Special Valentine’s Day Rock List: Best Love Songs Ever

2/14/07, 1:03 pm EST

Temptations

A look back through our list-making archives reveals that we’ve tackled a myriad of love-related lists, from saddest songs ever to sexiest, from best breakup songs (and the companion list, best Bob Dylan-penned breakup songs) to best makeout songs and best ballads. If there was ever a time to bring you an authoritative list of best love songs, pure and simple, it’s now.

Now, we’re not talking about best unrequited love songs, best songs about love lost, love abandoned, love forsaken, or love shunned. We’re talking about glorious, celebratory, hell-yeah-we’re-in-love songs. So here’s our top picks. What would you add? And why? In the spirit of the Hallmark-iest of all Hallmark holidays, humor us and, if you have a personal story behind your pick for best love song ever, tell us about it.

  • “This Will Be Our Year” – Zombies
  • “Something” – The Beatles
  • “Lovesong” – The Cure
  • “She Belongs to Me” – Bob Dylan
  • “My Girl” – TheTemptations

Can’t help myself, but I have to mention to Joey that Lifehouse is a Christian rock group and that the song “Everything” is actually about God and is sung in Christian youth groups across the country. A lot of people make that mistake though. Here’s my additions:

Elton John – “Your Song”
Bryan Adams – “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You”

and my wedding song:

Ben Folds – “The Luckiest”
