that live very well even though they don’t make millions of dollars. Of Course, they are looking for a big break, but who isn’t …….
It is a very broad industry. I believe Idol gives these people a big boost in their careers. Even the ones that are cast out of Hollywood week. It’s on a resume and it’s impressive…That’s good for a lot of talented people.

CellPhone | 2/16/2007, 5:49 pm EST

I don’t think John Mayer would do terribly bad on AI. I think he’d get some good comments. But, as someone pointed out earlier, AI is more about finding someone that can be molded into a huge pop star. At first sight, Mayer is not such a person, even though no one can deny that he’s a major pop star these days. Pretty odd.

Craig | 2/16/2007, 6:18 pm EST

mayer doesnt have the vocal they’re looking for. they want people who can belt loud and high.

huiohana | 2/16/2007, 7:48 pm EST

I think it’s a joke too. Especially the off the board awards (i.e. World music, Best Hawaiian) Hawaiian category has only Slack key type of music winning because these jokers do not even know what “Hawaiian” music is. They do not have knowledge of what to look for in these other types of music that they just vote off the top of their heads instead of having a panel that knows these types of genre.

peckerfauxwood | 2/16/2007, 9:47 pm EST

qdome | 2/16/2007, 10:05 pm EST

I agree that the Grammy Awards commonly miss on many of the niche market music styles, especially Folk music. I love Jackson Browne, but he is not Folk Music.

Nevertheless, I think they get it right quite often (Jethro Tull aside). Bonnie Raitt and Shawn Colvin would have been left behind by meaningless award programming like MTV and Billboard. Mary J. Blige might have, as well. I find the Grammy’s do still lean away from what sells in favor what is truly good product more than 1/2 the time and that leads people to think they are out of touch. This year they got great performances out of many great artists and even not so great (Timberlake) artists.

I agree that the reality-TV rip-off was cheesy, but the pop talent of the winner (Troup) deservered more than Rolling Stone’s biased “sloppy seconds” commentary. IF anything, they should be applauded for bringing in someone that American Idol dismissed.

Before we continue to dump on AI, do you really all think your favorite musicians made it by perservering the pain and hardship of garage band bar tours only to be “discovered” by some throwback A&R guy? The whole industry is smoke and mirrors and any one of your “idols” would have jumped at a shot at the super highway created by American Idol. Now, do we need to still be served up Barry Manilow and Burt Bacharach each week in the search of a new music star? Ahhh, no.

Dwayne | 2/16/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Oh boy. The pointless Grammy relevance debate stil continues. The most surprising thing about it, is that it’s being hosted by ROLLING STONE! U guys are such hypocrites! Not only did John Mayer’s last album ‘Continuum’, get a 4star rating from u guys, it was your #11 choice for best album of the year! Not only that, u guys just crowned him a fricking Guitar God! Why are you suddenly labelling him as a ‘Grammy darling’? Is it the ‘cool’ thing to do? It’s so funny how u guys can ridicule the very same people u put on your covers! I won’t even mention Fergie and Panic! at the Disco! Yech! Let me jus add- AI is garbage, but every now and again, Grammys get it rite. Outkast was totally deserving the year they won Album of the Year for ‘Speakerboxxx/the Love Below’ as wel as when Lauryn Hill&U2 cleaned up for ‘Miseducation…’ and ‘…Atomic Bomb’ respectively. Sometimes they overdo it (Beyoncé, Norah Jones, and recently Ray Charles’ clean up for his tepid ‘Genius Loves Company’ album), but there are deserving winners among the pile every year, like Mary J Blige for her spectacular ‘Breakthrough’ opus! But music is much bigger, and deeper than the Grammys, so it really shouldn’t be seen as the highest achievement in music, come on- how many of those gold gramaphones do Nirvana, Pink Floyd, the Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, Bjork, James Brown and Velvet Underground have?

JD | 2/16/2007, 11:51 pm EST

This grammy moment thing seems to be just an ego trip for JT. After all he had performed earlier. He just wants as much screen time at award shows as possible. And singing with JT seems to be the American Idol boobie prize.

OK | 2/17/2007, 7:07 am EST

RS you are a bunch of retarded losers –who cares ‘who’ gets past judges on American Idol – tell me when American Idol that has made a truly amazing album ever? None! The best contestants come out with mediocre pop or soft rock. Idol is crap crap, crappity crAP!

brittany booth | 2/17/2007, 11:41 am EST

hi eveyone i love the show american idol

brittany booth | 2/17/2007, 11:44 am EST

LOVE FOREVER,
BRITTANY BOOTH

Sarah | 2/17/2007, 12:12 pm EST

American Idol is a terrible show. I stopped watching after Simon rejected that transexual guy just because.

Bloc Party? | 2/17/2007, 4:39 pm EST

maybe instead of talking about BS ratings you could take an hour and review the new Bloc Party album!!

