Paula Tells Us How It Is in This Business

2/15/07, 5:18 pm EST

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul has proof she’s not the pill popping, wine-swigging, wet brain the tabloids claim she is. “I’ve never been drunk. I have never done recreational drugs,” the 44-year-old one-time pop star tells Us Weekly. “Just look at my 20-year career. Tell me someone who is into partying and or doing drugs that could have done that.”

A brief, off-the-top-of-our-heads list of famously addicted artists with equally long careers:

  • Keith Richards
  • Elton John
  • Iggy Pop
  • David Bowie
  • Ozzy Osbourne

You know what might be easier? Coming up with a list of musicians who’ve been in this business for twenty plus years and don’t have a history of abusing drugs or alcohol. Can you think of any?

El Fuego Phallus | 2/15/2007, 5:48 pm EST

Ted Nugent (so he says).

Jay | 2/15/2007, 5:49 pm EST

Bruce Springsteen, as far as we know he’s been clean.

jill hives | 2/15/2007, 5:52 pm EST

jonathan richman (unless ‘i’m straight’ was a joke) and ian mackaye.

mort3965 | 2/15/2007, 6:15 pm EST

Zappa

Tevin | 2/15/2007, 6:19 pm EST

ha. Bono took a big tumble in the early 90’s.

midevil | 2/15/2007, 6:37 pm EST

um… how about sober for a day?

Sllim | 2/15/2007, 6:55 pm EST

I would say Neil Young is a possible candidate.

Sllim | 2/15/2007, 6:58 pm EST

…well for the initial group…im not so sure I believe any have truly been like she is describing

Rudy | 2/15/2007, 7:06 pm EST

All those straight-edge people.

TS | 2/15/2007, 7:06 pm EST

sllim says Neil Young is a possible candidate? For what category? It’s pretty well documented that On The Beach and Tonight’s The Night was written and recorded through a haze of tequilla and drugs. Also on The Last Waltz they had to edit out the coke that was still under his nose. On the other hand he never really seemed to struggle with it either. So what category??
I don’t know if The Offspring ever really did a lot of drugs, but do they still count?
And can you really count Paula Abdul as having a 20 year carreer?

Anonymous | 2/15/2007, 7:28 pm EST

I don’t believe any of the members of Sonic Youth ever had drug/alcohol problems. But their in the minority I suppose.

1buj | 2/15/2007, 7:28 pm EST

Ian MacKaye – Fugazi
Henry Rollins

jack | 2/15/2007, 7:33 pm EST

donny osmond?

JudasConstant | 2/15/2007, 7:33 pm EST

Frankie Zappa and the Mother’s Little Helpers.

dave | 2/15/2007, 7:40 pm EST

youre so right paula. i would dance with cartoon cats and cry on national television on a weekly basis if i was sober like you.

Graham | 2/15/2007, 7:50 pm EST

Weird Al Yankovic and Donny Osmond are the only two that I can think of off the top of my head. Though the Osmonds shouldn’t count because they are Mormon, so they aren’t really people.

anonymous | 2/15/2007, 8:01 pm EST

Davey Havok is straight-edge. In the other category, Axl Rose, if you consider restarting GNR with different people continuing his career.

anonymous | 2/15/2007, 8:03 pm EST

Heh, sorry about that, Davey Havok hasn’t been in the biz for 20 plus years. My bad!

Haydz | 2/15/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Neil Young? does the song “Needle and the damage done” mean anything? I’d say that song was written on experience alone….

cowboy | 2/15/2007, 8:07 pm EST

zappa smoked and drank coffee like a fiend, though, and you’re telling me those aren’t drugs?

Lolly101 | 2/15/2007, 8:21 pm EST

Drew | 2/15/2007, 9:26 pm EST

If she has never been drunk or high at any of the “in question” times then the ONLY reasonable explanation would be that she has lapses of some sort of retardation. Nothing against her but my God, if someone put together a 15 minute news clip of all of her “wasted” appearances of the past few years, she would have a hard time explaining every single one. One by one.
Why haven’t any of the other AI personalities had to defend that sort of behavior just once and she has to do it once a month. Give me a break! The only other person we have seen in the media with a similar behavior is Anna Nicole and look where she is.

lik roper | 2/15/2007, 9:38 pm EST

weed is a good tour bus drug for winding down after playing in front of thousands of people, or that’s what i’ve heard anyway…

sweetnessfollows | 2/15/2007, 9:49 pm EST

has hasselhoff been addicted to anything before? besides his ego?

