UPDATE: Chris Cornell Speaks About His Split With Audioslave

2/15/07, 7:01 pm EST

Earlier today we reported that Chris Cornell had announced he’d be leaving Audioslave — a disclosure tantamount to the end of Audioslave as a whole. Our Andy Greene spoke to Cornell immediately following the news:

Was there any one moment when you knew you wanted to leave Audioslave?

There wasn’t a key moment when I knew I wanted to quit. We finished our third record and I went back to Paris and felt like we needed some time away from each other. We did a lot of touring. We did three records. We had done a lot of stuff in a short time period of time. Everyone ran off and did their own thing. I got real busy working on music and getting into a world I was missing on the last record – which was the ability to experiment with where a song could go and spend some time on the craft of making songs. When you have four guys in a room writing songs, it different. It’s great – that’s what makes a band a band. Audioslave was great. But there’s a lot I want to do and I don’t want to juggle that with a band.
When did you tell the band?

They’ll be hearing about this today. I haven’t spoken to anyone in the band in a few months.

Where you guys not getting along towards the end?

We were getting along. Getting along as people is one thing. Getting along as a group of people that can work together in a band situation…We weren’t particularly getting along well, no. Bands work in a way where everyone at some point has to have a similar idea of how you do things. A band that makes records and tours is also a business. That’s usually where a lot of disagreements come. It’s four guys who are musicians and don’t really know much about business, but are very passionate and have very specific ideas. In this case it was a collaboration that was very satisfying and we all had a great time. When I started I was already in the midst of a solo career. It didn’t feel to me like this was ever a band I wanted to be in if there were going to be problems being in it. But we ran into this issue right away, even before the first record came out. Three albums into it, it started to seem like our interests weren’t as conjoined anymore.

Are you surprised by the Rage reunion?

A little bit. In the time I had been in Audioslave I’m pretty sure that none of them had even talked to Zack, which is a long time (laughs). It was a bit surprising, but I think it’s a cool thing. Audioslave, for my part, existed because of my memory of seeing them play shows in 1996. I thought they were one of the best live bands I’d ever seen. When I got a call from Tom and Rick Rubin about maybe making a record with them I was really curious. What they bring live is different than anything anyone has ever done. If they can actually be a band, it will be great.

Any chance of a Soundgarden reunion?

I seriously doubt it. If that were ever going to happen, someone would have to rally behind it. We ended on a great note. There is no unfinished business and no record to make and no more tours to play. I think that’s a great thing. At the end of the day it’s the fans who make you who you are. We can all be proud that a Soundgarden fan can always put on a Soundgarden record and not have to try and get some uncomfortable memory of a bad show or a new record in their mind. (laughs)

If they did call you and asked, might you you be interested?

I don’t know. It wouldn’t make sense to me, even to record a new song. I don’t see what that would accomplish. Going to a barbecue would make sense to me. We can talk about the whole history of the band and how much fun we had and see what everyone is doing now. To go in and make music together again, it can’t help but effect what came before that. We went out on such a great note. It would be really expensive to mess with that.

Chris Cornell is da man, pretty much everything he does is awesome.

Rage Reunion = good stuff

JR | 2/15/2007, 7:18 pm EST

Cornell is very well spoken. Its nice when artists aren’t all crazy when they speak to the media

Jeff | 2/15/2007, 7:32 pm EST

Um, it’s Zack, not Zach. Thanks.

lik roper | 2/15/2007, 7:44 pm EST

chris cornell has one of the most amazingly powerful voices in the business no doubt, but i’m still trying to figure out what ‘outshined’ means…

juras_m | 2/15/2007, 8:58 pm EST

chris cornell sounds really good on records…..
live shows=piece of shit… anyway, I love soundgarden

juras_m | 2/15/2007, 9:00 pm EST

chris sounds really good on records….
live shows are really really weak….
anyway, i love soundgraden

Clare O'Brien | 2/15/2007, 9:41 pm EST

I’m very sad that Audioslave had to come to an end, but they gave us three great albums and I saw them play ten times in four countries, so I can’t really complain. When things are over, they’re over. I wouldn’t want to see a Soundgarden reunion either, much as I loved them at the time.

