99.9 Percent Chance of Audioslave Breakup

2/15/07, 4:44 pm EST

audioslave
Chris Cornell has dropped the bomb. In a press release sent out to announce the release of Cornell’s new solo album Carry On (out May 1st) the singer also announces he’s leaving Audioslave. “Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave,” Cornell said. “I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors.”

Without Chris Cornell, Audioslave is just three guys who used to be in Rage Against the Machine before they were in Audioslave, so this almost certainly means the band is on the brink of an official breakup.

But what if there’s someone out there to save them? Who could step out of the shadows and lead three 90s rockers into the future with a new, fresh version of the supergroup?

We nominate Sammy Hagar, Mark Lanegan, Ed Kowalczyk, James Iha or Peter Gabriel.

Who would you pick?

hahaha, i vote serj Tankian. Audioslave was soo great. The lyrics weren’t always the best but the VOICE WAS AWESOME. RATM has lyrical meaning but the singer, Zack, had no lyrical rythym and just seemed to shout out anything that popped in his head. IT WAS THE THREE INSTRUMENTALISTS THAT MADE RATM GOOD. sorry for caps. Tim,Tom,Brad were/are what made RATM and audioslave, but with audioslave the singer hit good notes and made the music sound even better

Zack de la Rocha!

Long live Rage Against the Machine. One of the best bands of all time and they actually stand for something. Chris was good with Soundgarden but the sound was totally weak. The lyrics were generic and stupid. The band was no longer free to jam. I saw Rage at Alpine Valley and it was the greatest show I have ever seen. I truly believe that they will come back and give us the sound we need with the lyrics that make us think.

These guys were so sweet. They were my favorite band. I definitely think that they need to find a new lead singer. To all those bashing Cornell, he was kick ass. I hope they start makin music really soon.

Adrian | 4/20/2007, 1:28 am EST

Is it possible for someone to like Zack and Chris at the same time and respect them both as unique individuals for the talents they have?? Guess not.

“Americanize, Americanize, see the world through American eyes
burry the past, rob us blind, and leave nothing behind!”-genious
RAGE and Audioslave FTW

To the audioslave guy, you didn’t notice that the two bands are composed of 3 of the same musicians? Rage wouldn’t have had a 10 year history if they didn’t believe the message they were sending. If they didn’t respect Zack they would’ve ditched him long before Evil E, but no, they were behind him all the way. I mean what are you smoking??

averyangryhat | 4/16/2007, 12:11 pm EST

It’s not fair! They may of been broken up for a while, but I’m still bummed out. I didn’t even get to see them! You people who have seen them then your so lucky, and that’s probably eveyone!

Audioslave | 4/12/2007, 12:13 pm EST

Zack De La Rocha is just an angry child screaming on the microphone and all of his songs were about revolution, revolution, revoluti on which shows that he never had many experiences to write about and that he’s stuck in teenage!!! Not everything is protest!!! He sucks!! Chris Cornell has the best voice ever and his lyrics are just fantastic and there is a variety in his songs!! He doesn’t repeat himself like Zach!! Together with the three best musicians ever they made the perfect match called Audioslave!!!

Audioslave | 4/12/2007, 12:07 pm EST

Audioslave was the best band ever!!! A billion times better than Rage!!! RATM was a stupid band and Zack De La Rocha an angry child screaming on the microphone, writing songs only about revolution which shows that he never had many experiences to write about and that he’s stuck in teenage!!! He sucks!! He can’t even scream right!! Stupid voice!!! Cornell is the best voice ever and writes fantastic songs with great meaning and thre’s also a variety in these songs! He doesn’t repeat himself like Zach!!! And together with the three best musicians ever, they made the perfect band!!!

Julian Casablancas of The Strokes would replace Cornell well enough. He has a voice just as deep as Cornell’s.

BestBandinthe2000sToMe | 3/10/2007, 5:43 pm EST

This is a huge disappointment. I never expected Audioslave to be another Soundgarden or RATM. I appreciated their sound for what it was. I disagree that it is “cookie cutter” rock. Heck. For any of us who are Gen Xers, we have a lot of bands to compare them to. Everything gets jaded after a while and you have to start listening to your old CDs.

I’m not and American Idol fan, but I think that Chris Daughtry would be a decent front man. He doesn’t seem as introspective as Cornell and as hyped as Zac, but has a strong voice.

