Noel Gallagher Blasts Bono, Taylor Hicks Set to Infiltrate Austin’s Underground and More

2/8/07, 3:06 pm EST

Oasis

  • Noel Gallagher has reportedly slagged off both Bono and Thom Yorke for touting their political opinions at the expense of the rock. With respect to Yorke Gallagher reportedly said: “Thom Yorke sat at a piano singing, ‘This is fucked up’ for half an hour. We all know that, Mr Yorke. Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit there twiddling, going, ‘We’re all doomed’, at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play ‘Creep.’ Get over it.” And with respect to Bono, Gallagher was more to the point: “Play ‘One,’ shut the fuck up about Africa.”
  • Taylor Hicks is playing SXSW? Whoa. Does that mean that Hicks is going after indie cred, or does it mean that SXSW has finally gone totally mainstream? Both? Other artists on the first round of SXSW lineup confirmations include Bloc Party, the Good, the Bad & the Queen, the View, the Cinematics, the Stooges, Lily Allen and Kings of Leon.
  • Arcade Fire will perform five sold out shows at the Judson Memorial Church in New York next week, and those cool hounds at NPR will apparently be webcasting the last ones on All Songs Considered. Arcade Fire: Making serious music for serious people since 2004.
  • This morning Britney Spears was rumored to be a lesbian; this afternoon, she’s not. Crazy.
  • Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner is so spontaneous. The singer was apparently shopping in Sheffield when he whipped out his laptop and played a track, possibly called “Satisfaction,” for fans who’d gathered around him. Apparently the song is supposed to be the B-side to “Brainstorm,” the band’s next single.

I don’t think that there is anyone else who deserves there jaw ripped off more than Noel Gallagher

I’d rather hear woody guthrie or bob dylan – or System of a Down – sing the news than read it in bullshit papers like the WashPost or NYTimes. Or than listen to Beatles-imitator Gallagher slap off other bands – why doesn’t he just go join the Flamin’ Groovies and stop pretending he’s an original songwriter?

white | 2/8/2007, 3:30 pm EST

OH MAN! that is the greatest thing that Noel Gallagher has EVER said! I love it! Especially the Bono part: “Play ‘One,’ shut the fuck up about Africa”…soooo great and true.

And Taylor Hicks at southbysouthwest? makes me shudder just thinking about it.

Ne-Gro | 2/8/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Noel is correct. Music acts and hollywood don’t know the facts.

BrokeNeck Nathan | 2/8/2007, 3:33 pm EST

I think Bono has used his fame for some good and I love, love, love Radiohead, but that Noel Gallagher is a funny motherfucker.

Wanker | 2/8/2007, 3:36 pm EST

Noel and Bono are buddies from what I understand, I don’t think Bono would take the comment too serious. Bono even dedicated a song to Noel on U2’s last album. Bono wrote the song after a conversation he had with Noel about Bono’s dad dying.

The world would be a much duller place without Noel, I think he’s the most quotable musician out there. My favorite quote from Noel is when he told an interviewer “Call me whatever you want to, just don’t call me Aerosmith.”

Space Pen | 2/8/2007, 3:40 pm EST

i the gallaghers. even if they praised bono for-i don’t know- trying to better the world?!…i still wouldn’t like them. they’re every character trait i hate about people rolled into two: obnoxious, cocky, ignorant–PRICKS!

Patrick | 2/8/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Another pathetic attempt for Mr.Gallagher to get his name back in the headlines. It is amazing to me that he can even remember what people want, after all it has been so long since his peice of shit, pathetic, Beatles rip off band, has done anything signifigant.

Anonymous | 2/8/2007, 3:43 pm EST

Why doesn’t Noel Gallagher ’shut the fuck up’ instead of saying bullshit?

Kit | 2/8/2007, 3:56 pm EST

At least Bono is trying to make a difference in the world instead of just pissing and moaning about it.

jill hives | 2/8/2007, 4:03 pm EST

i bet noel was hammered when he said that, and half-joking/half-venting some frustration over u2 and radiohead being much more popular in america than oasis is anymore.
ah well. i still love you dude!

paul | 2/8/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Bono forgot about the music a long time ago. I don’t care what he thinks about politics. Everything stopped after the Joshua Tree.

ps Oasis rocks!!