I’m looking forward to Chris’s new album and I’m starting an unofficial fansite to follow this new phase of his career. It’ll be gradually collecting news, reviews and insights from all over the world at http://www.chriscornell.org.uk

Esther | 2/15/2007, 10:43 pm EST

I am sad to hear the news. I’ve been a Chris Cornell fan before Audioslave was ever formed. I unfortunately never had the opportunity to see them play live. It’s a little sad to think about it. But I get excited thinking about seeing Chris do a solo tour again where he can showcase his beautiful voice.
I’m signing up to your fansite Clare. I got great seats to his first solo tour. I’m counting on getting great seats again.

Tina | 2/15/2007, 10:50 pm EST

I love Audioslave and never did get to see them live. Here’s hoping Chris will come to St. Louis, MO on his solo tour! (Hint-hint!)

It sounds like Chris outgrew his need for AS. While sad, I can’t help but think bigger and better things will come his way!

Celine | 2/16/2007, 12:00 am EST

Anybody’s surprised? No should be the answer here.
Cornell needs to quit his diva-like antics and go back to his roots where he rocked out to the guitar licks of Kim Thayil and formed a whole new era in rock music. I am not talking about a Soundgarden union or anything, which would be great by the way, but just sit down and think about those songs you wrote back in the day, man! Those were some kick-ass songs. I am sure there is still more in you. You can do this. We are all here to support you. You have a beautiful voice. Just, please don’t become a whiny ass little lounge singer, OK?

Anonymous | 2/16/2007, 1:17 am EST

class act, that chris.

NYC Nate | 2/16/2007, 10:42 am EST

One of my biggest disappointments when I first heard Audioslave was the lack of Chris Cornell’s guitar in the band. I think that his instrumental abilities (he was also Soundgarden’s first drummer before Matt Cameron joined) are just as important and unique as his vocals. I really have liked most of Cornell’s solo stuff, too, so I’m looking forward to hearing some new tunes. Rock on (life goes on).

meg | 2/16/2007, 3:08 pm EST

Did anyone happen to go and see the James Bond movie and listened to the song in the beginning that he sang? well it was really good. while devasted that AS is breaking up, i think Chris can hold his own going out into a solo career

but i hope they go on a reunion tour eventually =]

meg (again) | 2/16/2007, 3:34 pm EST

i meant devastated. not devasted

ben | 2/16/2007, 6:27 pm EST

i am totaly bumbed by the break up audioslave is my inspiration its too bad.. but i guess you can never say never even if it is 10 years from now..

brutes | 2/16/2007, 8:27 pm EST

arrrrrrrrruf….RAGE IS BACK!

H.A.G IN KC | 2/16/2007, 8:57 pm EST

LETTS GET ON WITH THE RAGE REUNION FIRST.NOTHING LIKE A LIVE PERFOMANCE FROM RATM TO GET YOUR HEART PUMPING WITH RIFFS FROM MORELLO.LETS HOPE AND PRAY THAT SOUND GARDEN GET BACK TOGETHER…

Larisa | 2/17/2007, 6:36 am EST

It’s just sad, I didn’t even see them performing live…and they have all those great songs-who’s gonna play them now? Especially from the new album!

Audioslave | 2/17/2007, 9:14 am EST

Such a shame that I wouldn’t know by now your revelations
Cut me in I don’t want to live without your revelations
I don’t want to live without Audioslave!!!!!!! For me good music is dead!!!!!!!!!! (To Chris) I’ve found you guilty of a crime of leaving at a time when we needed you most!!!!!!!!!!!! Audioslave>PERFECTION!!!!

