For years I’ve been praising Bob Dylan as a songwriter, having written both the best- and worst-covered songs ever: Hendrix launching Watchtower to dizzying heights of guitar acrobatics, and Guns n Roses karaoke-style slaughter of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

Mykl | 2/9/2007, 10:05 pm EST

Nirvana’s “The Man Who Sold the World” NEEDS to be on this list, and, even though it’s only a live bootleg, A Perfect Circle’s cover that mixes Ozzy’s “Diary of a Madman” with The Cure’s “Lovesong” is one of the most stellar.
Also, though likely no one on this board has heard it, Starlit’s cover of Bowie’s “Modern Love” is incredible.

Brian | 2/10/2007, 4:13 am EST

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s version of Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile” Check it out.

Maciej | 2/10/2007, 6:50 am EST

Don’t you remember? Jelous guy by Roxy Music (no 1 after John Lennon death) also SRV “Voodoo Chile(slight return)” + “Hey Joe” by Hendrix (as it was mentioned by someone in the list, it isn’t Hendrix’s song).

adam | 2/10/2007, 6:58 am EST

jeff buckley’s hallelujah

Helvis | 2/10/2007, 7:19 am EST

Maciej’s talking about the right Roxy Music EP, but their “Jealous Guy’ is not as good as Donny Hathaway’s version, but their cover of “Like A Hurricane” is the best ever. Ramones did a great “California Sun”. David Johannson did a great “Buttercup” at the Bottom Line in ‘78.

Gaz | 2/10/2007, 7:30 am EST

I think a great cover makes you sit up & notice a song that you never really thought that much of.

Billy Bragg’s take on 70’s disco with “When will I see you again”.
U2 nails it beautifully with “Everlasting Love”.
Gram Parson’s aching “Green Green Grass of Home” made me realise it’s not the song that I hated..it was Tom Jones.
Bowie bettering Pixies with “Cactus”.
Pixies bettering Neil with “Winterlong”.
Neil hasn’t really bettered anybody. He’s better off with his own material…Four Strong Winds was good though…

Helvis | 2/10/2007, 7:30 am EST

Quicksand by Dinosaur Jr.
Pretty Woman by Van Roth

Neal | 2/10/2007, 8:11 am EST

Rage Against the Machine covering Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm” and Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave’s “Mercy Seat”.

I didn’t get either song until I heard the covers.

Helvis | 2/10/2007, 8:19 am EST

Okay Gaz, I see what you mean. In that sense, I have to say the best example is Aztec Camera’s transcendant version of Van Roth’s “Jump”! Or, Judy Collins doing “Both Sides Now”, or the Minutemen covering Blue oyster Cult, or Terry Reid doing Phil Spector on his “River” album. But, the ultimate example of what you are talking about has to be Lou Reed’s powerful version of John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth” from his live double album, “Take No Prisoners”. Top Jimmy had the d.j. play that track before the Rhythm Pigs hit the stage at the Central(later called the “Viper Room”) one New Year’s Eve after the opening band(Green On Red) finished their set, stunning the crowd. Then Jimmy and the Pigs killed the crowd with their amazing cover of the Doors “Roadhouse Blues”(after slaying them with their version of “There Stands the Glass”)!

Joe | 2/10/2007, 11:36 am EST

CCR’s 11 minute opus of “I Heard it Throught the Grapevine”

U2’s remix of “Night and Day”, Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love”, and “Unchained Melody” are all impeccable choices and covered beautifully. Oh and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is a great romp thru that tune.

Prince’s version of “One of Us” (which he wrote) is awesome; both the studio version and the live performance of it for the VH1 Fashion awards a few years ago(i think?) far outweigh Joan Osborne’s version.

Joe | 2/10/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Oh and speaking of “Satisfaction” covers, DEVO’s always makes me smile. One of the best.

KB | 2/10/2007, 4:03 pm EST

Ok, first of all…Prince DID NOT write “One Of Us”. Eric Bazilian wrote it…and the Hooters did the original. As for best covers, I definitely agree with a lot here like Cash’s version of “Hurt”, Hendrix’s “Watchtower”, Buckley’s “Hallelujah”, Cake’s “I Will Survive”…and I’ll throw in Cash’s cover of “Personal Jesus”, Buckley’s version of “Kick Out The Jams”, Gary Jules’ cover of “Mad World”, Joe Strummer also (during live shows) would do an awesome cover of “Blitzkrieg Bop”, Alison Krauss’ version of “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You” and the Sundays version of “Wild Horses”.

DrJ | 2/10/2007, 4:15 pm EST

Husker Du-Eight Miles High

Jeff | 2/10/2007, 4:17 pm EST

Jimi’s version of All Along The Watchtower is my favorite also.
Yes cover of America by Simon & Garfunkle is rather unique.

Bunny | 2/10/2007, 4:24 pm EST

Big Mountain: Peter Frampton’s “Baby, I Love Your Way”

The Afghan Whigs: Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love Babe”

Urge Overkill: Neil Diamond’s “Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon”

Nirvana: David Bowie’s “Man Who Sold The World”

Jeff | 2/10/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Eric Clapton’s cover of Jimi’s Little Wing as well as Sting’s cover of Little Wing—all three versions are very different yet each is stunning.