Sean | 2/15/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Needle and the Damage Done was written about Neil Young’s guitarist in Crazy Horse who Young kicked out of the band for his heroin habits, then gave him cash and a ticket to California to get rehab. He then spent the money on smack and OD’d.
I dunno if Neil did anything, but that song wasn’t about himself.

Mark | 2/15/2007, 11:20 pm EST

Springsteen is one, I’m sure he’s been drunk many times..but he’s always said that he never took any drugs.

JD | 2/15/2007, 11:27 pm EST

What about Gene Simmons. As far as I know, he has never taken drugs.

plasticfantastic7 | 2/16/2007, 12:11 am EST

PRINCE has never been into drugs

mui | 2/16/2007, 2:33 am EST

completely stone cold sober (including alcohol and cigarettes) throughout their entire career? I can only think of three:

Ian Mackaye (Fugazi)
Gene Simmons (Kiss)
Henry Rollins (Black Flag)

avirow | 2/16/2007, 2:44 am EST

Kurt Cobain hasn’t done drugs in like 12 years.

John Warnick | 2/16/2007, 7:48 am EST

I read it differently then you all did. I think she was saying that her lasting 20 years in show-biz was proof she didn’t do drugs or get drunk, not as some of you believe that she thinks she’s special for being a non-partier and making it it the business. My question to Paula is; other then a few catchy songs in the 80’s, and being a so called judge on Idol, what have you done to say you’ve lasted 20 years?

Banjo | 2/16/2007, 9:25 am EST

i know this is kind of nit-picking, but Elizabeth: every artist you listed has a 30-40 year career. i wouldn’t call that “equally long” as Paula’s. also, has she really been around for 20 yrs? crazy.
i had nothing to say so i found a fault..i’m so sorry

HST | 2/16/2007, 9:37 am EST

I don’t think it’s to bold to say Paula is the modern day Dr.? Am I right?

Josh W. | 2/16/2007, 9:46 am EST

Gene Simmons is addicted to Pussy though… Which depending on your point of view could be worse than alcohol, cigarettes, and maybe some other addictive things. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!!!

m | 2/16/2007, 9:56 am EST

pete doherty

mikeky | 2/16/2007, 10:03 am EST

Joe | 2/16/2007, 10:49 am EST

U2

danny gans | 2/16/2007, 10:49 am EST

Fank Zappa has to be the most famous in that category

Taltos1667 | 2/16/2007, 10:53 am EST

Randy Bachman

Michael | 2/16/2007, 11:08 am EST

ummm…? What about her 20 year career? She had a string of hits over the span of about 3 years at most. Is she calling American Idol where she sits in a chair all day and cries a career? I’m sorry, but I would have to take drugs to be in her shoes.

Anonymous | 2/16/2007, 11:32 am EST

Regardless of the speculation,Paula Abdul is still the humble, loveable, and DAMN sexy pop icon that we all know and love- bottom line. She’s a grown woman-leave the premeditated career suicide for Britney and Paris.

abandonedstation | 2/16/2007, 1:23 pm EST

zappa would be closest to clean off the top of my head (cigs and coffee as drugs – at least in the context we’re referring to – is rather debatable).
of course, zappa seemed to live in a constant state of weirdness (prop giraffes that shit whipped cream on stage, the lumpy gravy album, a recording studio called the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen, etc.) that most artists have to take drugs to reach.

bono as well. or maybe all the money he’s collecting for africa is going to his heroin/coke/faberge egg habit. he wears huge sunglasses all the time to cover the ravages of abuse. it would also explain the crapiness of U2’s albums since 1993.

avirow wins the award for joke of the day. it made me smile.

Larry | 2/16/2007, 1:28 pm EST

my balls

Steve | 2/16/2007, 1:33 pm EST

She’ right. She’s accomplished a lot.

daniel moore | 2/16/2007, 2:46 pm EST

who cares

Jables | 2/16/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Wait…Henry Rollins? From Black Flag? The one with all the tattoos?

I’ll admit, I don’t know a whole lot about the band, except that the guitarist was heavy into drugs and that Rollins was their third or fourth singer, and you’re saying he’s clean?