Idol is for losers…and that´s abviously what you´ve turned into for talking about it…

No Use For A Handle | 2/17/2007, 5:37 pm EST

Both “American Idol” and The Grammys are not the end-all of deciding of what is the best in music. The only difference is that The Grammys do get it right more times than AI. Love them or hate them, The Dixie Chicks did put out the best album last year. They earned their win regardless of the politics. Compare that to last year AI winner Taylor Hicks. Even though, he is different from previous winners. He isn’t that good or interesting. His only hit is a song promoted heavily on the show. It was disappointing that The Grammys stooped to “American Idol”-like contest to promote the show. Still, if I was to rely on an awards’ show or a reality show to help me decide which artist or band is better. I would go with The Grammys.

marianne | 2/17/2007, 9:50 pm EST

i just wanted to say that kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood won grammy’s becuase of thier albums not becuase of American Idol. And how do you justify that statement when Britney Spears has won the coveted Grammy? Both of the American idol winners have more talent in their little pinkies than Britney has had in her whole career. It only justifies the fact that no one cares about a grammy anymore. It’s a stupid ratings ploy and the associated ought to be ashamed of itself for honoring those like Britney!

Metal | 2/17/2007, 10:59 pm EST

i dont know why i looked on this since i hate the grammys (since that whole jethro tull over metallica thing) and american idol (it seem pointless since the winners never did anything good and their all pop and soft rock singers).

baby girl!!!! | 2/18/2007, 5:53 am EST

i dont know if anyone saw the Brit awards but it seems that Joss Stone has discovered an American accent, oh dear! check it out on you tube, my fav bit is when she call’s the interviewer “baby girl”. what a joke! anyway the grammy’s are a joke, with a stupid amount of awards! i find it cringe worthy to watch! please review bloc partys new album, it’s brill!!!!

TJ | 2/18/2007, 3:01 pm EST

I don’t think this stunt by the Grammys was a good idea (far from it, actually), but before we say that AI has its finger on the pulse of the music industry, take a look at this little fact:

On the Billboard Hot 200 right now, Chris Daughtry (5th place last season) holds the number 3 spot. Runner-up Katherine McPhee is at 11 and the insufferable Taylor Hicks is all the way down at 87.

If the music industry has a pulse right now, I don’t think anyone has it’s finger on it.

American Idol Rocks!! | 2/18/2007, 4:17 pm EST

Despite the bashing here and the elitist snobbery that many people feel about american idol as a viable means to produce actual talent in the real world- the hard cold fact is that without it, two amazing talents- carrie and kelly clarkson- would never have been discovered. Chris Daughtry is also doing very well and is hardly pop or soft rock as some of the bashers here describe idol albums. kellys last album was edgy and more pop/rock then pop. It was brilliant. Carrie Underwood does country/pop like shania twain and faith hill- but with her own spin on it. again- brilliant. Bash all you want- but real talent is coming out of the show- and certainly the music world is a better place with clarkson and carrie’s music in it to contribute. Compare them to horrid poptarts like britney spears or jessica simpson, paris hilton (eek!) lindsey lohan, ashlee simpson…etc- need I go on? If that is the talent pool record execs have to choose from without idol– then thank God for the show…as none of those talentless ditzes can hold a candle to either carrie or kelly or chris daughtry in talent or class. At least Carrie and Kelly can sing and do not need to lip sing– and they also have a brain. Carrie graduated magna cum laude from college- much more then I can say for spears or paris hilton, who with all their money, didnt even graduate high school. I applaud you American Idol- for producing real talent from average joes who actually appreciate what they have and give back to the fans, do not have egos with no talent to back it up (like spears), and who can actually sing.

Carrie/Kelly | 2/18/2007, 4:23 pm EST

I agree with some of you that normally- reality tv shows blow. But American Idol is the only reality tv show I can stomach because its brilliant in its simplicity- the best singer wins, as long as they are not uglier then dirt. Sounds pretty fair to me. And since the american public is who buys the cds out there right now- why shouldnt We the People get to decide what kind of crap, or not, is on the shelves to choose from? by voting for carrie underwood and clarkson, we voted to bring good music back to the pop/country charts. No one is saying they will be the next rolling stones of zepplin- please. But with the horrid stuff you hear on the radio these days- it’s refreshing to get to choose the kind of people we want to hear from, by voting on idol. At least carrie can belt a tune and clarkson rocks too. Chris has a lot of talent too- as did Bo last year, if only he had put out a different kind of album.

muzmeister | 2/18/2007, 6:59 pm EST

Watching the grammy’s, was it 2007 or 1987 ?, if you want to know what’s really happening in music watch the Brits

Hunter | 2/18/2007, 8:57 pm EST

The Grammys aren’t respected. Everyone knows that.

Bianca !@#$% | 2/18/2007, 9:47 pm EST

The Grammy’s are often awful and often make bad choices on who to nominate (just look at the nominees for best ‘rock’ album this year — what the hell was that?) and who to win. But they also sometimes get it right. 2005 was a great Grammy’s year, I think: Green Day, U2, The Killers, and Paul McCartney are a artists that I love and that were very popular that year, but were well-deserving of their awards, like it or not.

Bianca !@#$% | 2/18/2007, 9:48 pm EST

Oh, and I should mention that I agree with whoever said below me that people should look to the Brit Awards. Now THAT awards show knows where music’s at. The Grammy’s act like incredible British bands like Muse don’t even exist.

yahya m | 2/19/2007, 4:29 pm EST

the grammys are crap these days, there is always a single artist who takes home like f’ing 6 grammys… and on top of that its all pop stars, its a joke

Detroit Rock City | 2/19/2007, 11:43 pm EST

BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