Audioslave | 2/17/2007, 9:17 am EST

COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world of music needs you!!!!!! We need you!!!!!!!!!

Wrong | 2/18/2007, 4:19 am EST

I never found Audioslave as interesting as Cornell’s solo record (Euphoria Morning), so this news seems promising to me.

Chris C. | 2/18/2007, 5:42 am EST

I’m still tryingto figure out how he swung over the crowd and dropped into our arms like Tarzan @ The Stone in S.F. when Soundgarden CoHeadlined w/ VoiVod on the LOUDLOVE tour.

audioslavejp | 2/18/2007, 6:14 am EST

Jez, I am stunned by the break up, I wasn’t sure what happened when I heard on the radio. Although I have to aggree on Chris comment’s about audioslave and soundgarden. He’s just been honest to his fans. It was great seen ya’ll at chicago at every concert.

Drew | 2/18/2007, 10:01 am EST

I saw Audioslave play a ways back with Seether, Kick Ass Show. I love Audioslave and this music is not going to turn to dust and fly away, appreciate and enjoy what you have and not mourn what none of us would ever know. Better to have a band believe that their paths intersected at the best time, but now it was time for a different direction. Better to leave with incredible music then to have fans hate albums that are pushed out for the $$$. Good Luck to all of these great musicians, we the people have not heard the last from any of these incredible artists…

Will | 2/19/2007, 12:11 am EST

Hope they ended well.
It was really nice to see Chris’ Voice & Lyrics with Tom’s songwriting. Those 2 are so great at what they do.

Hope Chris keeps going. -Very hard to go solo after a band.

spalding | 2/19/2007, 11:19 am EST

yeah

Katie | 2/19/2007, 7:34 pm EST

I liked AS because Chris was in the band. The split is promising. I’ve seen Soundgarden twice, Cornell’s solo show and AS once. The best show was the solo one. This is good news.

barrel | 2/19/2007, 8:19 pm EST

soundgarden and rage should have a reunion tour togather then Chris would sing some AS. then both bands would release their best albums. Ahhh, dreams

the eagle | 2/20/2007, 1:11 pm EST

i had the chance to see audioslave at lollapalooza 03 and it was kick azz, but a rage against the machine reunion quite makes it cool i mean it’s cool that zack finally came back into the public eye cause for those 7 years that he was away it left rage fans begging for more. As for Chris cornell’s soundgarden i think he made that decision because in other words try something else i mean look at Gavin Rossdale when he formed institute he just decided to open another chapter and put Bush back in the shelf.

69Z | 2/26/2007, 11:23 pm EST

I dont think it’s good or bad that he left Audioslave, just another chapter I guess! I was into Soundgarden, Chris Cornell and Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave tho I would have to say that Soundgarden and Rage where stronger as a musical experiance than Audioslave.
I dont blame him for not wanting a reunion with soundgarden cause it wasnt broken so why try and fix it, all he would do is risk the history of a great influential band which would be foolish at best, tho you never know, they might be able to pull it off!
I’m sure whatever he does now, it will be something which he beleives in regardless how it turns out good or bad, which in my opinion is the main thing.
I personaly have always respected his blatent disregard for the spotlight and my opinion of the dude is subject to change when that does!
Go there Chris and cheers for being honest!

What the!!!!!!!!!!! | 2/27/2007, 8:57 am EST

Chris Cornell is:

1, Musical Muse with a healthy back catologue

2, Very wealthy man

3, Extremly good looking (too much so)

4, Owner of a top Parisian restaurant

5, Extremly intelligent

Concluion:

1 , Lets all hope he has a very small penis!

Jona | 3/1/2007, 1:39 am EST

Man, I will miss Audioslave. They were one of the best rock bands arounds. To me its seems that Cornell has sold out though in comparison to Eddie Vedder (both of which r two of the best musicians). Can’t wait for the RATM reunion.