B-Rett | 2/8/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Noel is a bad ass, he’s friends with Thom and Bono, and he’s screwing around.
SO WHAT if he says that shit? It’s fuckin Noel Gallagher and he’s gre best songwriter of this generation.

KCV | 2/8/2007, 4:14 pm EST

I like oasis and U2….I almost have to agree with noel-that is partially why there are such long gaps between U2 lp’s…..noel is a character i have to admit!

Venezuelan Born | 2/8/2007, 4:15 pm EST

U2 is the best band in the world. Oasis is great as well…I am sure Bono and co. take the comments as they were intended — half jokingly.

Ling Sung | 2/8/2007, 4:18 pm EST

is noel garregher britney’s baby daddy? oooh, she dye her hairs. yep, she slut.

Joe | 2/8/2007, 4:23 pm EST

The Gallaghers and U2 have had a longstanding mutual admiration society going back to the POPMart tour. That is Noel’s way of saying “Hey Bono, get your ass in gear and crank out that album!”

ice water | 2/8/2007, 4:28 pm EST

Funny, that Noel. Coming from a guy who hasn’t had a hit in a decade, and speaking about two of the top five bands in the world.

Somebody should tell Noel that, yes, the world is effed up…somebody still buys yr records. Oh, and also, play “Live Forever”, douche, and stop slagging yr betters.

Leslie | 2/8/2007, 4:41 pm EST

“ice water”, oasis’ last album was a huge success, and the two singles from it went to number 1. what are you talking about?

i can see where noel is coming from, bands like greenday, and even thom yorke, get on my nerves a little. but i think bono is very genuine and is actually trying to make a difference, so it’s not as obnoxious…overall though, I agree with Noel.

Noel Gallagher's Septum | 2/8/2007, 4:49 pm EST

America has forgotten about Oasis, or maybe we just don’t give a shite.

Limey’s Suck!

Noel Gallagher's Septum | 2/8/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Oasis = Poofsters

No one came to your show’s last time round in America.

Add insult to injury and dis your U.K.’s best exports…………all class, no ass.

Ishmael | 2/8/2007, 4:58 pm EST

Noel Gallagher is defiantly apolitcal, and nothing irritates people like him more than people who are passionate about their political beliefs, so just consider the source. I like Oasis, but I also like U2 and Radiohead, and I happen to think that there’s a place in the world for both politicos and apoliticos. And either way, Noel is damned funny, if nothing else. That’s entertainment, folks. So, love him or hate him, but he sells magazines, and he gets supporters and haters alike both posting every time he opens his mouth. Long live rock.

Wanker | 2/8/2007, 5:30 pm EST

Hey Noel Gallagher’s Septum, did you know that Oasis sold out MSG on their last tour (plus everywhere else)? I can give you dozens of top 40 artists that couldn’t fill up half that venue.

Mike27 | 2/8/2007, 5:30 pm EST

Well said Noel. People need to realize politics and rock music do not go together.

Stuff | 2/8/2007, 5:37 pm EST

Noel should shut up about telling other artists to shut up and just play music.

Anon | 2/8/2007, 5:41 pm EST

When bono stops being a fashion princess i’ll start to believe that maybe he’s really as selfless as he says. I just get the feeling he half does it for the praise.

J | 2/8/2007, 6:24 pm EST

noel gallagher is the most annoying person in rock and roll. he once clearly stated he does it for the money, and he’s just plain stupid sometimes.

wunderboy | 2/8/2007, 6:32 pm EST

Hicks is a dud, plain and simple. Soccer moms may swoon, but the rockers get it, and couldn’t care less about this “Idol”. Heard his cd? Flash in the pan, guaranteed.

Warzawa | 2/8/2007, 6:47 pm EST

Hahahahaha…BRILLIANT. Just fucking BRILLIANT. I don’t really like Oasis but Noel couldn’t have said it better. Get off your fucking horse…you’re not Jesus, you’re pop musicians.

wunderboy | 2/8/2007, 6:47 pm EST

My dear wife asked me to take her to see Hicks in concert. I put on “Otis Blue” and told her to grow up.

