Gibson vs. Stratocaster?…..TELECASTER!!

The tele is the perfect combination of the Les Paul (big pickup and solid bridge) and the strat (Fender mix and match pieces, smaller size)

Keith Richards, Billy Gibbons, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty,Albert Collins, Steve Cropper,Pete Townshend. It’s a great rhythm guitar, a great Country Guitar (esp. w/ a b-string bender) and put a big fat humbucker pickup in the neck and it out Gibsons a Les Paul

luke | 2/12/2007, 3:46 pm EST

ok, someone should really take off the comment about Eddie Van Halen, let’s be serious now. Anastasio would have been a great pick as well, Garcia is dead, but the three with the title are all amazing and deserve the recognition.

ox colormestupid | 2/12/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Well, hes not necessarily new [16 or so years in the business..], but he’ll always be my favorite..

billie joe armstrong can’t play worth a shit stupid 3 chord monkey

Rob | 2/12/2007, 4:57 pm EST

1976, everyone is playing les pauls and strats and in a blues based structure. Five years later and everyone is shredding, using crazy whammy dives and 2 hand tapping. What happened? Van Halen. Sure, there are 100 guitar players since who are technically more proficient but nobody changed the sound and techniuqe of the instrument like Eddie did. Hendrix would be the other. Trey, Frusciante, Mayer are all great players but did nothing to change the way a guitar is played or made. Period.

XOmusic | 2/12/2007, 5:12 pm EST

gibson vs. strat? not a fair balance, one guitar vs a whole company? i choose Ibanez Jet King!

Jennifer Hsu | 2/12/2007, 5:55 pm EST

Ang,
Click on the play [triangle] button on the bottom left…

luke | 2/12/2007, 6:22 pm EST

playing guitar is about feeling and soul, a good player and evoke their emotions in the listener, van halen played like a machine with no feeling or emotion, he sounds like a synthesizer programmed to sound almost like music.

naomi | 2/12/2007, 6:36 pm EST

“Mayer just keep on gabbing,as long as I can just look at Frusciante I am a happy woman!!!!”

ahahah
quote of my life!

no but all 3 of these guys are amazing

Moe | 2/12/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Ang,I hope you get to see the video, Mayer hogs most of it,but a little Frusciante is better than a whole lotta Mayer!!!!

ekp | 2/12/2007, 7:57 pm EST

Why is it that everytime someone does a list of Guitar Gods there is only rock guitarist on it. There are countless classical, spanish, blues, folk and jazz greats that are never on a list like this. Rock is my favorite genre to listen to but for some reason when i play my guitar i tend to play classical and jazz.

Dylan | 2/12/2007, 8:46 pm EST

john mayer can kiss my ass he sucks. he just thinks he’s a good stevie ray vaughn and jimi hendrix type player. but he sucks and cant even compair to them in any way shape or form. he’s usless. kiss my ass you suck.

Ang | 2/12/2007, 10:00 pm EST

Most defenitly, Moe. Frusicante can top mayer anyday :) RHCP are amazing Frusicante has way more talent and appeal, and he’s defenitly a cutie:)

Anonymous | 2/12/2007, 10:48 pm EST

Danielle | 2/12/2007, 11:54 pm EST

Where is Dean Ween on this stupid list?

Bertie | 2/13/2007, 10:09 am EST

Wot the hell you lot chatting about! The greatest Gibson player EVER Gary Moore. Ground Breaking he took his inspiration from Peter Green & Stevie Ray Vaughan, alone two gracious players who set standards. Another guy to sow seeds was David Gilmour, the
beautiful cries from his Strat standing proud till this day.Today Joe Satriani sets the benchmark way above any one else & can play any style. Funk Jazz Blues Rock, hes got it all & he taught a lot of the new guys on the block how to play.
Developing a unique sound with a precision built instrument….
Yep the Ibanez. Sorry Chaps!

Palominos | 2/13/2007, 1:26 pm EST

Mike McCready…………

Jeremy | 2/13/2007, 2:05 pm EST

Rolling stone is too obsessed with pop culture and don’t care about the music. If this was a real guitar gods list i don’t think that John and John would have made it on the cover. They would defeinitely be on the list, but there better guitarists. Derek should have been front and center because despite that fact that no one knows about him (because he’s not on the radio.. too good for it), he is possibly the best slide player ever. Yes, better than Allman.

Anonymous | 2/13/2007, 3:04 pm EST

Saw Mayer on the Grammys… Borrrrrring. He’s a guitar god to the TeenBeat crowd. He should stick to pop records. Maybe get a gig on Jessica Simpsons next album.

Mike27 | 2/13/2007, 4:07 pm EST

As for the debate…definately Les Pauls – strats just have a really thin tone.

Jason | 2/13/2007, 4:54 pm EST

All you people that say John Mayer is not a guitar god have obviously never seen him play live. He is certainly worthy to be on the front/center of the cover. The people at Rolling Stone know exactly what they’re doing.

Anonymous | 2/13/2007, 5:27 pm EST

A Guitar God should not be measured by just his proficiency on the guitar but also by the overall sound he/she can achieve in a greater musical sense. Because of this and a difference in taste among people there can never be a clear cut list of Guitar Gods. Of the three I admire Frusciante the most because of his ability to “master a melody” as I like to put it. But I also enjoy Mayer for his fusion of blues and pop, some people forget that the Beatles were pop stars first. And I love Truck’s ability to slide, and that is to say that I think he is a better slide player then Johnny Winter. Having said this, to compare the three to each other or any other guitarist is to compare apples to oranges.