Skato | 3/5/2007, 1:02 pm EST

I just learned about AS break up yesterday when I saw the news about RATM reunion. This has broken my heart, because AS is awesome!!! However, what Chris says makes a lot a sense. Being in a band is not easy. It comes a time when you seek your personal stuff and you find yourself stuck. Can you do the same job for 10 years? Hell, no. Unless mediocrity is your middle name. Money is the last of these people concerns. Hope Tom, Brad and Tim are all right and keep rockin’ with RATM.

agnetjonas | 3/7/2007, 12:39 am EST

I can’t wait for his second solo album!

stargazer | 3/7/2007, 11:20 pm EST

Ok, Ok Everyone knew this was going to happen. No tour w/ the new album, Chris has a new solo album etc… I just want to say that Audioslave was awesome live.

Yes, I will get Chris Cornell’s new CD. I’m happy RATM is touring again. I just fear that all the good music is going away. The crap that’s on the radio now is not for me. I’m trying to hang on. I saying CHRIS SHOW US SOMETHING! I’m loyal! I’m hanging on. Trying to keep the faith. I need that voice, those lyrics, that music. There’s no one like you. I know people and things change. Just don’t change everything.

Evelyn | 3/8/2007, 9:48 pm EST

That dude has got to figure out if he wants to stay solo, or be in a band! Revelations was a bit disappointing to me, and I kept telling myself, that the next album would be better. But now, there won’t be a next album! *tear*

But, anyway, Chris has an amazing voice! The only solo song of his I’ve heard, is Can’t Change Me, but I’m sure the others are amazing, as well. I’m looking forward to see what he does next! lol

daywalker | 3/9/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Man it sucks that he left audioslave but well he has been in a lot of good bands like:soundgarden, temple of the dog, audioslave and stuff i hope its still gonna be nice when hes going solo…=S

Sas | 3/9/2007, 7:43 pm EST

It’s disappointing because I like AS, but on the other hand, I’m really excited about the Rage reunion! Chris is one of the most talented guys in rock, I’m sure he’ll do fine alone…

lynda | 3/16/2007, 4:00 pm EST

chris cornell has the best voice in rock. without a doubt

GH | 3/19/2007, 4:47 am EST

First of all Chris Cornell is in my opinion the greatest rock vocalist ever. I remember seeing Soundgarden when they where playing in drivy little bars in Seattle and Chris was living in his dumpy apartment on Capitol hill. He deserves the best life has to offer, he’s work hard for it. Good luck to you brother. You will always be an inspiration to me.
Remembering the day’s at “The Vomit”.
GH

CornellWannabe | 3/20/2007, 2:23 am EST

Soundgarden and Audioslave blew my mind. I’m a 50 yr old rock singer, and we do them and STP, Nirvana, Bush, Creed, 3 Doors Down, Nickleback, Theory Of A Dead Man, Social Distortion, Aerosmith, etc. Rage really sucks BAD!!!

dee | 3/20/2007, 10:45 am EST

of course the Philadelphia concert at the TLA sold out in 2 minutes……here’s to hoping he adds another show ……..

shiney | 3/20/2007, 5:42 pm EST

There’s no one like Chris. I’ve seen him with Soundgarden and 4x’s with Slave… There’s no one with a voice like his or that writes like him… I’ll buy his CD when it comes out just like I bought Euphoria Morning…….

Love ya Chris

just another Faithful Fan

Shiney

maria | 3/22/2007, 1:05 pm EST

i love CHRIS CORNELL!!!

darlene | 3/26/2007, 10:10 am EST

chris, see you in baltimore in april. cant wait to rock out and see that gorgeous face of yours and hear that amazing voice……ahh dreams do come true!!!

cc | 4/10/2007, 3:22 am EST

how can so much talent exist in one person? pure genius

Dan | 4/19/2007, 10:08 pm EST

Weak, Weak, Weak. Chris is really someone to admire. He couldn’t even tell the band personally he was done. He is nothing without Tom, Tim, Brad, Matt, Kim, and Ben. Next Chris will say he is doing a duet with Axel Rose.

rob | 4/24/2007, 1:43 pm EST

chris is a great songwriter and vocalist, but man, lameass on the consideration factor. telling RS before you tell the band you’re out? I heard he did this to his solo back-up band he was with after soundgarden. its self-centered and inconsiderate. Talented or not, be a decent person!