Kevin | 3/9/2007, 5:16 pm EST

Chris is an excellent studio vocalist /songwriter but NOT a good live singer
Morello’s soloing on the 2nd &3rd album annoy the CRAP out of me. Rubin should’ve intervened. Audioslave has some killer songs but never any true relevance. Cornell thinks too highly of himself unfortunately.

Army | 3/8/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Kids, RATM was always an ok band, but Zacs lyrics, though close to my heart as an ‘anti-consumer’ were and are totally childish and underdeveloped. Cornell has more talent in his pinky than Zac ever had or will have. Like the article says, the three leftovers are just 3 guys that used to be in RATM. (Though Morello probably deserves better than that)

stlcankles | 3/8/2007, 5:00 am EST

ok, well thank god that audioslave has fallen apart. there music wasnt to bad but you could tell that tom morello was like a caged bird and really didnt play like he did in rage.

for the 2 shits i give chris cornell is a good vocalistm but hes a cocky bvastard.

another thing, coachella isnt a one then done performance. if any of you would keep up you would know they are also playing another three dates later this summer with wu tang clan. its called “Rock the Bells” tour.

everyone should just come to know and love this, rage is coming back with a vengence.

oh and to whoever was talking about rage only had one good album, go listen to there albums again, but this time open your ears close your eyes and concentrate on whats going on in the music and lyrics.

reading some of the comments really starts to make me wonder how old some of you were in the ’90s when rage was tearing up the airwaves.

fuck emo, long live RATM!!!!!

Samantha | 3/7/2007, 10:41 pm EST

WHATTT!!!! Their breaking up!

Thats horible they were my favorite band of all times =( I loved them ever since I was like 9-10!!!!

Gawd! I feel like CRYING!!!!

justin | 3/6/2007, 2:25 pm EST

how can anyone say that audioslave wasnt a good band? if u think that and if u think that chris cornell should have retired than ur fucking crazy. “like a stone” is one of the most played rock songs of our generation and most known. not to mention that the rest of their debut album was a good if not better than “like a stone”. i will admit tho, i was disappointed with revelations, but either way u still gotta respect that audioslave was a great band. even now, that chris cornell is off making his own music like the 007 theme song, its still great music

Pearljammer | 3/3/2007, 3:17 am EST

Alex….i said those three bands were “some of the only” good remaining bands still around….which means that they are not the ONLY ones. I could name lots of other good bands from the 90’s that are still around too.

Billy Bread | 3/2/2007, 2:43 am EST

Hey alex, I hate to tell ya this but Live, SUX ASS!!!!!! They shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as Tool.

Alex | 3/1/2007, 11:40 pm EST

Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies has a really strong powerful voice, but I doubt he’d sing in a “hard” band like Audioslave.

Alex | 3/1/2007, 11:35 pm EST

“Pearl Jam, Tool, and Live are three of the only remaining bands that were awesome, influential, and important in the 90’s.”

Sorry, I’d have to beg to differ with you. Nada Surf is still together. The Gin Blossoms reunited a couple years ago. The Spin Doctors are still kickin’ it. Barenaked Ladies still draw huge crowds to their live shows. The Presidents of the United States of America are still around. The Cranberries are on hiatus, but haven’t officially broken up. Hell, even Hootie and the Blowfish are still making albums.

And now, to talk about Audioslave. They weren’t that bad. Tom Morello is an excellent guitarist, and Chris Cornell has an amazing singing voice. They were a truly talented band in a genre full of trash (modern hard rock/post-grunge-Staind, Bush, Creed, Nickelback, and the like come to mind). I may get a lot of flack for this, but I personally like Audioslave better than Rage. Zach De La Rocha’s rapping just didn’t do it for me, although I do like his left-wing political lyrics.

doenstmatter | 3/1/2007, 3:46 pm EST

i personally liked audiolave, although i just picked them up in the last year or so, so maybe its just the whole “new band” thingy, but whatever, i dont think that chris is gonnah have too good of a solo career, i mean, his voice was good but he needed morello and wilk and commerford to back him up. also, i dont think de la rocha should come back, yeh RATM was good, but its over and done now, just like audioslave, so find a new lead singer. i think it would be kinda cool to get somebody who totally contrasts chris, so you can tell, and sometimes i think that cleaner vocals would have been better in a lot of the songs

Joe | 2/28/2007, 9:33 pm EST

Someone with a beard…

PearlJammer | 2/28/2007, 2:15 am EST

Mark Lanegan is a nice suggestion too!

