Killers, Arctic Monkeys Adored in England, Tony Wilson Battles Cancer, And More

killers

  • The Killers and the Arctic Monkeys have cleaned up at the Brit Awards - the U.K.’s version of the Grammys. The Arctic Monkeys won Best British Group and Best British Album, while the Killers won Best International Act and Best International Album. In typical Brit Award fashion, Best International Breakthrough Act went to an American band few Americans have heard of. Hollywood’s Orson took home that prize.
  • Legendary Factory Records boss and consummate Manchester scenester Tony Wilson has been diagnosed with cancer and has undergone emergency surgery to remove a kidney, he reportedly announced yesterday. The 56-year-old rocker — who was portrayed by purported Courtney Love consort Steve Coogan in the awesome 2002 movie 24 Hour Party People — had the surgery last month but is only discussing it now, as he’s about to begin chemotherapy at the Christie hospital in Withington next week.
  • According to a new survey, nearly two-thirds of music industry execs think that removing DRM — the digital locks — from downloadable music files would improve sales, yet few believe it will actually happen.
  • The Coal Miner’s daughter is getting a college degree. Loretta Lynn is scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music. The degree will be given to the legend during her forthcoming March 17th performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Congrats, Loretta!
  • Queens of the Stone Age apparently announced yesterday on their MySpace page that you should go get laid on Valentine’s Day and that they will be releasing their new record, Era Vulgaris, in June.
  • The All Tomorrow’s Parties lineup is complete. The first weekend of the festival will take place April 27–29 and will be organized by the Dirty Three. The second weekend will take place May 18–20 and headliners will be determined partially by festival organizers, partially by fans. For the first weekend, Nick Cave will headline and other performers include Bill Callahan (the artist formerly known as Smog), Cat Power (legend in training and Bill Callahan’s ex-girlfriend,) and woodland nymph/harpist Joanna Newsom (rumored to be Bill Callahan’s current girlfriend). Interesting.
  • And from our political news desk:During a performance in Puerto Rico, Ricky Martin gave Bush the middle finger.

poop!

On the contrary, many people know and love the Killers here in the US. Perhaps it is Rolling Stone who refuses to ackowledge their unique talents and huge popularity here and around the world. Open up your minds and let them step inside…you may be pleasantly surprised

Three Cheers for the Killers! They deserve the same kudos here at home!!!

Space Pen | 2/15/2007, 11:05 am EST

Dude | 2/15/2007, 11:08 am EST

Hey Leanie I think they were refering to the band Orson as being not well known here.

And Yes The Killers RULE

John | 2/15/2007, 11:09 am EST

The Killers are great. They’re much more than the trendy teeniebopper band haters like to peg them as. At least they’re getting the play they deserve somewhere.

markx | 2/15/2007, 11:36 am EST

The Killers are a unique and incredible band, and loved here as well as internationally. Maybe if Rolling Stone didn’t give them such a poor rating for Sam’s Town, they might be able to give the Killers the respect that they are due. They definitely deserve it.

Somewhere In the Middle | 2/15/2007, 11:45 am EST

The first Killers album was great, the follow up unfortunately tried to be too many things and now Brandon Flowers is taking himself way too seriously. You’re not supposed to have to say that you are the savior of rock, other people are supposed to say it.
As for Ricky Martin, what a fucking chump. Does anyone really care what that washed up loser does? Why is that even being reported?

God, the Killers are awful, and pretentious to boot.

Congratulations to the Killers!
At least the UK knows what good music is.

rockandrollgirl | 2/15/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Congrats to the Killers on their well deserved wins! The Brits do know good music…but we in the States do as well. Just because RS gave up on this band without really giving them a chance, and because some fans didn’t like the change in sound, doesn’t mean that there aren’t many of us here in the good old U.S. of A. who appreciate the Killers.

rochelle | 2/16/2007, 2:49 am EST

what’s up with the headline? i really have to hand it to you guys for your tenacity in refusing to give credit to the killers even when they’ve clearly earned it. both the killers and arctic monkeys earned grammy noms and both have sold fairly well in the U.S., with the killers having sold 1 million of sam’s town to date. while they lost at the grammys and they’ve not yet reached the multi-platinum status of your darlings red hot chilli peppers, those grammy noms and cd sales prove it’s not only the brits see the talent in these two bands. only you guys are too blind (and stubborn) to acknowledge it.