Kelly | 4/26/2007, 2:19 pm EST

Does anyone know who’s the opening act for his current tour?

Ryan | 5/5/2007, 1:46 am EST

Rage is great and all, but I can’t wait to see what Chris does next. I think it would be awesome if he joined Alice in Chains. Now THAT would kick @$$!

nomadh | 5/5/2007, 1:40 pm EST

Looking forward to the next solo album. Euphoria was his best work ever even though I was a big SG fan and really liked AS. One thing is: Its really tacky not to notify your band first before you quit. Think about that Chris. Its a little dissapointing. Stuff like that matters. To your life and your fans.

Amit | 5/17/2007, 10:11 am EST

Saw his show in London last night and he brought the house down (3 encores …. no less!!!). The new stuff also sounded great. I think the Audioslave sound was stifling his natural songwriting and personally was never too thrilled with it, though I must admit some songs were great (Like a stone, Be yourself). Hope Chris can make more such songs now that he is on his own.

Also what a great thought if he collaborated with Jerry Cantrell on a record.

Sweetlady76 | 5/19/2007, 11:57 pm EST

I admit, I only discovered him about 2 months ago, but his music has been helping through some very hard times in my life. Now, not a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least a couple of songs by him or Audioslave or Soundgarden or Temple of the Dog.
I am especially grateful that I got the chance to attend his performance at Irving Plaza on April 16 — even got to shake his hand!!!

sweetu4ria | 5/20/2007, 6:58 am EST

A long time fan of CC.. The stories I’ve interpreted from his songs over the years have mirrored my life immensely and that draws me instantly closer to his music. He’s human, down to earth and in your face honest!! I urge everyone to buy “Carry On”!! I hope it touches the depths of your soul as his music has touched mine!! And if you’re a new fan, I highly highly recommend listening to “Euphoria Morning”!!

~S

Lex Moon | 5/25/2007, 5:30 am EST

I just found out today, late as usual, lol. At first I was freaked out, just sittin at home wondering why they didnt tour for the new album which I liked better than the last [I loved all 3] and when RAGE reunited I smelled drama in heaven. But now im like oh well 3 classic albums and an upcoming greatest hits with some unreleased songs will do me just find, thats a solid colleciton right there. I wish em all the best. And I hope Zach steps up and tears the government a new ass-hole on a reunion album.

ekovacs | 5/28/2007, 2:09 pm EST

I was shocked when I first heard about the break-up. I missed the opportunity to see them perform live. What can I do now. I guess that means I need to make up what I missed out on… to attend a zillion Chris Cornell shows! LOL
I’ve seen Soundgarden twice, and Chris on his first solo tour Euphoria Mourning. I’ve seen him twice this year and I’m blown away by his performance. His voice is top notch! How does he do it! :)

I definitely will buy his new album “Carry On” before it hits stores on 6/5! I’ve got it on pre-order. YAY!!!

M.S. | 6/23/2007, 5:51 pm EST

I am a huge CC fan and regardless of the band all the music he’s made is great. The music with Audioslave was no exception but I’m glad he’s doing solo work again. The new album is great and I hope he continues to make amazing music for another 20 years. :)

lisa 401 | 6/27/2007, 11:03 am EST

I love him solo and the new cd is awesome!!!