PearlJammer | 2/28/2007, 2:12 am EST

Soundgarden and RATM - it is indisputable (despite what a few may say about either band) that these two bands were great bands and highly influential. Audioslave never lived up to its overhyped potential but it still turned out to be one of the very best bands in a time when good rock groups are in low numbers. Their last album might have been a miss but is still better than most of the stuff out there today. Out of exile is an excellent album and the eponymous Audioslave album was an absolute classic…every song on there has not only listenability but just kicks a**.

As for the future of the remaining members of Audioslave I hope that Coachella brings Zach back permanently with his old mates and that RATM reunites. As for Chris…I absolutely hate when good lead singers delve into solo careers…I hope that Chris reunites with Soundgarden (which is unlikely) or perhaps Alice in Chains with Jerry Cantrell or somewhere else good.

As for all the comments about Eddie Vedder, Maynard James Keenan, and Ed Kowalczyk….Pearl Jam, Tool, and Live are three of the only remaining bands that were awesome, influential, and important in the 90’s. Especially Pearl Jam and Tool (Tool has been on a brief hiatus but came out with an album recently which is still quality). I’d not want any of them to leave their current bands.

So basically to answer the question…ZACH! RATM needs to be back together especially in this time of need with the country being purged into a right wing coservative inferno!

Remorse | 2/28/2007, 12:36 am EST

Audioslave needs Zach De La Rocha. Period.

JT | 2/27/2007, 9:25 pm EST

Bummer. Liked the 3rd album much better than the second.

It always felt a little weird.

Si | 2/27/2007, 6:35 am EST

i was a big fan of RATM and sound Garden before any of this, but put the two together and it doesnt mix. Cornells vocals are not what they used to be, and Morrello’s guitar solo’s are irritating in Audioslave. the only chance for RATM is if Zach rejoins. But Judas Priest and Sabbath still rock more than either band.

To Rube, in case you didn’t know, Audioslave and RATM are not exactly 2 seperate bands. If they did unite they would most likely just be Rage Against the Machine again.

I elect Josh Groban to be the next lead singer… just kidding :) . How about a female singer? Someone who could match the intesity of De La Rocha but also have the vocal abilities of Cornell.

maxlgun | 2/23/2007, 10:56 pm EST

That’s crazy! Now I will never get to see them live. I was very impressed after getting their third album.

Dakota | 2/23/2007, 2:13 pm EST

Yeah i agree a fourth album would just blow. Since when did they start goin harmony. Their songs also started sounding churchy! What ever happend to the old first album Audioslave. I love that album. Hopefully they get a good singer, cuz audioslave won’t sound the same without Cornell. Keep the killer sounds coming Morello!

Brian | 2/23/2007, 1:25 am EST

It’s a tie between Mike Patton and Jello Biafra. Hell, why not both?

Rhys | 2/22/2007, 1:07 am EST

Thank Christ! I don’t think i could stomach a fourth album! There first one was killer but they just never had the fire, flair and passion that both Rage and Soundgarden posessed and Cornell’s voice is nowhere near what it used to be. I think Britany Spears with her new bald drug addicted swamp donkey image would be a top choice! Seriously though Zack De la Rocha should climb out from under his rock and lay down some pollitical boogie with the boys! COME BACK RAGE, WE NEED YOU!!!

Brett | 2/21/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Even though i am extremelly sad by this, who didnt see it coming after the revelations album, wasnt quite up to par with out of exile, and audioslave, but it was still good none the less. Since ive heard that there is nearly a 0% chance that cornell will get back with soundgarden, Im praying for an audioslave reunion tour

jeremy matz | 2/21/2007, 4:09 pm EST

I think a great new singer for audioslave would be Dave Navarro. he almost sounds the same as chris cornell

petersonmi | 2/20/2007, 11:19 am EST

Dammit Chris. What did you have to go and do that for? Yes, a lot of people knocked Audioslave. Probably because it was like taking the best parts of two wrecked cars and making one good car. But even though there was an increasing amount of lame songs making it onto Audioslave albums, (Doesn’t Remind Me, Original Fire)there were a lot of ass-kicking songs.

So now what? Looks like Rage is getting back together. Good. They rock. But even though I’m desperately hoping that Soundgarden
will get back together, I can’t see Chris calling up Kim and the gang and saying “hey guys, lets make some sh#t that rocks!”. Instead I think Chris will pin hopes on Euphoria Morning 2 which will suck. C’mon Chris! Get the band back together!!!!!!!!!

