- Al Gore is apparently set to make a huge announcement today in which he reveals plans to put on a series of climate change concerts that will “dwarf” Live Aid. The concerts will apparently take place July 7, and will involve film, music and television content taking place in seven cities including London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto. According to an insider, unlike Live Aid, this event will not be about increasing awareness, but rather about taking action. “Live Aid was about asking people to stump up money, this is about effecting systemic change.” Al Gore for president … again.
- Apparently all that intense, Sabbath-like squealing and riffing wasn’t enough of a trip to the dark side for Australian rockers Wolfmother. The band promises that their next record (which they’ve been working on but has no release date yet) will be more of the same. “Songs like ‘Joker & The Thief’ and ‘Woman’ were just relentless and totally in your face,” Wolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale reportedly said. “I feel like there’s an element of that in the new songs.”
- The new Killers video for “Read My Mind” is really sweet, and we mean that in the least patronizing way possible. It features adorable Japanese school children and unicycles.
- Today an autopsy will be performed on Anna Nicole Smith’s body. The star died yesterday at a South Florida hospital after being discovered unconscious in her hotel room.
- Bloc Party are searching for a substitute for drummer Matt Tong, who has a serious respiratory condition (which caused his lung to collapse during the band’s last US tour) and is likely to suffer complications during the band’s upcoming UK tour, which could force date cancellations unless a stand-in is found. UPDATE: Matt Tong is fine! According to his US publicist, reports that the drummer is unwell, and that the band may need to replace him on their upcoming tour, are false. Glad to hear it Matt.
- Legendary composer Ennio Morricone, who is set to receive an honorary Oscar at this year’s ceremony, has announced that had hoped he would never receive an Oscar. “After five nominations I expected nothing, in fact I hoped I’d remain without an Oscar,” he told reporters at the Foreign Press Association,” he said. “I would have remained in the company of illustrious non-winners.”