Graham | 2/8/2007, 7:44 pm EST

I can live with Bono doing his political thing because he does seem to be genuine about it. However, the likes of Thom Yorke and Chris Martin do piss the hell out of me. Who the fuck are they to tell me about politics? Do they hold some sort of professional degree on the matter? No, so fuck off. If they were busting their asses to change things for the better than I would understand, but they just like to bitch about stuff so that praise can be heaped onto their swollen egos. I’m not lauding Gallagher’s apathy, but at least the man is honest about who he is.

Graham | 2/8/2007, 7:45 pm EST

i can’t spell

anonymous | 2/8/2007, 7:56 pm EST

Noel is the one who needs to learn to shut the hell up. He’s such a jerk.

Lobsters | 2/8/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Noel Gallagher is fucking great and Bono isn’t good enough to fetch him a beer.

BooYah | 2/8/2007, 9:03 pm EST

Anyone who has an enormous celebrity spotlight on him, and still has the heart to use that to benefit others, rather than wallow in self-aggrandizement and greed – well, that guy gets my respect. Gallagher’s the other type, apparently.

As for Hicks – he’s always been indie. Always been the real thing. He took that TV show for all it was worth. Good on him. His post-Idol CD’s got to be a pop-compromise, naturally. I look forward to the 2nd, which he says will be more “raw and organic.” By the third, we should be cooking real nice. I hope.

Debs | 2/8/2007, 9:14 pm EST

Yah Boo

Chuck | 2/8/2007, 9:45 pm EST

I love Oasis, I like U2, and Radiohead is my fav band. Anyone who has ever heard Noel speak in an interview knows he’s always bashing SOMETHING and almost always half-joking. He also happens to be half-correct in this case. I don’t mind people getting serious about something they’re passionate about, but at the same time, it does get a BIT over the top and annoying. That said, I don’t think U2 OR Radiohead go over the top, at least in their music. Since they both make great music still (MUCH better than “Creep”), I say everyone do what ya want so long as it leads to great tunes.
Long live all three bands

across the universe | 2/8/2007, 9:56 pm EST

“Play ‘One,’ shut the fuck up about Africa.”

haha

jaco | 2/8/2007, 11:20 pm EST

Noel is just plain annoying…but there is grain of a point to his slag.
Change in Africa won’t come from the outside. Forgiving dept won’t change the average africans life one bit.
There been 50-60 years of NGO, aid, assistance, grants and donations to Africa to the tune of billions and billions of dollars..and what difference has it made?
As an african has said himself, “stop all this aid money, it goes to the politicians and generals anyway. We have to fix this, not Europe or America.”

Owen H. | 2/8/2007, 11:36 pm EST

I advise Noel to not speak, and to keep using that mouth of his to blow John Lennon’s spectral soul pole.

shpuza | 2/9/2007, 12:54 am EST

I have been waiting for someone to say the truth about these rock Mother Terezas. So pathetic, they of all people should know that music helps people more than their “I’m going to save the world” activities.
I love Yorke, Bono “not so much” his burned since a decade or more ago.

shpuza | 2/9/2007, 12:59 am EST

U2 is like a shiny,
sparkling,
beautifully wrapped up gift,
that has nothing in it, nothing.
Just an empty feeling.
The same feeling you get after a mercy fuck.
Tinkling balls.
They have all the ingredients,
but not the Chef.
That is U2.
Nothing to it.
That is to say,
you too.

jones | 2/9/2007, 3:06 am EST

noel the man, bono should stop crying his heart out.

Douche MaGouche | 2/9/2007, 4:57 am EST

If Noel Gallagher is the king of anything, it’s the kingdom of douchedom. The only thing he’s done worth noting is consisently blow everybody away with the depths of his ignorance and make Pete Doherty look noble. Doherty might be in the gutter, but at least he doesn’t try to drag others into his trough. Who, on the other hand, hasn’t been exposed to the fall-out of Noel’s seemingly uncurable verbal diaheria? The only thing impressive about Noel is the size of his mouth…then again, it’s probably the drugs he should be thanking for that too. Noel Gallagher=Prime “The Surreal Life” material.

