Last year, the Grammy Awards took on American Idol in a ratings battle and got humiliated, posting just 15.1 million to Idol’s 28.3. This year, the Grammy folks adopted a new approach: They conceded the ratings war by moving to Sunday night, then attempted to ape the Idol format with the aimless and mostly dull “My Grammy Moment” contest. A bunch of aspiring pop stars filming gushy home videos to prove that they’re worthy of a spot onstage with Justin Timberlake? We get it…It’s American Idol, without the fun evisceration sessions, head case contestants and possibly blotto C-list celebrity judges. Sad.
Then news broke that Robyn Troup, the My Grammy Moment contest winner, is actually an AI reject (she made it to Hollywood but was sent home during the rigorous Hollywood week axings). Really sad. It’s one thing for the Grammys to honor former American Idols like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood with actual awards, but to host an AI rip-off contest that heralds the show’s sloppy seconds should be beneath music’s Oscars…but clearly isn’t.
Is American Idol a more significant music industry presence — with higher standards and more proverbial fingers on the pulse — than the Grammy Awards? Would a Grammy darling like John Mayer even make it past Cowell?