Roco | 2/13/2007, 9:00 pm EST

John Frusciante could make any guitar sound good.

rad | 2/14/2007, 3:54 pm EST

never had the chance to see any of them live, but thank god for technology.

for music’s sake, dang, all three of them are great guitarists with their own distinct qualities and histories. what’s all fuss about?

although i just wanna give my hats off to john frusciante(and also the rest of rhcp). thanks for being such an inspiration to all kids out there going through the same shit you’ve gone through. big fan. much love.

Klaatu | 2/14/2007, 10:21 pm EST

I love Frusciante. About the nicest thing I can say about Mayer is that he is bringing guitar back into the mainstream.

A lot of damage was done to the art of guitar playing in the late 80’s. Hair bands had chops but no soul. Two-hand tapping was interesting for about five minutes, but it wasn’t expressive.

In the 90’s, I actually saw interviews where guys boasted that they couldn’t play very well. Now, that’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it is not something to brag about! So, if it takes a John Mayer to bring strats back, so be it. I play a newer strat and a 74 Les Paul, and I like them both.

T | 2/15/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Frusciante RULES!!!

Zitronensaft | 2/15/2007, 4:43 pm EST

chr | 2/16/2007, 12:13 am EST

Now, I know many of you are probably new to Derek Trucks, and that is understandable considering that he isn’t a pop star. A few things worth considering – First, he started touring with the allman’s when he was 11 years old. Secondly, while not being well known in pop circles, he has gained a reputation in the “jam” scene over the last 10 years as being one of the best (if not the best) guitarists of his generation. Anyone who has heard Derek, and I have heard all three of these guitarists on numerous occasions, will never forget the sound that comes out of his super reverb. He truly has a sound of his own. As far as his slide abilities are concerned, he hands down has the most technical ability ever, period (aside from many of the great classical Indian musicians). Anyone who is knowledgable regarding slide guitarists will instantly recognize Derek Trucks’ unparalled ability with the glass bottle.
For anyone who is interested in hearing derek, there is a website (http://www.archive.org/browse .php?collection=etree&field=%2 Fmetadata%2Fcreator) where you can listen and download live recordings.

Dena | 2/16/2007, 11:04 am EST

All I have to say is if you ever are fortunate enough to witness John Mayer playing the guitar live in a small venue, you WILL KNOW he is a guitar God!!

John & Derek are incredible as well!!

masa | 2/17/2007, 2:44 am EST

Derek is great!Fruscianteis good.
Mayer is SUCK.

John Dripski | 2/21/2007, 3:53 pm EST

I think since this is “the new guitar gods”, you errored by not including Kenny Wayne Shepard in your list. I think his rendition of Voodoo Chile would make Jimi Hendrix proud.

Anonymous | 2/21/2007, 4:25 pm EST

Zakk Wylde should have been on this stupid list. Here is a guy who plays more than anyone I can think of. That work ethic has made him the greatest all round guitarist alive. There are lots of good guitarist out there sure, but very few have the whole package.. That should count huge.
Songwriting
Recording

Live shows (skill & stamina)
Presence…

spike | 3/1/2007, 10:16 pm EST

i do not understand how Matthew Bellamy of MUSE did not make it onto the list. he is better than at least half of the players on the list.

tom | 3/9/2007, 6:58 pm EST

mccready is god….

tom | 3/9/2007, 7:03 pm EST

lets not forget about Stone Gossard. He’s an amazing song writer

The Truth | 3/11/2007, 3:11 pm EST

You guys are missing the point and the reason a guy like Vai, Malmsteen or Zakk Wylde doesn’t compare to a John Frusciante, Jimi Hendrix or hell, even a Derek Trucks or John Mayer.

Wylde is incredibly fast on his guitar, but tell me a piece of music he’s composed that is beautiful? Tell me a piece of music he’s composed that made you feel?

This is what a guitar god does, he makes beautiful music, spliced with technical ability and the ability to make the guitar talk.

Wylde never had that.

Katie Katie Bo Batie | 3/12/2007, 8:21 pm EST

John Mayer Woop Woop!

Peter Griffin | 3/13/2007, 8:46 pm EST

John Frusciante Amazing Guitar player
even though it was the 3 guitar gods the photo seems like its more focused on mayer

Mike Stranger | 3/16/2007, 3:04 pm EST

Thanks 123 adware

haygood | 3/17/2007, 10:59 am EST

ya’ll..i know you like your certain guitar players..but these three really deserve it..john is great..so is derek..but if you have ever seen john mayer play live then your perspective will be changed about him because he is awesome at playing the guitar..some of his solo’s just top anything i’ve heard so far

kl | 3/21/2007, 6:55 am EST

what about navarro????????
you guys are crazy….
think!

k | 6/5/2007, 8:43 pm EST

first of all this is the best guitarists under 30, so you can’t compare them to all time great players. These three definitely deserve to be on the list.

Queenie | 7/2/2007, 12:45 pm EST

Mayer sucks, He is a poser and is trying to steal the blues spotlight. My God, People need to stay with what they are good at. Blues ain’t this guys thing. He is a joke and embarrasing. Get out of the way John for the REAL deal!

beth | 7/2/2007, 4:42 pm EST

woot woot 4 John Frusciante! Saw RHCP in concert and he was amazing!!

Nick | 8/6/2007, 10:10 am EST

It does amaze me how much hatred is out there for Mayer. I have to say Your Body is a Wonderland is just.. well, awful, and I was shocked he ever released it. But for people still to hate him for this? Come on…
People here need to grow up and see past what some needed to do to survive. Great technical skill, and deep emotional playing make him more than qualified for this spot.

Chances are he is in the center rather than John Frusciante, simply because he is far far more marketable. He has a name, and songs all over, legions of fans, and is a far better complete package when you add in voice and song writing.

Don’t mistake a different style for bad playing, when you do, you prove you know nothing about music.

EndGame | 1/9/2008, 8:58 pm EST

Synyster Gates is a better guitarist then any of these morons.