Randy | 2/9/2007, 8:38 am EST

Look, I’ve been following Oasis very closely for 11 years now. You have to understand that Noel, Bono, and Thom are all good friends. I mean there are pictures of Liam and bono kissing. Noel isn’t into “save the world” rock and roll. Some people are, he’s not. Atleast he means what he says, I think a rock star who says whatever is on his mind, PC or not is something that has been lost. That in and of itself is great IMO. Thom and Bono won’t care, they know how Noel is, so all of you whining and crying losers get over it! I can tell you first hand, getting a reaction out of you people is half the reason Noel even does interviews! Like when he told us they were the best band in the world, half of us believed him, and the other half got so worked up and pissed off, you couldn’t wait to hear the next retarted thing to come out of his or Liam’s mouth. So just know, you guys are a big reason Oasis blew up in the first place…

Brock Landers | 2/9/2007, 11:58 am EST

Okay, I do think Noel Gallagher is funny as hell and I do love Oasis. But when talk shit about my Radiohead (my favorite band of all time) I am going to have issues with it. Maybe Thom Yorke does put out his view and have political views, but Radiohead and Thom’s music are still fantastic and relevant. I mean, as much as I truly love Oasis, when was the last time they made an album that was relvant? Or at least in America. But as far as Bono goes, I agree. i think he should shut the fuck up and he takes it to another level that Thom does not for many resons that will not be listed. And has every spring and summer festival gone mad? Taylor Hicks! I think the end is near for us all!

Beetlebum | 2/9/2007, 12:03 pm EST

noel and bono are friends they were just on the cover of q together. noel is right about what he said though. bono doesn’t have a degree in politics or economics. who he is to lecture people who have doctorates. the same goes for thom he should write some good songs again. especially since his solo album sucked. long live oasis. the last rock n roll band.

dSays | 2/9/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Taylor played the pre and post jam parties for the 18th Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. He jammed with Popper, Raphael, Haynes, Stuart and the New Orleans Social Scene. He jammed with Outformation the night before.

Willie Nelson, ABB, Robert Randolph & FB, Widespread Panic and Snoop Dog have welcomed him on stage. What’s the difference if its MySpace, a distribution deal or a music contest that gets you there. He’s been an Indie Jam Bander for 10 years and is taking it on the road again.

Noel's support of Tony Blair? | 2/9/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Noel was Tony Blair’s biggest fan. Blair owes his entire political career to Noel Gallagher.

J Weems | 2/10/2007, 2:38 pm EST

There seems to be not a single person among you who knows good decent music that you can understand when you hear it. Taylor Hicks makes all other artist sound like crap and he will be here a long time. He is no cookie cutter artist. As was said before by Pauls Abdul I think They broke the mold when he was created. And I am not soccer mom just a listener of good old music. And you will notice I could say what I had to say withour one nasty word or put down another artist.

Wes | 2/12/2007, 10:41 pm EST

Taylor Hicks is very very talented singer/songwriter who has passion and soul ozzing out of him!!!! He is the real deal. He is the heir to ray charles and good soul music. He plays a mean harp and he will make believers out of the live audience who see him do his thing. BTW..OASIS RULE!!!!

Anja from Rotterdam-Holland. | 2/15/2007, 6:27 pm EST

So Mr.Gallagher,
You say to Bono:”Shut the fuck up about Africa”, while YOU don’t even
know the right words by yourself!
(a reminder)
There are many things that I like to say to you BUT I DON’T KNOW HOW!!

At least when Bono opens his mouth something reasenable is coming out of it!!
a u2_fan in heart and soul :-)

CAPUCINE | 2/15/2007, 7:03 pm EST

Noel Gallagher is not only a witty observer of the human condition–he’s a talented songwriter and brother of gorgeous Liam.

PhillyPhil | 2/21/2007, 2:53 am EST

Taylor Hicks has been working his ass off for years to make it to SXSW. All he had to do was win the world’s most popular karaoke to get there. Good for you, Taylor. We’ve yet to see the best out of you, my friend.

chris | 4/2/2007, 10:31 am EST

shut it nick, noel rocks!

Jakflash | 11/24/2007, 4:05 am EST

Oasis still the biggest band in the world whether u like it or not. So noel can say what he wants he god.

Bob | 2/27/2008, 4:58 pm EST

Why do you need to have a degree in politics or economics to notice what’s wrong in the world?

Fair play to Thom & Bono to raising awareness about things which are wrong. If the mass media is preaching their propaganda, somebody has to counter it!

Bingo | 3/7/2008, 12:12 am EST

U2 born 1984, died 1993 R. I. P.,
everything before was a baby crawl, and after a dead man’s walk.