Rialb58 | 2/19/2007, 5:56 pm EST

I think Shakira would be an excellent choice. She’s definitely more beautiful than the photogenic Cornell
and can do a lot more with her hips.

El Hefe! | 2/19/2007, 4:13 pm EST

I vote Maynard James Keenan. Period. There is no other that could fill the shoes of this man. Not to mention he played with the instrumental section of RATM for a 1994 cover of Kiss’ “Dr.Love”.

Collin | 2/19/2007, 3:50 pm EST

Ben Folds, what the hell, id give it a shot.

Sherry | 2/19/2007, 2:32 pm EST

The first Audioslave record was my favorite for a few years - loved it!!! - but then Tom’s guitar screeching on the 2nd record got to me big time. He ruined every song with that nerve racking guitar work. Chris Cornell is the best rock singer ever, period!! He’ll go on and Rage will not even make a ripple. Too weird. Good bye Audioslave, I loved you guys for awhile.

funkmaster | 2/19/2007, 2:29 am EST

or better yet john brown. ghetto revival. king of the burbs son.

Jroc | 2/18/2007, 10:28 pm EST

Rage and Audioslave are two totally different musical personalities. I loved both bands but Morello’s solo’s with Audioslave didn’t fit, even though they did a good job of trying to mix the two styles. I find it funny that near the release of their 3rd LP they were talking about bringing back to old school rock band thing of putting out quality LP after LP and not taking years in between.

Cornell is a good singer but he’s cocky. He thinks he’s the best thing going and the rest of the band stuck it out when he was in rehab right after they got together.

I’d like to see Soundgarden and RATM come back but it ain’t gonna happen.

Rancid Planet | 2/18/2007, 8:14 pm EST

I once Saw Chris perform his solo material off Euphoria Morning live in concert. The best reaction he got all night was when he played “Fell on Black Days” by his former band Soundgarden. So what I mean to say is I can’t wait to hear him play on his next tour as I’m sure it’ll tear the house down when he plays “I am the Highway”.

It was not good & obviously, in retrospect, the beginning of the end.”***

Don’t overdo it, man. They suck bigtime. They haven’t been great at all…. Jimi Hendrix, that’s a genius. Not a band who ripped their style from the Urban Dance Squad! (Just like RATM)

Nobody mentioned that Zak was basically a rapper, so why not bring in Slim Shady and let Dr. Dre produce the album? Maybe some guest producers like Swizz Beats… but don’t take the edge and guitar driven theme out of it…could be dope as fuck.

I honestly spent a few minutes contemplating Chuck D, but while I think he’d be a fun guest on a song or a one off like w/ pantera, I dont think he’d work well hunkered down in an actual rock song versus the freedom of rap songs… my suggestion.. how about a one off w/ vedder? he wants to be political these days…

Gabe | 2/17/2007, 7:25 pm EST

Ed Kowalczyk would be interesting. I’ve been a big fan of Live through the years, and I’d hate to see him leave. On the other hand, their music’s always been a bit more mellow than Soundgarden, and I’d like to see what combining him with the former Ragers would sound like.

Jerad | 2/17/2007, 5:42 pm EST

So long Audioslave…and Good Riddance. They weren’t near as original as they thought they were,,, seemed like corporate rock ie Nickelback.

Andrew | 2/17/2007, 5:13 pm EST

God, so many comments… here’s my take after reading everything

It’s an interesting thought that Cornell should put together another version of Temple Of the Dog, but it won’t be the same without all those Pearl Jam members around

As for reuniting Soundgarden, Matt Cameron was a huge part of Soundgarden’s weird time signatures, wouldn’t be the same without him. Besides, Cornell’s said he’s not interested. And on top of that, his voice is waay to wasted to be hitting those high notes again. Really, it’s best that he stays solo.

Now, as for the actual issue, Chuck D.’s an interesting thought, but he’s a little too old-school for Rage. De La Rocha’s voice and energy fit well for the band; it just wouldn’t feel right with anyone else at the helm. Here’s hoping that they realize this at Coachella

vin | 2/17/2007, 2:50 pm EST

Rage and Audioslave were both pretty heinous bands. I agree with an article I read a few years ago. It said that At The Drive-In is what Rage Against The Machine would sound like if they were good.