Nirvana’s cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” is haunting
Hootie and the Blowfish cover of Led Zepplin’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do” is awesome

Bangers-n-mash | 2/10/2007, 5:36 pm EST

Hmm, one that was highly and sadly overlooked by these editors is Hallelujiah as dine by Jeff Buckley. Well.. and maybe anything else he covered too (check out Live at Sin-e album for those)

Also… want good cover tunes? Get yourself a CD copy, or a now on the endangered species list VHS copy of the 30th Anniversary Bob Dylan Concert. It’s worth it just for the Clapton version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”

It begins and ends with the Clash’s cover of “I Fought the Law.” After that, it’s any song covered by Springsteen, The Beatles Twist and Shout, Jeff Buckley’s Hallejulah, and The Rolling Stones Not Fade Away, which made the Buddy Holly original sound rather tame.

Pearl Jam, Cover Band. Man they oughta release something of their live shit. I mean, so many songs…Throw Your Arms Around Me, Trouble, The New World, People Have the Power, Bleed For Me, – or for that matter, the countirfied version of the Ramones’ I Believe in Miracles…it just goes on. They are just so underrated, whatever y’all think of em.
Others, ain’t no arguin’ everyone who sings Jeff Buckley’s praises of Mr Cohen’s Hallelujah, or how about Ben Harper’s cover of Sexual Healing? Glad someone mentioned the Black Keys there too. And Sonic Youth’s Superstar? Shit, that whole Carpenters compilation kicks ass.

Columbus Joe | 2/10/2007, 11:25 pm EST

Good cover: Red Red Wine by UB40. There are plenty more. Like Do Ya Wanna Touch by Joan Jett, Give a Little Bit by the Goo Goo Dolls, California Sun by the Ramones, and many, many more – too many to list here.

Horrible covers: Jessica’s Simpson’s Take My Breath Away (trash, like everything she does), I Love Rock’n'Roll (ditto – pure blasphemy, a total disgrace)

Brad | 2/10/2007, 11:54 pm EST

Stevie Ray Vaughn – Little Wing

The best cover of them all is Daniel Johnston’s version of “Live and Let Die”! He replaces a couple of lines of Macca’s lyrics to bring the song up to a new plateau of profundity.

Helvis | 2/11/2007, 7:19 am EST

Maciej, “Like a Hurricane” was recorded after Eno. Ten Years After(TYA covered “Woodchopper’s Ball”,but I digress). It was on the same record as their cover of “Jealous Guy”, which you were talking about in your post. There are only four songs on that EP. How could you have missed “Like A Hurricane”?

Helvis | 2/11/2007, 7:43 am EST

Marnr7, I love Frank Black, but his cover version of “Dark End of the Street” is nowhere near as good as the one by the Afghan Whigs on the What Jail is Like EP, that also contains the best Supremes cover by a rock band, ever. Frank Black has the best cover of Brian Wilson’s “Hang On To Your Ego” on a different CD.

Matt | 2/11/2007, 8:31 am EST

Best:

Here are few great covers pretty left of field, getting weirder further down the list:

OP8 – Sand (Some gender bending. Actually rather nice. Howe Gelb and Lisa Germano.)

Rotfront – The Robots (Russian language folk/hip-hop cover of that Kraftwerk song. Some folks mainly based in Berlin, as far as I know. Infectious. Needs to be heard to be believed.)

Ed Kuepper – Highway To Hell (AC/DC. On an acoustic guitar. And a boom box. Nothing else.)

Les Reines Prochaines – Wicked Games (Cover is titled ‘Opfer dieses Liedes’, literally ‘victims of this song’. They are actually from Basel, Switzerland. Can’t stop grinning whenever I put this on. Poor Chris Isaak.)

Allison Crowe – “Hallelujah”
a definitive version of Leonard Cohen’s song (which has, too often, fallen victim to tepid troubadors)

Actually, any cover by Crowe could top the list – and she’s done plenty, from Counting Crows’ “A Murder of One” through Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, Pearl Jam and more.

Allison Crowe is the greatest cover artist I’ve heard in my life. Remarkably, she’s also one of the greatest original singer-songwriters we have today.

PJ Sparks | 2/12/2007, 8:52 am EST

Do fans of other bands argue over what cover songs a band does best more than Pearl Jam’s fans? Lord knows us spoiled PJ fans have a ton to choose from.

I don’t think I’ve read anyone posting about Phish’s Halloween shows where they have covered entire records, including The White Album, Quadrophenia, Remain in Light, and Loaded.

Sleater-Kinney have done some great ones also – Springsteen’s The Promised Land, Danzig’s Mother, Bikini Kill’s Riot Grrl, and perhaps the only band that does justice to Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit.

Jack | 2/12/2007, 8:54 am EST

Lenny Kravitz – American Woman
Ugly Kid Joe – Cat’s in the Cradle

cws | 2/12/2007, 10:33 am EST

All Along the Watchtower has to be the greatest cover ever. Even Dylan acknowledges that Hendrix’s version is the definitive version of the song. Speaking of Dylan…
I don’t know if it technically counts as a cover, but I think Springsteen deserves some credit for his performance of One Head Light. He performed this with the Wallflowers at some award show and just completely steals it from them. Jakob Dylan sits there looking like he’s waiting for his dad to save him. Priceless. Be sure to check it out on youtube.

Sherry | 2/12/2007, 10:52 am EST

Sinead O’Conner’s cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2u.

No disrespect to the late Elvis Presley, but he is eventually, blatantly known for jacking artists’ original songs at their expense-r&b artists at the most.I was watching Saturday’s NBA All Star Game, and when I heard his supposed “remake” of Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life”,I was lead to ponder was this a matter of THEFT-or HONOR.Fascinating.Ironically,a great cover group known as UB40 managed to ace one of Elvis’s originals,”I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” which I thought they kilt.I think they get more of a wager than “The King” himself.Truth hurts.