I just don’t know if people are being serious or not. More power to him if he is.

bilo | 2/16/2007, 3:11 pm EST

drugs are neato, i’m doing them now

Miguel G | 2/16/2007, 3:59 pm EST

As far as an artist is excellent. I don’t care if he/she is in drugs. Anyway i won’t follow his/her example

Lado | 2/16/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Sonic Youth have done drugs. Dont be silly.

peckerfauxwood | 2/16/2007, 10:24 pm EST

charliemapleton | 2/17/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Lenny Kravitz(even though he might’ve been out since ‘86 but that’s fair enough). When’s he gonna put out another record by the way?

lil daddio | 2/19/2007, 11:00 am EST

QUEEN | 2/20/2007, 7:44 pm EST

All of you are idiots for giving your $$$$$ to untalented people.

animal_lover860 | 2/21/2007, 2:07 pm EST

Ted Nugent and Gene Simmons. With the exception of there ravenous sexual appetite. As long as you keep “it” clean and protected, what the hell.

BK | 2/21/2007, 3:23 pm EST

Baby looks fine with all her money and nice outfits. Dont giva a F what she does on her own time.Everyone has to have a drink sometimes.

oh please | 2/21/2007, 3:48 pm EST

She has done alot of harm to those suffering from chronic pain by saying that is the reason for her actions. People on pain medication for real diseases and injuries do not act the way she does.

anonymous | 2/21/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Paula has had a great career and more power to her.
Jerry Garcia has also been clean since 95.

Katie | 2/23/2007, 9:49 am EST

H.W. | 2/23/2007, 9:55 pm EST

why,is this society so hung up on the artist, stars, actors, and what they do in their private lives?they perform for us and we pay to see them, but they owe us nothing,if we don’t like what they do then stop going to see their acts.but what they do in their private lives is their business.what do we drink or smoke when we get off work?yet we feel they owe us something,i dont’think so.

sunny3 | 2/23/2007, 11:35 pm EST

ScottPersten | 2/27/2007, 3:37 pm EST

I not only smoked crack in a DC hotel room with William Hung, but I also smoked Norman Brisker! I don’t know who is “Hung” more!

OSQGIRL | 2/28/2007, 8:28 pm EST

WHO CARES? PAULA IS FINE!

Alan Walters | 3/1/2007, 5:20 pm EST

Hey Dave Lathrop, I want in on this action. Is Norman Brisker a blowup doll?

Jack "Jackie" Collins | 3/1/2007, 10:07 pm EST

Listen up Alan Walters and Dave Lathrop. If anyone is gonna give it to Norman Brisker its me. I’m gonna give him 12 inches (including my friend Bubba) of man meat straight up his spider hole. I want to hear the bitch scream. Where can I find this Norman Brisker? Does he hang out at the Manhole like you guys do?

LordCallubonn | 3/2/2007, 10:23 am EST

Ok, how about Bad Religion.. OVER 25+ years & 0 drugs.. CAn’t beat that & have recently put out a awsome album.. How many bands thata re that old & put out albums anymore? Hell, Metallica can’t even put out a decent album after James got sober.. geeze..

ScottPersten | 3/2/2007, 3:39 pm EST

I know a lot of people only think that Paula Abdul is a blow up doll, because of all of that space between her ears, but when this become such a gay bashing blog? By the way Jackie, you can reach Norman Brisker at (602) 364-3992. It’ll cost ya though…

Dunno | 3/6/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Don’t forget about Liberace.

David Lathrop | 6/28/2007, 6:03 pm EST

CORRECTION: YOU CAN REACH NORMAN BRISKER THROUGH ME. I AM HIS PIMP. CALL (602) 364-3996. CALL ME BIG DADDY LATHROP

Norman Brisker | 11/8/2007, 4:56 pm EST

Why is my good name being soiled? I am an upstanding member of the gay, lesbian and transgender community. I have never engaged in any form of prostitution.

Alan Walters | 9/9/2008, 10:52 pm EST

I just had Norman Brisker last night. Due to the economy, he is only $10 a pop. I hope the discount is due to the economy and not disease. Even with diseases, he would still be worth at least $15. What a deal!!

Scotty Perst Perst | 12/9/2008, 5:18 pm EST

Be strong Paula, we in the community love you.