Dude | 2/17/2007, 1:35 pm EST

I don’t think it could be more obvious that the time is right for a permanent Rage reunion. First, they plan a reunion concert, then Cornell leaves Audioslave. All that is left is for Rage to announce a tour/new album.

Audioslave | 2/17/2007, 9:37 am EST

Audioslave were the best band ever!!!!!!!!! They were today’s heroes!!!!! Exactly what the world needed and still needs!!!!!! Some of you are deaf and can’t appreciate good music and you should stop throwing buulshit!!! How the hell can anyone say that Audioslave sucked?? Music was nothing before them!!!! Surely there were many great bands but when they came around music gained something unknown to many of you: Aside the great music and the fantastic Cornell’s vocals, his lyrics were just PERFECT!!!!!!! Some of you who aren’t smart enough to realize what they are about should shut up!!!! Audioslave>PERFECTION!!!!!!!!! Music has lost its essence!!!!!!! Audioslave COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wtf?! | 2/17/2007, 9:07 am EST

Zack De La Rocha ftw!

Brian | 2/17/2007, 5:53 am EST

Wow, thank God!. It’s about time. Except for their first album which had some good moments, Audioslave pretty much sucked. I hardly even like Chris Cornell anymore. He fucked up his legacy by aligning himself with the remaining members of Rage Against the Machine. What a terrible alliance! What on earth was he thinking about?

After Alice In Chains, Soundgarden was one of the very greatest, unique bands of all time. The ONLY chance he has of somewhat restoring his legacy is to reunite with Soundgarden, and even then, I think it is too late. The damage has already been done.

You know, in some sick way, it is almost a good thing that Layne Staley died. I say this only because he will be forever remembered as the greatest vocalist ever. He wrote the most brutally honest, deeply personal, and intriquing lyrics humanly possible, while at the same time, never compromising his beliefs. He is the ultimate music legend.

Yann | 2/17/2007, 2:47 am EST

Audioslave had a good first album, I went to their very first gigs in Europe but except from their loud sound, I felt nothing “particuliar” or charismatic out of this band.
Chris, keep it solo, your voice is unique. But don’t even try to reform Soundgarden : leave Matt to Pearl Jam, it’s his new home now ! So find another drummer :-) Me ? LOL

After reading this, my only input is that i think RHCP is entirely over-rated… it’s not that they’re bad, they’re just not God’s gift to music…

cheesecrop | 2/16/2007, 8:27 pm EST

I liked the majority of Soundgarden and Rage albums, but I don’t understand why everyone was down on Audioslave. They were a lot better than some of the crap floating out there the past couple years. Maybe they were missing some sort of intangible, but as failed attempts go, this one wasn’t that bad.
If Rage is a one-off like they say, I’d just go instrumental and get a rotating crew of guest vocalists to each do 2 or 3 songs per album. At least try something GENUINELY DIFFERENT.

Devinoch | 2/16/2007, 6:30 pm EST

Morello has gone on record repeatedly saying Coachella is a one-off, and that Rage is NOT reuniting.

Personally, I’m all for Greg Dulli fronting them…

I liked Audioslave but I can not wait for Rage to get back together. That will rock!!!!!

jd | 2/16/2007, 4:56 pm EST

Chuck D or Dead Prez= genius!

To Steve below | 2/16/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Umm.. What did you write you dipsh*t? Audioslave & RHCP are the only worthy rock bands on the radio?

Ever hear of a little band called Pearl Jam? Dumbass

Steve | 2/16/2007, 4:10 pm EST

I think Audioslave was excellent. Its a shame with an exception of the Chili peppers , Audioslave was the only worthwhile Rock band on the radio. Long live Rage though!!

B D | 2/16/2007, 4:10 pm EST

yes, audioslave never was good together in the first place, cornell should have retired after soundgarden. BUT STILL!!! WHY DID THEY BREAK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

B. Breeg | 2/16/2007, 3:41 pm EST

I’ve been waiting for this for years, fuck audioslave. Give me rage! ZACK! ZACK! ZACK!

nave | 2/16/2007, 3:38 pm EST

Audioslave was corporate rock at its worst, only one step above the likes of Nickelback and Evanesence. Good riddance I say.

Dead Prez! | 2/16/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Based on a lot of the weak (some of it was good) material Audioslave put out behind a true ‘rock’ singer like Cornell, I think that Rage definitly needs to find a rapper. How else is Tom Morello going to justify his record scratch guitar solos?