If you are a longtime fan, you will need to listen to it a few times to really get into it since it is sooo different.

sandrak | 6/29/2007, 2:24 pm EST

I really liked Audioslave. I thought they were a solid band and was quite dissappointed when I heard about the split. But then Chris’ solo album came out and I am more then thrilled. Carry On is amazing, I like every song on it. Safe and Sound is a beautiful bluezy song and is currently my favourite; but I also love Silence, Your Soul Today, and Ghosts very much.
As for the way Chris announced that he is splitting from Audioslave, I don’t believe in everything that is written by media. We don’t trully know what happened so I don’t pay too much attention to that. I love Chris for his talent and he has plenty of that!

hello | 9/17/2007, 4:15 pm EST

awesome that Chris quit Audioslave. it means that Chris has broken away from the preedictable musical formula that Tom and RATM has been stuck in for about 15 years now.

I wish it meant that his new solo album was good (hint: it isn’t).

I guess this is what Paris, wealth, comfort, and sobriety does to gifted rock stars. Sigh. At least we have the history.

konta | 10/18/2007, 4:32 pm EST

big soundgarden fan and AS.chris cornell has got a great voice. but lately he is having problems with singing, sometimes his voice sounds like he drank 5l of jack daniels.I belive that his state of mind is totaly diferent now with kids and family but I belive it would not prevent him to continue producing great hard rock music. these new band with thier stupid haircuts, outfits and really bad riffs are making me furious. there a just few good band left….where is hard rock going…chris do something….and bands all over the world that play in crapy clubs,do not quit, keep playing fuck all the rest.chris I wish you luck and you r family.

jeff | 10/23/2007, 5:08 pm EST

maybe chris couldn’t hang with the three Rage members and their love for communism. have you seen the giant red star they’re touring with as the stage backdrop?? not to mention their actual stated thoughts on various political topics. good move chris.

R.U. Kidding | 12/27/2007, 2:25 pm EST

Hey Chris…ever noticed that your solo stuff sucks? Most recent Audioslave stuff sucks just as bad? You would rather go to a bar-b-que than reunite w/ Soundgarden? No wonder your career is on a major downward spiral. Soundgarden is the best group you were a part of….maybe you need a good @$$ kickin’ and get back to reality. Nothing could be better than to reunite w/ the main people who brought you to the party.

Annie Coral | 1/21/2008, 11:02 am EST

Chris Cornell’s solo albums are actually really good. Both of them. And although both Audioslave and Soundgarden were amazingly good bands, it seems better music is written when people move on. He might have said he wouldn’t encourage a Soundgarden reunion, but he didn’t say he would never play in a band again, did he? Give the guy a break. You try dealing with three other musicians of equal ability with yourself when nobody has a veto. It can be hell. And eventually nothing gets done either.

thayilfan | 2/1/2008, 1:24 am EST

Good move for Chris…Soundgarden was a much more solid group than the commies !!! He went from a great band to something kind of emotionless and predictable. This’ll open the doors for him to create some real rock again.Wow,what a voice this dude’s got.SG’s great live btw…..

someonewhoknows | 1/6/2009, 8:22 am EST

cornells 2nd solo album is so poor its unbelievable – he’s forgotten how to write good songs..and as for the lyrics?? sigh.
at least audioslave split so its not all bad. a terrible terrible band.

someonewhoknows | 1/6/2009, 8:23 am EST

and the ppl referring to ratm as “commies” are hilarious!
you must be yanks, right?
read a book or something bonheads.

Blaise | 1/8/2009, 5:28 am EST

Audioslave were hands down one of, if not the, best hard rock bands of the 2000’s. They kept it simple, at the same time soulful and hard. The hooks gave me the chills and the production of the first two records were almost flawless. They got a little too fancy with the third record, but i understood where they were trying to go. Chris’ early solo work was interesting but not something i would purchase, and his new solo work eats ass. Audioslave would reunite if they knew what was good for them. -Blaise

mahase | 1/17/2009, 6:40 pm EST

cornell solo works sucks…bad as that 8 day expired milk.

camthekid | 11/11/2009, 8:30 pm EST

i guess mahase has never heard ‘Euphoria Morning’….