Dead Prez would be an amazing fit. Not only great rappers, but just as politically conscious as Morello. And they could call the band Rage Against the Prez.

This needs to happen.

Hunter | 2/16/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Audioslave had bad chemistry… They weren’t a good band together.

I’m surprised it took Chris so long to realize that.

Eddie Vedder's Beard | 2/16/2007, 3:20 pm EST

I think the Ed Kowalczyk idea is actually pretty interesting.

Joe | 2/16/2007, 3:13 pm EST

THE CHUCK D IDEA IS THE BEST SO FAR FOR RAGE. THAT OR MICHAEL FRANTI.

Mullet Man | 2/16/2007, 3:01 pm EST

I second Chuck D. Zack soudns like a 5 year old Che Guevera wannabe. That voice has no impact. But at least Cornell will fade into obscurity…remember that first solo album he did? of course you dont…

They should find a real singer, like John Corabi or something.

I’d rather Cornell teamed up with someone other than the rage-guys anyway.
Chris is a f***in great singer, and I just can’t stand those horrible “solos” that morello does.

Toby | 2/16/2007, 10:05 am EST

I saw Ornette recently and he was damn ferocious! I have seen quite a few hard rock gigs, but he was harder. This aint no joke! If they want to push the envelope get Ornette. But it would never happen seeing as I doubt that OC would listen to rage.

jd | 2/16/2007, 10:03 am EST

All I have to say is Zach De la Roch is a complete fake. How “rebelious” he was to protest a politcal convention or Wall St. but when the times got rough in the last 6 years of The Bush Doctorine, he has been NO WHERE to be seen or heard from. When the going got rough, he bailed on everyone. A complete fake and anyone that buys into this RATM Coachella appearence is just as sad. They need some more cash and you’ll hear Zach in all press leading up to and after their show saying how they need to fight the powers that be! Well, where have you been Zach? Looks like you have been “Doing what they told you” to use your own words against you. Just go away RATM/Audioslave/Etc.

Maybe thee real question is who should be in Chris’ band. Audioslave was the slave to a very unimaginative band that had they really been that great would have incorporated Chris’ guitar playing and would have had some command of dynamics other than beating even ballads over your head.

Reform Temple of the Dog, pull in afew more auxiliary members have John Paul Jones produce and suck Jerry Cantrell in to play and sing a few songs.

Kash | 2/16/2007, 9:35 am EST

ZACH DE LA ROCHA. I mean, seriously….Audioslave was boring compared to Rage.

Mike | 2/16/2007, 9:34 am EST

Mike Patton has spent his entire career experimenting with sound. The musicians behind Rage and Audioslave have done the same. The combination would be explosive ! Bringing back Rage is cool and all but it just brings us back to the Limp Bizkit era that people want to forget.

jaimelyn | 2/16/2007, 9:11 am EST

This saddens me, as I seem to be among the few who liked Audioslave just as much as RATM. It wasn’t about who sings, but the music brad, tim, and tom made has always captured my attention. and before we get too excited about an “imminent” rage reunion, lest we forget how we felt seven years ago when zack left the first time. he didn’t care enough about us to stay the first time, who’s to say old tensions won’t rise again? with that being said, I remember before chris land the gig there were rumors of rage joining forces with chuck d. now that would be awesome. so here (finally) here’s my nominee for who should lead rage: CHUCK D!

karan | 2/16/2007, 7:43 am EST

umm.. it’s obvious and staring us at our faces… BRING BACK ZACK!!! a rage reunion is imminent… they’re already performing together…

What about a mash up with some one thats dead? Perhaps Elvis?? Elvis’s old tunes spiced up with Morello riffs. When they play live just have the big E on a big 40 foot screen, and perhaps have some breakdancers also. If you had a dead lead man, then the chances of breaking up would lessen.

I personally loved all three Audioslave albums. Yes, they had a pretty clear formula. But it was a formula that consistently sounded great. I loved Rage and Soundgarden as much as the next guy, and would love to see Rage back together. But, you can’t discredit what Audioslave did just because it didn’t shake the Earth. It was great rock music. In this age of everything being so negative, all the crap that’s on the radio (i.e. Fall Out Boy and every other mascara wearing bunch of hacks, and the Nickelback-ish set of “Paycheck Bands”) doesn’t give much hope for better times. It’s just noise. Having a good “Classic Rock” band putting out 3 new albums in 5 years was exactly what I needed. So, my hats off to Audioslave. I’ll be looking forward to whatever each of them does next.

Best of luck to Cornell, but folks who go solo don’t have the best chance of terrible success

Good Riddance. Unfortunately, I watched RATM’s last show on dvd again the other day, and they are about 25%as powerful as I thought they were in 6th grade. Honestly, I feel like a RATM full on reunion would reveal the mediocrity of the band. But that doesn’t mean people wouldn’t shell out ridiculous sums of money to see them. HEY, GET AT THE DRIVE-IN BACK TOGETHER AND HAVE THEM OPEN FOR RAGE AGAIN. That I would see.

it’s funny that you guys mention mike patton because he was initially offered the lead singer job in what eventually became “Velvet Revolver.” I’ve seen peeping tom live twice, and they’re damn good. but does he have enough mainstream appeal to land them a reasonable contract?

While I don’t think anyone is ever going to compare Audioslave to an epic rock band ala Led Zeppelin, Cream or even Metallica - Rage Against The Machine weren’t even the best band of their “peak period”.

I think fans have always grossly overrated RATM and what they brought to the table.

If we want to cite Audioslave for being “unoriginal”, we simply shouldn’t ignore RATM and the repetative pattern they followed on three studio albums.

It seemed Zach DeLa Rocha could only write, sing, rap about one thing (politics)and how about this group or that group was being opressed by whatever goverment.

It’s no coincidence that Zach failed to produce this solo album he talked about, while Audioslave recorded 3 albums in less than 5 years, and toured behind two of them. Who was the REAL talent behind that band?

Their songs (with a few exceptions) didn’t really speak to me at all, and they simply seemed a favorite of the Abercrombie/frat brother/bully circuit who jumped in mosh pits for legalized assault without arrest reprecussions.

I think if RATM does indeed get back together, the reunion will be short lived. Eventually, the tensions that split the band initially will rear their heads again.

I did enjoy Audioslave’s first record, and they were pretty damn good live. But we knew this announcement was on the way around the time Cornell said he was working on a solo album, that Audioslave wouldn’t tour behind their latest album, and, finally, when the RATM at Coachella rumours started.

Maddie | 2/15/2007, 5:29 pm EST

Audioslave is nearly the most epic occurrence to happen to modern rock and roll music, with the exception of good ole’ VR.
Given the options, I think we should give Ed Kowalcyzk a chance to rise to the occasion. Well, I take it back. Chris, you’re irreplaceable.

KingSoho | 2/15/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Every Audioslave song was the exact same - Verse Chorus Verse Chorus (crazy Morello solo) Bridge Chorus Coda. They had some great songs but they weren’t very creative.

Jesus, Allah, Buddha, whoever else…bring back Rage!

Ashleigh | 2/15/2007, 5:16 pm EST

Audioslave was no match for RATM. I hope Zack and the boys reuinte for good, or atleast long enough to tour and release a new album.

djmusicK | 2/15/2007, 5:14 pm EST

While a good band, Audioslave was never the earthmoving band that many thought they would be when they first formed. Often it seemed they were close but something never quite felt right. Sometimes the sum of the parts does not equal the whole.

They did put on a great live show, but the highlights were when they covered Soundgarden and Rage — especially Rage.

Hopefully, the Rage reunion at Coachelle will not be a one-off. Rage was one of the best and most significant bands of the 90’s and it would be awesome if they stayed together again. If not, I think Brad, Tom, and Tim should just be an insturmental trio.

Rube…wtf? There is no Rage…If the remaining Audioslave members got with Zach they would be, wait for it, Rage Against the Machine!

Just an FYI

It’s unfortunate. Although not all that surprising.

I saw Audioslave in concert twice, and i think they put on a helluva good rock show. Good songs, great singer, great band.

Fans of RATM and Soundgarden obviously have their own perspectives, but those bands pooped out for a reason as well.

If Audioslave were to combine the best songs from their three albums on some kind of compilation, I think the fans may one day see them in a different lift.

Regardless it’s over. We move on.

Good luck to all four guys.

How about just getting Rage Against the Machine back together on a permanent basis? Surely, Zach has more to write about now than he did when Rage first started.

If only Audioslave’s remaining members teamed up with Rage Against The Machine together they could create a super group that would rival Audioslve and reunited Rage! Together they would be Rage against the Slave!
